A new layered ammonium manganese(II) diphosphate, (NH4)(2)[Mn-3(P2O7)(2)(H2O)(2)], has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions at 433 K in ethylene glycol and the structure determined at 293 K using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (M-r = 584.82, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/a, a = 9.4610( 8), b = 8.3565( 7), c = 9.477(1) Angstrom, beta = 99.908(9) degrees, V = 738.07 Angstrom(3), Z = 2, R = 0.0351 and R-w = 0.0411 for 1262 observed data (I > 3(sigma(I))). The structure consists of chains of cis- and trans-edge sharing MnO6 octahedra linked via P2O7 units to form layers of formula [Mn3P4O14(H2O)(2)](2-) in the ab plane. Ammonium ions lie between the manganese-diphosphate layers. A network of interlayer and ammonium-layer based hydrogen bonding holds the structure together. Magnetic measurements indicate Curie - Weiss behaviour above 30 K with mu(eff) = 5.74(1) mu(B) and theta = -23(1) K, consistent with the presence of high-spin Mn2+ ions and antiferromagnetic interactions. However, the magnetic data reveal a spontaneous magnetisation at 5 K, indicating a canting of Mn2+ moments in the antiferromagnetic ground state. On heating (NH4)(2)[Mn-3(P2O7)(2)(H2O)(2)] in water at 433 K under hydrothermal conditions, Mn-5(HPO4)(2)(PO4)(2).4H(2)O, synthetic hureaulite, is formed.

Samples of glacial till deposited since the Little Ice Age (LIA) maximum by two glaciers, North Bogbre at Svartisen and Corneliussen-breen at Okstindan, northern Norway, were obtained from transects running from the current glacier snout to the LIA (c. AD 1750) limit. The samples were analysed to determine their sediment magnetic properties, which display considerable variability. Significant trends in some magnetic parameters are evident with distance from the glacier margin and hence length of subaerial exposure. Magnetic susceptibility (X) decreases away from the contemporary snout, perhaps due to the weathering of ferrimagnetic minerals into antiferromagnetic forms, although this trend is generally not statistically significant. Trends in the ratios of soft IRM/hard IRM which are statistically significant support this hypothesis, suggesting that antiferromagnetic minerals are increasing relative to ferrimagnetic minerals towards the LIA maximum. Backfield ratios (IRM -100 mT/SIRM) also display a significant and strong trend towards magnetically harder behaviour with proximity to the LIA maximum. Thus, by employing a chronosequence approach, it may be possible to use sediment magnetics data as a tool for reconstructing glacier retreat in areas where more traditional techniques, such as lichenometry, are not applicable.

A family of ruthenium (III) complexes of tetradentate monobasic NSNO donor chelators (HL) have been synthesized and isolated in their pure form. On chromatographic separation, trans-dichloro and cis-dichloro ruthenium (111) complexes of pyridylthioazophenolates are eluted using 19:1 and 7:3 (v/v) DCM-MeOH mixtures, respectively. Both cis and trans isomers of the dark brown colored ruthenium (111) complexes, having the general formula of [Ru(L)Cl-2], have been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and other physico-chemical tools. The magnetic moments of both the cis- and trans-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes are in the range of 1.71-1.79 BM. One of the complexes, trans-[Ru(L1)Cl-2] (2a), has been subjected to single-crystal X-ray analysis which confirms that the chlorines are in mutually trans positions in the molecule. The EPR spectra of the cis-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes (1) in DMF are consistent with the fact that the complexes are low-spin octahedral with one unpaired electron having three different g values (g(x) not equal g(y) not equal g(z)) complexes are monomeric with an octahedral coordination sphere. The electrochemical studies of [Ru(L)Cl,] in DMF show a quasi-reversible voltammogram. The reduction potentials for the cis-isomers are comparatively lower than those of the corresponding trans isomers. On reaction with the bidentate bipyridyl ligand in the presence of AgNO3, the cis-[Ru(L)Cl-2] complexes (1) produce a series of complexes with the general formula [Ru(L)(bpy)(2)](PF6)(2) (3). which have also been characterized by elemental analyses, spectroscopic and other physico-chemical tools. The hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO3)(2).6H(2)O, disodium fumarate (fum) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)/1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) in aqueous-methanol medium yield one 3-D and one 2-D metal-organic hybrid material, [Ni(fum)(bpe)] (1) and [Ni(fum)(bpp)(H2O)] (2), respectively. Complex 1 possesses a novel unprecedented structure, the first example of an "unusual mode" of a five-fold distorted interpenetrated network with metal-ligand linkages where the four six-membered windows in each adamantane-type cage are different. The structural characterization of complex 2 evidences a buckled sheet where nickel ions are in a distorted octahedral geometry, with two carboxylic groups, one acting as a bis-chelate, the other as a bis-monodentate ligand. The metal ion completes the coordination sphere through one water molecule and two bpp nitrogens in cis position. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements of complexes 1 and 2 reveal the existence of very weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions and/or the presence of single-ion zero field splitting (D) of isolated Ni-II ions in both the compounds. Experimentally, both the J parameters are close, comparable and very small. Considering zero-field splitting of Ni-II, the calculated D values are in agreement with values reported in the literature for Ni-II ions. Complex 3, [{Co(phen)}(2)(fum)(2)] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is obtained by diffusing methanolic solution of 1,10-phenanthroline on an aqueous layer of disodium fumarate and Co(NO3)(2).6H(2)O. It consists of dimeric Co-II(phen) units, doubly bridged by carboxylate groups in a distorted syn-syn fashion. These fumarate anions act as bis-chelates to form corrugated sheets. The 2D layer has a (4,4) topology, with the nodes represented by the centres of the dimers. The magnetic data were fitted ignoring the very weak coupling through the fumarate pathway and using a dimer model.

