Reaction of iodoacetic acid with cupric carbonate in water in dimmed light yields green Cu(ICH2COO)(2 center dot)H2O (1). From X-ray crystallography, it is found to be a tetra-acetato bridged copper(II) dimer with the water molecules occupying the apical positions. In thermogravimetry, the coordinated water molecules are lost in the temperature range 50-100 degrees C. From magnetic susceptibility measurements in the temperature range 300-1.8 K, the exchange coupling constant J is found to be -142(1) cm(-1) and g = 2.18(2) with the spin Hamiltonian H = -2J{S-Cu1 center dot S-Cu2}. It reacts with 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) to yield [Cu(bpy)(2)I]I. It oxidises thiophenol to Ph-S-S-Ph under dry N-2 atmosphere.

Condensations of 2-(2-aminoethyl)pyridine with 4-methylimidazole-5-carboxaldehyde and 1-methyl-2-imidazolecarboxaldehyde generate the tridentate N donor ligands L and L' respectively. Reactions of Cu(NCS)(2) with L and L' yield respectively CuL(SCN)(NCS) (1) containing a CuN4S core and CuL'(NCS)(2) (2) having a CuN5 core. Both the cores are square pyramidal with SCN bound in 1 at the axial position through the S end. This differential behaviour of SCN in the two complexes despite the ligands being very similar, is investigated by DFT calculations at the B3LYP/TZV level. It is found that DFT calculations predict isolation of the Cu(ligand)(NCS)(2) species for both the ligands L and L'. Presence of an offsetting intermolecular H-bonding between the N atom of the thiocyanate and the N-H proton of the ligand L of an adjacent molecule makes the binding of SCN via the S end feasible in 1 resulting in the H-bonded-dimer Cu2L2(SCN)(2)(NCS)(2). The strength of the H-bond is estimated as 27.1 kJ mol (1) from the DFT calculations. The question of such H-bonding does not arise with L' as it lacks in a similar H atom. Dimeric 1 represents a case of two non-interacting spins. (C) 2008 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

The X-ray crystal structure of the 1:2 condensate (1) of hydrazine hydrate and 4-methyl-imidazole-5-carboxaldehyde has been determined. The molecule is centrosymmetric crystallising in the space group Fddd with cell dimensions: a = 10.557(14), b = 17.062(22), c = 24.759(27) angstrom. Fourier map shows that the NH hydrogen atom of each imidazole moiety has equal possibility of occupying any of its two ring N atoms. This poses the possibility of finding three tautomers in 1 in the solid state. Consideration of the H-bonding pattern observed in 1 and related B3LYP/6-311+G(2d, p) calculations show that only two tautomers are present in the solid state. The situation is compared with that in the structure of 4(5)-nitro-5(4)-methoxy-imidazole reported previously by Kubicki.

Reactions of CuF2, CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O and CuBr2 with 2,2'-dipyridylamine (HDPA) in water at room temperature using Cu: HDPA = 2: 1 mol yield [Cu(HDPA) (H2O)(2)F]F center dot 3H(2)O (1), Cu(HDPA) Cl-2 (2) and [Cu(HDPA) Br-2 (3) respectively. The structures of 2 and 3 are isostructural in spacegroup C-2 with cell dimensions; for 2, a = 14.702(8), b = 7.726(2), c = 4.829(6) angstrom, beta = 96.68(8)degrees and for 3, a = 14.2934(8), b = 7.9057(6), c = 5.1982(5) angstrom, beta = 94.049(7)degrees. In the X-ray crystal structure, the complex 1 is found to contain tapes of water pentamers. Our DFT calculations at the B3LYP/LanL2DZ level show that the reaction Cu(HDPA)X-2 + 2H(2)O = [Cu(HDPA)(H2O)(2)X]X is most exothermic in the gas phase when X- = F-, i.e., the tendency of water uptake is maximum for Cu(HDPA) F-2. It seems that the exothermicities of the aquations of Cu(HDPA) Cl-2 and Cu(HDPA) Br-2 are not sufficient to stabilise the type of ribbons of water observed in 1 and consequently water is eschewed when X- = Cl- or Br-.

