Quaternary-aged calcrete horizons are common weathering products in arid and semi-arid regions. It is, however, unclear how calcrete forming processes respond to the major oscillations in climate that occur over the Quaternary period. This paper presents a U-series-based calcrete age database from the Sorbas basin, southeast Spain. The study constructs an age frequency distribution of these ages which is consequently compared to a range of palaeoenvironmental records from the Mediterranean. The age distribution presented here suggests that the formation of pedogenic calcrete horizons in the Sorbas basin primarily occurs during 'warm' isotope stages (MIS 1 and 5), with very few calcrete ages occurring during cold glacial/stadial stages (MIS 2, 3 and 4). It is suggested that this is a function of the environments that existed during 'warm' isotope stages being more conducive to calcrete development than those that existed during cold climate episodes. In a semi-arid region such as the Sorbas basin it is likely that increased aridity during glacial stages, coupled with reduced vegetation and accelerated landscape instability, was crucial in reducing rates of calcrete formation. In a semi-arid region such as southeast Spain, calcrete formation during the Quaternary, therefore, oscillates with climate change but is primarily a "warm" episode phenomenon. It is suggested that further studies are required to see how calcrete genesis responds to environmental change in more humid parts of the Mediterranean. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Pectins and pectic-oligosaccharides, as derived by controlled enzymatic hydrolysis, were evaluated for their ability to interfere with the toxicity of Shiga-like toxins from Escherichia coli O157:H7. Both types of material resulted in some degree of protection but this was significantly higher (P > 0.01) with the oligosaccharide fractions (giving 90-100% cell survival, compared to 70-80% with the polymer). An effect of methylation on the protective effect was detected with lower degrees being more active. The pectic-oligosaccharides and galabiose, the minimum toxin receptor analogue, were shown to inhibit toxicity and were both protective at 10 mg ml(-1), but not at lower concentrations. The compound bis[1,1'-N,N'-(2-picolyl) aminomethyl] ferrocene, L-1, was synthesized. The protonation constants of this ligand and the stability constants of its complexes with Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ were determined in aqueous solution by potentiometric methods at 25degreesC and at ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO3. The compound L-1 forms only 1:1 (M:L) complexes with Pb2+ and Cd2+ while with Ni2+ and Cu2+ species of 2:1 ratio were also found. The complexing behaviour of L-1 is regulated by the constraint imposed by the ferrocene in its backbone, leading to lower values of stability constants for complexes of the divalent first row transition metals when compared with related ligands. However, the differences in stability are smaller for the larger metal ions. The structure of the copper complex with L-1 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and shows that a species of 2:2 ratio is formed. The two copper centres display distorted octahedral geometries and are linked through the two L1 bridges at a long distance of 8.781(10) Angstrom. The electrochemical behaviour of L-1 was studied in the presence of Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+, showing that upon complexation the ferrocene-ferrocenium half-wave potential shifts anodically in relation to that of the free ligand. The maximum electrochemical shift (DeltaE(1/2)) of 268 mV was found in the presence of Pb2+, followed by Cu2+ (218 mV), Ni2+ (152 mV), Zn2+ (111 mV) and Cd2+ (110 mV). Moreover, L-1 is able to electrochemically and selectively sense Cu2+ in the presence of a large excess of the other transition metal cations studied.

Studies of the 1H n.m.r. and electronic spectra of a series of alkenylferrocenes including (E) and (Z) stereoisomers of various styrylferrocenes, have provided methods of structure elucidation. Crystals of the title compound are monoclinic, space group P21/c with Z= 4 in a unit cell of dimensions a= 17.603(2), b= 10.218(2), c= 10.072 Å, β= 103.27(2)°. The structure has been determined by the heavy-atom method from diffractometer data and refind by full-matrix least-squares techniques to R= 0.043 for 2 219 unique reflections.

Background DNA methylation of promoter-associated CpG islands of certain genes may play a role in the development of colorectal cancer. The MYOD-1 gene which is a muscle differentiation gene has been showed to be significantly methylated in colorectal cancer which, is an age related event. However the role of this gene in the colonic mucosa is not understood and whether methylation occurs in subjects without colon cancer. In this study, we have determined the frequency of methylation of the MYOD-1 gene in normal colonic mucosa and investigated to see if this is associated with established colorectal cancer risk factors primarily ageing. Results We analysed colonic mucosal biopsies in 218 normal individuals and demonstrated that in most individuals promoter hypermethylation was not quantified for MYOD-1. However, promoter hypermethylation increased significantly with age (p < 0.001 using regression analysis) and this was gender independent. We also showed that gene promoter methylation increased positively with an increase in waist to hip (WHR) ratio - the latter is also a known risk factor for colon cancer development. Conclusions Our study suggests that promoter gene hypermethylation of the MYOD-1 gene increases significantly with age in normal individuals and thus may offer potential as a putative biomarker for colorectal cancer.
