Single crystal X-ray diffraction studies show that the beta-turn structure of tetrapeptide I, Boc-Gly-Phe-Aib-Leu-OMe (Aib: alpha-amino isobutyric acid) self-assembles to a supramolecular helix through intermolecular hydrogen bonding along the crystallographic a axis. By contrast the beta-turn structure of an isomeric tetrapeptide II, Boc-Gly-Leu-Aib-Phe-OMe self-assembles to a supramolecular beta-sheet-like structure via a two-dimensional (a, b axis) intermolecular hydrogen bonding network and pi-pi interactions. FT-IR studies of the peptides revealed that both of them form intermolecularly hydrogen bonded supramolecular structures in the solid state. Field emission scanning electron micrographs (FE-SEM) of the dried fibrous materials of the peptides show different morphologies, non-twisted filaments in case of peptide I and non-twisted filaments and ribbon-like structures in case of peptide II.

The title compound,{(C2H10N2)(2)[Mn(PO4)(2)]}(n), contains anionic square-twisted chains of formula [Mn(PO4)(2)](4-) constructed from corner-sharing four-membered rings of alternating MnO4 and PO4 units. The Mn and P atoms have distorted tetrahedral coordination and the Mn atom lies on a twofold axis. The linear manganese-phosphate chains are held together by hydrogen-bonding interactions involving the framework O atoms and the H atoms of the ethane-1,2-diammonium cations, which lie in the interchain spaces.

Novel 'tweezer-type' complexes that exploit the interactions between pi-electron-rich pyrenyl groups and pi-electron deficient diimide units have been designed and synthesised. The component molecules leading to complex formation were accessed readily from commercially available starting materials through short and efficient syntheses. Analysis of the resulting complexes, using the visible charge-transfer band, revealed association constants that increased sequentially from 130 to 11,000 M-1 as increasing numbers of pi-pi-stacking interactions were introduced into the systems. Computational modelling was used to analyse the structures of these complexes, revealing low-energy chain-folded conformations for both components, which readily allow close, multiple pi-pi-stacking and hydrogen bonding to be achieved. In this paper, we give details of our initial studies of these complexes and outline how their behaviour could provide a basis for designing self-healing polymer blends for use in adaptive coating systems. This paper compares and contrasts, for the first time, one- and two-component gelation systems that are direct structural analogues and draws conclusions about the molecular recognition pathways that underpin fibrillar self-assembly. The new one-component systems comprise L-lysine-based dendritic headgroups covalently connected to an aliphatic diamine spacer chain via an amide bond, One-component gelators with different generations of headgroup (from first to third generation) and different length spacer chains are reported. The self-assembly of these dendrimers in toluene was elucidated using thermal measurements, circular dichroism (CD) and NMR spectroscopies, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The observations are compared with previous results for the analogous two-component gelation system in which the dendritic headgroups are bound to the aliphatic spacer chain noncovalently via acid-amine interactions. The one-component system is inherently a more effective gelator, partly as a consequence of the additional covalent amide groups that provide a new hydrogen bonding molecular recognition pathway, whereas the two-component analogue relies solely on intermolecular hydrogen bond interactions between the chiral dendritic headgroups. Furthermore, because these amide groups are important in the assembly process for the one-component system, the chiral information preset in the dendritic headgroups is not always transcribed into the nanoscale assembly, whereas for the two-component system, fiber formation is always accompanied by chiral ordering because the molecular recognition pathway is completely dependent on hydrogen bond interactions between well-organized chiral dendritic headgroups.

It has been established that 6-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridines (R,hemi-BTPs) have properties which are intermediate between those of the terpyridines and the bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridines (BTPs). However, they resemble the terpyridines much more closely than the BTPs. It has been shown that Et, hemi-BTP when dissolved in TPH-a dodecane-like solvent-is a selective reagent for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III). Solution NMR in acetonitrile largely confirmed the crystallographic results. There was no evidence for a 1 : 3 complex cation, or for significant differences between metal(III)-N distances for the pyridine and 1,2,4-triazine rings. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a crucial role in the formation of metal coordination spheres, which explains the differences between the terpyridyl, R,hemi-BTPs and the BTPs. Protonation of the R,hemi-BTPs facilitates a conformational change which is necessary for complexation.