Reactions of the 1:2 condensate (L) of benzil dihydrazone and 1-methyl-2-imidazole carboxaldehyde with Cd(ClO4)(2)center dot xH(2)O and CdI2 yield [CdL2]( ClO4)(2) (1) and LCdI2 (2), respectively. The yellow ligand L, and its yellow complexes 1 and 2 are characterized by NMR and single crystal X-ray diffraction. Though L contains four N-donor centers, 1 is found to be a four-coordinate double helicate with a square planar Cd(II)N-4 core and 2 a spiral coordination polymer with tetrahedral Cd(II)N2I2 moieties. The bidentate nature of L and the occurrence of the square planar coordination of Cd( II) is explained by DFT calculations. (c) 2007 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Reactions of the 1: 2 condensate (L) of benzil dihydrazone and 2-acetylpyridine with Hg(ClO4)(2) center dot xH(2)O and HgI2 yield yellow [HgL2](ClO4)(2) (1) and HgLI2 (2), respectively. Homoleptic 1 is a 8-coordinate double helical complex with a Hg(II)N-8 core crystallising in the space group Pbca with cell dimensions: a = 16.2250(3), b = 20.9563(7), c = 31.9886(11) angstrom. Complex 2 is a 4-coordinate single helical complex having a Hg(II)N2I2 core crystallising in the space group P2(1)/n with cell dimensions a = 9.8011(3), b = 17.6736(6), c = 16.7123(6) angstrom and b = 95.760(3). In complex 1, the N-donor ligand L uses all of its binding sites to act as tetradentate. On the other hand, it acts as a bidentate N-donor ligand in 2 giving rise to a dangling part. From variable temperature H-1 NMR studies both the complexes are found to be stereochemically non-rigid in solution. In the case of 2, the solution process involves wrapping up of the dangling part of L around the metal. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

X-ray crystallography shows that [Ag2L2(H2O)(2)](BF4)(2) where L is a 1:1 condensate of 1,2-diphenylethane-1,2-dione and 2-(2-aminoethyl pyridine), contains an Ag(I)-Ag(I) bond of length 2.979(2) angstrom and an angular, intraligand interaction of the keto O with the pi cloud of the pyridine moiety (O-pyridine centroid = 3.12 angstrom). Model MP2/6-311++G(d,p) calculations indicate that the observed lone pair-pi type interaction is stabilising and not merely a tolerated short contact. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

it has been established that triazinyl bipyridines (hemi-BTPs) and bis-triazinyl pyridines (BTPs), ligands which are currently being investigated as possible ligands for the separation of actinides from lanthanides in nuclear waste, are able to form homoleptic complexes with first row transition metals such as cobalt(IT), copper(II), iron(II), manganese(II), nickel(II) and zinc(II). The metal complexes exhibit six-co-ordinate octahedral structures and redox states largely analogous to those of the related terpyridine complexes. The reactivity of the different redox states of cobalt bis-hemi-BTP complex in aqueous environments has been studied with two-phase electrochemistry by immobilisation of the essentially water-insoluble metal complexes on graphite electrodes and the immersion of this modified electrode in an aqueous electrolyte. It was found that redox potentials for the metal-centred reactions were pH-independent whereas the potentials for the ligand-centred reactions were strongly pH-dependent. The reductive degradation of these complexes has been investigated by computational methods. Solvent extraction experiments have been carried out for a range of metals and these show that cobalt(II) and nickel(II) as well as palladium(II), cadmium(II) and lead(II) were all extracted with the ligands 1e and 2c with higher distribution ratios that was observed for americium(III) under the same conditions. The implications of this result for the use of these ligands to separate actinides from nuclear waste are discussed. (c) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Complexes have been synthesised with bis(2-pyridine carboxaldehyde) ethylenediimine (1) and bis(2-pyridine carboxaldehyde)propylene-1,3-diimine (2) with all of the available lanthanide trinitrates. Crystal structures were obtained for all but one complex with 1 and for all but one complex with 2. Four distinct structural types were established for 1 but only two for 2, although in all cases the structures contained one ligand bound to the metal in a tetradentate fashion. With 1, the four different structures of the lanthanide(III) nitrate complexes included 11-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)(H2O)] for Ln = La; 10 coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)(H2O)] with one monodentate and two bidentate nitrates for Ln = Ce, then 10-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)] for Ln = Pr-Yb with three bidentate nitrates; and 9-coordinate [Ln(1)(NO3)(3)] with one monodentate and two bidentate nitrates for Ln = Lu. On the other hand for 2 only two distinct types of structure are obtained, the first type with Ln = La-Pr and the second type for Ln = Sm-Lu, although all are 10-coordinate with stoichiometry [Ln(2)(NO3)(3)]. The difference between the two types is in the disposition of the ligand relative to the nitrates. With the larger lanthanides La-Pr the ligand is found on one side of the coordination sphere with the three nitrate anions on the other. In these structures, the ligand is folded such that the angle between the two pyridine rings approaches 90degrees, while with the smaller lanthanides Sm-Lu, two nitrates are found on one side of the ligand and one nitrate on the other and the ligand is in an extended conformation such that the two pyridine rings are close to being coplanar. In both series of structures, the Ln-N and Ln-O bond lengths were consistent with the lanthanide contraction though there are significant variations between ostensibly equivalent bonds which are indicative of intramolecular hydrogen bonding and steric crowding in the complexes. The ability of new hydrophobic tridentate ligands based on 2,6-bis(benziinidazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine and 2,6-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)pyridine to selectively extract americium(III) from europium(III) was measured. The most promising ligand-2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-4-(2-decyl-1-tetradecyloxy)pyridine L-9 was found to give separation factors (SFAm/Eu) of up to 70 when used to extract cations from 0.02-0.10 M HNO3 into TPH in synergy with 2-bromodecanoic acid. Six structures of lanthanide complexes with 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine L-6 were then determined to evaluate the types of species that are likely to be involved in the separation process. Three structural types were observed, namely [LnL(6)(NO3)(3)(H2O)2], 11-coordinate only for La, [LnL(6) (NO3)(3) (CH3CN)], 10-coordinate for Pr, Nd and Eu and [LnL(6) (NO3)(3)(H2O)], L 10-coordinate for Eu and Gd. Quantum Mechanics calculations were carried out on the tridentate ligands to elucidate the conformational preferences of the ligands in the free state and protonated and diprotonated forms and to assess the electronic properties of the ligands for comparison with other terdentate ligands used in lanthanide/actinide separation processes.

