Using the 1: 2 condensate of benzildihydrazone and 2-acetylpyridine as a tetradentate N donor ligand L, LaL(NO3)(3) (1) and EuL(NO3)(3) (2), which are pale yellow in colour, are synthesized. While single crystals of 1 could not be obtained, 2 crystallises as a monodichloromethane solvate, 2 center dot CH2Cl2 in the space group Cc with a = 11.7099(5) angstrom, b = 16.4872(5) angstrom, c = 17.9224(6) angstrom and beta = 104.048(4)degrees. From the X-ray crystal structure, 2 is found to be a rare example of monohelical complex of Eu(III). Complex 1 is diamagnetic. The magnetic moment of 2 at room temperature is 3.32 BM. Comparing the FT-IR spectra of 1 and 2, it is concluded that 1 also is a mononuclear single helix. H-1 NMR reveals that both 1 and 2 are mixtures of two diastereomers. In the case of the La(III) complex (1), the diastereomeric excess is only 10% but in the Eu(III) complex 2 it is 80%. The occurrence of diastereomerism is explained by the chiralities of the helical motif and the type of pentakis chelates present in 1 and 2.

The synthesis and extraction of americium(III) and europium(III) from aqueous nitric acid solutions by the new BTBP ligands 6,6’-bis(5,5,7,7- tetramethyl-5,7-dihydrofuro[3,4-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2’-bipyridine (Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP), and 6,6’-bis(5,5,7,7-tetramethyl-5,7-dihydrothieno[3,4-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)- 2,2’-bipyridine (Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP) is described. The affinity for Am(III) and the selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III) of Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP were generally higher than for Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP. For both ligands, the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) from 3 M HNO3 into 3 mM organic solutions varied with the diluent used. The highest distribution ratios and separation factors observed were in cyclohexanone and 2-methylcyclohexanone, respectively. For Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP, there is a strong correlation between the distribution ratio for Am(III) and the permittivity of the diluent used. With 1-octanol as the diluent, low distribution ratios (D(Am) < 1) were observed for Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP although this ligand extracts Am(III) selectively (SFAm/Eu = 16-46 from 1-4 M HNO3). For Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP, Am(III) is extracted as the disolvate. The distribution ratios for Am(III), and the separation factors for Am(III) over Eu(III) are both significantly higher for CyMe4-BTBP than they are for Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP and Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP in cyclohexanone. Changing the diluent from cyclohexanone to 2-methylcyclohexanone leads to a decrease in D(Am) but an increase in SFAm/Eu for Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP.

The present work reports a convenient route for the immobilisation of a phenanthroline-bis triazine (C1-BTPhen) group on the surface of zirconia-coated maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) magnetic nanoparticles. The magnetic nanoparticles functionalized with C1-BTPhen were able to co-extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from nitric acid (HNO3). The extraction efficiency of these C1-BTPhen-functionalized magnetic nanoparticles for both Am(III) and Eu(III) was 20% at 4M HNO3. The interaction between C1-BTPhen and metal cations is reversible. These functionalized magnetic nanoparticles can be used for the co-extraction of traces of Am(III) and Eu(III).

Human D-2Long (D-2L) and D-2Short (D-2S) dopamine receptor isoforms were modified at their N-terminus by the addition of a human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) or a FLAG epitope tag. The receptors were then expressed in Spodoptera frugiperda 9 (Sf9) cells using the baculovirus system, and their oligomerization was investigated by means of co-immunoprecipitation and time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). [H-3] Spiperone labelled D-2 receptors in membranes prepared from Sf9 cells expressing epitope-tagged D-2L or D-2S receptors, with a pK(d) value of approximate to 10. Co-immunoprecipitation using antibodies specific for the tags showed constitutive homo-oligomerization of D-2L and D-2S receptors in Sf9 cells. When the FLAG-tagged D-2S and HIV-tagged D-2L receptors were co-expressed, co-immunoprecipitation showed that the two isoforms can also form hetero-oligomers in Sf9 cells. Time-resolved FRET with europium and XL665-labelled antibodies was applied to whole Sf9 cells and to membranes from Sf9 cells expressing epitope-tagged D-2 receptors. In both cases, constitutive homo-oligomers were revealed for D-2L and D-2S isoforms. Time-resolved FRET also revealed constitutive homo-oligomers in HEK293 cells expressing FLAG-tagged D-2S receptors. The D-2 receptor ligands dopamine, R-(-) propylnorapomorphine, and raclopride did not affect oligomerization of D-2L and D-2S in Sf9 and HEK293 cells. Human D-2 dopamine receptors can therefore form constitutive oligomers in Sf9 cells and in HEK293 cells that can be detected by different approaches, and D-2 oligomerization in these cells is not regulated by ligands.

