From the reaction of Cd(CH3COO)(2)(.)2H(2)O with the 1:2 condensate (L) of benzil dihydrazone and 2-acetylpyridine, [CdL(CH3COO)(H2O)]PF(6)(.)3H(2)O (1) is isolated by adding NH4PF6. L reacts with Cd(ClO4)(2)(.)xH(2)O to yield [CdL2](ClO4)(2). 0.5H(2)O (2). The yellowish complexes 1 and 2 are characterized by NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. 1 is found to be a seven-coordinate single helical complex having a (CdN4O3)-N-II core and homoleptic 2 an eight-coordinate double helical complex with a (CdN8)-N-II core. Reaction of anhydrous ZnCl2 with the 1:2 condensate (L) of benzil and 2-(aminomethyl)pyridine in methanol gives monomeric ZnL'Cl-2 (1) where L' is 2-[(4,5-diphenyl-2-pyridin-2-yl-1H-imidazol-1-yl)-methyl]pyridine. In the X-ray crystal structure, 1 is found to contain tetrahedral zinc with an N2Cl2 coordination sphere and the N-substituent methylpyridine fragment hanging as a free arm. A tentative mechanism is proposed for the zinc mediated conversion of L-->L'. Demetallation of 1 by the action of aqueous NaOH yields L' in the free state. When L' is reacted with Zn(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O in a 1:2 molar proportion, [Zn(L')(2)](n)(ClO4)(2n).(H2O)(n/2).(CH2Cl2)(n/2) (2) is obtained. The zinc atom in 2, as revealed by X-ray crystallography, has a trigonal bipyramidal N-5 coordination sphere. There are two independent ligands in the asymmetric unit of 2. One of them bonds only to one zinc atom in a bidentate mode with the N-substituent methylpyridine hanging free while the other ligand binds to two different zinc atoms in a tridentate fashion, employing the N-substituent methylpyridine nitrogen atom to form the polymeric one-dimensional chain cation.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that the extended structure of dipeptide I Boc-beta-Ala-m-ABA-OMe (m-ABA: meta-aminobenzoic acid) self-assembles in the solid state by intermolecular hydrogen bonding to create an infinite parallel P-sheet structure. In dipeptide II Boc-gamma-Abu-m-ABA-OMe (gamma-Abu: gamma-aminobutyric acid), two such parallel beta-sheets are further cross-linked by intermolecular hydrogen bonding through m-aminobenzoic acid moieties. SEM (scanning electron microscopy) studies reveal that both the peptides I and II form amyloid-like fibrils in the solid state. The fibrils are also found to be stained readily by Congo red, a characteristic feature of the amyloid fiber whose accumulation causes several fatal diseases such as Alzheimer's, prion-protein etc.