We have described here the self-assembling properties of the synthetic tripeptides Boc-Ala(1)-Aib(2) -Val (3)-OMe 1, BocAla(l)-Aib(2)-Ile(3)-OMe 2 and Boc-Ala(l)-Gly(2)-Val(3)-OMe 3 (Aib=alpha-arnino isobutyric acid, beta-Ala=beta-alanine) which have distorted beta-turn conformations in their respective crystals. These turn-forming tripeptides self-assemble to form supramolecular beta-sheet structures through intermolecular hydrogen bonding and other noncovalent interactions. The scanning electron micrographs of these peptides revealed that these compounds form amyloid-like fibrils, the causative factor for many neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and Prion-related encephalopathies. A one-pot reaction of [Co(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and piperazine] with NH4SCN/NaSCN in water-methanol (1:1) solvent leads to two polymorphs of [Co(SCN)(4)(ppz-H)(2)] (ppz, piperazine) (I and II). X-ray crystal structure reveals both have same space group but the differences in the alignment of pendant SCN- leads to two polymorphs. In I, trifurcated N-H...S hydrogen bonding plays a prominent role in crystal packing leading to S...S interactions between SCN fragments but in II, no such trifurcation arises and thereby the crystal packing occurs through hydrogen bonding interactions only leading to a distinctly different network topology. TG/DSC and FT-IR study reveal they are enantiotropically related. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three coordination complexes of Co(II)/Fe(II) with 4,4'-trimethylenedipyridine (bpp) and pseudohalides (SCN-, SeCN- and N-3(-)) have been synthesized. The complexes have been characterized by X-ray single crystal structure determination. They are isomorphous having 2D layers in which two independent wavy nets display parallel interwoven structures. Pseudohalide binds metal centers through N terminal and occupies the trans axial positions of the octahedral metal coordination environment. Pseudohalide remains pendant on both sides of the polymeric layer and help the stacking through hydrogen bonding. The conformation of bpp in the interpenetrated nets is observed to be dependent on the choice of pseudohalide. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Acridine derivatives can inhibit a variety of nuclear enzymes by binding or intercalating to DNA. This class of compounds is of great interest in the development of novel anticancer agents. Despite the availability of crystallographic data for some of the compounds complexed with DNA, uncertainties remain about the mechanisms of action, binding preferences and biological targets. To investigate the intercalation of several acridine derivatives, a variety of techniques are being employed. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction is being used to determine the high resolution three-dimensional structure of short sequences of quadruplex telomeric DNA with bound drug. This will be compared to the effect of drug binding to long segments of double-stranded DNA using fibre diffraction, with neutron diffraction studies planned to analyse the hydrogen bonding patterns of the DNA-drug complexes. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) will also be applied to study drug binding to both short and long sequences of quadruplex and double-stranded DNA in solution. Initial SANS measurements of the telomeric repeat d(TGGGGT) imply that this hexamer is present as a quadruplex. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A combined computational and experimental polymorph search was undertaken to establish the crystal forms of 7-fluoroisatin, a simple molecule with no reported crystal structures, to evaluate the value of crystal structure prediction studies as an aid to solid form discovery. Three polymorphs were found in a manual crystallisation screen, as well as two solvates. Form I ( P2(1)/c, Z0 1), found from the majority of solvent evaporation experiments, corresponded to the most stable form in the computational search of Z0 1 structures. Form III ( P21/ a, Z0 2) is probably a metastable form, which was only found concomitantly with form I, and has the same dimeric R2 2( 8) hydrogen bonding motif as form I and the majority of the computed low energy structures. However, the most thermodynamically stable polymorph, form II ( P1 , Z0 2), has an expanded four molecule R 4 4( 18) hydrogen bonding motif, which could not have been found within the routine computational study. The computed relative energies of the three forms are not in accord with experimental results. Thus, the experimental finding of three crystalline polymorphs of 7- fluoroisatin illustrates the many challenges for computational screening to be a tool for the experimental crystal engineer, in contrast to the results for an analogous investigation of 5- fluoroisatin.

