The synthesis, lanthanide complexation and solvent extraction of An(III) and Ln(III) radiotracers from nitric acid solutions by a pre-organized, phenanthroline-derived bis-triazine ligand CyMe4-BTPhen are described. It was found that the ligand separated Am(III) and Cm(III) from the lanthanides with remarkably high efficiency, high selectivity, and faster extraction kinetics compared to its 2,2’-bipyridine counterpart CyMe4-BTBP. The origins of the ligands extraction properties were established by a combination of solvent extraction experiments, X-ray crystallography, kinetics and surface tension measurements and lanthanide NMR spectroscopy.

Four new trinuclear hetero-metallic nickel(II)-cadmium(II) complexes [(NiL)(2)Cd(NCS)(2)] (1A and 1B), [(NiL)(2)Cd(NCO)(2)] (2) and [(NiL)(2)Cd(N-3)(2)] (3) have been synthesized using [NiL] as a so-called "ligand complex" (where H2L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine) and structurally characterized. Crystal structure analyses reveal that all four complexes contain a trinuclear moiety in which two square planar [NiL] units are bonded to a central cadmium(II) ion through double phenoxido bridges. The Cd(II) is in a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment being bonded additionally to two mutually cis nitrogen atoms of terminal thiocyanate (in 1A and 1B), cyanate (in 2) and azide (in 3). Complexes 1A and 1B have the same molecular formula but crystallize in very different monoclinic unit cells and can be considered as polymorphs. On the other hand, the two isoelectronic complexes 2 and 3 are indeed isomorphous and crystallize only in one form. Their conformation is similar to that observed in 1A.

Reaction of 5,6-dihydro-5,6-epoxy-1,10-phenanthroline (L) with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O in methanol in 3:1 M proportion at room temperature yields [NiL3](ClO4)(2)center dot 2H(2)O. The X-ray crystal structure of the cation Nil(3)(2+) has been determined. Aminolysis of the three epoxide rings in NiL32+ by 4-substituted anilines in boiling water without any Lewis acid catalyst gives a family of Ni(II) complexes with octahedral NiL62+ core. In these complexes, crystal field splitting 10Dq varies from 11601 to 15798 cm(-1) in acetonitrile. The variation in 10Dq is found to be satisfactorily linear (r(2) = 0.951) with the Hammett sigma(R) parameter of the substituent on the anilino fragment. 10Dq increases with the increase in the electron donation ability of the substituent.

Four new heteroleptic mononuclear complexes, [Cu(PPh3)2L1](1) {L1 = (C9H11O2CS2), [2-(4-methoxyphenyl)ethyl]xanthate}, [Cu(PPh3)2L2] (2) [L2 = (C6H7OCS2), benzylxanthate], [Cu(PPh3)2L3] (3) [L3 = (C5H9OCS2), (cyclobutylmethyl)xanthate] and [Cu(PPh3)2L4] (4) [L4 = (NC13H13NCS2), N-benzyl-N-(4-pyridylmethyl)dithiocarbamate], have been synthesized and characterized by using microanalysis, IR, UV/Vis, 1H, 13C and 31P NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography; their photoluminescent behaviour and molecular electrical conductivity have been investigated. CuI possesses four-coordinate distorted tetrahedral geometry in all the complexes. All are weakly conducting and exhibit semiconductor behaviour in the studied 303363 K temperature range. Complex 4 shows striking luminescent behaviour emitting bluish green light at 480 nm in CH2Cl2 solution at room temperature