X-ray diffraction studies show that peptides Boc-Leu-Aib-m-ABA-OMe (I) (Aib, alpha-aminoisobutyric acid; m-ABA, meta-aminobenzoic acid) and Boc-Phe-Aib-m-ABA-OMe, (II) adopt a type-II beta-turn conformation, solely stabilized by co-operative steric interactions amongst the amino acid residues. This type of U-turn without any intramolecular hydrogen bonding is generally referred to as an open turn. Although there are some examples of constrained cyclic peptides in which o-substituted benzenes have been inserted to mimic the turn region of the neurotrophin, a nerve growth factor, peptides I and II present novel two examples where m-aminobenzoic acid has been incorporated in the beta-turn of acyclic tripeptides. The result also demonstrates the first crystallographic evidence of a beta-turn structure containing an inserted m-aminobenzoic acid, which can be considered as a rigid gamma-aminobutyric acid with an all-trans extended configuration. Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that three hexapeptides with general formula Boc-Ile-Aib-Xx-Ile-Aib-Yy-OMe, where Xx and Yy are Leu in peptide I, Len and Phe in peptide II, and Phe and Leu in peptide III, respectively, adopt equivalent conformations that can be described as mixed 3(10)/alpha-helice with two 4 -> 1 and two 5 -> 1 intramolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O=C H-bonds. The peptides do not generate any helixterminating Schellman motif despite having Aib at the penultimate position from C-terminus. In the crystalline state, the helices are packed in head-to-tail fashion through intermolecular hydrogen bonds to create supramolecular helical structures. The CD Studies of the three hexapeptides in acetonitrile indicate that they are folded in well-developed 3(10)-helical structures. NMR studies of peptide I in CDCl3 also suggest the formation of a homogeneous 3 m-helical structure. The field emission scanning electron microscopic (FE-SEM) images of peptide 11 in the solid state reveal a non-twisted ribbon-like morphology, which is formed through lateral association of non-twisted filaments. Single crystal X-ray diffraction study reveals that the water soluble tetrapeptide H2N-Ile-Aib-Leu-m-ABA-CO2H, containing non-coded Aib (alpha-amino isobutyric acid) and m-ABA (meta-amino benzoic acid), crystallizes with two smallest possible diastereomeric beta-hairpin molecules in the asymmetric unit. Although in both of the molecules the chiralities at Ile(1) and Leu(3) are S, a conformational reversal in the back bone chain is observed to produce the beta-hairpins with beta-turn conformations of type II and II'. Interestingly Aib which is known to adopt helical conformation, adopts unusual semi-extended conformation with phi: -49.5(5)degrees, psi: 135.2(5)degrees in type II and phi: 50.6(6)degrees. psi: -137.0(4)degrees in type II' for occupying the i + 1 position of the beta-turns. The two hairpin molecules are further interlocked through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions between CO2- and -+NH3 groups to form dimeric supramolecular beta-hairpin aggregate in the crystal state. The CD measurement and 2D NMR study of the peptide in aqueous medium support the existence of beta-hairpin structure in water. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the incorporation of meta-amino benzoic acid in the middle of a helix forming hexapeptide sequence such as in peptide I Boc-Ile(1)-Aib(2)-Val(3)-m-ABA(4)-Ile(5)-Aib(6)-Leu(7)-OMe (Aib: alpha-amino isobutyric acid: m-ABA: meta-amino benzoic acid) breaks the helix propagation to produce a turn-linker-turn (T-L-T) foldamer in the solid state. In the crystalline state two conformational isomers of peptide I self-assemble in antiparallel fashion through intermolecular hydrogen bonds and aromatic pi-pi interactions to form a molecular duplex. The duplexes are further interconnected through intermolecular hydrogen bonds to form a layer of peptides. The layers are stacked one on top of the other through van der Waals interactions to form hydrophilic channels filled with solvent methanol. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that the beta-turn structure of tetrapeptide I, Boc-Gly-Phe-Aib-Leu-OMe (Aib: alpha-amino isobutyric acid) self-assembles to a supramolecular helix through intermolecular hydrogen bonding along the crystallographic a axis. By contrast the beta-turn structure of an isomeric tetrapeptide II, Boc-Gly-Leu-Aib-Phe-OMe self-assembles to a supramolecular beta-sheet-like structure via a two-dimensional (a, b axis) intermolecular hydrogen bonding network and pi-pi interactions. FT-IR studies of the peptides revealed that both of them form intermolecularly hydrogen bonded supramolecular structures in the solid state. Field emission scanning electron micrographs (FE-SEM) of the dried fibrous materials of the peptides show different morphologies, non-twisted filaments in case of peptide I and non-twisted filaments and ribbon-like structures in case of peptide II.

Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies and solvent dependent NMR titration reveal that the designed pepticles I and 11, Boc-Xx(1)-Aib(2)-Yy(3)-NH(CH2)(2)NH-Yy(3)-Aib(2)-Xx(1)-Boc, where Xx and Yy are lie and Leu in peptide I and Leu and Val in peptide 11, respectively, fold into a turn-linker-turn (T-L-T) conformation both in the solid state and in solution. In the crystalline state the T-L-T foldamers; of peptide I and II self-assemble to form a three-dimensional framework of channels. The insides of the channels are hydrophilic and found to contain solvent CHCl3 hydrogen bonded to exposed C=O of Aib located at the turn regions. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A novel bis(glycinato) copper(II) paradodecatungstate Na-8[{Cu(gly)(2)}(2)]-{H-2(H2W12O42)}] center dot 24H(2)O (1) has been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions. The crystal structure of 1 reveals an infinite one-dimensional chain along the [100] direction and is built from paradodecatungstate (H2W12O42)(10-) clusters joined through [Cu(gly)(2)] moieties. Parallel chains are interlinked by NaO6 octahedra to generate a two-dimensional network.

Recently the BTBP-family of solvating ligands have been studied for their ability to separate trivalent actinides from lanthanides. Five of the BTBPs were evaluated for their ability to extract nickel(II) from aqueous nitrate media into cyclohexanone. It was shown by both solvent extraction and X-ray diffraction experiments that the BTBPs are capable of forming both 1: 1 and 1:2 complexes with nickel(II). When the BTBP concentration is low the nickel distribution ratio is governed by the formation of the nickel/BTBP complex while at higher BTBP concentrations the partitioning of the nickel complex between the two phases dictates the nickel distribution ratio.

