The heterogeneous solid catalyst, mercaptopropylsilica (MPS), has been prepared by a modified procedure in water and its structure confirmed by solid state carbon-13 CP-MAS NMR spectrum. This catalyst has been efficiently utilized for the synthesis of a wide variety of tri-, tetrasubstituted imidazoles and their bis-analogues at room temperature. The protocol was further explored for the synthesis of the drug trifenagrel.

Treatment of of (R,R)-N,N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine(H(2)L(1)) in methanol with aqueous NH(4)VO(3) solution in perchloric acid medium affords the mononuclear oxovanadium(V) complex [VOL(1)(MeOH)]-ClO(4) (1) as deep blue solid while the treatment of same solution of (R,R)-N,N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine(H(2)L(1)) with aqueous solution of VOSO(4) leads to the formation of di-(mu-oxo) bridged vanadium(V) complex [VO(2)L(2)](2) (2) as green solid where HL(2) = (R,R)-N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine. The ligand HL(2) is generated in situ by the hydrolysis of one of the imine bonds of HL(1) ligand during the course of formation of complex [VO(2)L(2)](2) (2). Both the compounds have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1 and 2 are to act as catalyst for the catalytic bromide oxidation and C-H bond oxidation in presence of hydrogen peroxide. The representative substrates 2,4-dimethoxy benzoic acid and para-hydroxy benzoic acids are brominated in presence of H(2)O(2) and KBr in acid medium using the above compounds as catalyst. The complexes are also used as catalyst for C-H bond activation of the representative hydrocarbons toluene, ethylbenzene and cyclohexane where hydrogen peroxide acts as terminal oxidant. The yield percentage and turnover number are also quite good for the above catalytic reaction. The oxidized products of hydrocarbons have been characterized by GC Analysis while the brominated products have been characterized by (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies.

The AB, monomer, 3,5-bis(3-hydroxylprop-1-ynyl)benzoic acid 1, has been synthesized using a Sonogashira cross-coupling with a palladium catalyst system developed for use with deactivated aryl halides. Numerous condensation methods have then been assessed in the homopolymerization of the acid-diol monomer 1 to afford hyperbranched polyesters. However, as a result of the thermal instability of the monomer, direct thermal polymerizations could not be employed. Alternative approaches using carbodiimide-coupling reagents enabled the production of soluble polyesters possessing molecular weights and degrees of branching ranging from 2500 to 11,000 and 0.22 to 0.33, respectively. Maculalactones A, B and C from the marine cyanobacterium Kyrtuthrix maculans are amongst the only compounds based on the tribenzylbutyrolactone skeleton known in nature and (+) maculalactone A from the natural source possesses significant biological activity against various marine herbivores and marine settlers. We now report a concise synthesis of racemic maculalactone A in five steps from inexpensive starting materials. Maculalactones B and C were synthesized by a minor modification to this procedure, and the synthetic design also permitted an asymmetric synthesis of maculalactone A to be achieved in around 85% ee. The (+) and (-) enantiomers of maculalactone A were assigned, respectively, to the S and R configurations on the basis of the chiral selectivity expected for catecholborane reduction of an unsymmetrical ketone in the presence of Corey's oxazoborolidine catalyst. Surprisingly, it appeared that natural (+) maculalactone A was biosynthesized in K. maculans in a partially racemic form, comprising ca. 90-95% of the (S) enantiomer and 5-10% of its (R) enantiomer. Coincidentally therefore, the percentage enantiomeric excess of the product obtained from asymmetric synthesis almost exactly matched that found in nature. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Reaction of anhydrous ZnCl2 with the 1:2 condensate (L) of benzil and 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine in methanol gives monomeric ZnL'Cl-2 (1) where L' is 2-[(4,5-diphenyl-2-pyridin-2-yl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-methyl]pyridine. In the X-ray crystal structure, 1 is found to contain tetrahedral zinc with an N2Cl2 coordination sphere and the N-substituent methylpyridine fragment hanging as a free arm. A tentative mechanism is proposed for the zinc mediated conversion of L-->L'. Demetallation of 1 by the action of aqueous NaOH yields L' in the free state. When L' is reacted with Zn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O in a 1:2 molar proportion, [Zn(L')(2)](n)(ClO4)(2n).(H2O)(n/2).(CH2Cl2)(n/2) (2) is obtained. The zinc atom in 2, as revealed by X-ray crystallography, has a trigonal bipyramidal N-5 coordination sphere. There are two independent ligands in the asymmetric unit of 2. One of them bonds only to one zinc atom in a bidentate mode with the N-substituent methylpyridine hanging free while the other ligand binds to two different zinc atoms in a tridentate fashion, employing the N-substituent methylpyridine nitrogen atom to form the polymeric one-dimensional chain cation.

