This paper presents the results of the application of a parallel Genetic Algorithm (GA) in order to design a Fuzzy Proportional Integral (FPI) controller for active queue management on Internet routers. The Active Queue Management (AQM) policies are those policies of router queue management that allow the detection of network congestion, the notification of such occurrences to the hosts on the network borders, and the adoption of a suitable control policy. Two different parallel implementations of the genetic algorithm are adopted to determine an optimal configuration of the FPI controller parameters. Finally, the results of several experiments carried out on a forty nodes cluster of workstations are presented.

A new parameter-estimation algorithm, which minimises the cross-validated prediction error for linear-in-the-parameter models, is proposed, based on stacked regression and an evolutionary algorithm. It is initially shown that cross-validation is very important for prediction in linear-in-the-parameter models using a criterion called the mean dispersion error (MDE). Stacked regression, which can be regarded as a sophisticated type of cross-validation, is then introduced based on an evolutionary algorithm, to produce a new parameter-estimation algorithm, which preserves the parsimony of a concise model structure that is determined using the forward orthogonal least-squares (OLS) algorithm. The PRESS prediction errors are used for cross-validation, and the sunspot and Canadian lynx time series are used to demonstrate the new algorithms.

The pipe sizing of water networks via evolutionary algorithms is of great interest because it allows the selection of alternative economical solutions that meet a set of design requirements. However, available evolutionary methods are numerous, and methodologies to compare the performance of these methods beyond obtaining a minimal solution for a given problem are currently lacking. A methodology to compare algorithms based on an efficiency rate (E) is presented here and applied to the pipe-sizing problem of four medium-sized benchmark networks (Hanoi, New York Tunnel, GoYang and R-9 Joao Pessoa). E numerically determines the performance of a given algorithm while also considering the quality of the obtained solution and the required computational effort. From the wide range of available evolutionary algorithms, four algorithms were selected to implement the methodology: a PseudoGenetic Algorithm (PGA), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), a Harmony Search and a modified Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm (SFLA). After more than 500,000 simulations, a statistical analysis was performed based on the specific parameters each algorithm requires to operate, and finally, E was analyzed for each network and algorithm. The efficiency measure indicated that PGA is the most efficient algorithm for problems of greater complexity and that HS is the most efficient algorithm for less complex problems. However, the main contribution of this work is that the proposed efficiency ratio provides a neutral strategy to compare optimization algorithms and may be useful in the future to select the most appropriate algorithm for different types of optimization problems.

In a world where data is captured on a large scale the major challenge for data mining algorithms is to be able to scale up to large datasets. There are two main approaches to inducing classification rules, one is the divide and conquer approach, also known as the top down induction of decision trees; the other approach is called the separate and conquer approach. A considerable amount of work has been done on scaling up the divide and conquer approach. However, very little work has been conducted on scaling up the separate and conquer approach. In this work we describe a parallel framework that allows the parallelisation of a certain family of separate and conquer algorithms, the Prism family. Parallelisation helps the Prism family of algorithms to harvest additional computer resources in a network of computers in order to make the induction of classification rules scale better on large datasets. Our framework also incorporates a pre-pruning facility for parallel Prism algorithms.

Differential Evolution (DE) is a tool for efficient optimisation, and it belongs to the class of evolutionary algorithms, which include Evolution Strategies and Genetic Algorithms. DE algorithms work well when the population covers the entire search space, and they have shown to be effective on a large range of classical optimisation problems. However, an undesirable behaviour was detected when all the members of the population are in a basin of attraction of a local optimum (local minimum or local maximum), because in this situation the population cannot escape from it. This paper proposes a modification of the standard mechanisms in DE algorithm in order to change the exploration vs. exploitation balance to improve its behaviour.

The work reported in this paper is motivated towards handling single node failures for parallel summation algorithms in computer clusters. An agent based approach is proposed in which a task to be executed is decomposed to sub-tasks and mapped onto agents that traverse computing nodes. The agents intercommunicate across computing nodes to share information during the event of a predicted node failure. Two single node failure scenarios are considered. The Message Passing Interface is employed for implementing the proposed approach. Quantitative results obtained from experiments reveal that the agent based approach can handle failures more efficiently than traditional failure handling approaches.

Zinc (Zn) and cadmium (Cd) hyperaccumulation may have evolved twice in the Brassicaceae, in Arabidopsis halleri and in the Noccaea genus. Tandem gene duplication and deregulated expression of the Zn transporter, HMA4, has previously been linked to Zn/Cd hyperaccumulation in A. halleri. Here, we tested the hypothesis that tandem duplication and deregulation of HMA4 expression also occurs in Noccaea. A Noccaea caerulescens genomic library was generated, containing 36,864 fosmid pCC1FOS (TM) clones with insert sizes similar to 20-40 kbp, and screened with a PCR-generated HMA4 genomic probe. Gene copy number within the genome was estimated through DNA fingerprinting and pooled fosmid pyrosequencing. Gene copy numbers within individual clones was determined by PCR analyses with novel locus specific primers. Entire fosmids were then sequenced individually and reads equivalent to 20-fold coverage were assembled to generate complete whole contigs. Four tandem HMA4 repeats were identified in a contiguous sequence of 101,480 bp based on sequence overlap identities. These were flanked by regions syntenous with up and downstream regions of AtHMA4 in Arabidopsis thaliana. Promoter-reporter beta-glucuronidase (GUS) fusion analysis of a NcHMA4 in A. thaliana revealed deregulated expression in roots and shoots, analogous to AhHMA4 promoters, but distinct from AtHMA4 expression which localised to the root vascular tissue. This remarkable consistency in tandem duplication and deregulated expression of metal transport genes between N. caerulescens and A. halleri, which last shared a common ancestor > 40 mya, provides intriguing evidence that parallel evolutionary pathways may underlie Zn/Cd hyperaccumulation in Brassicaceae.