Molecular modelling studies have been carried out on two bis(calix[4]diqu(inone) ionophores, each created from two (calix[4]diquinone)arenes bridged at their bottom rims via alkyl chains (CH2)(n), 1: n = 3, 2; n = 4, in order to understand the reported selectivity of these ligands towards different sized metal ions such as Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+ in dmso solution. Conformational. analyses have been carried out which show that in the lowest energy conformations of the two macrocycles, the individual calix[4]diquinones exhibit a combination of partial cone, 1,3-alternate and cone conformations. The interactions of these alkali metals with the macrocycles have been studied in the gas phase and in a periodic box of solvent dmso by molecular mechanics and molecular dynamics calculations. Molecular mechanics calculations have been carried out on the mode of entry of the ions into the macrocycles and suggest that this is likely to occur from the side of the central cavity, rather than through the main axis of the calix[4]diquinones. There are energy barriers of ca. 19 kcal mol(-1) for this entry path in the gas phase, but in solution no energy barrier is found. Molecular dynamics simulations show that in both 1 and 2, though particularly in the latter macrocycle, one or two solvent molecules are bonded to the metal throughout the course of the simulation, often to the exclusion, of one or more of the ether oxygen atoms. By contrast the carbonyl oxygen atoms remain bonded to the metal atoms throughout with bond lengths that remain significantly less than those to the ether oxygen atoms. Free energy perturbation studies have been carried out in dmso and indicate that for 1, the selectivity follows the order Rb+ approximate to K+ > Cs+ >> Na+, which is partially in agreement with the experimental results. The energy differences are small and indeed the ratio between stability constants found for Cs+ and K+ complexes is only 0.60, showing that 1 has only a slight preference for K+. For the larger receptor 2, which is better suited to metal complexation, the binding affinity follows the pattern Cs+ >> Rb+ >> K+ >> Na+, with energy differences of 5.75, 2.61, 2.78 kcal mol(-1) which is perfectly consistent with experimental results.

New hydrophobic, tetradentate nitrogen heterocyclic reagents, 6.6'-bis-(5,6-dialkyl- 1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)2,2'-bipyridines (BTBPs) have been synthesised. These reagents form complexes with lanthanides and crystal structures with 11 different lanthanides have been determined. The majority of the structures show the lanthanide to be 10-coordinate with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)(3)] although Yb and Lu are 9-coordinate in complexes with stoichiometry [Ln(BTBP)(NO3)(2)(H2O)](NO3). In these complexes the BTBP ligands are tetradentate and planar with donor nitrogens mutually cis i.e. in the cis, cis, cis conformation. Crystal structures of two free molecules, namely C2-BTBP and CyMe4-BTBP have also been determined and show different conformations described as cis, trans, cis and trans, trans, trans respectively. A NMR titration between lanthanum nitrate and C5-BTBP showed that two different complexes are to be found in solution, namely [La(C5-BTBP)(2)](3+) and [La(C5-BTBP)(NO3)(3)]. The BTBPs dissolved in octanol were able to extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from 1 M nitric acid with large separation factors.

Polymetallic nanodimensional assemblies have been prepared via metal directed assembly of dithiocarbamate functionalized cavitand structural frameworks with late transition metals (Ni, Pd, Cu, Au, Zn, and Cd). The coordination geometry about the metal centers is shown to dictate the architecture adopted. X-ray crystallographic studies confirm that square planar coordination geometries result in "cagelike" octanuclear complexes, whereas square-based pyramidal metal geometries favor hexanuclear "molecular loop" structures. Both classes of complex are sterically and electronically complementary to the fullerenes (C-60 and C-70). The strong binding of these guests occurred via favorable interactions with the sulfur atoms of multiple dithiocarbamate moieties of the hosts. In the case of the tetrameric copper(II) complexes, the lability of the copper(II)-dithiocarbamate bond enabled the fullerene guests to be encapsulated in the electron-rich cavity of the host, over time. The examination of the binding of fullerenes has been undertaken using spectroscopic and electrochemical methods, electrospray mass spectrometry, and molecular modeling.

Several novel compounds with the non-linear optical chromophore 2-amino-5-nitropyridine (2A5NP) and Keggin polyoxoanions (alpha-isomers), having the general formula (2A5NP)(m)H-n[XM12O40]center dot xH(2)O, M = Mo, W, were synthesised. Compounds were obtained with X = P, n = 3, m = 3 and 4 and X = Si, n = m = 4 ( x = 2 - 6). Thus, for each of the anions [PMo12O40](3-) and [PW12O40](3-) two different compounds were obtained, with the same anion and organic counterpart but with a different stoichiometric ratio. These presented different charge transfer properties and thermal stability. All compounds were characterised by spectroscopic and analytical techniques. The single crystal X-ray diffraction structure of (2A5NP)(4)H-3[PMo12O40]center dot 2.5H(2)O center dot 0.5C(2)H(5)OH showed that the water solvent molecules and the organic chromophores are assembled via infinite one-dimensional chains of hydrogen bonds with formation of open channels, which accommodate [ PMo12O40] 3- and ethanol solvent molecules.
