An improved amplifier for atmospheric fine wire resistance thermometry is described. The amplifier uses a low excitation current (50 mu A). This is shown to ensure negligible self-heating of the low mass fine wire resistance sensor, compared with measured nocturnal surface air temperature fluctuations. The system provides sufficient amplification for a +/- 50 degrees C span using a +/- 5 V dynamic range analog-to-digital converter, with a noise level of less than 0.01 degrees C. A Kelvin four-wire connection cancels the effect of long lead resistances: a 50 m length of screened cable connecting the Reading design of fine wire thermometer to the amplifier produced no measurable temperature change at 12 bit resolution.

Previously the authors have presented both theoretical and experimental work discussing the operating mechanism of a wire rope held in a tapered socket by means of a cast resin cone. The work reported here extends the investigation to address the question of whether the same socket fabricated with white metal operates in the same manner. To date, previous investigations have compared the operational efficiency of resin and white metal in terms of both strength and/or fatigue endurance. Some other work has analysed the operation of resin sockets or specific cast metal terminations. This paper seeks to draw the results from this work together, and, in addition to a theoretical analysis, presents experimental data obtained from a direct comparison of the operation mechanism for the same sockets filled with resin or white metal. Results show that white metal terminations have a very different distribution of stresses along the length of the socket basket from resin terminations, and a smaller but still significant amount of socket draw. For both types of termination the socket draw develops high frictional gripping forces which can transfer the load from the rope to the socket. The different stress distributions mean that the consequences of termination fabrication defects may not be the same for resin and white metal terminations.

Oil rig mooring lines have traditionally consisted of chain and wire rope. As production has moved into deeper water it has proved advantageous to incorporate sections of fibre rope into the mooring lines. However, this has highlighted torsional interaction problems that can occur when ropes of different types are joined together. This paper describes a method by which the torsional properties of ropes can be modelled and can then be used to calculate the rotation and torque for two ropes connected in series. The method uses numerical representations of the torsional characteristics of both the ropes, and equates the torque generated in each rope under load to determine the rotation at the connection point. Data from rope torsional characterization tests have been analysed to derive constants used in the numerical model. Constants are presented for: a six-strand wire rope; a torque-balanced fibre rope; and a fibre rope that has been designed to be torque-matched to stranded wire rope. The calculation method has been verified by comparing predicted rotations with measured test values. Worked examples are given for a six-strand wire rope connected, firstly, to a torque-balanced fibre rope that offers little rotational restraint, and, secondly, to a fibre rope whose torsional properties are matched to that of the wire rope.

A new wire mechanism called Redundant Drive Wire Mechanism (RDWM) is proposed. The purpose of this paper is to build up the theory of a RDWM with fast motion and fine motion. First, the basic concepts of the proposed mechanism is presented. Second, the vector closure condition for the proposed mechanism is developed. Next, we present the basic equations, propose the basic structure of RDWM with the Internal DOF module, Double Actuation Modules and Precision Modules together with the properties of the mechanism. Finally, we conduct the simulation to show the validity of the RDWM.

In this paper, we propose a new velocity constraint type for Redundant Drive Wire Mechanisms. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the proposed velocity constraint module can fix the orientation of the movable part and to use the kinematical analysis method to obtain the moving direction of the movable part. First, we discuss the necessity of using this velocity constraint type and the possible applications of the proposed mechanism. Second, we derive the basic equations of a wire mechanism with this constraint type. Next, we present a method of motion analysis on active and passive constraint spaces, which is used to find the moving direction of a movable part. Finally, we apply the above analysis method on a wire mechanism with a velocity constraint module and on a wire mechanism with four double actuator modules. By evaluating the results, we prove the validity of the proposed constraint type.

This comparative inquiry examines the multi-/bilingual nature and cultural diversity of two distinctly different linguistic and ethnic communities in Montreal – English speakers and Chinese speakers – with a focus on the multi/bilingual and multi/biliterate development of children from these two communities who attend French-language schools, by choice in one case and by law in the other. In both of these communities, children traditionally achieve academic success. The authors approach this investigation from the perspective of the parents’ aspirations and expectations for, and their support of and involvement in, their children’s education. These two communities share key similarities and differences that, when considered together, help to clarify a number of issues involving multi/biliteracy development, socio-economic and linguistic capital, minority/majority language status, mother-tongue support, home–school continuities, and linguistic identity.

