Two novel benzodioxotetraaza macrocycles [2,9-dioxo-1,4,7,10-tetraazabicyclo[10.4.0]1,11-hexadeca-1(11),13,15-triene (H(2)L1) and 2,10-dioxo-1,4,8,11-tetraazabicyclo[11.4.0]1,12-heptadeca-1(12),14,16-triene (H(2)L2)] were synthesized by a [1 + 1] crablike cyclization. The protonation constants of both ligands were determined by H-1 NMR titration and by potentiometry at 25.0 degrees C in 0.10 M ionic strength in KNO3. The latter method was also used to ascertain the stability constants of their copper(II) complexes. These studies showed that the CuL1 complex has a much lower thermodynamic stability than the CuL2, and the H(2)L2 displays an excellent affinity for copper(II), due to the good fit of copper(II) into its cavity. The copper complexes of the novel ligands were characterized by electronic spectroscopy in solution and by crystal X-ray diffraction. These studies indicated that the copper center in the CuL1 complex adopts a square-pyramidal geometry with the four nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle forming the equatorial plane and a water molecule at axial position, and the copper in the CuL2 complex is square-planar. Several labeling conditions were tested, and only H(2)L2 could be labeled with Cu-67 efficiently (> 98%) in mild conditions (39 degrees C, 15 min) to provide a slightly hydrophilic radioligand (log D = -0.19 +/- 0.03 at pH 7.4). The in vitro stability was studied in the presence of different buffers or with an excess of diethylenetriamine-pentaethanoic acid. Very high stability was shown under these conditions for over 5 days. The incubation of the radiocopper complex in human serum showed 6% protein binding.

The ordering of block copolymers in thin films is reviewed, starting, from the fundamental principles and extending to recent promising developments as templates for nanolithography which may find important applications in the semiconductor industry. Ordering in supported thin films of symmetric and asymmetric AB diblock and ABA triblock copolymers is discussed, along with that of more complex materials such as ABC triblocks and liquid crystalline block copolymers Techniques to prepare thin films, and to characterise ordering within them, are summarized. Several methods to align Hock copolymer nanostructures, important in several applications are outlined A number of potential applications in nanolithography, production of porous materials, templating. and patterning of organic and inorganic materials are then presented. The influence of crystallization on the morphology of a block copolymer film is briefly discussed, as are structures in grafted block copolymer films. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.

The entropically-driven ring-opening polymerization of macrocyclic monomers (> ca. 14 ring atoms per repeat unit) and/or macrocyclic oligomers is a relatively new method of polymer synthesis that exploits the well-known phenomenon of ring-chain equilibria. It attracts interest because of its novel features. For example, these ring-opening polymerizations emit no volatiles and little or no heat. This review considers the principles of entropically-driven ring-opening polymerizations, gives selected examples and discusses potential applications. The latter include micromolding, high throughput syntheses and the synthesis of supramolecular polymers. Copyright (c) 2005 John Wiley T Sons, Ltd.

Mathematical models have been vitally important in the development of technologies in building engineering. A literature review identifies that linear models are the most widely used building simulation models. The advent of intelligent buildings has added new challenges in the application of the existing models as an intelligent building requires learning and self-adjusting capabilities based on environmental and occupants' factors. It is therefore argued that the linearity is an impropriate basis for any model of either complex building systems or occupant behaviours for control or whatever purpose. Chaos and complexity theory reflects nonlinear dynamic properties of the intelligent systems excised by occupants and environment and has been used widely in modelling various engineering, natural and social systems. It is proposed that chaos and complexity theory be applied to study intelligent buildings. This paper gives a brief description of chaos and complexity theory and presents its current positioning, recent developments in building engineering research and future potential applications to intelligent building studies, which provides a bridge between chaos and complexity theory and intelligent building research.

The application of probiotics and prebiotics to the manipulation of the microbial ecology of the human colon has recently seen many scientific advances. The sequencing of probiotic genomes is providing a wealth of new information on the biology of these microorganisms. In addition, we are learning more about the interactions of probiotics with human cells and with pathogenic bacteria. An alternative means of modulating the colonic microbial community is by the use of prebiotic oligosaccharides. Increasing knowledge of the metabolism of prebiotics by probiotics is allowing us to consider specifically targeting such dietary intervention tools at specific populatiori groups and specific disease states. Noncovalent interactions play key roles in many natural processes leading to the self-assembly of molecules with the formation of supramolecular structures. One of the most important forces responsible for self-assembly is hydrogen bonding, which also plays an important role in the self-assembly of synthetic polymers in aqueous solutions. Proton-accepting polymers can associate with proton-donating polymers via hydrogen bonding in aqueous solutions and form polymer-polymer or interpolymer complexes. There has been an increased interest among researchers in hydrogen-bonded interpolymer complexes since the first pioneering papers were published in the early 1960s. Several hundred research papers have been published on various aspects of complex formation reactions in solutions and interfaces, properties of interpolymer complexes and their potential applications. This book focuses on the latest developments in the area of interpolymer complexation via hydrogen bonding. It represents a collection of original and review articles written by recognized experts from Germany, Greece, Kazakhstan, Poland, Romania, Russia, UK, Ukraine, and the USA. It highlights many important applications of interpolymer complexes, including the stabilization of colloidal systems, pharmaceuticals, and nanomaterials.

