X-ray crystal structure shows that 3,5-dimethyl-1-(2-nitrophenyl)-1H-pyrazole (DNP) belongs to the rare class of helically twisted synthetic organic molecules. Hydrogenation of DNP gives 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-yl)phenylamine (L) which on methylation yields [2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazole-1-yl)phenyl]dimethylamine (L'). Two Pd(II) complexes, PdLCl2 (1) and PdL'Cl-2 (2), are synthesized and characterized by NMR. X-ray crystallography reveals that 1 and 2 are unprecedented square planar complexes which possess well discernible helical twists. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new ruthenium complexes of the formulae cis-[Ru(PPh3)(2)(BzTscbz)(2)] (1a), [Ru-2(PPh3)(2)(BzTscbz)(4)] (1b) and [Ru(PPh3)(2)(BzTscHbz)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2) [BzTscHbz = 4-(phenyl) thiosemicarbazone of benzaldehyde] have been synthesized and characterized by various physicochemical methods including X-ray structure determinations for 1a and 1b. The relative stabilities of the four-membered versus five-membered chelate rings formed by the deprotonated ligand BzTscbz are discussed on the basis of the experimental results and some semi-empirical as well as DFT calculations. The reaction of the redox-active ligand, Hpyramol (4-methyl-2-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminophenol) with K2PtCl4 yields monofunctional square-planar [Pt(pyrimol)Cl], PtL-Cl, which was structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. This compound unexpectedly cleaves supercoiled double-stranded DNA stoichiometrically and oxidatively, in a non-specific manner without any external reductant added, under physiological conditions. Spectro-electrochemical investigations of PtL-Cl were carried out in comparison with the analogue CuL-Cl as a reference compound. The results support a phenolate oxidation, generating a phenoxyl radical responsible for the ligand-based DNA cleavage property of the title compounds. Time-dependent in vitro cytotoxicity assays were performed with both PtL-Cl and CuL-Cl in various cancer cell lines. The compound CuL-Cl overcomes cisplatin-resistance in ovarian carcinoma and mouse leukaemia cell lines, with additional activity in some other cells. The platinum analogue, PtL-Cl also inhibits cell-proliferation selectively. Additionally, cellular-uptake studies performed for both compounds in ovarian carcinoma cell lines showed that significant amounts of Pt and Cu were accumulated in the A2780 and A2780R cancer cells. The conformational and structural changes induced by PtL-Cl and CuL-Cl on calf thymus DNA and phi X174 supercoiled phage DNA at ambient conditions were followed by electrophoretic mobility assay and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The compounds induce extensive DNA degradation and unwinding, along with formation of a monoadduct at the DNA minor groove. Thus, hybrid effects of metal-centre variation, multiple DNA-binding modes and ligand-based redox activity towards cancer cell-growth inhibition have been demonstrated. Finally, reactions of PtL-Cl with DNA model bases (9-Ethylguanine and 5'-GMP) followed by NMR and MS showed slow binding at Guanine-N7 and for the double stranded self complimentary oligonucleotide d(GTCGAC)(2) in the minor groove.

A palladium-catalyzed Stille coupling reaction was employed as a versatile method for the synthesis of a novel terpyridine-pincer (3, TPBr) bridging ligand, 4'-{4-BrC6H2(CH2NMe2)(2)-3,5}-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine. Mononuclear species [PdX(TP)] (X = Br, Cl), [Ru(TPBr)(tpy)](PF6)(2), and [Ru(TPBr)(2)](PF6)(2), synthesized by selective metalation of the NCNBr-pincer moiety or complexation of the terpyridine of the bifunctional ligand TPBr, were used as building blocks for the preparation of heterodi- and trimetallic complexes [Ru(TPPdCl)(tpy)](PF6)(2) (7) and [Ru(TPPdCl)(2)]-(PF6)(2) (8). The molecular structures in the solid state of [PdBr(TP)] (4a) and [Ru(TPBr)(2)](PF6)(2) (6) have been determined by single-crystal X-ray analysis. Electrochemical behavior and photophysical properties of the mono-and heterometallic complexes are described. All the above di- and trimetallic Ru complexes exhibit absorption bands attributable to (MLCT)-M-1 (Ru -> tpy) transitions. For the heteroleptic complexes, the transitions involving the unsubstituted tpy ligand are at a lower energy than the tpy moiety of the TPBr ligand. The absorption bands observed in the electronic spectra for TPBr and [PdCl(TP)] have been assigned with the aid of TD-DFT calculations. All complexes display weak emission both at room temperature and in a butyronitrile glass at 77 K. The considerable red shift of the emission maxima relative to the signal of the reference compound [Ru(tpy)(2)](2+) indicates stabilization of the luminescent (MLCT)-M-3 state. For the mono- and heterometallic complexes, electrochemical and spectroscopic studies (electronic absorption and emission spectra and luminescence lifetimes recorded at room temperature and 77 K in nitrile solvents), together with the information gained from IR spectroelectrochemical studies of the dimetallic complex [Ru(TPPdSCN)(tpy)](PF6)(2), are indicative of charge redistribution through the bridging ligand TPBr. The results are in line with a weak coupling between the {Ru(tpy)(2)} chromophoric unit and the (non)metalated NCN-pincer moiety.

