The triatomic spin-rovibronic variational code RVIB3 has been extended to include the effect of two uncoupled electrons, for both (3)Sigma(-) and (3)Pi (Renner-Teller) electronic states. The spin-orbital-rotational kinetic energy is included in the usual way, via terms (J+L+S). The phenomenological terms AL.S and lambda 2/3(3S(z)(2)) are introduced to reproduce the 3 spin-orbit and spin-spin splittings, respectively. Calculations are performed to evaluate the spin-rovibronic energy levels of CCO (X) over tilde (3) Sigma(-) and CCO (A) over tilde (3) Pi for which the Born-Oppenheimer potentials are derived from high-accuracy ab initio calculations.

The vibrational energy levels of diazocarbene (diazomethylene) in its electronic ground state, (X) over tilde (3) Sigma(-) CNN, have been predicted using the variational method. The potential energy surfaces of (X) over tilde (3) A" CNN were determined by employing ab initio single reference coupled cluster with single and double excitations (CCSD), CCSD with perturbative triple excitations [CCSD(T)], multi-reference complete active space self-consistent-field (CASSCF), and internally contracted multi-reference configuration interaction (ICMRCI) methods. The correlation-consistent polarised valence quadruple zeta (cc-pVQZ) basis set was used. Four sets of vibrational energy levels determined from the four distinct analytical potential functions have been compared with the experimental values from the laser-induced fluorescence measurements of Wurfel et al. obtained in 1992. The CCSD, CCSD(T), and CASSCF potentials have not provided satisfactory agreement with the experimental observations. In this light, the importance of both non-dynamic (static) and dynamic correlation effects in describing the ground state of CNN is emphasised. Our best theoretical fundamental frequencies at the cc-pVQZ ICMRCI level of theory, v(1) = 1230, v(2) = 394, and v(3) = 1420 cm(-1) are in excellent agreement with the experimental values of v(1) = 1235, v(2) = 396, and v(3) = 1419cm(-1) and the mean absolute deviation between the 23 calculated and experimental vibrational energy levels is only 7.4 cm(-1). It is shown that the previously suggested observation of the v(3) frequency at about 2847cm(-1) was in fact the first overtone 2v(3).

First-principles calculations of absolute line intensities and rovibrational energies of ozone (O-16(3)) are reported using potential energy and electric dipole moment functions calculated by the internally contracted MRCI approach. The rovibrational energies and eigenfunctions (up to about 8500 cm(-1) and J = 64) were obtained variationally with an exact Hamiltonian in internal valence coordinates. More than 4.8 x 10(6) electric dipole transition matrix elements were calculated for the absolute rovibrational line intensities. They are compared with the values of the HITRAN database. The purely rotational absolute line intensities in the (000) state and the rovibrational intensities for the (001)-(000) band agree to within about 0.3 to 1% for the (0 10)-(000) band to within about 3 to 4%. Excellent agreement with experiment is also achieved for low-lying overtone and combination bands. Inconsistencies are found for the (100)-(000) band overlapping with the antisymmetric stretching fundamental and also for the (002)-(000) antisymmetric stretching overtone. The generated dipole moment function can be used for predicting the absorption intensities in any of the heavier isotopomers, hot bands or the rates of spontaneous emission.

We present argon predissociation vibrational spectra of the OH-.H2O and Cl-.H2O complexes in the 1000-1900 cm(-1) energy range, far below the OH stretching region reported in previous studies. This extension allows us to explore the fundamental transitions of the intramolecular bending vibrations associated with the water molecule, as well as that of the shared proton inferred from previous assignments of overtones in the higher energy region. Although the water bending fundamental in the Cl-.H2O spectrum is in very good agreement with expectations, the OH-.H2O spectrum is quite different than anticipated, being dominated by a strong feature at 1090 cm(-1). New full-diniensionality calculations of the OH-.H2O vibrational level structure using diffusion Monte Carlo and the VSCF/CI methods indicate this band arises from excitation of the shared proton.