Datasets containing information to locate and identify water bodies have been generated from data locating static-water-bodies with resolution of about 300 m (1/360 deg) recently released by the Land Cover Climate Change Initiative (LC CCI) of the European Space Agency. The LC CCI water-bodies dataset has been obtained from multi-temporal metrics based on time series of the backscattered intensity recorded by ASAR on Envisat between 2005 and 2010. The new derived datasets provide coherently: distance to land, distance to water, water-body identifiers and lake-centre locations. The water-body identifier dataset locates the water bodies assigning the identifiers of the Global Lakes and Wetlands Database (GLWD), and lake centres are defined for in-land waters for which GLWD IDs were determined. The new datasets therefore link recent lake/reservoir/wetlands extent to the GLWD, together with a set of coordinates which locates unambiguously the water bodies in the database. Information on distance-to-land for each water cell and the distance-to-water for each land cell has many potential applications in remote sensing, where the applicability of geophysical retrieval algorithms may be affected by the presence of water or land within a satellite field of view (image pixel). During the generation and validation of the datasets some limitations of the GLWD database and of the LC CCI water-bodies mask have been found. Some examples of the inaccuracies/limitations are presented and discussed. Temporal change in water-body extent is common. Future versions of the LC CCI dataset are planned to represent temporal variation, and this will permit these derived datasets to be updated.

The performance of a 2D numerical model of flood hydraulics is tested for a major event in Carlisle, UK, in 2005. This event is associated with a unique data set, with GPS surveyed wrack lines and flood extent surveyed 3 weeks after the flood. The Simple Finite Volume (SFV) model is used to solve the 2D Saint-Venant equations over an unstructured mesh of 30000 elements representing channel and floodplain, and allowing detailed hydraulics of flow around bridge piers and other influential features to be represented. The SFV model is also used to corroborate flows recorded for the event at two gauging stations. Calibration of Manning's n is performed with a two stage strategy, with channel values determined by calibration of the gauging station models, and floodplain values determined by optimising the fit between model results and observed water levels and flood extent for the 2005 event. RMS error for the calibrated model compared with surveyed water levels is ~±0.4m, the same order of magnitude as the estimated error in the survey data. The study demonstrates the ability of unstructured mesh hydraulic models to represent important hydraulic processes across a range of scales, with potential applications to flood risk management.

The study of the morphology of tidal networks and their relation to salt marsh vegetation is currently an active area of research, and a number of theories have been developed which require validation using extensive observations. Conventional methods of measuring networks and associated vegetation can be cumbersome and subjective. Recent advances in remote sensing techniques mean that these can now often reduce measurement effort whilst at the same time increasing measurement scale. The status of remote sensing of tidal networks and their relation to vegetation is reviewed. The measurement of network planforms and their associated variables is possible to sufficient resolution using digital aerial photography and airborne scanning laser altimetry (LiDAR), with LiDAR also being able to measure channel depths. A multi-level knowledge-based technique is described to extract networks from LiDAR in a semi-automated fashion. This allows objective and detailed geomorphological information on networks to be obtained over large areas of the inter-tidal zone. It is illustrated using LIDAR data of the River Ems, Germany, the Venice lagoon, and Carnforth Marsh, Morecambe Bay, UK. Examples of geomorphological variables of networks extracted from LiDAR data are given. Associated marsh vegetation can be classified into its component species using airborne hyperspectral and satellite multispectral data. Other potential applications of remote sensing for network studies include determining spatial relationships between networks and vegetation, measuring marsh platform vegetation roughness, in-channel velocities and sediment processes, studying salt pans, and for marsh restoration schemes.