[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCOXH)(H2O)] and PMePh3[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCO)] (PyCOXH = Pyridine-2-carboxaldoxime and PyCOH = Pyridine-2-carboxylic acid) have been synthesized. Both complexes have been characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods; in addition, the carboxylate complex has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The carboxylate complex is a more efficient catalyst than the oxime complex for epoxidation of olefins and shows excellent catalytic activity for the substrates: cyclooctene, cinnamyl alcohol, allyl alcohol and 1-hexene.

Four tridentate dibasic ONO donor hydrazone ligands derived from the condensation of benzoylhydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives (H2L1-4, general abbreviation H2L) have been used as primary ligands and 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq, a bidentate monobasic ON donor species) has been used as auxiliary ligand. The reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)21 with H2L in methanol followed by the addition of Hhq in equimolar ratio under aerobic condition afforded the mixed-ligand oxovanadium(V) complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] (1-4) in excellent yield. The X-ray structure of the compound [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(hq)] (4) indicates that the H2L4 ligand is bonded with vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its deprotonated phenolic-O, deprotonated enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The V-O bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. H-1 NMR spectra of 4 in CDCl3 solution indicates that it's solid-state structure is retained in solution. Complexes are diamagnetic and exhibit only ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition band near 530 nm in CH2Cl2 solution in addition to intra-ligand pi-pi* transition band near 335 rim and they display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. lambda(max) (for LMCT transition) and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values of the complexes are found to be linearly related with the Hammett (sigma) constants of the substituents in the aryloxy ring of the hydrazone ligands. lambda(max) and E-p(c) values show large dependence d lambda(max)/d sigma = 32.54 nm and dE(p)(c)/d sigma = 0.19 V, respectively, on the Hammett constant. The hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO3)(2).6H(2)O, disodium fumarate (fum) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)/1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) in aqueous-methanol medium yield one 3-D and one 2-D metal-organic hybrid material, [Ni(fum)(bpe)] (1) and [Ni(fum)(bpp)(H2O)] (2), respectively. Complex 1 possesses a novel unprecedented structure, the first example of an "unusual mode" of a five-fold distorted interpenetrated network with metal-ligand linkages where the four six-membered windows in each adamantane-type cage are different. The structural characterization of complex 2 evidences a buckled sheet where nickel ions are in a distorted octahedral geometry, with two carboxylic groups, one acting as a bis-chelate, the other as a bis-monodentate ligand. The metal ion completes the coordination sphere through one water molecule and two bpp nitrogens in cis position. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements of complexes 1 and 2 reveal the existence of very weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions and/or the presence of single-ion zero field splitting (D) of isolated Ni-II ions in both the compounds. Experimentally, both the J parameters are close, comparable and very small. Considering zero-field splitting of Ni-II, the calculated D values are in agreement with values reported in the literature for Ni-II ions. Complex 3, [{Co(phen)}(2)(fum)(2)] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is obtained by diffusing methanolic solution of 1,10-phenanthroline on an aqueous layer of disodium fumarate and Co(NO3)(2).6H(2)O. It consists of dimeric Co-II(phen) units, doubly bridged by carboxylate groups in a distorted syn-syn fashion. These fumarate anions act as bis-chelates to form corrugated sheets. The 2D layer has a (4,4) topology, with the nodes represented by the centres of the dimers. The magnetic data were fitted ignoring the very weak coupling through the fumarate pathway and using a dimer model.

Synthesis of well-defined nanoparticles has been intensively pursued not only for their fundamental scientific interest, but also for many technological applications. One important development of the nanomaterial is in the area of chemical catalysis. We have now developed a new aqueous-based method for the synthesis of silica encapsulated noble metal nanoparticles in controlled dimensions. Thus, colloid stable silica encapsulated similar to 5 nm platinum nanoparticle is synthesized by a multi-step method. The thickness of the silica coating could be controlled using a different amount of silica precursor. These particles supported on a high surface area alumina are also demonstrated to display a superior hydrogenation activity and stability against metal sintering after thermal activation.