Addition of 1,4-dithiols to dichloromethane solutions of [PtCl2(P-P)] (P-P = (PPh3)2, Ph2P(CH2)3PPh2, Phd2P(CH2)4PPh2; 1,4-dithiols = HS(CH2)4SH, (−)DIOSH2 (2,3-O-isopropylidene-1,4-dithiol-l-threitol), BINASH2 (1,1′-dinaphthalene-2,2′-dithiol)) in the presence of NEt3 yielded the mononuclear complexes [Pt(1,4-dithiolato)(P-P)]. Related palladium(II) complexes [Pd(dithiolato)(P-P)] (P-P=Ph2P(CH2)3PPh2, Ph2P(CH2)4PPh2; dithiolato = −S(CH2)4S−, (−)-DIOS) were prepared by the same method. The structure of [Pt((−)DIOS)(PPh3)2] and [Pd(S(CH2)4S)(Ph2P(CH2)3PPh2)] complexes was determined by X-ray diffraction methods. Pt—dithiolato—SnC12 systems are active in the hydroformylation of styrene. At 100 atm and 125°C [Pt(dithiolate)(P-P)]/SnCl2 (Pt:Sn = 20) systems provided aldehyde conversion up to 80%.

[Cu2(μO2CCH3)4(H2O)2], [CuCO3·Cu(OH)2], [CoSO4·7H2O], [Co((+)-tartrate)], and [FeSO4·7H2O] react with excess racemic (±)- 1,1′-binaphthyl-2,2′-diyl hydrogen phosphate {(±)-PhosH} to give mononuclear CuII, CoII and FeII products. The cobalt product, [Co(CH3OH)4(H2O)2]((+)-Phos)((−)-Phos) ·2CH3OH·H2O (7), has been identified by X-ray diffraction. The high-spin, octahedral CoII atom is ligated by four equatorial methanol molecules and two axial water molecules. A (+)- and a (−)-Phos− ion are associated with each molecule of the complex but are not coordinated to the metal centre. For the other CoII, CuII and FeII samples of similar formulation to (7) it is also thought that the Phos− ions are not bonded directly to the metal. When some of the CuII and CoII samples are heated under high vacuum there is evidence that the Phos− ions are coordinated directly to the metals in the products.

Two novel, monomeric heteroleptic tin(II) derivatives, [Sn{2-[(Me3Si)2C]C5H4N}R] [R = C6H2Pri3-2,4,6 1 or CH(PPh2)2 2], have been prepared, characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopies and their molecular structures determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both compounds were prepared from the corresponding heteroleptic tin(II) chloro-analogue, [Sn{2-[(Me3Si)2C]C5H4N}Cl], and thus demonstrate the utility of this compound as a precursor to further examples of heteroleptic tin(II) derivatives: such compounds are often unstable with respect to ligand redistribution. In each case, the central tin(II) is three-co-ordinate. Crystals of trimeric [{Sn(C6H2Pri3-2,4,6)2}3] 3 were found to undergo a solid state phase transition, which may be ascribed to ordering of the ligand isopropyl groups. At 220 K the unit cell is orthorhombic, space group Pna21, compared with monoclinic, space group P21/c, for the same crystals at 298 K, in which there is an effective tripling of the now b (originally c) axis. This result illustrates the extreme crowding generated by this bulky aryl ligand.

Water soluble anionic and cationic bis-triazine ligands are able to suppress (mask) the extraction of corrosion and fission products such as Ni(II) and Pd(II) that are found in PUREX raffinates. Thus it is possible to separate these elements from the minor actinide Am(III). Although some masking agents have previously been developed that retard the extraction of Pd(II), this is the first time a masking agent has been developed for Ni(II).