The ability of new hydrophobic tridentate ligands based on 2,6-bis(benziinidazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine and 2,6-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)pyridine to selectively extract americium(III) from europium(III) was measured. The most promising ligand-2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-4-(2-decyl-1-tetradecyloxy)pyridine L-9 was found to give separation factors (SFAm/Eu) of up to 70 when used to extract cations from 0.02-0.10 M HNO3 into TPH in synergy with 2-bromodecanoic acid. Six structures of lanthanide complexes with 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine L-6 were then determined to evaluate the types of species that are likely to be involved in the separation process. Three structural types were observed, namely [LnL(6)(NO3)(3)(H2O)2], 11-coordinate only for La, [LnL(6) (NO3)(3) (CH3CN)], 10-coordinate for Pr, Nd and Eu and [LnL(6) (NO3)(3)(H2O)], L 10-coordinate for Eu and Gd. Quantum Mechanics calculations were carried out on the tridentate ligands to elucidate the conformational preferences of the ligands in the free state and protonated and diprotonated forms and to assess the electronic properties of the ligands for comparison with other terdentate ligands used in lanthanide/actinide separation processes.

Quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) have been developed to optimise the choice of nitrogen heterocyclic molecules that can be used to separate the minor actinides such as americium(III) from europium(III) in the aqueous PUREX raffinate of nuclear waste. Experimental data on distribution coefficients and separation factors (SFs) for 47 such ligands have been obtained and show SF values ranging from 0.61 to 100. The ligands were divided into a training set of 36 molecules to develop the QSAR and a test set of 11 molecules to validate the QSAR. Over 1500 molecular descriptors were calculated for each heterocycle and the Genetic Algorithm was used to select the most appropriate for use in multiple regression equations. Equations were developed fitting the separation factors to 6-8 molecular descriptors which gave r(2) values of >0.8 for the training set and values of >0.7 for the test set, thus showing good predictive quality. The descriptors used in the equations were primarily electronic and steric. These equations can be used to predict the separation factors of nitrogen heterocycles not yet synthesised and/or tested and hence obtain the most efficient ligands for lanthanide and actinide separation. The extraction of americium(III), curium(III), and the lanthanides(III) from nitric acid by 6,6'- bis (5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-benzo[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl)-[2,2'] bipyridine (CyMe4-BTBP) has been studied. Since the extraction kinetics were slow, N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-dioctyl-2-(2-hexyloxy-ethyl)malonamide (DMDOHEMA) was added as a phase transfer reagent. With a mixture of 0.01 M CyMe4-BTBP + 0.25 M DMDOHEMA in n -octanol, extraction equilibrium was reached within 5 min of mixing. At a nitric acid concentration of 1 M, an americium(III) distribution ratio of approx. 10 was achieved. Americium(III)/lanthanide(III) separation factors between 50 (dysprosium) and 1500 (lanthanum) were obtained. Whereas americium(III) and curium(III) were extracted as disolvates, the stoichiometries of the lanthanide(III) complexes were not identified unambiguously, owing to the presence of DMDOHEMA. In the absence of DMDOHEMA, both americium(III) and europium(III) were extracted as disolvates. Back-extraction with 0.1 M nitric acid was thermodynamically possible but rather slow. Using a buffered glycolate solution of pH=4, an americium(III) distribution ratio of 0.01 was obtained within 5 min of mixing. There was no evidence of degradation of the extractant, for example, the extraction performance of CyMe4-BTBP during hydrolylsis with 1 M nitric acid did not change over a two month contact.