A general approach for the synthesis of fused cyclic systems containing medium-sized rings (7-9) has been developed. The key steps involve a diastereoface-selective Diels-Alder reaction of the dienophiles 4a-d attached to a furanosugar with cyclopentadiene and ring opening (ROM)-ring closing metathesis (RCM) of the resulting norbornene derivatives 10a-d and 11a-d. Diels-Alder reaction of the dienophiles 4a-d with cyclopentadiene in the absence of a catalyst produced 10a-d as the major product arising through addition of the diene to the unhindered Si-face. The most interesting and new aspect of the Diels-Alder reaction of these dienophiles is the accessibility of the Re-face that was blocked by the alkenyl chains under Lewis acid catalysis producing the diastereoisomers 11a-d exclusively. The reversal of facial selectivity from an uncatalyzed reaction to a catalyzed one is unprecedented. The observed stereochemical dichotomy is attributed to rotation of the enone moiety along the or bond linking the sugar moiety during formation of the chelate 13. This makes the Re-face of the enone moiety in 4a-d unhindered. Diels-Alder reaction of the carbocyclic analogue 15 under Lewis acid catalysis produced a 1: 1 mixture of the adducts 16 and 17 confirming the participation of sugar ring oxygen in chelate formation. Finally ROM-RCM of 10a-d and 11a-d with Grubbs' catalyst afforded the cis-syn-cis and cis-anti-cis bicyclo-annulated sugars 21a-d and 23a-d, respectively, containing 7-9 membered rings.

[VIVO(acac)(2)] reacts with an equimolar amount of benzoyl hydrazone of 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L1) or 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L2) in the presence of excess pyridine (py) in methanol to produce the quaternary [(VO)-O-V(L-1)(OCH3)(py)] (1) and [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)(py)] (2) complexes, respectively, while under similar condition, the benzoyl hydrazones of 2-hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone (H2L3) and 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone (H2L4) afforded only the methoxy bridged dimeric [(VO)-O-V(L-3/L-4)(OCH3)](2) complexes. The X-ray structural analysis of 1 and 2 indicates that the geometry around the metal is distorted octahedral where the three equatorial positions are occupied by the phenolate-O, enolate-O and the imine-N of the fully deprotonated hydrazone ligand in its enolic form and the fourth one by a methoxide-O atom. An oxo-O and a pyridine-N atom occupy two axial positions. Quaternary complexes exhibit one quasi-reversible one-electron reduction peak near 0.25 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 and they decompose appreciably to the corresponding methoxy bridged dimeric complex in CDCl3 solution as indicated by their H-1 NMR spectra. These quaternary VO3+ complexes are converted to the corresponding V2O34+-complexes simply on refluxing them in acetone and to the VO2+-complexes on reaction with KOH in methanol. An equimolar amount of 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq) converts these quaternary complexes to the ternary [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes in CHCl3. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Dinuclear trioxidic [{VOL}(2)mu-O] (1-4) complexes were synthesized from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] with an equimolar amount of H2L [H2L is the general abbreviation of hydrazone ligands (H2L1-4) derived from the condensation of benzoyl hydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives] in acetone or CH2Cl2 or acetonitrile. These V2O3L2 complexes were also obtained from the reaction of VOSO4 with H2L in the presence of two equivalents sodium acetate in aqueous-methanolic (50% V/V) medium and also from the decomposition of [(VO)-O-IV(L)(bipy/phen)] complexes in CH2Cl2 Solution. Black monoclinic crystals of 2 and 4 with C2/c space group were obtained from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)], respectively, with H2L2 and H2L4 in acetone in which the respective ligands are bonded meridionally to vanadium in their fully deprotonated enol forms. The V-O bond lengths follow the order: V-O(oxo) < V-O(oxo-bridged) < V-O(phenolate) < V-O(enolate). Complexes (1-4) are diamagnetic exhibiting LMCT transition band near 380 nm in CH2Cl2 solution and they are electroactive displaying a quasi-reversible reduction peak in the 0.14-0.30 V versus SCE region. The and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values show linear relationships with the Hammett constant (sigma) of the substituents in the hydrazone ligands. These dinuclear complexes are converted to the corresponding mononuclear cis dioxo complexes K(H2O)(+)[(VO2)-O-V(L)](-) (5-8) and mixed-ligand [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes on reaction, respectively, with two equivalents KOH in methanol and two equivalents 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq) in CHCl3. Ascorbic acid reduces the dioxovanadium(V) complexes reversibly under aerobic condition. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Resumo:
Reaction of Ru(III)(L)(dmf)Cl-3 (1) (L = 4,4,4',4'-tetramethyl-2,2'- bisoxazoline, dmf = N,N-dimethylformamide) with an excess of sodium azide in a methanol-water mixture leads to the isolation of the sodium salt of a Ru( VI) nitrido complex of the tetraanion of N,N'-bis-(2,2-dimethyl-1-hydroxyethyl)-1,2-ethanediamide ( L'H-4; H a dissociable proton) of the formulation Na[Ru(L')(N)(H2O)].1.4H(2)O (2). Complex 2 is not generated in the absence of light. A tentative mechanism for the reaction is proposed and a Ru(IV) intermediate, Na[Ru(L')(N-3)(H2O)] . 2CH(3)OH.2H(2)O (3), isolated.