Three new trinuclear heterometallic nickel(II)manganese(II) complexes, [(NiL)2Mn(NCS)2] (1), [(NiL)2Mn(NCO)2] (2), and [{NiL(EtOH)}2Mn(NO2)2]center dot 2EtOH (3), have been synthesized by using [NiL] as the so-called ligand complex [where H2L = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine] and have been structurally characterized. Crystal structure analyses revealed that complexes 1 and 2 are angular trinuclear species, in which two terminal four-coordinate square planar [NiL] moieties are coordinated to a central MnII through double phenoxido bridges. The MnII is in a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment that is bonded additionally to two mutually cis nitrogen atoms of terminal thiocyanate (in 1) and cyanate (in 2). In complex 3, in addition to the double phenoxo bridge, the two terminal NiII ions are linked to the central MnII by means of a nitrite bridge (1?N:2?O) that, together with a coordinated ethanol molecule, gives rise to an octahedral environment around the NiII ions and consequently the structure becomes linear. Catecholase activity of these three complexes was examined by using 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) as the substrate. All three complexes mimic catecholase activity and the rate of catechol oxidation follows saturation kinetics with respect to the substrate and first-order kinetics with respect to the catalyst. The EPR spectra of the complexes exhibit characteristic six line spectra, which indicate the presence of high-spin octahedral MnII species in solution state. The ESI-MS positive spectrum of 1 in the presence of 3,5-DTBC has been recorded to investigate possible complexsubstrate intermediates.

New monometallic complex salts of the form X-2[M(L)(2)] [M = Ni2+, X = (CH3)(2)NH2+(1); M = Ni2+, X = (CH3)(4)N+ (2); M = Ni2+, X = (C2H5)(4)N+(3); M = Ni2+, X = (C3H7)(4)N+(4); M = Ni2+; X = (C6H13)(4)N+) (5); M = Pd2+,X = (CH3)(2)NH2+(6); M = Pd2+, X= (C2H5)(4)N+(7); M = Pd2+, X= (C3H7)(4)N+(8); M = Pd2+, X = (C6H13)(4)N+ (9); M = Pt2+, X = (CH3)(2)NH2+(10); L = p-tolylsulfonyldithiocarbimate (CH3C6H4SO2N=CS22 )] have been prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR and UV-Vis spectroscopy; 1, 3, 4 and 5 by X-ray crystallography. In 1, 3, 4 and 5, the Ni atom is four coordinate with a square planar environment being bonded to four sulfur atoms from two bidentate ligands. All the salts are weakly conducting (sigma(rt) = 10 (7) to 10 (14) Scm (1)) because of the lack of significant S center dot center dot center dot S intermolecular interactions between complex anions [M(L)(2)](2) in the solid state however, they show behavior of semiconductors in the temperature range 353-453 K. All the Pd(II) and Pt(II) salts exhibited phtotolumeniscent emissions near visible region in solution at room temperature.

This work reports the ligational behavior of the neutral bidentate chelating molecule 2-(3,5-dimethyl pyrazol-1-yl) benzothiazole towards the oxomolybdenum(V) center. Both mononuclear complexes of the type (MoOX3L)-O-V and binuclear complexes of the formula (Mo2O4X2L2)-O-V (where X = Cl, Br) are isolated in the solid state. The complexes are characterized by elemental analyses, various spectroscopic techniques (UV-Vis IR), magnetic susceptibility measurement at room temperature, and cyclic voltammetry for their redox behavior at a platinum electrode in CH3CN. The mononuclear complexes (MoOX3L)-O-V are found to be paramagnetic while the binuclear complexes Mo2O4X2L2 are diamagnetic. Crystal and molecular structure of the ligand and the dioxomolybdenum complex (MoO2Br2L)-O-VI (obtained from the complex MoOBr3L during crystallization) have been solved by single crystal X-ray diffraction technique. Relevant DFT calculations of the ligand and the complex (MoO2Br2L)-O-VI are also carried out.

Two new Fe-III complexes, [Fe2L2(mu-OMe)(2)(NCS)(2)] (1) and [Fe2L2(mu-N-3)(2)(N-3)(2)] (2), have been synthesized using a N,N,O-donor tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[(2-dimethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol}, the condensation product of salicylaldehyde and N,N-dimethyl-1,2-diaminoethane. The complexes were characterized by X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Both crystal structures are centrosymmetric dimers containing two Fe-III atoms, which are bridged in compound 1 by two methoxy anions and in compound 2 by two mu-1,1-azides. The chelating tridentate Schiff base and a terminal thiocyanato (for 1) or azido (for 2) group complete the hexacoordination of the distorted octahedral environment of each iron center. The magnetic properties of compound 1 show the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions mediated by double methoxy bridges (J = -29.45 cm(-1)). Compound 2 shows the presence of very weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions mediated by double mu-1,1-N-3 bridges (J = 1.08 cm(-1)).

