Reaction of 1-(2'-pyridylazo)-2 -naphthol (Hpan) with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] (dmso=dimethylsulfoxide), [Ru(trpy)Cl-3] (trpy=2,2',2 ''-terpyridine), [Ru(bpy)Cl-3] (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) and [Ru(PPh3)(3)Cl-2] in refluxing ethanol in the presence of a base (NEt3) affords, respectively, the [Ru(pan)(2)], [Ru(trpy)(pan)](+) (isolated as perchlorate salt), [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] and [Ru(PPh3)(2)(pan)Cl] complexes. Structures of these four complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. in each of these complexes, the pan ligand is coordinated to the metal center as a monoanionic tridentate N,N,O-donor. Reaction of the [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] complex with pyridine (py) and 4-picoline (pic) in the presence of silver ion has yielded the [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)](+) and [Ru(bpy)(pan)(pic)](+) complexes (isolated as perchlorate salts), respectively. All the complexes are diamagnetic (low-spin d(6), S = 0) and show characteristic H-1 NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry on all the complexes shows a Ru(II)-Ru(III) oxidation on the positive side of SCE. Except in the [Ru(pan)(2)] complex, a second oxidative response has been observed in the other five complexes. Reductions of the coordinated ligands have also been observed on the negative side of SCE. The [Ru(trpy)(pan)]ClO4, [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)]ClO4 and [Ru(bpy) (pan)(pic)]ClO4 complexes have been observed to bind to DNA, but they have not been able to cleave super-coiled DNA on UV irradiation. Reaction of 1,3-diaryltriazenes (abbreviated in general as HL-R, where R stands for the para-substituent in the aryl fragment and H stands for the dissociable hydrogen atom, R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl, NO2) with [Rh(PPh3)(2)(CO)Cl] in ethanol in the presence of NEt3 produces a series of tris-diaryltriazenide complexes of rhodium of type [Rh(L-R)(3)], where the triazenes are coordinated to rhodium as monoanionic, bidentate N,N-donors. Structure of the [Rh(L-OCH3)(3)] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes are diamagnetic, and show characteristic H-1 NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. They also fluoresce in the visible region under ambient condition while excited at around 400 nm. Cyclic voltammetry on these complexes shows a Rh(III)-Rh(IV) oxidation (within 0.84-1.67 V vs SCE), followed by an oxidation of the coordinated tri- and azene ligand (except the R = NO2 complex). An irreversible reduction of the coordinated triazene is also observed for all the complexes below -1.03 V vs SCE.

Thallium cation complexation by calix[4]tubes has been investigated by a combination of (TI)-T-205, H-1 NMR and ES MS demonstrating the solution formation of a dithallium complex in which the cations are held in the calix[4]arene cavities. In addition, the structure of the complex has been determined in the solid state revealing the cations to be held exclusively by pi-cation interactions. Furthermore, this crystal structure has been used as the basis for molecular dynamics simulations to confirm that binding of the smaller K+ cation in the calix[4]tube cryptand like array occurs via the axial route featuring a g-cation intermediate.

A 1,1' bis(diphenylphosphino ferrocene) dioxide complex of uranyl nitrate was synthesized and characterized by IR, H-1 and P-31{H-1} NMR spectroscopic and X-ray diffraction methods. The structure of the compound shows that the uranium atom is surrounded by eight oxygen atoms in a hexagonal bi-pyramidal geometry. Two oxygen atoms from 1,1' bis(diphenylphosphino ferrocene) dioxide ligand and four oxygen atoms from the nitrate groups form a planar hexagon. The two uranyl oxygen atoms occupy the axial position. The 1,1' bis(diphenylphosphino ferrocene) dioxide ligand acts as a bidentate chelating ligand with a bite angle of 71.56(8)degrees around the uranium(VI) atom, which is much smaller in value compare to any of the previously reported values (90.1 degrees-154.0 degrees) for this ligand.

A 1,1' bis(diphenyl phosphino ferrocene) dioxide complex of the uranyl dichloride was synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, H-1, P-31{H-1} NMR and X-ray diffraction methods. The structure of the compound shows that the uranium(VI) ion is surrounded by four oxygen and two chlorine atoms in an octahedral geometry. Two oxygen atoms from the bis (diphenyl phosphino ferrocene) dioxide and two chlorine atoms form a square planar arrangement. Two uranyl oxygen atoms occupy the axial positions. The bis(diphenyl phosphino ferrocene) dioxide ligand acts as a bidentate chelating ligand with a bite angle of 82.90(16)degrees around the uranyl group. The two chlorine atoms are mutually cis with a CI-U-Cl angle of 97.75(7)degrees.