The complexes [Ru(1-C=C-1,10-C2B8H9)(dppe)Cp*] (3a), [Ru(1-C C-1,12-C2B10H11)(dppe)-Cp*] (3b), [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}(2){mu-1,10-(C C)(2)-1,10-C2B8H8}] (4a) and [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}(2){mu-1,12-(C C)2- 1,12-C2B10-H-10}] (4b), which form a representative series of mono- and bimetallic acetylide complexes featuring 10- and 12-vertex carboranes embedded within the dethynyl bridging ligand, have been prepared and structurally characterized. In addition, these compounds have been examined spectroscopically (UV-is-NIR, IR) in all accessible redox states. The significant separation of the two, one-electron anodic waves observed in the cyclic voltammograms of the bimetallic complexes 4a and 4b is largely independent of the nature of the electrolyte and is attributed to stabilization of the intermediate redox products [4a](+) and [4b](+) through interactions between the metal centers across a distance of ca. 12.5 angstrom. The mono-oxidized bimetallic complexes (4a](+) and [4b](+) exhibit spectroscopic properties consistent with a description of these species in terms of valence-localized (class II) mixed-valence compounds, including a unique low-energy electronic absorption band, attributed to an, IVCT-type transition that tails into the IR region. DFT calculations with model systems [4a-H](+) and [4b-H](+) featuring simplified ligand sets reproduce the observed spectroscopic data and localized electronic structures for the mixed-valence cations [4a](+) and [4b](+).

Four tridentate dibasic ONO donor hydrazone ligands derived from the condensation of benzoylhydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives (H2L1-4, general abbreviation H2L) have been used as primary ligands and 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq, a bidentate monobasic ON donor species) has been used as auxiliary ligand. The reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)21 with H2L in methanol followed by the addition of Hhq in equimolar ratio under aerobic condition afforded the mixed-ligand oxovanadium(V) complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] (1-4) in excellent yield. The X-ray structure of the compound [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(hq)] (4) indicates that the H2L4 ligand is bonded with vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its deprotonated phenolic-O, deprotonated enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The V-O bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. H-1 NMR spectra of 4 in CDCl3 solution indicates that it's solid-state structure is retained in solution. Complexes are diamagnetic and exhibit only ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition band near 530 nm in CH2Cl2 solution in addition to intra-ligand pi-pi* transition band near 335 rim and they display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. lambda(max) (for LMCT transition) and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values of the complexes are found to be linearly related with the Hammett (sigma) constants of the substituents in the aryloxy ring of the hydrazone ligands. lambda(max) and E-p(c) values show large dependence d lambda(max)/d sigma = 32.54 nm and dE(p)(c)/d sigma = 0.19 V, respectively, on the Hammett constant. The adsorption of alanine on Cu {110} was studied by a combination of near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and density functional theory (DFT). Large chemical shifts in the C 1s, N 1s, and O 1s XP spectra were found between the alanine multilayer and the chemisorbed and pseudo-(3 x 2) alaninate layers. From C, N, and O K-shell NEXAFS spectra the tilt angles of the carboxylate group (approximate to 26 degrees in plane with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] and approximate to 45 degrees out of plane) and the C-N bond angle with respect to [1 (1) over bar0] could be determined for the pseudo-(3 x 2) overlayer. Using this information three adsorption geometries could be eliminated from five p(3 x 2) structures which lead to almost identical heats of adsorption in the DFT calculations between 1.40 and 1.47 eV/molecule. Due to the small energy difference between the remaining two structures it is not unlikely that these coexist on the surface at room temperature. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A double minimum six-dimensional Potential energy surface (PES) is determined in symmetry coordinates for the most stable rhombic (D-2h) B-4 isomer in its (1)A(g) electronic ground state by fitting to energies calculated ab initio. The PES exhibits a barrier to the D-4h square structure of 255 cm(-1). The vibrational levels (J=0) are calculated variationally using an approach which involves the Watson kinetic energy operator expressed in normal coordinates. The pattern of about 65 vibrational levels up to 1600 cm-1 for all stable isotopomers is analyzed. Analogous to the inversion in ammonia-like molecules, the rhombus rearrangements lead to splittings of the vibrational levels. In B-4 it is the B-1g (D-4h mode which distorts the square molecule to its planar rhombic form. The anharmonic fundamental vibrational transitions of B-11(4) are calculated to be (splittings in parentheses): G(O) = 2352(22) cm(-1), v(1)(A(1g)) - 1136(24) cm(-1,) v(2)(B-1g)=209(144) cm(-1) v(3)(B-2g)=1198(19)cm(-1), v(4)(B-2u) = 271(24) cm(-1), and v(5) (E-u) = 1030( 166) cm(-1) (D-4h notation). Their variations in all stable isotoporners were investigated. Due to the presence of strong anharmonic resonances between the B-1g in-plane distortion and the B-2u, out-of-plane bending modes. the hiaher overtones and combination levels are difficult to assign unequivocally. In this paper, we give an overview of our studies by static and time-resolved X-ray diffraction of inverse cubic phases and phase transitions in lipids. In 1, we briefly discuss the lyotropic phase behaviour of lipids, focusing attention on non-lamellar structures, and their geometric/topological relationship to fusion processes in lipid membranes. Possible pathways for transitions between different cubic phases are also outlined. In 2, we discuss the effects of hydrostatic pressure on lipid membranes and lipid phase transitions, and describe how the parameters required to predict the pressure dependence of lipid phase transition temperatures can be conveniently measured. We review some earlier results of inverse bicontinuous cubic phases from our laboratory, showing effects such as pressure-induced formation and swelling. In 3, we describe the technique of pressure-jump synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We present results that have been obtained from the lipid system 1:2 dilauroylphosphatidylcholine/lauric acid for cubic-inverse hexagonal, cubic-cubic and lamellar-cubic transitions. The rate of transition was found to increase with the amplitude of the pressure-jump and with increasing temperature. Evidence for intermediate structures occurring transiently during the transitions was also obtained. In 4, we describe an IDL-based 'AXCESS' software package being developed in our laboratory to permit batch processing and analysis of the large X-ray datasets produced by pressure-jump synchrotron experiments. In 5, we present some recent results on the fluid lamellar-Pn3m cubic phase transition of the single-chain lipid 1-monoelaidin, which we have studied both by pressure-jump and temperature-jump X-ray diffraction. Finally, in 6, we give a few indicators of future directions of this research. We anticipate that the most useful technical advance will be the development of pressure-jump apparatus on the microsecond time-scale, which will involve the use of a stack of piezoelectric pressure actuators. The pressure-jump technique is not restricted to lipid phase transitions, but can be used to study a wide range of soft matter transitions, ranging from protein unfolding and DNA unwinding and transitions, to phase transitions in thermotropic liquid crystals, surfactants and block copolymers.