New hydrophobic, tridentate nitrogen heterocyclic reagents (BATPs) such as 2,6-bis(5,5,8,8-tetramethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrobenzo[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl) pyridine (1) and 2,6-bis(9,9,10,10-tetramethyl-9,10-dihydro-1,2,4-triaza-anthrane-3-yl) pyridine (2) have been studied. I is resistant to hydrolysis in 3 M nitric acid, whereas 2 is resistant to both acid hydrolysis and radiolysis. The molecules are able to give significantly enhanced separations of americium(III) from an excess of europium(III) in nitric acid. Typically, for 1 D-Am = 500 and SFAm,/Eu = 5000 compared with D-Am = 30 and SFAm /Eu = 400 with the reference molecule 2,6-bis(isopropyl[1,2,4]triazin-3-yl) pyridine (7). In order to increase the stability of 1 and 2, the labile alpha-benzylic hydrogens that are present in 7 have been replaced by alkyl groups. Three molecules of 1 are able to enclose completely the coordination sphere of the M(III) in the crystal structure of [Y(1)(3)][Y(NO3)(5)]center dot NO3 center dot 2.5H(2)O.

It has been established that 6-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridines (R,hemi-BTPs) have properties which are intermediate between those of the terpyridines and the bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridines (BTPs). However, they resemble the terpyridines much more closely than the BTPs. It has been shown that Et, hemi-BTP when dissolved in TPH-a dodecane-like solvent-is a selective reagent for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III). Solution NMR in acetonitrile largely confirmed the crystallographic results. There was no evidence for a 1 : 3 complex cation, or for significant differences between metal(III)-N distances for the pyridine and 1,2,4-triazine rings. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a crucial role in the formation of metal coordination spheres, which explains the differences between the terpyridyl, R,hemi-BTPs and the BTPs. Protonation of the R,hemi-BTPs facilitates a conformational change which is necessary for complexation.

Multiple parallel synthesis and evaluation have been combined in order to identify new nitrogen heterocycles for the partitioning of minor actinides(III) such as americium(III) from lanthanides such as europium(Ill). An array of triazine-containing molecules was made using multiple parallel syntheses from diketones and amide hydrazides. An excess of each of the resulting purified reagents was dissolved in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane containing 2-bromodecanoic acid, and equilibrated with an aqueous solution containing the radiotracers Eu-152 and Am-241 in nitric acid ([Eu] + [Am] < 400 nanomol dm(-3)). Gamma counting of the organic and aqueous phases led to the identification of several new reagents for the selective extraction of americium(III). In particular, 6-(2-pyridyl)-2-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazaphenyl)pyridines were found to be effective reagents for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III), (SFAm/Eu was ca. 30 in [HNO3] = 0.013 mol/L).

Low doses of gamma radiation were given to four different solvents containing C5-BTBP and CyMe4-BTBP, each molecule dissolved both in cyclohexanone and hexanol. Four corresponding solvents were kept unirradiated and used as references for the extraction experiments. Multiple samples were taken from both the irradiated solutions and the reference solutions at certain time intervals. The samples were used in extraction experiments with the radionuclides Am-241 and Eu-152. The protection against radiolysis of the extracting molecules by the diluent used for dissolution without adding a scavenger molecule was checked. The interplay between the diluent and the side group of the extracting molecule for protection against radiolysis was also studied by keeping the same type of core molecule for binding to the metal ions and varying the diluent and side group. The results were unexpected. The presence of a cyclic molecule as both a side group or diluent seems to keep the extraction of europium almost unaffected by radiolysis, while americium behaves differently from solvent to solvent. The diluent alone does not protect the extracting molecule. In some of the studied systems there is a distinct change in the extraction behaviour of Am between the irradiated and reference solutions, an effect that is however only present at the beginning of the experimental series. At later times the difference in distribution ratios between the irradiated and reference solution is constant. This phenomenon is found only when the side group and diluent are structurally dissimilar.
