Alkenyl derivatives of the metals. Oxidative addition to intermediate tin(II) alkenyls; isolation, and crystal and molecular structure of n-butyltris(triphenylethenyl)tin(IV)

Reaction of tin(II) chloride with Li(CPhCPh2) at –78 °C in diethyl ether–hexane–tetrahydrofuran affords a deep red solution whose colour fades on warming, and which we believe contains the (unstable) first dialkenyltin(II) species. The latter survives long enough at low temperatures to undergo intermolecular oxidative addition, and one such adduct leads ultimately to the formation of Sn(CPhCPh2)3Bun, which has been fully characterised including a crystal and molecular structure study. The mechanism of formation of the final product has been examined and results are reported.

Unsaturated σ-hydrocarbyl transition-metal complexes. Part 4. Crystal and molecular structure of trans-chlorobis(diethylphenylphosphine)-(phenylethynyl)platinum(II) and comments on the relative trans influence of various carbon ligands

The molecular structure of trans-[PtCl(CCPh)(PEt2Ph)2] has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The crystals are monoclinic, space group P21, with a= 12.359(3), b= 13.015(3), c= 9.031(2)Å, β= 101.65(2)°, and Z= 2. The structure has been solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by full-matrix least squares to R 0.046 for 1 877 diffractometric intensity data. The crystals contain discrete molecules in which the platinum coordination is square planar. The phenylethynyl group is non-linear, with a Pt–CC angle of 163(2)°. Selected bond lengths are Pt–Cl 2.407(5) and Pt–C 1.98(2)Å. The structural trans influences of CCPh, CHCH2, and CH2SiMe3 ligands in platinum(II) complexes are compared; there is only a small dependence on hybridization at the ligating carbon atom.

Unsaturated σ-hydrocarbyl transition-metal complexes. Part 3. Crystal and molecular structure of trans-chlorobis(diethylphenylphosphine)(vinyl)platinum(II)

The molecular structure of trans-[PtCl(CHCH2)(PEt2Ph)2] has been determined by X-ray diffraction methods. The crystals are orthorhombic, space group Pbcn, with a= 10.686(2), b= 13.832(4), c= 16.129(4)Å, and Z= 4. The structure has been solved by the heavy-atom method and refined by full-matrix least squares to R 0.044 for 1 420 diffractometric intensity data. The crystals contain discrete molecules in which the platinum co-ordination is square planar. The Pt–Cl bond vector coincides with a crystallographic diad axis about which the atoms of the vinyl group are disordered. Selected bond lengths (Å) are Pt–Cl 2.398(4), Pt–P 2.295(3), and Pt–C 2.03(2). The Pt–CC angle is 127(2)°. From a survey of the available structural data it is concluded that there is little, if any, back donation from platinum to carbon in platinum–alkenyl linkages.

Organocatalytic enantioselective construction of nitrocyclohexanes containing multiple chiral centres via a cascade reaction

The stereoselective construction of complex molecules with multiple stereogenicity in a single step represents an extremely useful, but challenging approach to complexity in chemical synthesis. The development of organocatalytic cascade processes has proven useful in these studies, but reports where four or more stereocentres are created in a single step from just two achiral reagents are rare. Herein we report the development of a novel asymmetric domino Michael-Michael reaction between nitrohex-4-enoates and nitro-olefins to generate cyclohexanes of high complexity, including one with a quaternary centre, and one with five contiguous stereocentres. This methodology provides access to a range of useful nitrocyclohexane derivatives, including a novel class of a-lycorane-like structures.

Farm income, population and farmland prices: a relative information approach

This paper uses an entropy-based information approach to determine if farmland values are more closely associated with urban pressure or farm income. The basic question is: how much information on changes in farm real estate values is contained in changes in population versus changes in returns to production agriculture? Results suggest population is informative, but changes in farmland values are more strongly associated with changes in the distribution of returns. However, this relationship is not true for every region nor does it hold over time, as for some regions and time periods changes in population are more informative. Results have policy implications for both equity and efficiency.

An item response analysis of the motor and behavioral subscales of the unified Huntington's disease rating scale in huntington disease gene expansion carriers

Although the Unified Huntington's Disease Rating Scale (UHDRS) is widely used in the assessment of Huntington disease (HD), the ability of individual items to discriminate individual differences in motor or behavioral manifestations has not been extensively studied in HD gene expansion carriers without a motor-defined clinical diagnosis (ie, prodromal-HD or prHD). To elucidate the relationship between scores on individual motor and behavioral UHDRS items and total score for each subscale, a nonparametric item response analysis was performed on retrospective data from 2 multicenter longitudinal studies. Motor and behavioral assessments were supplied for 737 prHD individuals with data from 2114 visits (PREDICT-HD) and 686 HD individuals with data from 1482 visits (REGISTRY). Option characteristic curves were generated for UHDRS subscale items in relation to their subscale score. In prHD, overall severity of motor signs was low, and participants had scores of 2 or above on very few items. In HD, motor items that assessed ocular pursuit, saccade initiation, finger tapping, tandem walking, and to a lesser extent, saccade velocity, dysarthria, tongue protrusion, pronation/supination, Luria, bradykinesia, choreas, gait, and balance on the retropulsion test were found to discriminate individual differences across a broad range of motor severity. In prHD, depressed mood, anxiety, and irritable behavior demonstrated good discriminative properties. In HD, depressed mood demonstrated a good relationship with the overall behavioral score. These data suggest that at least some UHDRS items appear to have utility across a broad range of severity, although many items demonstrate problematic features.

Synchronization of digital data decoders

Burst timing synchronisation is maintained in a digital data decoder during multiple burst reception in a TDMA system. The data within a multiple burst are streamed into memory storage and data corresponding to a first burst in the series of bursts are selected on the basis of a current timing estimate derived from a synchronisation burst. Selections of data corresponding to other bursts in the series of bursts are modified in accordance with updated timing estimates derived from previously processed bursts.

A carbamazepine-indomethacin (1:1) cocrystal produced by milling

An X-ray amorphous mixture of carbamazepine and indomethacin transforms upon annealing to produce a novel 1:1 cocrystal, whose structure has been determined from laboratory powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) data.