The current study discusses new opportunities for secure ground to satellite communications using shaped femtosecond pulses that induce spatial hole burning in the atmosphere for efficient communications with data encoded within super-continua generated by femtosecond pulses. Refractive index variation across the different layers in the atmosphere may be modelled using assumptions that the upper strata of the atmosphere and troposphere behaving as layered composite amorphous dielectric networks composed of resistors and capacitors with different time constants across each layer. Input-output expressions of the dynamics of the networks in the frequency domain provide the transmission characteristics of the propagation medium. Femtosecond pulse shaping may be used to optimize the pulse phase-front and spectral composition across the different layers in the atmosphere. A generic procedure based on evolutionary algorithms to perform the pulse shaping is proposed. In contrast to alternative procedures that would require ab initio modelling and calculations of the propagation constant for the pulse through the atmosphere, the proposed approach is adaptive, compensating for refractive index variations along the column of air between the transmitter and receiver.

A parallel hardware random number generator for use with a VLSI genetic algorithm processing device is proposed. The design uses an systolic array of mixed congruential random number generators. The generators are constantly reseeded with the outputs of the proceeding generators to avoid significant biasing of the randomness of the array which would result in longer times for the algorithm to converge to a solution. 1 Introduction In recent years there has been a growing interest in developing hardware genetic algorithm devices [1, 2, 3]. A genetic algorithm (GA) is a stochastic search and optimization technique which attempts to capture the power of natural selection by evolving a population of candidate solutions by a process of selection and reproduction [4]. In keeping with the evolutionary analogy, the solutions are called chromosomes with each chromosome containing a number of genes. Chromosomes are commonly simple binary strings, the bits being the genes.

In this paper we consider hybrid (fast stochastic approximation and deterministic refinement) algorithms for Matrix Inversion (MI) and Solving Systems of Linear Equations (SLAE). Monte Carlo methods are used for the stochastic approximation, since it is known that they are very efficient in finding a quick rough approximation of the element or a row of the inverse matrix or finding a component of the solution vector. We show how the stochastic approximation of the MI can be combined with a deterministic refinement procedure to obtain MI with the required precision and further solve the SLAE using MI. We employ a splitting A = D – C of a given non-singular matrix A, where D is a diagonal dominant matrix and matrix C is a diagonal matrix. In our algorithm for solving SLAE and MI different choices of D can be considered in order to control the norm of matrix T = D –1C, of the resulting SLAE and to minimize the number of the Markov Chains required to reach given precision. Further we run the algorithms on a mini-Grid and investigate their efficiency depending on the granularity. Corresponding experimental results are presented.

In any data mining applications, automated text and text and image retrieval of information is needed. This becomes essential with the growth of the Internet and digital libraries. Our approach is based on the latent semantic indexing (LSI) and the corresponding term-by-document matrix suggested by Berry and his co-authors. Instead of using deterministic methods to find the required number of first "k" singular triplets, we propose a stochastic approach. First, we use Monte Carlo method to sample and to build much smaller size term-by-document matrix (e.g. we build k x k matrix) from where we then find the first "k" triplets using standard deterministic methods. Second, we investigate how we can reduce the problem to finding the "k"-largest eigenvalues using parallel Monte Carlo methods. We apply these methods to the initial matrix and also to the reduced one. The algorithms are running on a cluster of workstations under MPI and results of the experiments arising in textual retrieval of Web documents as well as comparison of the stochastic methods proposed are presented. A connection between a fuzzy neural network model with the mixture of experts network (MEN) modelling approach is established. Based on this linkage, two new neuro-fuzzy MEN construction algorithms are proposed to overcome the curse of dimensionality that is inherent in the majority of associative memory networks and/or other rule based systems. The first construction algorithm employs a function selection manager module in an MEN system. The second construction algorithm is based on a new parallel learning algorithm in which each model rule is trained independently, for which the parameter convergence property of the new learning method is established. As with the first approach, an expert selection criterion is utilised in this algorithm. These two construction methods are equivalent in their effectiveness in overcoming the curse of dimensionality by reducing the dimensionality of the regression vector, but the latter has the additional computational advantage of parallel processing. The proposed algorithms are analysed for effectiveness followed by numerical examples to illustrate their efficacy for some difficult data based modelling problems.

This paper presents a parallel genetic algorithm to the Steiner Problem in Networks. Several previous papers have proposed the adoption of GAs and others metaheuristics to solve the SPN demonstrating the validity of their approaches. This work differs from them for two main reasons: the dimension and the characteristics of the networks adopted in the experiments and the aim from which it has been originated. The reason that aimed this work was namely to build a comparison term for validating deterministic and computationally inexpensive algorithms which can be used in practical engineering applications, such as the multicast transmission in the Internet. On the other hand, the large dimensions of our sample networks require the adoption of a parallel implementation of the Steiner GA, which is able to deal with such large problem instances.

We have designed a highly parallel design for a simple genetic algorithm using a pipeline of systolic arrays. The systolic design provides high throughput and unidirectional pipelining by exploiting the implicit parallelism in the genetic operators. The design is significant because, unlike other hardware genetic algorithms, it is independent of both the fitness function and the particular chromosome length used in a problem. We have designed and simulated a version of the mutation array using Xilinix FPGA tools to investigate the feasibility of hardware implementation. A simple 5-chromosome mutation array occupies 195 CLBs and is capable of performing more than one million mutations per second. I. Introduction Genetic algorithms (GAs) are established search and optimization techniques which have been applied to a range of engineering and applied problems with considerable success [1]. They operate by maintaining a population of trial solutions encoded, using a suitable encoding scheme.
