We discuss the parametrisation of am-plitude and phase genes corre-sponding to space encoded femto-second transients in the wavelet domain. Differential evolution is used to improve the speed of con-vergence of the genetic algorithm. We discuss prospects of bio-molecular control using such methodology.

This work describes the use of a quadratic programming optimization procedure for designing asymmetric apodization windows to de-noise THz transient interferograms and compares these results to those obtained when wavelet signal processing algorithms are adopted. A systems identification technique in the wavelet domain is also proposed for the estimation of the complex insertion loss function. The proposed techniques can enhance the frequency dependent dynamic range of an experiment and should be of particular interest to the THz imaging and tomography community. Future advances in THz sources and detectors are likely to increase the signal-to-noise ratio of the recorded THz transients and high quality apodization techniques will become more important, and may set the limit on the achievable accuracy of the deduced spectrum.

When considering the relative fast processing speed and low power requirements for Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPAN) and Wireless Universal Serial Bus (USB) consumer based products, then the efficiency and cost effectiveness of these products become paramount. This paper presents an improved soft-output QPSK demapper suitable for the products above that not only exploits time diversity and guard carrier diversity, but also merges the demapping and symbol combining functions together to minimize CPU cycles, or memory access dependant upon the chosen implementation architecture. The proposed demapper is presented in the context of Multiband OFDM version of UWB (ECMA-368) as the chosen physical implementation for high-rate Wireless USB.

In rapid scan Fourier transform spectrometry, we show that the noise in the wavelet coefficients resulting from the filter bank decomposition of the complex insertion loss function is linearly related to the noise power in the sample interferogram by a noise amplification factor. By maximizing an objective function composed of the power of the wavelet coefficients divided by the noise amplification factor, optimal feature extraction in the wavelet domain is performed. The performance of a classifier based on the output of a filter bank is shown to be considerably better than that of an Euclidean distance classifier in the original spectral domain. An optimization procedure results in a further improvement of the wavelet classifier. The procedure is suitable for enhancing the contrast or classifying spectra acquired by either continuous wave or THz transient spectrometers as well as for increasing the dynamic range of THz imaging systems. We present a novel topology of the radial basis function (RBF) neural network, referred to as the boundary value constraints (BVC)-RBF, which is able to automatically satisfy a set of BVC. Unlike most existing neural networks whereby the model is identified via learning from observational data only, the proposed BVC-RBF offers a generic framework by taking into account both the deterministic prior knowledge and the stochastic data in an intelligent manner. Like a conventional RBF, the proposed BVC-RBF has a linear-in-the-parameter structure, such that it is advantageous that many of the existing algorithms for linear-in-the-parameters models are directly applicable. The BVC satisfaction properties of the proposed BVC-RBF are discussed. Finally, numerical examples based on the combined D-optimality-based orthogonal least squares algorithm are utilized to illustrate the performance of the proposed BVC-RBF for completeness.

The Boltzmann equation in presence of boundary and initial conditions, which describes the general case of carrier transport in microelectronic devices is analysed in terms of Monte Carlo theory. The classical Ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm which has been devised by merely phenomenological considerations of the initial and boundary carrier contributions is now derived in a formal way. The approach allows to suggest a set of event-biasing algorithms for statistical enhancement as an alternative of the population control technique, which is virtually the only algorithm currently used in particle simulators. The scheme of the self-consistent coupling of Boltzmann and Poisson equation is considered for the case of weighted particles. It is shown that particles survive the successive iteration steps.

An algorithm based on flux difference splitting is presented for the solution of two-dimensional, open channel flows. A transformation maps a non-rectangular, physical domain into a rectangular one. The governing equations are then the shallow water equations, including terms of slope and friction, in a generalized coordinate system. A regular mesh on a rectangular computational domain can then be employed. The resulting scheme has good jump capturing properties and the advantage of using boundary/body-fitted meshes. The scheme is applied to a problem of flow in a river whose geometry induces a region of supercritical flow.