We present a kinetic model for transformations between different self-assembled lipid structures. The model shows how data on the rates of phase transitions between mesophases of different geometries can be used to provide information on the mechanisms of the transformations and the transition states involved. This can be used, for example, to gain an insight into intermediate structures in cell membrane fission or fusion. In cases where the monolayer curvature changes on going from the initial to the final mesophase, we consider the phase transition to be driven primarily by the change in the relaxed curvature with pressure or temperature, which alters the relative curvature elastic energies of the two mesophase structures. Using this model, we have analyzed previously published kinetic data on the inter-conversion of inverse bicontinuous cubic phases in the 1-monoolein-30 wt% water system. The data are for a transition between QII(G) and QII(D) phases, and our analysis indicates that the transition state more closely resembles the QII(D) than the QII(G) phase. Using estimated values for the monolayer mean curvatures of the QII(G) and QII(D) phases of -0.123 nm(-1) and -0.133 nm(-1), respectively, gives values for the monolayer mean curvature of the transition state of between -0.131 nm(-1) and -0.132 nm(-1). Furthermore, we estimate that several thousand molecules undergo the phase transition cooperatively within one "cooperative unit", equivalent to 1-2 unit cells of QII(G) or 4-10 unit cells of QII(D).

The creation of Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) offers the Consumer Electronics industry a mechanism to truly unwire consumer products, leading to portability and ease of installation as never seen before. WPAN's can offer data-rates exceeding those that are required to convey high quality broadcast video, thus users can easily connect to high quality video for multimedia presentations in education, libraries, advertising, or have a wireless connection at home. There have been many WPAN proposals, but this paper concentrates on ECMA-368 as this standard has the largest industrial and implementers' forum backing. This paper discusses the technology behind ECMA-368, the required numerical bandwidth, buffer memory requirements and implementation considerations while concentrating on supporting all the offered data-rates'.

The usefulness of motor subtypes of delirium is unclear due to inconsistency in sub-typing methods and a lack of validation with objective measures of activity. The activity of 40 patients was measured with 24 h accelerometry monitoring. Patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) delirium (n = 30) were allocated into hyperactive, hypoactive and mixed motor subtypes. Delirium subtypes differed in relation to overall amount of activity, including movement in both sagittal and transverse planes. Differences were greater in the daytime and during the early evening ‘sundowning’ period. Frequency of postural changes was the most discriminating measure examined. Clinical subtypes of delirium defined by observed motor behaviour on the ward differ in electronically measured activity levels.

This paper discusses the requirements on the numerical precision for a practical Multiband Ultra-Wideband (UWB) consumer electronic solution. To this end we first present the possibilities that UWB has to offer to the consumer electronics market and the possible range of devices. We then show the performance of a model of the UWB baseband system implemented using floating point precision. Then, by simulation we find the minimal numerical precision required to maintain floating-point performance for each of the specific data types and signals present in the UWB baseband. Finally, we present a full description of the numerical requirements for both the transmit and receive components of the UWB baseband. The numerical precision results obtained in this paper can then be used by baseband designers to implement cost effective UWB systems using System-on-Chip (SoC), FPGA and ASIC technology solutions biased toward the competitive consumer electronics market(1).