A new method of measuring the total conductivity of atmospheric air is described. It depends on determination of the electrical relaxation time of a horizontal wire, mounted between two insulators, which is initially grounded and then allowed to charge freely. The total air conductivity derived is compared with that from an ion mobility spectrometer. Results from the two techniques agreed to within 1.2 fS m(-1). (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Thermometer screen properties are poorly characterised at low wind speeds. Temperatures from a large thermometer screen have been compared with those from an automatically shaded open-air fine-wire resistance thermometer. For the majority of 5-minute average measurements obtained between July 2008 and 2009, the screen and fine-wire temperatures agreed closely, with a median difference <0.05◦C. At low wind speeds however, larger temperature differences occurred. When calm (wind speed at 2 metres, u2, ≤ 0.1 m s−1), the difference between screen and open-air temperatures varied from −0.25◦C to +0.87◦C. At night with u2 < 0.5 m s−1, this difference was −0.14◦C to 0.39◦C, and, rarely, up to −0.68◦C to 1.38◦C. At the minimum in the daily temperature cycle, the semi-urban site at Reading had u2 < 1 m s−1 for 52% of the observations 1997–2008, u2 < 0.5 m s−1 for 34% and calm conditions for 20%. Consequently uncertainties in the minimum temperature measurements may arise from poor ventilation, which can propagate through calculations to daily average temperatures. In comparison with the daily minimum temperature, the 0900 UTC synoptic temperature measurement has a much lower abundance (5%) of calm conditions.

Chain in both its forms - common (or stud-less) and stud-link - has many engineering applications. It is widely used as a component in the moorings of offshore floating systems, where its ruggedness and corrosion resistance make it an attractive choice. Chain exhibits some interesting behaviour in that when straight and subject to an axial load it does not twist or generate any torque, but if twisted or loaded when in a twisted condition it behaves in a highly non-linear manner, with the torque dependent upon the level of twist and axial load. Clearly an understanding of the way in which chains may behave and interact with other mooring components (such as wire rope, which also exhibits coupling between axial load and generated torque) when they are in service is essential. However, the sizes of chain that are in use in offshore moorings (typical bar diameters are 75 mm and greater) are too large to allow easy testing. This paper, which is in two parts, aims to address the issues and considerations relevant to torque in mooring chain. The first part introduces a frictionless theory that predicts the resultant torques and 'lift' in the links as non-dimensionalized functions of the angle of twist. Fortran code is presented in an Appendix, which allows the reader to make use of the analysis. The second part of the paper presents results from experimental work on both stud-less (41 mm) and stud-link (20.5 and 56 mm) chains. Torsional data are presented in both 'constant twist' and 'constant load' forms, as well as considering the lift between the links.

We consider a physical model of ultrafast evolution of an initial electron distribution in a quantum wire. The electron evolution is described by a quantum-kinetic equation accounting for the interaction with phonons. A Monte Carlo approach has been developed for solving the equation. The corresponding Monte Carlo algorithm is NP-hard problem concerning the evolution time. To obtain solutions for long evolution times with small stochastic error we combine both variance reduction techniques and distributed computations. Grid technologies are implemented due to the large computational efforts imposed by the quantum character of the model.

Two quantum-kinetic models of ultrafast electron transport in quantum wires are derived from the generalized electron-phonon Wigner equation. The various assumptions and approximations allowing one to find closed equations for the reduced electron Wigner function are discussed with an emphasis on their physical relevance. The models correspond to the Levinson and Barker-Ferry equations, now generalized to account for a space-dependent evolution. They are applied to study the quantum effects in the dynamics of an initial packet of highly nonequilibrium carriers, locally generated in the wire. The properties of the two model equations are compared and analyzed.

An overview is given of a vision system for locating, recognising and tracking multiple vehicles, using an image sequence taken by a single camera mounted on a moving vehicle. The camera motion is estimated by matching features on the ground plane from one image to the next. Vehicle detection and hypothesis generation are performed using template correlation and a 3D wire frame model of the vehicle is fitted to the image. Once detected and identified, vehicles are tracked using dynamic filtering. A separate batch mode filter obtains the 3D trajectories of nearby vehicles over an extended time. Results are shown for a motorway image sequence.
