The confined crystallization of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in predominantly spherical microdomains formed by several diblock copolymers was studied and compared. Two polybutadiene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers were prepared by sequential anionic polymerization (with approximately 90 and 80 wt % polybutadiene (PB)). These were compared to equivalent samples after catalytic hydrogenation that produced double crystalline polyethylene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers. Both systems are segregated into microdomains as indicated by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments performed in the melt and at lower temperatures. However, the PB-b-PEO systems exhibited a higher degree of order in the melt. A predominantly spherical morphology of PEO in a PB or a PE matrix was observed by both SAXS and transmission electron microscopy, although a possibly mixed morphology (spheres and cylinders) was formed when the PEO composition was close to the cylinder-sphere domain transitional composition as indicated by SAXS. Differential scanning calorimetry experiments showed that a fractionated crystallization process for the PEO occurred in all samples, indicating that the PE cannot nucleate PEO in these diblock copolymers. A novel result was the observation of a subsequent fractionated melting that reflected the crystallization process. Sequential isothermal crystallization experiments allowed us to thermally separate at least three different crystallization and melting peaks for the PEO microdomains. The lowest melting point fraction was the most important in terms of quantity and corresponded to the crystallization of isolated PEO spheres (or cylinders) that were either superficially or homogeneously nucleated. This was confirmed by Avrami index values of approximately 1. The isothermal crystallization results indicate that the PE matrix restricts the crystallization of the covalently bonded PEO to a higher degree compared to PB.

A combination of in situ and ex situ X-ray scattering techniques and transmission electron microscopy has been used to study the crystallization behaviour of polyethylene, following the imposition of melt shear. In the case of a branched material, the imposition of shear flow up to a rate of 30 s(-1) was found to induce no anisotropy. Although shearing the linear material only ever induced a very small degree of anisotropy in the melt, for shear rates > 0.15 s(-1), subsequent crystallization resulted in increasing anisotropy. Blends of the above two polyethylenes were produced, in which the linear material constituted the minority fraction (similar to 10%). Isothermal crystallization at temperatures where extensive crystallization of the branched material does not occur demonstrated that the behaviour of the linear component of the sheared blend mirrored that of the linear polyethylene alone. However, in addition, it was found that when crystallized in the presence of an oriented morphology, the branched polymer also formed anisotropic structures. We have termed the process templating, in which the crystallization behaviour of the bulk of the system (similar to 90% branched material) is completely altered (spherulitic to oriented lamellar) by mapping it onto a pre-existing minority structure (similar to 10% linear polymer). New experiments underpin the interpretation of the basic division in crystallization behaviour of polyethylene in terms of whether or not there is time for the fold surface to order before the next molecular layer is added at the growth front. For typical growth rates, in Regime 11, polyethylene lamellae form with disordered {001} fold surfaces then transform, with lamellar thickening and twisting, towards the more-ordered condition found for slower crystallization in Regime 1, in which lamellae form with and retain {201} fold surfaces. Several linear and linear-low-density polyethylenes have been used to show that, for the same polymer crystallized alone or in a blend, the growth rate at which the change in initial lamellar condition occurs is reasonably constant thereby supporting the concept of a specific time for surfaces to attain the ordered {201}) state. This specific time, in the range from milliseconds to seconds, increases with molecular length, and in linear-low-density polymer, for higher branch contents. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) may be added to forage based diets rich in tannins for ruminant feeding because it binds to tannins and thus prevent the formation of potentially indigestible tannin-protein complexes. The objective of this work was to determine the in vitro biodegradation (mineralization, i.e., complete breakdown of PEG to CO2) rate of PEG. C-14-Polyethylene glycol (C-14-PEG) was added to three different tropical soils (a sandy clay loam soil, SaCL; a sandy clay soil, SaC; and a sandy loam soil, SaL) and was incubated in Bartha flasks. Free PEG and PEG bound to tannins from a tannin rich local shrub were incubated under aerobic conditions for up to 70 days. The biodegradation assay monitored the (CO2)-C-14 evolved after degradation of the labelled PEG in the soils. After incubation, the amount of (CO2)-C-14 evolved from the C-14-PEG application was low. Higher PEG mineralization values were found for the soils with higher organic matter contents (20.1 and 18.6 g organic matter/kg for SaCL and SaC, respectively) than for the SaL soil (11.9 g organic matter/kg) (P < 0.05). The extent of mineralization of PEG after 70 days of incubation in the soil was significantly lower (P < 0.05) when it was added as bound to the browse tannin than in the free form (0.040 and 0.079, respectively). The growth and production of anthocyanin, flavonoid and phenolic compounds were evaluated in Lollo Rosso lettuce 'Revolution' grown continuously under films varying in their ability to transmit LTV radiation (completely transparent to IN, transparent above 320, 350, 370 and 3 80 nm and completely opaque to LTV radiation). Plants were grown from seed under UV transparent and UV blocking films and destructively harvested 3-4 weeks after transplanting. Plants under a complete UV blocking film (UV400) produced up to 2.2 times more total above ground dry weight than plants under the UV transparent film. In contrast, anthocyanin content in plants under the UV blocking film was approximately eight times lower than in plants under a UV transparent film. Furthermore, there was a curvilinear relationship between the anthocyanin content and LTV wavelength cutoff such that above 370 run there was no further reduction in anthocyanin content. Fluorescence measurements indicated that photosynthetic performance index was 15% higher under the presence of UVB and UVA (UV280) than under the presence of UVA (UV320) and 53% higher than in the absence of UV radiation suggesting protection of the photosynthetic apparatus possibly by phenolic compounds. These findings are of particular importance as the potential of UV transmitting films to increase secondary compounds may offer the opportunity to produce plants commercially with increased health benefits compared to those grown under conventional films.

