Three kinds of copper(II) azide complexes have been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2) . 6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (L-1); N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (L-2); and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-diethylethylenediamine (L-3), respectively, in the presence of slight excess of sodium azide. They are the monomeric Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4) (1), the end-to-end diazido-bridged Cu-2(L-2)(2)(mu-1,3-N-3)(2)(ClO4)(2) (2) and the single azido-bridged (mu-1,3-) 1D chain [Cu(L-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)](n)(ClO4)(n) (3). The crystal and molecular structures of these complexes have been solved. The variable temperature magnetic moments of type 2 and type 3 complexes were studied. Temperature dependent susceptibility for 2 was fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression which led to the parameters J = -3.43 cm(-1) and R = 1 X 10(-5). The magnetic data for 3 were fitted to Baker's expression for S = 1/2 and the parameters obtained were J = 1.6 cm(-1) and R = 3.2 x 10(-4). Crystal data are as follows. Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula, C12H13ClN6O4Cu; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 8.788(12), b = 13.045(15), c = 14.213(15) Angstrom; beta = 102.960(10)degrees; Z = 4. Cu(L-2)(mu-N-3)(ClO4): Chemical formula. C10H17ClN6O4Cu: crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 10.790(12), b = 8.568(9), c = 16.651(17) Angstrom; beta = 102.360(10)degrees; Z = 4. [Cu(L-3)(mu-N-3)](ClO4): Chemical formula, C12H21ClN6O4Cu; crystal system, monoclinic; space group, P2(1)/c; a = 12.331(14), b = 7.804(9), c = 18.64(2) Angstrom; beta = 103.405(10)degrees; Z = 4. The 1:1 condensation of N-methyl-1,3-diaminopropane and N,N-diethyl-1,2-diminoethane with 2-acetylpyridine, respectively at high dilution gives the tridentate mono-condensed Schiff bases N-methyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-propane-1,3-diamine (L-1) and N,N-diethyl-N'-(1-pyridin-2-yl-ethylidene)-ethane-1,2-diamine (L-2). The tridentate ligands were allowed to react with methanol solutions of nickel(II) thiocyanate to prepare the complexes [Ni(L-1)(SCN)(2)(OH2) (1) and [{Ni(L-2)(SCN)}(2)] (2). Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to confirm the structures of the complexes. The nickel(II) in complex 1 is bonded to three nitrogen donor atoms of the ligand L-1 in a mer orientation, together with two thiocyanates bonded through nitrogen and a water molecule, and it is the first Schiff base complex of nickel(II) containing both thiocyanate and coordinated water. The coordinated water initiates a hydrogen bonded 2D network. In complex 2, the nickel ion occupies a slightly distorted octahedral coordination sphere, being bonded to three nitrogen atoms from the ligand L-2, also in a mer orientation, and two thiocyanate anions through nitrogen. In contrast to 1, the sixth coordination site is occupied by a sulfur atom from a thiocyanate anion in an adjacent molecule, thus creating a centrosymmetric dimer. A variable temperature magnetic study of complex 2 indicates the simultaneous presence of zero-field splitting, weak intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling and intermolecular antiferromagnetic interactions between the nickel(II) centers.

The clusters [Fe3(CO)11(RCN)] (1: R = Me, C3H5, C6H5, or C6H4-2-Me) have been prepared at low temperature from [Fe3(CO)12] and RCN in the presence of Me3NO. Compounds 1 react essentially quantitatively with a wide range of two-electron donors, L, (viz.: CO, PPh3, P(OMe)3, PPh2H, PPh2Me, PF3, CyNC (Cy = cyclohexyl), P(OEt)3, SbPh3, PBu3, AsPh3, or SnR2 (R = CH(SiMe3)2)) to give [Fe3(CO)11L] (2). In some cases (2), on treatment with Me3NO and then L′ (L′ = a second two-electron donor) yields [Fe3(CO)10LL′] in high yield. The crystal and molecular structures of 1 (L = NCC6H4Me-2) have been determined by a full single crystal structure analysis, and shown to have an axial nitrile coordinated at the unique iron atom, with two CO groups bridging the other two metal atoms.