During the reaction of di-2-pyridyl ketone (dpk) with Na(2)[PdCl(4)] in alcoholic media, the C=O fragment of dpk undergoes facile solvolysis and the transformed di-2-pyridyl ketone (dpk(ROH), R = Me or H) binds to palladium as NN-donor. When the reaction is carried out in refluxing methanol, a mono-complex of type [Pd(dpk(MeOH))Cl(2)] is obtained. A similar reaction in ethanol affords a bis-complex of type [Pd(dpk(ROH))(2)]Cl(2). Structure of both the complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. In acetonitrile solution the [pd(dpk(MeOH))Cl(2)] and [pd(dpk(ROH))(2)]Cl(2) complexes show intense absorptions in the visible and ultraviolet region, origin of which has been probed through uvr calculations. These two palladium complexes are found to be efficient catalysts for Suzuki cross-coupling reactions.

The synthesis and crystal structures of three nonheme di-iron(III) complexes with a tridentate N,N,O Schiff-base ligand, 2-({[2-(dimethylamino) ethyl] imino} methyl) phenol (HL), are reported. Complexes [Fe2OL2(NCO)(2)] (1a) and [Fe2OL2(SAL)(2)]center dot H2O [SAL = o-(CHO)C6H4O-] (1b) are unsupported mu-oxido-bridged dimers, and [Fe-2(OH)L-2(HCOO)(2)-(Cl)] (2) is a mu-hydroxido-bridged dimer supported by a formato bridging ligand. All complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography and spectroscopic analysis. Complex 1b has been reported previously; however, it has been reinvestigated to confirm the presence of a crucial water molecule in the solid state. Structural analyses show that in 1a the iron atoms are pentacoordinate with a bent Fe-O-Fe angle [142.7(2)degrees], whereas in 2 the metal centers are hexacoordinate with a normal Fe-OH-Fe bridging angle [137.9(2)degrees]. The Fe-O-Fe angles in complexes 1a and 1b differ significantly to those usually shown by (mu-oxido) Fe-III complexes. A theoretical study has been performed in order to rationalize this deviation. Moreover, the influence of the water molecule observed in the solid-state structure of 1b on the Fe-O-Fe angle is also analyzed theoretically.

A tetranuclear Cu(II) complex [Cu4L4(H2O)4](ClO4)4 has been synthesized using the terdentate Schiff base 2-(pyridine-2-yliminomethyl)-phenol (HL) (the condensation product of salicylaldehyde and 2-aminopyridine) and copper perchlorate. Chemical characterizations such as IR and UV/Vis of the complex have been carried out. A single-crystal diffraction study shows that the complex contains a nearly planar tetranuclear core containing four copper atoms, which occupy four equivalent five-coordinate sites with a square pyramidal environment. Magnetic measurements have been carried out over the temperature range 2–300K and with 100Oe field strengths. Analysis of magnetic susceptibility data indicates a strong antiferromagnetic (J1=−638cm−1) exchange interaction between diphenoxo-bridged Cu(II) centers and a moderate antiferromagnetic (J2=−34cm−1) interaction between N–C–N bridged Cu(II) centers. Magnetic exchange interactions (J’s) are also discussed on the basis of a computational study using DFT methodology. The spin density distribution (singlet ground state) is calculated to visualize the effect of delocalization of spin density through bridging groups.

The reduction path of the complex fac-[ReΙ(imH)(CO)3(bpy)]+ was studied in situ by UV-Vis-NIR-IR spectroelectrochemistry within an OTTLE cell. The complex undergoes 1e‒ reduction of the 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) ligand and intramolecular electron transfer resulting in the conversion of the axial imidazole (imH) ligand to 3-imidazolate (3-im–). This step is followed by two bpy-based 1e– reductions producing ultimately the five-coordinate complex [Re(CO)3(bpy)]‒ and free 3-im‒. The identity of the reduction product fac-[Re(3-im–)(CO)3(bpy)] has been proven by partial chemical deprotonation of the parent complex followed by IR spectroelectrochemistry. This is the first time when an electrochemical conversion of metal-coordinated imidazole to terminal 3-imidazolate has been observed.