We apply a new X-ray scattering approach to the study of melt-spun filaments of tri-block and random terpolymers prepared from lactide, caprolactone and glycolide. Both terpolymers contain random sequences, in both cases the overall fraction of lactide units is similar to 0.7 and C-13 and H-1 NMR shows the lactide sequence length to be similar to 9-10. A novel representation of the X-ray fibre pattern as series of spherical harmonic functions considerably facilitates the comparison of the scattering from the minority crystalline phase with hot drawn fibres prepared from the poly(L-lactide) homopolymer. Although the fibres exhibit rather disordered structures we show that the crystal structure is equivalent to that displayed by poly(L-lactide) for both the block and random terpolymers. There are variations in the development of a two-phase structure which reflect the differences in the chain architectures. There is evidence that the random terpolymer includes non-lactide units in to the crystal interfaces to achieve a well defined two-phase structure. (c) 2005 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Two novel benzodioxotetraaza macrocycles [2,9-dioxo-1,4,7,10-tetraazabicyclo[10.4.0]1,11-hexadeca-1(11),13,15-triene (H(2)L1) and 2,10-dioxo-1,4,8,11-tetraazabicyclo[11.4.0]1,12-heptadeca-1(12),14,16-triene (H(2)L2)] were synthesized by a [1 + 1] crablike cyclization. The protonation constants of both ligands were determined by H-1 NMR titration and by potentiometry at 25.0 degrees C in 0.10 M ionic strength in KNO3. The latter method was also used to ascertain the stability constants of their copper(II) complexes. These studies showed that the CuL1 complex has a much lower thermodynamic stability than the CuL2, and the H(2)L2 displays an excellent affinity for copper(II), due to the good fit of copper(II) into its cavity. The copper complexes of the novel ligands were characterized by electronic spectroscopy in solution and by crystal X-ray diffraction. These studies indicated that the copper center in the CuL1 complex adopts a square-pyramidal geometry with the four nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle forming the equatorial plane and a water molecule at axial position, and the copper in the CuL2 complex is square-planar. Several labeling conditions were tested, and only H(2)L2 could be labeled with Cu-67 efficiently (> 98%) in mild conditions (39 degrees C, 15 min) to provide a slightly hydrophilic radioligand (log D = -0.19 +/- 0.03 at pH 7.4). The in vitro stability was studied in the presence of different buffers or with an excess of diethylenetriamine-pentaethanoic acid. Very high stability was shown under these conditions for over 5 days. The incubation of the radiocopper complex in human serum showed 6% protein binding.

The synthesis of dithiocarbamate ligands based on a pyrrole framework is reported. These ligands self-assemble with zinc(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) to afford neutral, dinuclear metallomacrocycles and trinuclear metallocryptands. The assembled metallo compounds have been characterised by a range of techniques, including H-1 NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Some preliminary anion binding studies have also been conducted, using electronic spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The nickel macrocycles showed some affinity for acetate, whereas the copper cryptand showed affinity for benzoate anions. The copper cryptand also exhibited a significant electrochemical response to a range of anions.

A homologous series of macrocyclic oligoamides has been prepared in high yield by reaction of isophthaloyl chloride with m-phenylenediamine under pseudo-high-dilution conditions. The products were characterized by infrared and H-1 NMR spectroscopies, matrix assisted laser desorption-ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). A series of linear oligomers was prepared for comparison. The macrocycles ranged in size from the cyclic trimer up to at least the cyclic nonamer (90 ring atoms). The same homologous series of macrocyclic oligomers was prepared in high yield by the cyclodepolymerization of poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide) (Nomex). Cyclodepolymerization was best achieved by treating a 1% w/v solution of the polymer in dimethyl sulfoxide containing calcium chloride or lithium chloride with 3-4 mol % of sodium hydride or the sodium salt of benzanilide at 150 degreesC for 70 h. Treatment of a concentrated solution of the macrocyclic oligomers (25% w/v) with 4 mol % of sodium hydride or the sodium salt of benzanilide in a solution of lithium chloride in dimethyl sulfoxide at 170 degreesC for 6 h resulted in efficient entropically driven ring-opening polymerizations to give poly(m-phenylene isophthalamide), characterized by infrared and H-1 NMR spectroscopies and by GPC. The molecular weights obtained were comparable with those of the commercial polymer.

Treatment of [UO2(OTf)(2)] or [UO2I2(thf)(3)] with 1 equiv. of CyMe4BTBP in anhydrous acetonitrile led to the formation of [UO2(CyMe4BTBP)(OTf)(2)] (1) and [UO2(CyMe4BTBP)I-2] (2) which crystallized as the cationic forms [UO2(CyMe4BTBP)(py)][OTf](2) (3) and [UO2I(CyMe4BTBP)][I] (4) in pyridine and acetonitrile, respectively. These compounds are unique examples of structurally characterized actinide complexes with a BTBP molecule; this ligand adopts a planar conformation in the equatorial plane of the {UO2}(2+) ion. In pyridine, 1 is dissociated into [UO2(OTf)(2)(PY)(3)] and free CyMe4BTBP and the thermodynamic parameters (K, Delta H, Delta S) of this equilibrium have been determined by H-1 NMR spectroscopy. The ethoxide derivative [UO2(OEt)(CyMe4BTBP)][OTf] (5) crystallized from a solution of I in a mixture of ethanol and acetone under air, and the dinuclear mu-oxo complex [{UO2(CyMe4BTBP)}(2)(mu-O)][I](2) (6) was obtained from [UO2I(thf)(2.7)] and CyMe4BTBP. The crystal structures of 6 and of the analogous derivatives [{UO2(py)(4)}(2)(mu-O)][I](2)(7) and [{UO2(TPTZ)(py)}(2)(mu-O)][I-3](2)(8) exhibit a flexible [{UO2}-O-{UO2}](2+) moiety.

