The structures of intermediates formed in propylene polymerisation using neutral salicyladiminato palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes as catalysts have been investigated using density functional theory. Calculations show that all low energy intermediates contain agostic interactions either between the metal and a hydrogen from the added propylene forming four- or five-membered chelate rings, or, when a phenyl ring is present, between the metal and an aromatic C-C bond. The agostic interactions with the metal are concomitant with changes in ligand dimensions and electronic properties. In particular when a metal to hydrogen bond is formed, there is a lengthening of the C-H bond. Significant differences are found for the agostic interactions with palladium and nickel in that for Pd there is a clear preference for specific intermediates but for Ni there are several different structures with similar energies which are likely to lead to a greater variety of products on further polymerisation. External reflection FTIR spectroscopy and surface pressure measurements were used to compare conformational changes in the adsorbed structures of three globular proteins at the air/water interface. Of the three proteins studied, lysozyme, bovine serum albumin and P-lactoglobulin, lysozyme was unique in its behaviour. Lysozyme adsorption was slow, taking approximately 2.5 h to reach a surface pressure plateau (from a 0.07 mM solution), and led to significant structural change. The FTIR spectra revealed that lysozyme formed a highly networked adsorbed layer of unfolded protein with high antiparallel beta-sheet content and that these changes occurred rapidly (within 10 min). This non-native secondary structure is analogous to that of a 3D heat-set protein gel, suggesting that the adsorbed protein formed a highly networked interfacial layer. Albumin and P-lactoglobulin adsorbed rapidly (reaching a plateau within 10 min) and with little chance to their native secondary structure.

A combination of photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption and low energy electron diffraction structure determinations have been applied to study the p(2 x 2) structures of pure hydrogen and co-adsorbed hydrogen and CO on Ni {111}. In agreement with earlier work atomic hydrogen is found to adsorb on fcc and hcp sites in the pure layer with H-Ni bond lengths of 1.74Angstrom. The substrate interlayer distances, d(12) = 2.05Angstrom and d(23) = 2.06Angstrom, are expanded with respect to clean Ni {111} with buckling of 0.04Angstrom in the first layer. In the co-adsorbed phase Co occupies hcp sites and only the hydrogen atoms on fcc sites remain on the surface. d(12) is even further expanded to 2.08Angstrom with buckling in the first and second layer of 0.06 and 0.02Angstrom, respectively. The C-O, C-Ni, and H-Ni bond lengths are within the range of values also found for the pure adsorbates.

Low energy electron diffraction (LEED) structure determinations have been performed for the p(2 x 2) structures of pure oxygen and oxygen co-adsorbed with CO on Ni{111}. Optimisation of the non-geometric parameters led to very good agreement between experimental and theoretical IV-curves and hence to a high accuracy in the structural parameters. In agreement with earlier work atomic oxygen is found to adsorb on fee sites in both structures. In the co-adsorbed phase CO occupies atop sites. The positions of the substrate atoms are almost identical, within 0.02 Angstrom, in both structures, implying that the interaction with oxygen dominates the arrangement of Ni atoms at the surface.

We have determined the structure of a complex rhodium carbonyl chloride [Rh(CO)(2)Cl] molecule adsorbed on the TiO2 (110) surface by the normal incidence x-ray standing wave technique. The data show that the technique is applicable to reducible oxide systems and that the dominant adsorbed species is undissociated with Rh binding atop bridging oxygen and to the Cl found close to the fivefold coordinated Ti ions in the surface. A minority geminal dicarboryl species, where Rh-Cl bond scission has occurred, is found bridging the bridging oxygen ions forming a high-symmetry site.

A new mild method has been devised for generating o-(naphtho)quinone methides via fluoride-induced desilylation of silyl derivatives of o-hydroxybenzyl(or 1-naphthylmethyl) nitrate. The reactive o-(naphtho)quinone methide intermediates were trapped by C, O, N and S nucleophiles and underwent “inverse electron-demand” hetero Diels- Alder reaction with dienophiles to give stable adducts. The method has useful potential application in natural product synthesis and drug research

The plant defence proteins α1- and α2-purothionin (Pth) are type 1 thionins from common wheat (Triticum aestivum). These highly homologous proteins possess characteristics common amongst antimicrobial peptides and proteins, that is, cationic charge, amphiphilicity and hydrophobicity. Both α1- and α2-Pth possess the same net charge, but differ in relative hydrophobicity as determined by C18 reversed phase HPLC. Brewster angle microscopy, X-ray and neutron reflectometry, external reflection FTIR and associated surface pressure measurements demonstrated that α1 and α2-Pth interact strongly with condensed phase 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-(1'-rac-glycerol) (DPPG) monolayers at the air/liquid interface. Both thionins disrupted the in-plane structure of the anionic phospholipid monolayer, removing lipid during this process and both penetrated the lipid monolayer in addition to adsorbing as a single protein layer to the lipid head-group. However, analysis of the interfacial structures revealed that the α2-Pth showed faster disruption of the lipid film and removed more phospholipid (12%) from the interface than α1-Pth. Correlating the protein properties and lipid binding activity suggests that hydrophobicity plays a key role in the membrane lipid removal activity of thionins.

The electronic structure and oxidation state of atomic Au adsorbed on a perfect CeO2(111) surface have been investigated in detail by means of periodic density functional theory-based calculations, using the LDA+U and GGA+U potentials for a broad range of U values, complemented with calculations employing the HSE06 hybrid functional. In addition, the effects of the lattice parameter a0 and of the starting point for the geometry optimization have also been analyzed. From the present results we suggest that the oxidation state of single Au atoms on CeO2(111) predicted by LDA+U, GGA+U, and HSE06 density functional calculations is not conclusive and that the final picture strongly depends on the method chosen and on the construction of the surface model. In some cases we have been able to locate two well-defined states which are close in energy but with very different electronic structure and local geometries, one with Au fully oxidized and one with neutral Au. The energy difference between the two states is typically within the limits of the accuracy of the present exchange-correlation potentials, and therefore, a clear lowest-energy state cannot be identified. These results suggest the possibility of a dynamic distribution of Au0 and Au+ atomic species at the regular sites of the CeO2(111) surface.

We present a general approach based on nonequilibrium thermodynamics for bridging the gap between a well-defined microscopic model and the macroscopic rheology of particle-stabilised interfaces. Our approach is illustrated by starting with a microscopic model of hard ellipsoids confined to a planar surface, which is intended to simply represent a particle-stabilised fluid–fluid interface. More complex microscopic models can be readily handled using the methods outlined in this paper. From the aforementioned microscopic starting point, we obtain the macroscopic, constitutive equations using a combination of systematic coarse-graining, computer experiments and Hamiltonian dynamics. Exemplary numerical solutions of the constitutive equations are given for a variety of experimentally relevant flow situations to explore the rheological behaviour of our model. In particular, we calculate the shear and dilatational moduli of the interface over a wide range of surface coverages, ranging from the dilute isotropic regime, to the concentrated nematic regime.