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]center dot 2H(2)O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the Nil, as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)(2)center dot 4H(2)O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N-3)](2) (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O to yield [Ni(hap)(2)] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni-II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around Cu-II in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around Cu-II is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the Cu-II atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone. The axial site is coordinated by a water molecule. Complex 7 is a square-planar complex with the Ni atom bonded to four oxygen atoms from two hap moieties. The mononuclear units of 2 and dinuclear units of 3 are linked by strong hydrogen bonds to form a one-dimensional network. The mononuclear units of 5 and 6 are joined together to form a dimer by very strong hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecule. These dimers are further involved in hydrogen bonding with the respective counteranions to form 2-D net-like open frameworks. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).

A linear trinuclear Ni-Schiff base complex [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(PhCH2COO)(2)(EtOH)] has been synthesized by combining Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, phenyl acetic acid (C6H5CH2COOH), and the Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine (H(2)salpen). This complex is self-assembled through hydrogen bonding and C-H-g interaction in the solid state to generate a sheet-like architecture, while in organic solvent (CH2Cl2), it forms vesicles with a mean diameter of 290 nm and fused vesicles, depending upon the concentration of the solution. These vesicles act as an excellent carrier of dye molecules in CH2Cl2. The morphology of the complex has been determined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy experiments, and the encapsulation of dye has been examined by confocal microscopic image and electronic absorption spectra.

Three terminally protected tripeptides Boc-gamma-Abu-Val-Leu-OMe 1, Boc-gamma-Abu-Leu-Phe-OMe 2 and Boc-gamma-Abu-Val-Tyr-OMe 3 (gamma-Abu = gamma-aminobutyric acid) each containing an N-terminally positioned gamma-aminobutyric acid residue have been synthesized, purified and studied. FT-IR studies of all these peptides revealed that these peptides form intermolecularly hydrogen bonded supramolecular beta-sheet structures. Peptides 1, 2 and 3 adopt extended backbone beta-strand molecular structures in crystals. Crystal packing of all these peptides demonstrates that these beta-strand structures self-assemble to form intermolecularly H-bonded parallel beta-sheet structures. Peptide 3 uses a side chain tyrosyl -OH group as an additional hydrogen bonding functionality in addition to the backbone CONH groups to pack in crystals. Transmission electron microscopic studies of all peptides indicate that they self-assemble to form nanofibrillar structures of an average diameter of 65 nm. These peptide fibrils exhibit amyloid-like behavior as they bind to a physiological dye Congo red and show a characteristic green-gold birefringence under polarizing microscope.

In contrast to the corresponding hydroxyiodination reactions, the reaction of acetoxycyclohex-2-ene 1 with N-PSP in the presence of water shows little regiocontrol, but is highly diastereoselective. However, the same reaction of the (R)-phenylglycinate derivative of (+/-)-cyclohexen-3-ol is highly diastereoselective, and regioselective. A hydrogen-bonding interaction is proposed to rationalize these differing selectivities. (c) 2007 Published by Elsevier Ltd.

This paper details the synthesis, characterisation and physical analyses of a series of hydrogen bonded urethane supramolecular polymer systems that are created by a facile one-step synthesis from inexpensive and commercially available starting materials. We report the synthesis and characterisation of a series of low molecular weight bisurethanes (<650 a.m.u.) that exhibit physical properties in the bulk that are characteristic of polyurethane materials possessing far higher molecular weight. The physical characteristics of these low molecular weight bisurethanes were investigated by using temperature-dependent rheological analysis and viscometry and the nature in which these compounds assembled was assessed using IR and NMR spectroscopies. These studies reveal that these simple bisurethanes self-assemble via hydrogen bonding interactions.
