This paper proposes a new signaling scheme: orthogonal on-off BPSK (O3BPSK), for near-far resistant detection in the asynchronous DS/CDMA systems (up-link). The temporally adjacent bits from different users in the received signals are decoupled by using the on-off signaling, and the original data rate is maintained with no increase in transmission rate by adopting an orthogonal structure. The detector at the receiver is a one-shot linear decorrelating detector, which depends upon neither hard-decision nor specific channel coding. Some computer simulations are shown to confirm the theoretical analysis.

A one-dimensional water column model using the Mellor and Yamada level 2.5 parameterization of vertical turbulent fluxes is presented. The model equations are discretized with a mixed finite element scheme. Details of the finite element discrete equations are given and adaptive mesh refinement strategies are presented. The refinement criterion is an "a posteriori" error estimator based on stratification, shear and distance to surface. The model performances are assessed by studying the stress driven penetration of a turbulent layer into a stratified fluid. This example illustrates the ability of the presented model to follow some internal structures of the flow and paves the way for truly generalized vertical coordinates. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. The white paper ‘Pharmacy in England’ advocates establishing a new pharmacy regulator, building leadership and integrating undergraduate education.[1] Students must morph into competent pharmacists with the skills, expertise and confidence to lead the profession to 2020 and beyond.[2] One way individuals are encouraged to ‘professionalise’ is through participation in personal/professional development schemes. The British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association (BPSA) and the College of Pharmacy Practice have operated a professional development certificate (PDC) scheme since 2001. The scheme rewards students with a joint certificate for evidence of participation in five accredited activities in one academic year. Although the scheme is relevant to development of students, less than 2% of BPSA members take part annually. We wanted to understand the reasons for the low uptake. Our primary objectives were to examine the portrayal of the scheme and to investigate what it signifies to individuals. We describe our attempts to apply social marketing techniques[3] to the PDC, and we use ‘logical levels of change’[4] to highlight a paradox with personal identity.

In this paper, we apply one-list capture-recapture models to estimate the number of scrapie-affected holdings in Great Britain. We applied this technique to the Compulsory Scrapie Flocks Scheme dataset where cases from all the surveillance sources monitoring the presence of scrapie in Great Britain, the abattoir survey, the fallen stock survey and the statutory reporting of clinical cases, are gathered. Consequently, the estimates of prevalence obtained from this scheme should be comprehensive and cover all the different presentations of the disease captured individually by the surveillance sources. Two estimators were applied under the one-list approach: the Zelterman estimator and Chao's lower bound estimator. Our results could only inform with confidence the scrapie-affected holding population with clinical disease; this moved around the figure of 350 holdings in Great Britain for the period under study, April 2005-April 2006. Our models allowed the stratification by surveillance source and the input of covariate information, holding size and country of origin. None of the covariates appear to inform the model significantly. Crown Copyright (C) 2008 Published by Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

An efficient algorithm is presented for the solution of the steady Euler equations of gas dynamics. The scheme is based on solving linearised Riemann problems approximately and in more than one dimension incorporates operator splitting. The scheme is applied to a standard test problem of flow down a channel containing a circular arc bump for three different mesh sizes.

A finite difference scheme based on flux difference splitting is presented for the solution of the two-dimensional shallow water equations of ideal fluid flow. A linearised problem, analogous to that of Riemann for gas dynamics is defined, and a scheme, based on numerical characteristic decomposition is presented for obtaining approximate solutions to the linearised problem, and incorporates the technique of operator splitting. An average of the flow variables across the interface between cells is required, and this average is chosen to be the arithmetic mean for computational efficiency leading to arithmetic averaging. This is in contrast to usual ‘square root’ averages found in this type of Riemann solver, where the computational expense can be prohibitive. The method of upwind differencing is used for the resulting scalar problems, together with a flux limiter for obtaining a second order scheme which avoids nonphysical, spurious oscillations. An extension to the two-dimensional equations with source terms is included. The scheme is applied to the one-dimensional problems of a breaking dam and reflection of a bore, and in each case the approximate solution is compared to the exact solution of ideal fluid flow. The scheme is also applied to a problem of stationary bore generation in a channel of variable cross-section. Finally, the scheme is applied to two other dam-break problems, this time in two dimensions with one having cylindrical symmetry. Each approximate solution compares well with those given by other authors.