Reaction of Cu(ClO(4))(2)center dot 6H(2)O with the 1:2 condensate of benzildihydrazone and 2-acetylpyridine, in methanol in equimolar ratio yields a green compound which upon recrystallisation from 1:1 CH(2)Cl(2)-C(6)H(6) mixture affords [CuL(H(2)O)](ClO(4))(2)center dot 1/2C(6)H(6). The complex crystallises in the space group P-1 with a = 8.028(11) angstrom, b = 12.316(17) angstrom, c = 18.14(3) angstrom, alpha = 97.191(10)degrees, beta = 94.657(10)degrees and gamma = 108.039(10)degrees. It is single helical with the metal having a distorted trigonal bipyramidal N(4)O coordination sphere. The acid dissociation constant of the Cu(I) complex in CH(3)CN is 3.34 +/- 0.19. The X band EPR spectrum of the compound is rhombic with g(1) = 2.43, g(2) = 2.10 g(3) = 2.02 and A(1) = 79.3 x 10(-4) cm(-1). The Cu(II/I) potential of the complex in CH(2)Cl(2) at a glassy carbon electrode is 0.43 V vs SCE. It is argued that the copper-water bond persists in the corresponding copper(I) species. Its implications on the single helix-double helix interconversion in copper helicates are discussed. DFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-311G** level shows that the binding energy of water in the single helicol live-coordinate copper(I) species [CuL(H(2)O)](+) is similar to 40 kJ mol(-1).

Four new nickel(II) complexes, [Ni2L2(NO2)2]·CH2Cl2·C2H5OH, 2H2O (1), [Ni2L2(DMF)2(m-NO2)]ClO4·DMF (2a), [Ni2L2(DMF)2(m-NO2)]ClO4 (2b) and [Ni3L¢2(m3-NO2)2(CH2Cl2)]n·1.5H2O (3) where HL = 2-[(3-amino-propylimino)-methyl]-phenol, H2L¢ = 2-({3-[(2-hydroxy-benzylidene)-amino]-propylimino}-methyl)-phenol and DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide, have been synthesized starting with the precursor complex [NiL2]·2H2O, nickel(II) perchlorate and sodium nitrite and characterized structurally and magnetically. The structural analyses reveal that in all the complexes, NiII ions possess a distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 1 is a dinuclear di-m2-phenoxo bridged species in which nitrite ion acts as chelating co-ligand. Complexes 2a and 2b also consist of dinuclear entities, but in these two compounds a cis-(m-nitrito-1kO:2kN) bridge is present in addition to the di-m2-phenoxo bridge. The molecular structures of 2a and 2b are equivalent; they differ only in that 2a contains an additional solvated DMF molecule. Complex 3 is formed by ligand rearrangement and is a one-dimensional polymer in which double phenoxo as well as m-nitrito-1kO:2kN bridged trinuclear units are linked through a very rare m3-nitrito-1kO:2kN:3kO¢ bridge. Analysis of variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data indicates that there is a global weak antiferromagnetic interaction between the nickel(II) ions in four complexes, with exchange parameters J of -5.26, -11.45, -10.66 and -5.99 cm-1 for 1, 2a, 2b and 3, respectively

The FunFOLD2 server is a new independent server that integrates our novel protein–ligand binding site and quality assessment protocols for the prediction of protein function (FN) from sequence via structure. Our guiding principles were, first, to provide a simple unified resource to make our function prediction software easily accessible to all via a simple web interface and, second, to produce integrated output for predictions that can be easily interpreted. The server provides a clean web interface so that results can be viewed on a single page and interpreted by non-experts at a glance. The output for the prediction is an image of the top predicted tertiary structure annotated to indicate putative ligand-binding site residues. The results page also includes a list of the most likely binding site residues and the types of predicted ligands and their frequencies in similar structures. The protein–ligand interactions can also be interactively visualized in 3D using the Jmol plug-in. The raw machine readable data are provided for developers, which comply with the Critical Assessment of Techniques for Protein Structure Prediction data standards for FN predictions. The FunFOLD2 webserver is freely available to all at the following web site: http://www.reading.ac.uk/bioinf/FunFOLD/FunFOLD_form_2_0.html.