The extracting agent 2,6-bis(4,6-di-pivaloylamino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-pyridine (L-5) in n-octanol was found, in synergy with 2-bromodecanoic acid, to give D-Am/D-Eu separation factors (SFs) between 2.4 and 3.7 when used to extract the metal ions from 0.02-0.12 M HNO3. Slightly higher SFs (4-6) were obtained in the absence of the synergist when the ligand was used to extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from 0.98 M HNO3. In order to investigate the possible nature of the extracted species crystal structures of L-5 and the complex formed between Yb(III) with 2,6-bis(4,6-di-amino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-pyridine (L-4) were also determined. The structure of L-5 shows 3 methanol solvent molecules all of which form 2 or 3 hydrogen bonds with triazine nitrogen atoms, amide nitrogen or oxygen atoms, or pyridine nitrogen atoms. However, L-5 is relatively unstable in metal complexation reactions and loses amide groups to form the parent tetramine L-4. The crystal structure of Yb(L-4)(NO3)(3) shows ytterbium in a 9-coordinate environment being bonded to three donor atoms of the ligand and three bidentate nitrate ions. The solvent extraction properties of L-4 and L-5 are far inferior to those found for the 2,6-bis-(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-pyridines (L-1) which have SF values of ca. 140 and theoretical calculations have been made to compare the electronic properties of the ligands. The electronic charge distribution in L-4 and L-5 is similar to that found in other terdentate ligands such as terpyridine which have equally poor extraction properties and suggests that the unique properties of L-1 evolve from the presence of two adjacent nitrogen atoms in the triazine rings.

Quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) have been developed to optimise the choice of nitrogen heterocyclic molecules that can be used to separate the minor actinides such as americium(III) from europium(III) in the aqueous PUREX raffinate of nuclear waste. Experimental data on distribution coefficients and separation factors (SFs) for 47 such ligands have been obtained and show SF values ranging from 0.61 to 100. The ligands were divided into a training set of 36 molecules to develop the QSAR and a test set of 11 molecules to validate the QSAR. Over 1500 molecular descriptors were calculated for each heterocycle and the Genetic Algorithm was used to select the most appropriate for use in multiple regression equations. Equations were developed fitting the separation factors to 6-8 molecular descriptors which gave r(2) values of >0.8 for the training set and values of >0.7 for the test set, thus showing good predictive quality. The descriptors used in the equations were primarily electronic and steric. These equations can be used to predict the separation factors of nitrogen heterocycles not yet synthesised and/or tested and hence obtain the most efficient ligands for lanthanide and actinide separation.