Propylene polymerization using salicyladiminato metal catalalysts has been studied using density functional theory at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. In particular, the effects on the reaction mechanisms of changing the metal from Pd(II) to Ni(II) have been investigated. While the reaction mechanisms involving the salicyladiminato Ni(II) catalyst have been found to be similar to those established previously for the salicyladiminato Pd(II) catalyst, the nickel catalyst was found to differentiate the trans-O intermediate from the trans-.N intermediate with an energy difference of 46.63 U mol(-1) significantly more than the palladium catalyst for which the energy difference was calculated as 35.82 kJ mol(-1). The energy difference between the trans-O configuration and the trans-N configuration is decreased significantly when combining a molecule of propylene with the catalyst. For the Ni catalyst, the trans-O isomer is more stable than the trans-N isomer to a greater extent than for Pd, so that the insertion of propylene from 20 is relatively less favoured for Ni than for Pd. It is predicted that the mechanism of isomerization from 20 to 2N through a rotational transition state TS2O2N is more appropriate for the Ni catalyst system. The palladium system shows a larger preference for pi-coordination than its nickel counterpart, although the latter possesses a lower reaction barrier. It was found that the occupation of the trans-O position in the asymmetric salicyladiminato catalyst is also more favored by the alkene as it is by the alkyl so that insertion of the alkene may always start from a particular configuration so that specific products are obtained. The previously synthesised Schiff-base ligands 2-(2-Ph2PC6H4N = CH) - R' - C6H3OH (R' = 3-OCH3, HL1; 5-OCH3, HL2; 5-Br, HL3; 5-Cl, HL4) were prepared by a faster, more efficient route involving a microwave assisted co-condensation of 2-(diphenylphosphino) aniline with the appropriate substituted salicylaldehyde. HL1-4 react directly with (MCl2)-Cl-II (M = Pd, Pt) or (PtI2)-I-II(cod) affording neutral square-planar complexes of general formula [(MCl)-Cl-II(eta(3)-L1-4)] (M = Pd, Pt, 1 - 8) and [(PtI)-I-II(eta(3)-L1-4)] (M = Pd, Pt, 9 - 12). Reaction of complexes 1 - 4 with the triarylphosphines PR3 (R = Ph, p-tolyl) gave the novel ionic complexes [Pd-II(PR3)(eta(3)- L1-4)] ClO4 (13 - 20). Substituted platinum complexes of the type [Pt-II(PR3)(eta(3)- L1-4)] ClO4 (R = P(CH2CH2CN)(3) 21 - 24) and [Pt-II( P(p-tolyl)(3))(eta(3)-L-3,L-4)] ClO4 ( 25 and 26) were synthesised from the appropriate [(PtCl)-Cl-II(eta(3)-L1-4)] complex (5 - 8) and PR3. The complexes are characterised by microanalytical and spectroscopic techniques. The crystal structures of 3, 6, 10, 15, 20 and 26 were determined and revealed the metal to be in a square-planar four-coordinate environment containing a planar tridentate ligand with an O, N, P donor set together with one further atom which is trans to the central nitrogen atom.

New Pd(II), Pt(II) and Re(V) complexes of 3-aminosalicylic acid (H(2)salNH(2)) and 3-hydroxyantranilic acid (HantOH) have been prepared, cis-[Pt (HsalNH)(PPh3)(2)] center dot 0.25C(2)H(5)OH (1), trans-[PdCl(salNH(2))(PPh3)(2)](2), trans-[ReOI2(HsalNH(2))(PPh3)] center dot (CH3)(2)CO (3), cis-[Pt(HantO)(PPh3)(2)] (4), trans-[PdCl(antOH)(PPh3)(2)] center dot 4H(2)O (5), [PdCl(antOH)(bipy)] center dot C2H5OH (6), [PdCl2(HantOH)(2)] (7) and trans-[ReOI(HantO)(PPh3)(2)] center dot (CH3)(2)CO (8). The crystal structure of complex I was determined showing chelation of HsalNH(2-) through the adjacent nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the amino and phenolate groups. Infrared and H-1 NMR spectroscopic data for the complexes are presented. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The rigid [6]ferrocenophane, L-1, was synthesised by condensation of 1,1'-ferrocene dicarbaldehyde with trans-1,2-diaminocyclohexane in high dilution at r.t. followed by reduction. When other experimental conditions were employed, the [6,6,6]ferrocenephane (L-2) was also obtained. Both compounds were characterised by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The protonation of L-1 and its metal complexation were evaluated by the effect on the electron-transfer process of the ferrocene (fc) unit of L-1 using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) in anhydrous CH3CN solution and in 0.1 M (Bu4NPF6)-Bu-n as the supporting electrolyte. The electrochemical process of L-1 between 300 and 900 mV is complicated by amine oxidation. On the other hand, an anodic shift from the fc/fc(+) wave of L-1 of 249, 225, 81 and 61 mV was observed by formation of Zn2+, Ni2+, Pd2+ and Cu2+ complexes, respectively. Whereas Mg2+ and Ca2+ only have with L-1 weak interactions and they promote the acid-base equilibrium of L-1. This reveals that L-1 is an interesting molecular redox sensor for detection of Zn2+ and Ni2+, although the kinetics of the Zn2+ complex formation is much faster than that of the Ni2+ one. The X-ray crystal structure of [(PdLCl2)-Cl-1] was determined and showed a square-planar environment with Pd(II) and Fe(II) centres separated by 3.781(1) angstrom. The experimental anodic shifts were elucidated by DFT calculations on the [(MLCl2)-Cl-1] series and they are related to the nature of the HOMO of these complexes and a four-electron, two-orbital interaction.