We have performed the first completely ab initio lattice dynamics calculation of the full orthorhombic cell of polyethylene using periodic density functional theory in the local density approximation (LDA) and the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Contrary to current perceptions, we show that LDA accurately describes the structure whereas GGA fails. We emphasize that there is no parametrization of the results. We then rigorously tested our calculation by computing the phonon dispersion curves across the entire Brillouin zone and comparing them to the vibrational spectra, in particular the inelastic neutron scattering (INS) spectra, of polyethylene (both polycrystalline and aligned) and perdeuteriopolyethylene. The F-point frequencies (where the infrared and Raman active modes occur) are in good agreement with the latest low temperature data. The near-perfect reproduction of the INS spectra, gives confidence in the results and allows Lis to deduce a number of physical properties including the elastic moduli, parallel and perpendicular to the chain. We find that the Young's modulus for an infinitely long, perfectly crystalline polyethylene is 360.2 GPa at 0 K. The highest experimental value is 324 GPa, indicating that current high modulus fibers are similar to 90% of their maximum possible strength.

There has been great interest recently in peptide amphiphiles and block copolymers containing biomimetic peptide sequences due to applications in bionanotechnology. We investigate the self-assembly of the peptide-PEG amphiphile FFFF-PEG5000 containing the hydrophobic sequence of four phenylalanine residues conjugated to PEG of molar mass 5000. This serves as a simple model peptide amphiphile. At very low concentration, association of hydrophobic aromatic phenylalanine residues occurs, as revealed by circular dichroism and UV/vis fluorescence experiments. A critical aggregation concentration associated with the formation of hydrophobic domains is determined through pyrene fluorescence assays. At higher concentration, defined beta-sheets develop as revealed by FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Transmission electron microscopy reveals self-assembled straight fibril structures. These are much shorter than those observed for amyloid peptides, the finite length may be set by the end cap energy due to the hydrophobicity of phenylalanine. The combination of these techniques points to different aggregation processes depending on concentration. Hydrophobic association into irregular aggregates occurs at low concentration, well-developed beta-sheets only developing at higher concentration. Drying of FFFF-PEG5000 solutions leads to crystallization of PEG, as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy (POM), FTIR and X-ray diffraction (XRD). PEG crystallization does not disrupt local beta-sheet structure (as indicated by FTIR and XRD). However on longer lengthscales the beta-sheet fibrillar structure is perturbed because spheruilites from PEG crystallization are observed by POM. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The orientational ordering of the nematic phase of a polyethylene glycol (PEG)-peptide block copolymer in aqueous solution is probed by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), with the sample subjected to steady shear in a Couette cell. The PEG-peptide conjugate forms fibrils that behave as semiflexible rodlike chains. The orientational order parameters (P) over bar (2) and (P) over bar (4) are obtained by modeling the data using a series expansion approach to the form factor of uniform cylinders. The method used is independent of assumptions on the form of the singlet orientational distribution function. Good agreement with the anisotropic two-dimensional SANS patterns is obtained. The results show shear alignment starting at very low shear rates, and the orientational order parameters reach a plateau at higher shear rates with a pseudologarithmic dependence on shear rate. The most probable distribution functions correspond to fibrils parallel to the flow direction under shear, but a sample at rest shows a bimodal distribution with some of the rodlike peptide fibrils oriented perpendicular to the flow direction.
