The mathematical difficulties which can arise in the force constant refinement procedure for calculating force constants and normal co-ordinates are described and discussed. The method has been applied to the methyl fluoride molecule, using an electronic computer. The best values of the twelve force constants in the most general harmonic potential field were obtained to fit twenty-two independently observed experimental data, these being the six vibration frequencies, three Coriolis zeta constants and two centrifugal stretching constants DJ and DJK, for both CH3F and CD3F. The calculations have been repeated both with and without anharmonicity corrections to the vibration frequencies. All the experimental data were weighted according to the reliability of the observations, and the corresponding standard errors and correlation coefficients of the force constants have been deduced. The final force constants are discussed briefly, and compared with previous treatments, particularly with a recent Urey-Bradley treatment for this molecule.

Infra-red spectra have been recorded for silyl fluoride and silyl fluoride-d3 at a resolution of circa 0·3 cm-1. Rotational structure has been observed for parallel fundamentals in both molecules, and for all perpendicular fundamentals. In both SiH3F and SiD3F the A1 and E species deformation modes interact strongly via a Coriolis perturbation; this has been analysed, and the band origin of v5 for SiH3F is reassigned. A hybrid-orbital force field based on the experimental data is also reported.

The complete general harmonic force field of methyl flouride was recalculated using the most recent literature frequency, Coriolis ζ, and centrifugal distortion data for 12CH3F, 13CH3F, 12CD3F, 12CHD2F and 12CH2DF. The anharmonic corrections applied to the observed frequency data and the adopted molecular geometry are considered to be more realistic than those used hitherto. There is excellent overall agreement between the fitted force constants and the highest quality ab initio force field currently available.

Polycrystalline LiH was studied in situ using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy to investigate the effect water vapour has on the rate of production of the corrosion products, particularly LiOH. The reaction rate of the formation of surface LiOH was monitored by measurement of the hydroxyl (OH) band at 3676 cm(-1). The initial hydrolysis rate of LiH exposed to water vapour at 50% relative humidity was found to be almost two times faster than LiH exposed to water vapour at 2% relative humidity. The hydrolysis rate was shown to be initially very rapid followed by a much slower, almost linear rate. The change in hydrolysis rate was attributed to the formation of a coherent layer of LiOH on the LiH surface. Exposure to lower levels of water vapour appeared to result in the formation of a more coherent corrosion product, resulting in effective passivation of the surface to further attack from water. Coatings and filters for spaceflight far-infrared components require a robust, non-absorptive low-index thin film material to contrast with the typically higher refractive index infrared materials. Barium fluoride is one such material for the 10 to 20µm wavelength infrared region, however its optical and mechanical properties vary depending on the process used to deposit it in thin film form. Thin films of dielectric produced by thermal evaporation are well documented as having a lower packing density and refractive index than bulk material. The porous and columnar micro structure of these films causes possible deterioration of their performance in varied environmental conditions, primarily because of the moisture absorption. Dielectric thin films produced by the more novel technique of ion-beam sputtering are denser with no columnar micro structure and have a packing density and refractive index similar to the bulk material. A comparative study of Barium Fluoride (BaF2) thin films made by conventional thermal evaporation and ion-beam sputtering is reported. Films of similar thicknesses are deposited on Cadmium Telluride and Germanium substrates. The optical and mechanical properties of these films are then examined. The refractive index n of the films is obtained from applying the modified Manifacier's evvelope method to the spectral measurements made on a Perkin Elmer 580 spectrophotometer. An estimate is also made of the value of the extinction coefficient k in the infrared wavelength transparent region of the thin film. In order to study the mechanical properties of the BaF2 films, and evaluate their usefulness in spaceflight infrared filters and coatings, the thin film samples are subjected to MIL-F-48616 environmental tests. Comparisons are made of their performance under these tests.

The adsorption and co-adsorption of lithium and oxygen at the surface of rutile-like manganese dioxide(b-MnO2), which are important in the context of Li–air batteries, are investigated using density functional theory. In the absence of lithium, the most stable surface of b-MnO2, the (110), adsorbs oxygen in the form of peroxo groups bridging between two manganese cations. Conversely, in the absence of excess oxygen, lithium atoms adsorb on the (110) surface at two different sites, which are both tricoordinated to surface oxygen anions, and the adsorption always involves the transfer of one electron from the adatom to one of the five-coordinated manganese cations at the surface, creating (formally) Li+ and Mn3+ species. The co-adsorption of lithium and oxygen leads to the formation of a surface oxide, involving the dissociation of the O2 molecule, where the O adatoms saturate the coordination of surface Mn cations and also bind to the Li adatoms. This process is energetically more favourable than the formation of gas-phase lithium peroxide (Li2O2) monomers, but less favourable than the formation of Li2O2 bulk. These results suggest that the presence of b-MnO2 in the cathode of a nonaqueous Li–O2 battery lowers the energy for the initial reduction of oxygen during cell discharge.

The effects of varying the alkali metal cation in the high-temperature nucleophilic synthesis of a semi-crystalline, aromatic poly(ether ketone) have been systematically investigated, and striking variations in the sequence-distributions and thermal characteristics of the resulting polymers were found. Polycondensation of 4,4'-dihydroxybenzophenone with 1,3-bis(4-fluorobenzoyl)benzene in diphenylsulfone as solvent, in the presence of an alkali metal carbonate M2CO3 (M= Li, Na, K, or Rb) as base, affords a range of different polymers that vary in the distribution pattern of 2-ring and 3-ring monomer units along the chain. Lithium carbonate gives an essentially alternating and highly crystalline polymer, but the degree of sequence-randomisation increases progressively as the alkali metal series is descended, with rubidium carbonate giving a fully random and non-thermally-crystallisable polymer. Randomisation during polycondensation is shown to result from reversible cleavage of the ether linkages in the polymer by fluoride ions, and an isolated sample of alternating-sequence polymer is thus converted to a fully randomised material on heating with rubidium fluoride.

The reaction of geraniol with different lithium carbenoids generated from n-BuLi and the corresponding dihaloalkane has been evaluated. The reaction occurs in a chemo and stereoselective manner, which is consistent with a directing effect from the oxygen of the allylic moiety. Furthermore, a set of polyenes containing allylic hydroxyl or ether groups were chemoselectively and stereoselectively converted into the corresponding gemdimethylcyclopropanes in one single step in moderate to good yields mediated by a lithium carbenoid generated in situ by reaction of n-BuLi and 2,2-dibromopropane.