The o-palladated, chloro-bridged dimers [Pd{2-phenylpyridine(-H)}-μ-Cl]2 and [Pd{N,N-dimethylbenzylamine(-H)}-μ-Cl]2 react with cyanuric acid in the presence of base to afford closed, chiral cage-molecules in which twelve organo-Pd(II) centers, located in pairs at the vertices of an octahedron, are linked by four tetrahedrally-arranged cyanurato(3-) ligands. Incomplete (Pd10) cages, having structures derived from the corresponding Pd12 cages by replacing one pair of organopalladium centers with two protons, have also been isolated. Reaction of [Pd{2-phenylpyridine(-H)}-μ-Cl]2 with trithiocyanuric acid gives an entirely different and more open type of cage-complex, comprising only nine organopalladium centers and three thiocyanurato(3-) ligands: cage-closure in this latter system appears to be inhibited by steric crowding of the thiocarbonyl groups.

The reactions of the low-temperature polymorph of copper(I) cyanide (LT-CuCN) with concentrated aqueous alkali-metal halide solutions have been investigated. At room temperature, KX (X = Br and I) and CsX (X = Cl, Br, and I) produce the addition products K[Cu-2(CN)(2)Br](H2O)-H-. (I), K-3[Cu-6(CN)(6)I-3](.)2H(2)O (II), Cs[Cu-3(CN)(3)Cl] (III), Cs[Cu-3(CN)(3)Br] (IV), and Cs-2[Cu-4(CN)(4)I-2](H2O)-H-. (V), with 3-D frameworks in which the -(CuCN)- chains present in CuCN persist. No reaction occurs, however, with NaX (X = Cl, Br, I) or KCl. The addition compounds, I-V, reconvert to CuCN when washed. Both low- and high-temperature polymorphs of CuCN (LT- and HT-CuCN) are produced, except in the case of Cs[Cu-3(CN)(3)Cl] (III), which converts only to LT-CuCN. Heating similar AX-CuCN reaction mixtures under hydrothermal conditions at 453 K for 1 day produces single crystals of I-V suitable for structure determination. Under these more forcing conditions, reactions also occur with NaX (X = Cl, Br, I) and KCl. NaBr and KCl cause some conversion of LT-CuCN into HT-CuCN, while NaCl and NaI, respectively, react to form the mixed-valence Cu(I)/Cu(II) compounds [Cu-II(OH2)(4)][Cu-4(I)(CN)(6)], a known phase, and [Cu-II(OH2)(4)][Cu-4(I)(CN)(4)I-2] (VI), a 3-D framework, which contains infinite -(CuCN)- chains. After 3 days of heating under hydrothermal conditions, the reaction between KI and CuCN produces [Cu-II(OH2)(4)][Cu-2(I)(CN)I-2](2) (VII), in which the CuCN chains are broken into single Cu-CN-Cu units, which in turn are linked into chains via iodine atoms and then into layers via long Cu-C and Cu-Cu interactions.

Two new complex salts of the form (Bu4N)(2)[Ni(L)(2)] (1) and (Ph4P)(2)[Ni(L)(2)] (2) and four heteroleptic complexes cis-M(PPh3)(2)(L) [M = Ni(II) (3), Pd(II) (4), L = 4-CH3OC6H4SO2N=CS2] and cis-M(PPh3)(2)(L') [M = Pd(II) (5), Pt(II) (6), L' = C6H5SO2N=CS2] were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR and UV-Vis spectra, solution and solid phase conductivity measurements and X-ray crystallography. A minor product trans-Pd(PPh3)(2)(SH)(2), 4a was also obtained with the synthesis of 4. The NiS4 and MP2S2 core in the complex salts and heteroleptic complexes are in the distorted square-plane whereas in the trans complex, 4a the centrosymmetric PdS2P2 core is perforce square planar. X-ray crystallography revealed the proximity of the ortho phenyl proton of the PPh3 ligand to Pd(II) showing rare intramolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot Pd anagostic binding interactions in the palladium cis-5 and trans-4a complexes. The complex salts with sigma(rt) values similar to 10 (5) S cm (1) show semi-conductor behaviors. The palladium and platinum complexes show photoluminescence properties in solution at room temperature.
