A bit-level linear CDMA detector is presented which is based on the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) principle. Owing to the interference suppression capability made possible by basing the detector on the MVDR principle and the fact that no inversion of the user correlation matrix is involved, the influence of synchronisation errors is greatly suppressed.

This paper proposes a convenient signaling scheme-orthogonal on-off BPSK (O3BPSK)-for near-far (NF) resistant detection in asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple-access (DS/CDMA) systems (uplink). The temporally adjacent bits from different users in the received signals are decoupled by using the on-off signaling, and the original data rate is maintained with no increase in transmission rate by adopting an orthogonal structure. The detector at the receiver is a one-shot linear decorrelating detector, which depends upon neither hard decision nor specific channel coding. The application of O3 strategy to the differentially encoded BPSK (D-BPSK) sequences is also presented. Finally, some computer simulations are shown to confirm the theoretical analysis.

Little has so far been reported on the performance of the near-far resistant CDMA detectors in the presence of the synchronization errors. Starting with the general mathematical model of matched filters, this paper examines the effects of three classes of synchronization errors (i.e. time-delay errors, carrier phase errors, and carrier frequency errors) on the performance (bit error rate and near-far resistance) of an emerging type of near-far resistant coherent DS/SSMA detectors, i.e. the linear decorrelating detector (LDD). For comparison, the corresponding results for the conventional detector are also presented. It is shown that the LDD can still maintain a considerable performance advantage over the conventional detector even when some synchronization errors exist. Finally, several computer simulations are carried out to verify the theoretical conclusions.

This paper presents a novel scheme for near-far resistant CDMA detection: isolation bit insertion (IBI). At the transmitter, isolation bits are inserted into the information bit sequence before modulation, and a practical linear decorrelating detector (LDD) is obtained at the receiver. All the advantages that an LDD theoretically offers are retained and realised in practice.

Linear CDMA detectors have emerged as a promising solution to multiple access interference (MAI) suppression. Unfortunately, most existing linear detectors suffer from high sensitivity to synchronisation errors (also termed parameter estimation error), and synchronisation error resistant detectors have so far not been as widely investigated as they should have. This paper extends the minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) detector, proposed previously by this author (Zheng 2000) for synchronous systems, to asynchronous systems. It has been shown that the MVDR structure is equally effective for asynchronous systems, especially for the weaker users.

Greater attention has been focused on the use of CDMA for future cellular mobile communications. CA near-far resistant detector for asynchronous code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems operating in additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels is presented. The multiuser interference caused by K users transmitting simultaneously, each with a specific signature sequence, is completely removed at the receiver. The complexity of this detector grows only linearly with the number of users, as compared to the optimum multiuser detector which requires exponential complexity in the number of users. A modified algorithm based on time diversity is described. It performs detection on a bit-by-bit basis and overcomes the complexity of using a sequence detector. The performance of this detector is shown to be superior to that of the conventional receiver.

This paper applies O3BPSK (orthogonal on-off PSK) signaling scheme to multipath fading CDMA channels, for the purpose of near-far resistant detection in the reverse link. Based on the maximum multipath spreading delay, a minimum duration of “off” is suggested, with which the temporally adjacent bits (TABs) from different users at the receiver are decoupled. As a result, a Rake-type one-shot linear decorrelating detector (LDD) is obtained. Since no knowledge of echo amplitudes is needed, a blind detection can be realised.

We consider the problem of scattering of time harmonic acoustic waves by an unbounded sound soft surface which is assumed to lie within a finite distance of some plane. The paper is concerned with the study of an equivalent variational formulation of this problem set in a scale of weighted Sobolev spaces. We prove well-posedness of this variational formulation in an energy space with weights which extends previous results in the unweighted setting [S. Chandler-Wilde and P. Monk, SIAM J. Math. Anal., 37 (2005), pp. 598–618] to more general inhomogeneous terms in the Helmholtz equation. In particular, in the two-dimensional case, our approach covers the problem of plane wave incidence, whereas in the three-dimensional case, incident spherical and cylindrical waves can be treated. As a further application of our results, we analyze a finite section type approximation, whereby the variational problem posed on an infinite layer is approximated by a variational problem on a bounded region.

Little has been reported on the performance of near-far resistant CDMA detectors in the presence of system parameter estimation errors (SPEEs). Starting with the general mathematical model of matched filters, the paper examines the effects of three classes of SPEEs, i.e., time-delay, carrier phase, and carrier frequency errors, on the performance (BER) of an emerging type of near-far resistant coherent DS/SSMA detector, i.e., the linear decorrelating detector. Water-soluble polymers are often capable of forming interpolymer complexes in solutions and at interfaces, which offers an excellent opportunity for surface modification. The complex formation may be driven by H-bonding between poly(carboxylic acids) and non-ionic polymers or by electrostatic attraction between oppositely-charged polyelectrolytes. In the present communication the following applications of interpolymer complexation in coating technologies will be considered: (1) Complexation between poly(acrylic acid) and non-ionic polymers via H-bonding was used to coat glass surfaces. It was realised using layer-by-layer deposition of IPC on glass surfaces with subsequent cross-linking of dry multilayers by thermal treatment. Depending on the glass surface functionality this complexation resulted in detachable and non-detachable hydrogel films; (2) Electrostatic layer-by-layer self-assembly between glycol chitosan and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used to coat magnetic nanoparticles. It was demonstrated that the native structure of BSA remains unaffected by the self-assembling process.

PEGylated organosilica nanoparticles have been synthesized through self-condensation of (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane in dimethyl sulfoxide into thiolated nanoparticles with their subsequent reaction with methoxypoly(ethylene glycol) maleimide. The PEGylated nanoparticles showed excellent colloidal stability over a wide range of pH in contrast to the parent thiolated nanoparticles, which have a tendency to aggregate irreversibly under acidic conditions (pH < 3.0). Due to the presence of a poly(ethylene glycol)-based corona, the PEGylated nanoparticles are capable of forming hydrogen-bonded interpolymer complexes with poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solutions under acidic conditions, resulting in larger aggregates. The use of hydrogen-bonding interactions allows more efficient attachment of the nanoparticles to surfaces. The alternating deposition of PEGylated nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) on silicon wafer surfaces in a layer-by-layer fashion leads to multilayered coatings. The self-assembly of PEGylated nanoparticles with poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solutions and at solid surfaces was compared to the behavior of linear poly(ethylene glycol). The nanoparticle system creates thicker layers than the poly(ethylene glycol), and a thicker layer is obtained on a poly(acrylic acid) surface than on a silica surface, because of the effects of hydrogen bonding. Some implications of these hydrogen-bonding-driven interactions between PEGylated nanoparticles and poly(acrylic acid) for pharmaceutical formulations are discussed.

We apply modern synchrotron-based structural techniques to the study of serine adsorbed on the pure andAumodified intrinsically chiral Cu{531} surface. XPS and NEXAFS data in combination with DFT show that on the pure surface both enantiomers adsorb in l4 geometries (with de-protonated b-OH groups) at low coverage and in l3 geometries at saturation coverage. Significantly larger enantiomeric differences are seen for the l4 geometries, which involve substrate bonds of three side groups of the chiral center, i.e. a three-point interaction. The l3 adsorption geometry, where only the carboxylate and amino groups form substrate bonds, leads to smaller but still significant enantiomeric differences, both in geometry and the decomposition behavior. When Cu{531} is modified by the deposition of 1 and 2ML Au the orientations of serine at saturation coverage are significantly different from those on the clean surface. In all cases, however, a l3 bond coordination is found at saturation involving different numbers of Au atoms, which leads to relatively small enantiomeric differences.
