This paper describes an application of Social Network Analysis methods for identification of knowledge demands in public organisations. Affiliation networks established in a postgraduate programme were analysed. The course was executed in a distance education mode and its students worked on public agencies. Relations established among course participants were mediated through a virtual learning environment using Moodle. Data available in Moodle may be extracted using knowledge discovery in databases techniques. Potential degrees of closeness existing among different organisations and among researched subjects were assessed. This suggests how organisations could cooperate for knowledge management and also how to identify their common interests. The study points out that closeness among organisations and research topics may be assessed through affiliation networks. This opens up opportunities for applying knowledge management between organisations and creating communities of practice. Concepts of knowledge management and social network analysis provide the theoretical and methodological basis.

Automatic keyword or keyphrase extraction is concerned with assigning keyphrases to documents based on words from within the document. Previous studies have shown that in a significant number of cases author-supplied keywords are not appropriate for the document to which they are attached. This can either be because they represent what the author believes the paper is about not what it actually is, or because they include keyphrases which are more classificatory than explanatory e.g., “University of Poppleton” instead of “Knowledge Discovery in Databases”. Thus, there is a need for a system that can generate appropriate and diverse range of keyphrases that reflect the document. This paper proposes a solution that examines the synonyms of words and phrases in the document to find the underlying themes, and presents these as appropriate keyphrases. The primary method explores taking n-grams of the source document phrases, and examining the synonyms of these, while the secondary considers grouping outputs by their synonyms. The experiments undertaken show the primary method produces good results and that the secondary method produces both good results and potential for future work.

Automatic keyword or keyphrase extraction is concerned with assigning keyphrases to documents based on words from within the document. Previous studies have shown that in a significant number of cases author-supplied keywords are not appropriate for the document to which they are attached. This can either be because they represent what the author believes a paper is about not what it actually is, or because they include keyphrases which are more classificatory than explanatory e.g., “University of Poppleton” instead of “Knowledge Discovery in Databases”. Thus, there is a need for a system that can generate an appropriate and diverse range of keyphrases that reflect the document. This paper proposes two possible solutions that examine the synonyms of words and phrases in the document to find the underlying themes, and presents these as appropriate keyphrases. Using three different freely available thesauri, the work undertaken examines two different methods of producing keywords and compares the outcomes across multiple strands in the timeline. The primary method explores taking n-grams of the source document phrases, and examining the synonyms of these, while the secondary considers grouping outputs by their synonyms. The experiments undertaken show the primary method produces good results and that the secondary method produces both good results and potential for future work. In addition, the different qualities of the thesauri are examined and it is concluded that the more entries in a thesaurus, the better it is likely to perform. The age of the thesaurus or the size of each entry does not correlate to performance.

n the past decade, the analysis of data has faced the challenge of dealing with very large and complex datasets and the real-time generation of data. Technologies to store and access these complex and large datasets are in place. However, robust and scalable analysis technologies are needed to extract meaningful information from these datasets. The research field of Information Visualization and Visual Data Analytics addresses this need. Information visualization and data mining are often used complementary to each other. Their common goal is the extraction of meaningful information from complex and possibly large data. However, though data mining focuses on the usage of silicon hardware, visualization techniques also aim to access the powerful image-processing capabilities of the human brain. This article highlights the research on data visualization and visual analytics techniques. Furthermore, we highlight existing visual analytics techniques, systems, and applications including a perspective on the field from the chemical process industry.

Two experiments examined the claim for distinct implicit and explicit learning modes in the artificial grammar-learning task (Reber, 1967, 1989). Subjects initially attempted to memorize strings of letters generated by a finite-state grammar and then classified new grammatical and nongrammatical strings. Experiment 1 showed that subjects' assessment of isolated parts of strings was sufficient to account for their classification performance but that the rules elicited in free report were not sufficient. Experiment 2 showed that performing a concurrent random number generation task under different priorities interfered with free report and classification performance equally. Furthermore, giving different groups of subjects incidental or intentional learning instructions did not affect classification or free report.

We use a detailed study of the knowledge work around visual representations to draw attention to the multidimensional nature of `objects'. Objects are variously described in the literatures as relatively stable or in flux; as abstract or concrete; and as used within or across practices. We clarify these dimensions, drawing on and extending the literature on boundary objects, and connecting it with work on epistemic and technical objects. In particular, we highlight the epistemic role of objects, using our observations of knowledge work on an architectural design project to show how, in this setting, visual representations are characterized by a `lack' or incompleteness that precipitates unfolding. The conceptual design of a building involves a wide range of technical, social and aesthetic forms of knowledge that need to be developed and aligned. We explore how visual representations are used, and how these are meaningful to different stakeholders, eliciting their distinct contributions. As the project evolves and the drawings change, new issues and needs for knowledge work arise. These objects have an `unfolding ontology' and are constantly in flux, rather than fully formed. We discuss the implications for wider understandings of objects in organizations and for how knowledge work is achieved in practice.

Importance of biomarker discovery in men’s cancer diagnosis and prognosis Each year around 10,000 men in the UK die as a result of prostate cancer (PCa) making it the 3rd most common cancer behind lung and breast cancer; worldwide more than 670,000 men are diagnosed every year with the disease [1]. Current methods of diagnosis of PCa mainly rely on the detection of elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in serum and/or physical examination by a doctor for the detection of an abnormal prostate. PSA is a glycoprotein produced almost exclusively by the epithelial cells of the prostate gland [2]. Its role is not fully understood, although it is known that it forms part of the ejaculate and its function is to solubilise the sperm to give them the mobility to swim. Raised PSA levels in serum are thought to be due to both an increased production of PSA from the proliferated prostate cells, and a diminished architecture of affected cells, allowing an easier distribution of PSA into the wider circulatory system.