Three new carboxylato-bridged polymeric networks of Mn-II having molecular formula [Mn(ox)(dpyo)](n) (1), {[Mn-2(mal)(2)(bpee)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5(bpee)center dot 0.5(CH3OH)}n, (2) and {[Mn-3(btc)(2)(2,2'-bipy)(2)(H2O)(6)]center dot 4H(2)O}(n) (3) [dpyo, 4,4'-bipyridine N,N'dioxide; bpee, trans-1,2 bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene; 2,2'-bipy, 2,2'-bipyridine; ox = oxalate dianion; mal = malonate dianion; btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate trianion] have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and low temperature magnetic measurements. Structure determination of complex I reveals a covalent bonded 2D network containing bischelating oxalate and bridging dpyo; complex 2 is a covalent, bonded 3D polymeric architecture, formed by bridging malonate and bpee ligands, resulting in an open framework with channels filled by uncoordinated disordered bpee and methanol molecules. Whereas complex 3, comprising btc anions bound to three metal centers, is a 1D chain which further extends its dimensionality to 3D via pi-pi and H-bonding interactions. Low temperature magnetic measurements reveal the existence of weak antiferromagnetic interaction in all these complexes. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2006).

Four trinuclear Cu(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](NO3)(2) (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2)center dot H2O (2), [(CuL3)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2) (3) and [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)][(CuI3)-I-1] (4), where HL1 (8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one), HL2 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one] and HL3 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2- one] are the three tridentate Schiff bases, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. All four complexes contain a partial cubane core, [(CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](2+) in which the three [CuL] subunits are interconnected through two types of oxygen bridges afforded by the oxygen atoms of the ligands and the central OH- group. The copper(II) ions are in a distorted square-pyramidal environment. The equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen of the central OH- group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from the Schiff base. The oxygen atom of the Schiff base also coordinates to the axial position of Cu(II) of another subunit to form the cyclic trimer. Magnetic susceptibilities have been determined for these complexes over the temperature range of 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = -J(12)S(1)S(2) - J(13)S(1)S(3) - J(23)S(2)S(3) has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: J = - 54.98 cm(-1) g = 2.24 for 1; J = - 56.66 cm(-1), g = 2.19 for 2; J = -44.39 cm(-1), g = 2.16 for 3; J = - 89.92 cm(-1), g = 2.25 for 4. The EPR data at low temperature indicate that the phenomenon of spin frustration occurs for complexes 1-3. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A series of five Ni(II)-complexes containing the same tridentate Schiff base but different monoanionic ligands (N-3(-), NO3-, PhCOO- and NO2-)reveals that the competitive as well as the cooperative role of the monoanions and phenoxo group in bridging the metal ions play the key role in the variation of molecular architecture.