Phthalates are industrial additives widely used as plasticizers. In addition to deleterious effects on male genital development, population studies have documented correlations between phthalates exposure and impacts on reproductive tract development and on the metabolic syndrome in male adults. In this work we investigated potential mechanisms underlying the impact of DEHP on adult mouse liver in vivo. A parallel analysis of hepatic transcript and metabolic profiles from adult mice exposed to varying DEHP doses was performed. Hepatic genes modulated by DEHP are predominantly PPARalpha targets. However, the induction of prototypic cytochrome P450 genes strongly supports the activation of additional NR pathways, including Constitutive Androstane Receptor (CAR). Integration of transcriptomic and metabonomic profiles revealed a correlation between the impacts of DEHP on genes and metabolites related to heme synthesis and to the Rev-erbalpha pathway that senses endogenous heme level. We further confirmed the combined impact of DEHP on the hepatic expression of Alas1, a critical enzyme in heme synthesis and on the expression of Rev-erbalpha target genes involved in the cellular clock and in energy metabolism. This work shows that DEHP interferes with hepatic CAR and Rev-erbalpha pathways which are both involved in the control of metabolism. The identification of these new hepatic pathways targeted by DEHP could contribute to metabolic and endocrine disruption associated with phthalate exposure. Gene expression profiles performed on microdissected testis territories displayed a differential responsiveness to DEHP. Altogether, this suggests that impacts of DEHP on adult organs, including testis, could be documented and deserve further investigations.

During the reaction of di-2-pyridyl ketone (dpk) with Na(2)[PdCl(4)] in alcoholic media, the C=O fragment of dpk undergoes facile solvolysis and the transformed di-2-pyridyl ketone (dpk(ROH), R = Me or H) binds to palladium as NN-donor. When the reaction is carried out in refluxing methanol, a mono-complex of type [Pd(dpk(MeOH))Cl(2)] is obtained. A similar reaction in ethanol affords a bis-complex of type [Pd(dpk(ROH))(2)]Cl(2). Structure of both the complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In acetonitrile solution the [pd(dpk(MeOH))Cl(2)] and [pd(dpk(ROH))(2)]Cl(2) complexes show intense absorptions in the visible and ultraviolet region, origin of which has been probed through uvr calculations. These two palladium complexes are found to be efficient catalysts for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions.

Drugs that alter brain serotonin (5-HT) function can modulate the behavioral effects of cocaine, but the underlying receptor mechanisms are poorly understood. The present study examined the effects of the selective 5-HT1A receptor agonist (+/-)-8-hydroxy-2-(di-n-propylamino)tetralin (8-OH-DPAT, 0.01-0.1 mg/kg, i.v.) on cocaine self-administration in the context of a choice procedure. Five adult male cynomolgus monkeys self-administered cocaine (saline, 0.003-0.03 mg/kg per injection) under a concurrent fixed-ratio 50 schedule of food (1-g banana-flavored pellets) and cocaine presentation. Allocation of responses to the cocaine-associated lever (cocaine choice) increased in a dose-related manner from < or =20% of total responses when saline or 0.003 mg/kg per injection cocaine was the alternative to food to > or =75% when 0.03 mg/kg per injection cocaine was available. In four of five monkeys, when choice was between a low cocaine dose and food, 0.01 mg/kg 8-OH-DPAT increased injection-lever responding. At cocaine doses which occasioned > or =75% cocaine choice, 8-OH-DPAT did not alter response allocation. In the fifth monkey, 8-OH-DPAT only decreased injection-lever responding. When choice was between saline and food, 8-OH-DPAT did not reliably shift responding to the injection lever, except at doses that disrupted operant performance. These results suggest that a 5-HT1A receptor agonist can increase the reinforcing strength of a low cocaine dose relative to a concurrently available non-drug reinforcer.

The aims of the present study are to explore the willingness to pay a tax for the abolition of the use of pesticides as well as a premium price per kilo for organically grown fruit. An investigation was carried out in the region of Emilia-Romagna both by means of face to face questionnaires administered randomly in large supermarkets and via the World Wide Web. The results of econometric estimates show that consumers in this region appear to be particularly sensitive to the ban of pesticides and willing to pay higher prices for such products.