Recent developments in the fields of veterinary epidemiology and economics are critically reviewed and assessed. The impacts of recent technological developments in diagnosis, genetic characterisation, data processing and statistical analysis are evaluated. It is concluded that the acquisition and availability of data remains the principal constraint to the application of available techniques in veterinary epidemiology and economics, especially at population level. As more commercial producers use computerised management systems, the availability of data for analysis within herds is improving. However, consistency of recording and diagnosis remains problematic. Recent trends to the development of national livestock databases intended to provide reassurance to consumers of the safety and traceability of livestock products are potentially valuable sources of data that could lead to much more effective application of veterinary epidemiology and economics. These opportunities will be greatly enhanced if data from different sources, such as movement recording, official animal health programmes, quality assurance schemes, production recording and breed societies can be integrated. However, in order to realise such integrated databases, it will be necessary to provide absolute control of user access to guarantee data security and confidentiality. The potential applications of integrated livestock databases in analysis, modelling, decision-support, and providing management information for veterinary services and livestock producers are discussed. WO3-based materials as sensors for the monitor of environmental gases such as NO2 (NO + NO2) have been rapidly developed for various potential applications (stationary and mobile uses). It has been reported that these materials are highly sensitive to NOx with the sensitivity further enhanced by adding precious group metals (PGM such as Pt, Pd, Au, etc.). However, there has been limited work in revealing the sensing mechanism for these gases over the WO3-based sensors. In particular, the role of promoter is not yet clear though speculations on their catalytic, electronic and structural effects have been made in the past. In parallel to these PGM promoters here we report, for the first time, that Ag promotion can also enhance WO3 sensitivity significantly. In addition, this promotion decreases the optimum sensor temperature of 300 degreesC for Most WO3-based sensors, to below 200 degreesC. Characterizations (XRD, TEM, and impedance measurement) reveal that there is no significant bulk structure change nor particle size alteration in the WO3 phases during the NO exposure. However, it is found that the Ag doping creates a high concentration of oxygen vacancies in form of coordinated crystallographic shear (CS) planes onto the underneath WO3. It is thus proposed that the Ag particle facilitates the oxidative conversion of NO to NO2 followed by a subsequent NO2 adsorption on the defective WO, sites created at the Ag-WO3 interface; hence, accounting for the high molecular sensitivity. Nucleophilic attack of (triphenylphosphonio) cyclopentadienide on the dichlorodiazomethane-tungsten complex trans[ BrW(dppe)(2)(N2CCl2)]PF6 [dppe is 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino) ethane] results in C-C bond formation and affords the title compound, trans-[W(C24H18ClN2P)Br(C26H24P2)(2)]PF6 center dot 0.6CH(2)Cl(2). This complex, bis[1,2- bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane] bromido{chloro[3-(triphenylphosphonio) cyclopentadienylidene] diazomethanediido} tungsten hexafluorophosphate dichloromethane 0.6-solvate, contains the previously unknown ligand chloro[3-(triphenylphosphonio) cyclopentadienylidene] diazomethane. Evidence from bond lengths and torsion angles indicates significant through-ligand delocalization of electron density from tungsten to the nominally cationic phosphorus(V) centre. This structural analysis clearly demonstrates that the tungsten-dinitrogen unit is a powerful pi-electron donor with the ability to transfer electron density from the metal to a distant acceptor centre through an extended conjugated ligand system. As a consequence, complexes of this type could have potential applications as nonlinear optical materials and molecular semiconductors.

Recent work exploring the use of block copolymer vesicles and tubules is reviewed. The stability and toughness of block copolymer vesicles are enhanced compared to those formed by low molar mass amphiphiles. Functionality can also readily be introduced through the polymer chemistry or by incorporating additional components (for example pore-forming membrane proteins). This design flexibility leads to numerous potential applications in encapsulation, in targeted drug delivery, templating of inorganic materials and many others.

The structural and reactive properties of the acetyl-protected "one-legged" manganese porphyrin [SAc]P-Mn(III)Cl on Ag(100) have been studied by NEXAFS, synchrotron XPS and STM Spontaneous surface-mediated deprotection occurs at 300 K accompanied by spreading of the resulting thio-tethered porphyrin across the metal surface Loss of the axial chlorine ligand occurs at 498 K, without any demetalation of the macrocycle, leaving the Mn center in a low co-ordination state At low coverages the macrocycle is markedly tilted toward the silver surface, as is the phenyl group that forms part of the tethering "leg". In the monolayer region a striking transition occurs whereby the molecule rolls over, preserving the tilt angle of the phenyl group, strongly increasing that of the macrocycle, decreasing the apparent height of the molecule and decreasing its footprint, thus enabling closer packing These findings are in marked contrast with those previously reported for the corresponding more rigidly bound four-legged porphyrin [Turner, M., Vaughan, O. P. H., Kyriakou, G., Watson, D. J., Scherer, L. J; Davidson, G J. E, Sanders, J. K. M.; Lambert, R. M J. Am. Chem Soc 2009, 131, 1910] suggesting that the physicochemical :)properties and potential applications of these versatile systems should be strongly dependent on the mode of tethering to the surface.