Three kinds of copper(II) azide complexes have been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2) . 6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (L-1); N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (L-2); and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-diethylethylenediamine (L-3), respectively, in the presence of slight excess of sodium azide. They are the monomeric Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4) (1), the end-to-end diazido-bridged Cu-2(L-2)(2)(mu-1,3-N-3)(2)(ClO4)(2) (2) and the single azido-bridged (mu-1,3-) 1D chain [Cu(L-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)](n)(ClO4)(n) (3). The crystal and molecular structures of these complexes have been solved. The variable temperature magnetic moments of type 2 and type 3 complexes were studied. Temperature dependent susceptibility for 2 was fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression which led to the parameters J = -3.43 cm(-1) and R = 1 X 10(-5). The magnetic data for 3 were fitted to Baker's expression for S = 1/2 and the parameters obtained were J = 1.6 cm(-1) and R = 3.2 x 10(-4). Crystal data are as follows. Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula, C12H13ClN6O4Cu; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 8.788(12), b = 13.045(15), c = 14.213(15) Angstrom; beta = 102.960(10)degrees; Z = 4. Cu(L-2)(mu-N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula. C10H17ClN6O4Cu: crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 10.790(12), b = 8.568(9), c = 16.651(17) Angstrom; beta = 102.360(10)degrees; Z = 4. The 1:1 condensation of N-methyl-1,3-diaminopropane and N,N-diethyl-1,2-diminoethane with 2-acetylpyridine, respectively at high dilution gives the tridentate mono-condensed Schiff bases N-methyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-propane-1,3-diamine (L-1) and N,N-diethyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-ethane-1,2-diamine (L-2). The tridentate ligands were allowed to react with methanol solutions of nickel(II) thiocyanate to prepare the complexes [Ni(L-1)(SCN)(2)(OH2) (1) and [{Ni(L-2)(SCN)}(2)] (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to confirm the structures of the complexes. The nickel(II) in complex 1 is bonded to three nitrogen donor atoms of the ligand L-1 in a mer orientation, together with two thiocyanates bonded through nitrogen and a water molecule, and it is the first Schiff base complex of nickel(II) containing both thiocyanate and coordinated water. The coordinated water initiates a hydrogen bonded 2D network. In complex 2, the nickel ion occupies a slightly distorted octahedral coordination sphere, being bonded to three nitrogen atoms from the ligand L-2, also in a mer orientation, and two thiocyanate anions through nitrogen. In contrast to 1, the sixth coordination site is occupied by a sulfur atom from a thiocyanate anion in an adjacent molecule, thus creating a centrosymmetric dimer. A variable temperature magnetic study of complex 2 indicates the simultaneous presence of zero-field splitting, weak intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling and intermolecular antiferromagnetic interactions between the nickel(II) centers.

Three novel mixed bridged trinuclear and one tetranuclear copper(II) complexes of tridentate NNO donor Schiff base ligands [Cu-3(L-1)(2)(mu(LI)-N-3)(2)(CH3OH)(2)(BF2)(2)] (1), [Cu-3(L-1)(2)(mu(LI)-NO3-I kappa O.2 kappa O')(2)] (2), [Cu-3(L-2)(2)(mu(LI)-N-3)(2)(mu-NOI-I kappa O 2 kappa O')(2)] (3) and [Cu-4(L-3)(2)(mu(LI)-N-3)(4)(mu-CH3COO-I kappa O 2 kappa O')(2)] (4) have been synthesized by reaction of the respective tridentate ligands (L-1 = 2[1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylimino)-ethyl]-phenol, L-2 = 2[1-(2-diethylamino-ethylimino)-ethyl]-phenol, L-3 = 2-[1-(2-dimethylamino-ethylimino)-methyl]-phenol) with the corresponding copper(II) salts in the presence of NaN3 The complexes are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and variable-temperature magnetic measurements Complex 1 is composed of two terminal [Cu(L-1)(mu(LI)-N-3)] units connected by a central [Cu(BF4)(2)] unit through nitrogen atoms of end-on azido ligands and a phenoxo oxygen atom of the tridentate ligand The structures of 2 and 3 are very similar, the only difference is that the central unit is [Cu(NO1)(2)] and the nitrate group forms an additional mu-NO3-I kappa O 2 kappa O' bridge between the terminal and central copper atoms In complex 4, the central unit is a di-mu(L1)-N-3 bridged dicopper entity, [Cu-2(mu(L1)-N-3)(2)(CH3COO)(2)] that connects two terminal [Cu(L-3)(mu(L1)-N-3)] units through end-on azido; phenoxo oxygen and mu-CH3COO-1 kappa O center dot 2 kappa O' triple bridges to result in a tetranuclear unit Analyses of variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data indicates that there is a global weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the copper(II) ions in complexes 1-3, with the exchange parameter J of -9 86, -11 6 and -19 98 cm(-1) for 1-3, respectively In complex 4 theoretical calculations show the presence of an antiferromagnetic coupling in the triple bridging ligands (acetato, phenoxo and azido) while the interaction through the double end-on azido bridging ligand is strongly ferromagnetic.

LaMn and LaCo doped barium hexaferrites of formula Ba(1-x)LaxFe(12-x)MxO19 (M=Mn, Co) (x=0.05 to 0.40) were prepared with an improved co-precipitation/molten salt method. For the synthesis, aqueous solutions of the appropriate metal chlorides were prepared in the ratio required except that the initial mole ratio of Fe and dopants to Ba was chosen to be 11:1, and then mixed with excess Na2CO3. The solutions were then cooled, filtered off, dried, then mixed with KCl flux, and heated at 450 degrees C and for 2 h. The temperature was then raised to 950 degrees C and kept for 4 h, then cooled. This new synthesis method, which employs a lower temperature and shorter reaction time, gives products with improved crystallinity and purity while the saturation magnetization and coercivity values are comparable with those synthesized via the high temperature method.
