The synthesis of dithiocarbamate ligands based on a pyrrole framework is reported. These ligands self-assemble with zinc(II), nickel(II) and copper(II) to afford neutral, dinuclear metallomacrocycles and trinuclear metallocryptands. The assembled metallo compounds have been characterised by a range of techniques, including H-1 NMR, UV-vis spectroscopy, elemental analysis, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Some preliminary anion binding studies have also been conducted, using electronic spectroscopy and electrochemistry. The nickel macrocycles showed some affinity for acetate, whereas the copper cryptand showed affinity for benzoate anions. The copper cryptand also exhibited a significant electrochemical response to a range of anions.

A novel supramolecular polymer system, in which the terminal pyrenyl groups of a polyamide intercalate into the chain-folds of a polyimide via electronically-complementary pi-pi stacking, shows both enhanced mechanical properties relative to those of its individual components and facile healing characteristics as a result of the thermoreversibility of non-covalent interactions.

The complexes [Ru(1-C=C-1,10-C2B8H9)(dppe)Cp*] (3a), [Ru(1-C C-1,12-C2B10H11)(dppe)-Cp*] (3b), [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}(2){mu-1,10-(C C)(2)-1,10-C2B8H8}] (4a) and [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}(2){mu-1,12-(C C)2- 1,12-C2B10-H-10}] (4b), which form a representative series of mono- and bimetallic acetylide complexes featuring 10- and 12-vertex carboranes embedded within the dethynyl bridging ligand, have been prepared and structurally characterized. In addition, these compounds have been examined spectroscopically (UV-is-NIR, IR) in all accessible redox states. The significant separation of the two, one-electron anodic waves observed in the cyclic voltammograms of the bimetallic complexes 4a and 4b is largely independent of the nature of the electrolyte and is attributed to stabilization of the intermediate redox products [4a](+) and [4b](+) through interactions between the metal centers across a distance of ca. 12.5 angstrom. The mono-oxidized bimetallic complexes (4a](+) and [4b](+) exhibit spectroscopic properties consistent with a description of these species in terms of valence-localized (class II) mixed-valence compounds, including a unique low-energy electronic absorption band, attributed to an, IVCT-type transition that tails into the IR region. DFT calculations with model systems [4a-H](+) and [4b-H](+) featuring simplified ligand sets reproduce the observed spectroscopic data and localized electronic structures for the mixed-valence cations [4a](+) and [4b](+).

Polymetallic nanodimensional assemblies have been prepared via metal directed assembly of dithiocarbamate functionalized cavitand structural frameworks with late transition metals (Ni, Pd, Cu, Au, Zn, and Cd). The coordination geometry about the metal centers is shown to dictate the architecture adopted. X-ray crystallographic studies confirm that square planar coordination geometries result in "cagelike" octanuclear complexes, whereas square-based pyramidal metal geometries favor hexanuclear "molecular loop" structures. Both classes of complex are sterically and electronically complementary to the fullerenes (C-60 and C-70). The strong binding of these guests occurred via favorable interactions with the sulfur atoms of multiple dithiocarbamate moieties of the hosts. In the case of the tetrameric copper(II) complexes, the lability of the copper(II)-dithiocarbamate bond enabled the fullerene guests to be encapsulated in the electron-rich cavity of the host, over time. The examination of the binding of fullerenes has been undertaken using spectroscopic and electrochemical methods, electrospray mass spectrometry, and molecular modeling.

Photoinduced Fe-to-bpy charge transfer in [{Cp(dppe)Fe}-(mu-C CC N){Re(CO)(3)(bpy)}]PF6 has been observed by ps-TRIR spectroscopy, supported by UV-Vis/IR spectroelectrochemistry and DFT calculations.

A 'mapping task' was used to explore the networks available to head teachers, school coordinators and local authority staff. Beginning from an ego-centred perspective on networks, we illustrate a number of key analytic categories, including brokerage, formality, and strength and weakness of links with reference to a single UK primary school. We describe how teachers differentiate between the strength of network links and their value, which is characteristically related to their potential impact on classroom practice.

In this paper we report the observation of drifts in the responsivity of cryogenically cooled InSb detector-based infrared filter radiometers which have very strong wavelength dependence. These drifts can result in the increase or decrease of the response of the filter radiometers by over 5%. The origin of these variations was investigated and was shown to arise due to a thin film of ice formed on the multi-layer bandpass filter used to define the spectral response of the filter radiometer. The thin layer of ice interacts with the characteristics of the filter (which itself consists of a number of thin layers) and modifies the filter spectral transmission thus modifying the response of the filter radiometer of which the filter is part of. These observations are particularly relevant to space instruments which use infrared filter radiometers for earth observation. Debris from the spacecraft engines is known to accumulate on cold surfaces of instruments carried on board. The deposition of this debris on cold filters can modify the spectral response of the instruments, which use these filters to define a spectral response. A series of half-sandwich bis(phosphine) ruthenium acetylide complexes [Ru(C CAr)(L-2)Cp'] (Ar = phenyl, p-tolyl, 1-naphthyl, 9-anthryl; L2 = (PPh3)(2), Cp' = Cp; L-2 = dppe; Cp' = Cp*) have been examined using electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. One-electron oxidation of these complexes gave the corresponding radical cations [Ru(C CAr)(L2)Cp'](+). Those cations based on Ru(dppe)Cp*, or which feature a para-tolyl acetylide substituent, are more chemically robust than examples featuring the Ru(PPh3)(2)Cp moiety, permitting good quality UV-Vis-NIR and IR spectroscopic data to be obtained using spectroelectrochemical methods. On the basis of TD DFT calculations, the low energy (NIR) absorption bands in the experimental electronic spectra for most of these radical cations are assigned to transitions between the beta-HOSO and beta-LUSO, both of which have appreciable metal d and ethynyl pi character. However, the large contribution from the anthryl moiety to the frontier orbitals of [Ru(C CC14H9)(L2)CP'](+) suggests compounds containing this moiety should be described as metal-stabilised anthryl radical cations.

This paper discusses how numerical gradient estimation methods may be used in order to reduce the computational demands on a class of multidimensional clustering algorithms. The study is motivated by the recognition that several current point-density based cluster identification algorithms could benefit from a reduction of computational demand if approximate a-priori estimates of the cluster centres present in a given data set could be supplied as starting conditions for these algorithms. In this particular presentation, the algorithm shown to benefit from the technique is the Mean-Tracking (M-T) cluster algorithm, but the results obtained from the gradient estimation approach may also be applied to other clustering algorithms and their related disciplines.