A range of linear polyurethanes featuring aliphatic, aromatic and ether residues have been prepared by co-polymerisation of novel 'masked' isocyanate A(2)-type monomers and diols. The reactive isocyanate monomers were generated in situ via the triphenylphosphine mediated decomposition of the heterocyclic disulfide, 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-dione. Two different synthetic approaches were examined and assessed for the construction of the novel A(2)-type monomers, which involved either coupling two 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones together through a spacer group or construction of 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones directly from diamines. The resulting polyurethanes were purified via solvent extraction and analysed using GPC, NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses. Molecular weight data were obtained and compared from both GPC and H-1 NMR (via end-group analysis) spectroscopic analysis. The thermal properties of the polyurethanes were determined using DSC and their solubility in common aprotic organic solvents was also assessed and related to their structural composition. A novel, pyrene-functionalised copolymer has been synthesised in a single step via imidisation of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) with 1-pyrenemethylamine, and its potential for the detection of volatile nitro aromatic compounds (NACs) evaluated. The new copolymer forms complexes in solution with NACs such as 2,5-dinitrobenzonitrile, as shown by H-1 NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Moreover, thin films of this copolymer, cast from THF solution, undergo almost instantaneous fluorescence quenching when exposed to the vapour of 2,5-dinitrobenzonitrile (a model for TNT) at ambient temperatures and pressures.

The tetraprotonated form of the dioxatetraazamacrocycle, 6,19-dioxa-3,9,16,22-tetraaza[22.2.2.2(11,14)]-triaconta-1(26),11,13,24, 27,29-hexaene, (H4L1)(4+), was used as the receptor for binding studies with carboxylate anionic substrates of different shapes, sizes, and charges [succinate (suc(2-)), cyclo- hexanetricarboxylate (cta(3-)), phthalate (ph(2-)), isophthalate (iph(2-)), terephthalate (tph(2-)), and benezenetricarboxylate (btc(3-))]. Association constants were determined by potentiometry in aqueous solution at 298.2 K and 0.10 M KCl and by H-1 NMR titration in D2O. The strongest association was found for the btc3- anion at 5-7 pH region. From both techniques it was possible to establish the binding preference trend of the receptor for the different substrates, and the H-1 NMR spectroscopy gave important suggestions about the type of interactions between partners and the location of the substrates in the supramolecular entities formed. The effective binding constants at pH 6 follow the order: btc(3-)>iph(2-)>cta(3-) =ph(2-)>tph(2-)>suc(2-). All the studies suggest that the anionic substrates bind to the receptor via N-H center dot center dot center dot O = C hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions, and the aromatic substrates can also establish pi-pi stacking interactions. The crystal structures of (H4L1)(4+) and its supramolecular assemblies with ph(2-) and tph(2-) were determined by X-ray diffraction. The last two structures showed that the association process in solid state occurs via multiple N-H center dot center dot center dot O = C hydrogen bonds with the anionic substrate located outside the macrocyclic cavity of the receptor. Molecular dynamics simulations carried out for the association of (H4L1)(4+) with tph(2-) and btC(3-) in water solution established at atomic level the existence of all interactions suggested by the experimental studies, which act cooperatively in the binding process. Furthermore, the binding free energies were estimated and the values are in agreement with the experimental ones, indicating that the binding of these two anionic substrates occurs into the receptor cavity. However, the tph(2-) has also propensity to leave the macrocyclic cavity and its molecular recognition can also happen at the top of the receptor. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The linking of orthopalladated ferrocenylene units by parabanato(2-) ligands results in enantiospecific assembly of a hexanuclear complex in which (i) the steric bulk of the ferrocenylene moiety, (ii) the folded configuration dictated by the imidato(2-) bridging ligand, and (iii) the strong preference for a trans arrangement of the carbonyl oxygen and ferrocenyl carbon atoms, combine to ensure that only ferrocenylene-palladium units with the same chirality can be located at adjacent positions in the assembled complex. The resulting tris-parabanato(2-)-bridged, hexapalladium complex is thus homochiral (R,R,R,R,R,R or S,S,S,S,S,S), as demonstrated by H-1 NMR spectroscopy and by X-ray analysis of a racemic crystal which shows the complex to possess a tapering, twisted, trigonal-prismatic skeleton of palladium atoms with threefold crystallographic symmetry. Pyrene-based molecular tweezers show sequence-specific binding to aromatic polyimides through sterically-controlled donor-acceptor pi-stacking and hydrogen bonding; H-1 NMR spectra of tweezer-complexes with polyimides having different sequence-restrictions show conclusively that the detection of long range sequence-information results from multiple tweezer-binding at adjacent imide residues.
