Neoglycolipid technology is the basis of a microarray platform for assigning oligosaccharide ligands for carbohydrate-binding proteins. The strategy for generating the neoglycolipid probes by reductive amination results in ring opening of the core monosaccharides. This often limits applicability to short-chain saccharides, although the majority of recognition motifs are satisfactorily presented with neoglycolipids of longer oligosaccharides. Here, we describe neoglycolipids prepared by oxime ligation. We provide evidence from NMR studies that a significant proportion of the oxime-linked core monosaccharide is in the ring-closed form, and this form selectively interacts with a carbohydrate-binding protein. By microarray analyses we demonstrate the effective presentation with oxime-linked neoglycolipids of (1) Lewis(x) trisaccharide to antibodies to Lewisx, (2) sialyllactose analogs to the sialic acid-binding receptors, siglecs, and (3) N-glycans to a plant lectin that requires an intact N-acetylglucosamine core.

Endothelial cells (EC) express constitutively two major isofonns (Nox2 and Nox4) of the catalytic subunit of NADPH oxidase, which is a major source of endothelial reactive oxygen species. However, the individual roles of these Noxes in endothelial function remain unclear. We have investigated the role of Nox2 in nutrient deprivation-induced cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. In proliferating human dermal microvascular EC, Nox2 mRNA expression was low relative to Nox4 (Nox2:Nox4 similar to 1:13), but was upregulated 24 It after starvation and increased to 8 +/- 3.5-fold at 36 h of starvation. Accompanying the upregulation of Nox2, there was a 2.28 +/- 0.18-fold increase in O-2(-); production, a dramatic induction of p21(cip1) and p53, cell cycle arrest, and the onset of apoptosis (all p < 0.05). All these changes were inhibited significantly by in vitro deletion of Nox2 expression and in coronary microvascular EC isolated from Nox2 knockout mice. In Nox2 knockout cells, although there was a 3.8 +/- 0.5fold increase in Nox4 mRNA expression after 36 h of starvation (p < 0.01), neither production nor the p21(cip1) or p53 expression was increased significantly and only 0.46% of cells were apoptotic. In conclusion, Nox2-derived O-2(-), through the modulation of p21(cip1) and p53 expression, participates in endothelial cell cycle regulation and apoptosis. (c) 2007 Elsevier Inc. The synthetic approach to threo-2-amino-3-hydroxyesters possessing long alkyl chains outlined herein centres on the generation of chiral azomethine ylids by reaction of (5R)-5-phenyl-morpholin-2-one, (R)-(1), with long chain aldehydes. In the presence of a second equivalent of aldehyde, the azomethine ylid can be trapped to afford a cycloadduct with three new stereodefined centres. Degradation of the cycloadduct allows entry to beta-substituted-alpha-amino acid derivatives, which have potential as building blocks for sphingosine synthesis.

Neuromuscular disorders affect millions of people world-wide. Upper limb tremor is a common symptom, and due to its complex aetiology it is difficult to compensate for except, in particular cases by surgical intervention or drug therapy. Wearable devices that mechanically compensate for limb tremor could benefit a considerable number of patients, but the technology to assist suffers in this way is under-developed. In this paper we propose an innovative orthosis that can dynamically suppress pathological tremor, by applying viscous damping to the affected limb in a controlled manner. The orthosis design utilises a new actuator design based on Magneto-Rheological Fluids that efficiently deliver damping action in response to the instantaneous tremor frequency and amplitude.

A novel Swarm Intelligence method for best-fit search, Stochastic Diffusion Search, is presented capable of rapid location of the optimal solution in the search space. Population based search mechanisms employed by Swarm Intelligence methods can suffer lack of convergence resulting in ill defined stopping criteria and loss of the best solution. Conversely, as a result of its resource allocation mechanism, the solutions SDS discovers enjoy excellent stability.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been widely used in pervasive systems such as intelligent buildings. As a vital factor of product cost, energy consuming in WSN has been focused upon, but only via energy harvesting can the problem be overcome radically. This article presents a new approach to harvesting electromagnetic energy for WSN from useless radio frequency (RF) signals transmitted in WSN, with a quantitative analysis showing its feasibility.

The Learning Landscape project described here is known as RedGloo and has several objectives; among others it aims to help students to make friends, contacts and join communities based on interests and competencies. RedGloo provides a space where students can support each other with personal, academic and career development, sharing insights gained from extracurricular activities as well as their degree programmes. It has shown tendencies of becoming a learning community with several communities of practice.
