The sweet natural compound monatin 1 has two stereogenic centres and the (2S,4S) absolute configuration has been attributed to the natural isomer. We obtained all four stereoisomers as pure compounds by a six-step synthetic sequence. The stereogenic centre at C-4 was introduced stereoselectively by a regio- and enantiospecific enzymatic hydrolysis of the racemic ethyl dicarboxylate 4 using a protease from Aspergillus oryzae. The absolute configuration of the intermediate products was assigned by X-ray diffraction of chiral derivatives. The stereogenic centre at C-2 was introduced non-specifically, and the resulting diastereomeric mixtures were separated by RP-HPLC. The absolute configurations of the final products were established by comparing retention times on a chiral HPLC column with those of known samples. The four stereoisomers were submitted to tasting trials and three of them, particularly the (2R,4R) isomer, were found to be intensely sweet. A sample of natural monatin analysed under the same conditions is shown to contain all the four stereoisomers. The relative stereoisomeric content in the plant, as well as the possible isomerisation of the chiral centres during extraction and manipulation of monatin samples, are important points that need to be clarified by extensive analysis of the natural extracts. Theaza-Darzens ('ADZ') reactions off-diphenylphosphinyl (W-Dpp') imines with chiral enolates derived from oxazolidinones and camphorsultam have been Studied. Whilst oxazolidinone enolates reacted poorly in terms of aziridination, the use of the chiral enolate derived from both antipodes of N-bromoacetyl 2, 10-camphorsultam, 2R-(5) and 2S-(5), with N-diphehenylphosphinyl aryl and tert-butylimines proceeded in generally good yield to give, respectively, (2'R,3'R)- or (2'S,3'S)-cis-N-diphenylphosphinyl aziridinoyl sultams of high de. In this paper we consider a cooperative communication system where some a priori information of wireless channels is available at the transmitter. Several opportunistic relaying strategies are developed to fully utilize the available channel information. Then an explicit expression of the outage probability is developed for each proposed cooperative scheme as well as the diversity-multiplexing tradeoff by using order statistics. Our analytical results show that the more channel information available at the transmitter, the better performance a cooperative system can achieve. When the exact values of the source-relay channels are available, the performance loss at low SNR can be effectively suppressed. When the source node has the access to the source-relay and relay-destination channels, the full diversity can be achieved by costing only one extra channel used for relaying transmission, and an optimal diversity-multiplexing tradeoff can be achieved d(r) = (N + 1)(1 - 2r), where N is the number of all possible relaying nodes.

Plant-derived proanthocyanidins (PAC) have been promoted as a natural method of improving health and immune function in livestock. It has previously been shown that PAC are effective agonists for activating ruminant γδ T-cells in vitro, however effects on other livestock species are not yet clear. Moreover, the fine structural characteristics of the PAC which contribute to this stimulatory effect have not been elucidated. Here, we demonstrate activation of porcine γδ T-cells by PAC via up-regulation of CD25 (IL-2Rα) and show that 1) activation is dependent on degree of polymerization (DP), with PAC fractions containing polymers with mean DP >6 significantly more effective than fractions with mean DP <6, whilst flavan-3-ol monomers (the constituent monomeric units of PAC) did not induce CD25 expression and 2) both procyanidin and prodelphinidin-type PAC are effective agonists. Furthermore, we show that this effect of PAC is restricted to the γδ T-cell population within porcine peripheral mononuclear cells as significant CD25 up-regulation was not observed in non γδ T-cells, and no activation (via CD80/86 up-regulation) was evident in monocytes. Our results show that dietary PAC may contribute to enhancement of innate immunity in swine via activation of γδ T-cells.