Abstract A finite difference scheme is presented for the solution of the two-dimensional shallow water equations in steady, supercritical flow. The scheme incorporates numerical characteristic decomposition, is shock capturing by design and incorporates space-marching as a result of the assumption that the flow is wholly supercritical in at least one space dimension. Results are shown for problems involving oblique hydraulic jumps and reflection from a wall.

An algorithm based on flux difference splitting is presented for the solution of two-dimensional, open channel flows. A transformation maps a non-rectangular, physical domain into a rectangular one. The governing equations are then the shallow water equations, including terms of slope and friction, in a generalized coordinate system. A regular mesh on a rectangular computational domain can then be employed. The resulting scheme has good jump capturing properties and the advantage of using boundary/body-fitted meshes. The scheme is applied to a problem of flow in a river whose geometry induces a region of supercritical flow.

This paper proposes a convenient signaling scheme-orthogonal on-off BPSK (O3BPSK)-for near-far (NF) resistant detection in asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA) systems (uplink). The temporally adjacent bits from different users in the received signals are decoupled by using the on-off signaling, and the original data rate is maintained with no increase in transmission rate by adopting an orthogonal structure. The detector at the receiver is a one-shot linear decorrelating detector, which depends upon neither hard decision nor specific channel coding. The application of O3 strategy to the differentially encoded BPSK (D-BPSK) sequences is also presented. Finally, some computer simulations are shown to confirm the theoretical analysis.

This paper applies O3BPSK (orthogonal on-off PSK) signaling scheme to multipath fading CDMA channels, for the purpose of near-far resistant detection in the reverse link. Based on the maximum multipath spreading delay, a minimum duration of “off” is suggested, with which the temporally adjacent bits (TABs) from different users at the receiver are decoupled. As a result, a Rake-type one-shot linear decorrelating detector (LDD) is obtained. Since no knowledge of echo amplitudes is needed, a blind detection can be realised.

A deterministic prototype video deghoster is presented which is capable of calculating all the multipath channel distortion characteristics in one single pass and subsequently removing the multipath distortions, commonly termed ghosts. Within the system, a channel identification algorithm finds in isolation all the ghost components while a dedicated DSP filter subsystem is capable of removing ghosts in real time. The results from the system are presented.

The assimilation of observations with a forecast is often heavily influenced by the description of the error covariances associated with the forecast. When a temperature inversion is present at the top of the boundary layer (BL), a significant part of the forecast error may be described as a vertical positional error (as opposed to amplitude error normally dealt with in data assimilation). In these cases, failing to account for positional error explicitly is shown t o r esult in an analysis for which the inversion structure is erroneously weakened and degraded. In this article, a new assimilation scheme is proposed to explicitly include the positional error associated with an inversion. This is done through the introduction of an extra control variable to allow position errors in the a priori to be treated simultaneously with the usual amplitude errors. This new scheme, referred to as the ‘floating BL scheme’, is applied to the one-dimensional (vertical) variational assimilation of temperature. The floating BL scheme is tested with a series of idealised experiments a nd with real data from radiosondes. For each idealised experiment, the floating BL scheme gives an analysis which has the inversion structure and position in agreement with the truth, and outperforms the a ssimilation which accounts only for forecast a mplitude error. When the floating BL scheme is used to assimilate a l arge sample of radiosonde data, its ability to give an analysis with an inversion height in better agreement with that observed is confirmed. However, it is found that the use of Gaussian statistics is an inappropriate description o f t he error statistics o f t he extra c ontrol variable. This problem is alleviated by incorporating a non-Gaussian description of the new control variable in the new scheme. Anticipated challenges in implementing the scheme operationally are discussed towards the end of the article.
