Three copper(II) complexes, [CuL1], [CuL2] and [CuL3] where L-1, L-2 and L-3 are the tetradentate di-Schiff-base ligands prepared by the condensation of acetylacetone and appropriate diamines (e.g. 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane and 1,3-diaminopropane, respectively) in 2:1 ratios, have been prepared. These complexes act as host molecules and include a guest sodium ion by coordinating through the oxygen atoms to result in corresponding new trinuclear complexes, [(CuL1)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)][CuL1], [(CuL2)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)] (2) and [(CuL3)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)] (3) when crystallized from methanol solution containing sodium perchlorate. All three complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. In all the complexes, the sodium cation has a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment being bonded to four oxygen atoms from two Schiff-base complexes of Cu(II) in addition to a perchlorate anion and a water molecule. The copper atoms are four coordinate in a square planar environment being bonded to two oxygen atoms and two nitrogen atoms of the Schiff-base ligand. The variable temperature susceptibilities for complexes 1-3 were measured over the range 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = g(1)beta HS1 + g(2)beta HS2 + J(12)S(1)S(2) + g(3)beta HS3 for complex 1 and H = g(1)beta HS1 + g2 beta HS2 +J(12)S(1)S(2) for complexes 2 and 3 has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: g(1) = g(2) = 2.07(0), J = - 1.09(1) cm(-1) for complex 1, g(1) = g(2) = 2.06(0), J = -0.55(1) cm(-1) for complex 2 and g1 = g2 = 2.07(0).J = -0.80(1) cm(-1) for 3. Electrochemical studies displayed an irreversible Cu(II)/Cu(I) one-electron reduction process. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The structures Of four alkali-metal copper (I) cyanides, KCu2(CN)(3)(H2O)-H-.-II (I), K2Cu3(CN)(5) (II), CsCu3(CN)(4) (III) and KCu3(CN)(4) (IV) are described. Three of these, ((II)-(IV)), with previously unknown ACN:CuCN ratios have new copper-cyanide frameworks, whilst (1) is a new polymorph of KCu2(CN)(3)(H2O)-H-.. These structures are discussed in terms of assembly from the simple building units Cu(CN)(2/2), Cu(CN)(3/2), Cu(CN)(2/2)(CN)(1/1) and Cu(CN)(4/2). Compounds (I), (II) and (III) are layered materials based on (6,3) nets containing (CuCN)(6) rings (I) and (CuCN)(8) rings (II) and (III). In compound (IV), (4,4) nets containing (CuCN)(12) rings link to generate a three-dimensional network. Both (III) and (IV) are examples of interpenetrating solids in which two and four identical networks interweave, respectively. These materials illustrate the structural versatility of copper (I) in cyanide frameworks. (c) 2006 Elsevier SAS. All rights reserved.

Currently microporous oxidic materials including zeolites are attracting interest as potential hydrogen storage materials. Understanding how molecular hydrogen interacts with these materials is important in the rational development of hydrogen storage materials and is also challenging theoretically. In this paper, we present an incoherent inelastic neutron scattering (INS) study of the adsorption of molecular hydrogen and hydrogen deuteride (HD) in a copper substituted ZSM5 zeolite varying the hydrogen dosage and temperature. We have demonstrated how inelastic neutron scattering can help us understand the interaction of H-2 molecules with a binding site in a particular microporous material, Cu ZSM5, and by implication of other similar materials. The H-2 molecule is bound as a single species lying parallel with the surface. As H-2 dosing increases, lateral interactions between the adsorbed H-2 molecules become apparent. With rising temperature of measurement up to 70 K (the limit of our experiments), H-2 molecules remain bound to the surface equivalent to a liquid or solid H-2 phase. The implication is that hydrogen is bound rather strongly in Cu ZSM5. Using the simple model for the anisotropic interaction to calculate the energy levels splitting, we found that the measured rotational constant of the hydrogen molecule is reduced as a consequence of adsorption by the Cu ZSM5. From the decrease in total signal intensity with increasing temperature, we were able to observe the conversion of para-hydrogen into ortho-hydrogen at paramagnetic centres and so determine the fraction of paramagnetic sites occupied by hydrogen molecules, ca. 60%. The synthesis. crystal structure and thermal study of the blue catena-(L-glutamato)-aqua copper(II) monohydrate have been reported. The compound crystallizes in P2(1)2(1)2(1) space group and consists of a polymeric three-dimensional network of copper(II) which is coordinated with the amino nitrogen and the carboxylate oxygen Of L-glutamate, the side chain carboxylate oxygen of a neighbouring L-glutamate and the oxygen of a water molecule in the equatorial position. Weak coordination of two additional glutamate oxygen atoms to both the axial positions Completes a distorted octahedron. The crystal structure shows that the lattice water is stabilized by the formation of strong H-bonding network with the coordinated water molecule. Removal and reabsorption of the water molecule have been studied by thermal analysis.

Three new basal-apical, mu(2)-1,1-azide bridged complexes, [CuL1(N-3)](2) (1), [CuL2(N-3)](2) (2) and [CuL3(N-3)]2 (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff base blocking ligands [L-1=N-(3-aminopropyl) salicylaldimine, L-2=7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one and L-3=8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one) have been synthesised and their molecular structures determined by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1, there is no inter-dimer H-bonding. However, complexes 2 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by strong H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization measurements at 2 K reveal that complexes 1 and 2 have antiferromagnetic coupling while 3 has ferromagnetic coupling which is also confirmed by EPR spectra at 4-300 K. Magnetostructural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds in complexes 2 and 3.

The synthesis, characterisation, X-ray single crystal structures and magnetic properties of three new basal-apical mu(2)-1,1-azide-bridged complexes [(CuLN3)-N-1](2) (1), [(CuLN3)-N-2](2) (2) and [(CuLN3)-N-3](2) (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff-base blocking ligands {HL1 = N-[2-(ethylamino) ethyl] salicylaldimine; HL2 = 7-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one; HL3 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one} have been reported [complex 1: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.390(2), b = 7.512(2), c = 19.822(6) Angstrom, beta = 91.45(5)degrees; complex 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.070(9), b = 9.787(12), c = 15.743(17) A, beta = 98.467(10)degrees; complex 3: monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 5.884(7), b = 16.147(18), c = 11.901(12) Angstrom, beta = 90.050(10)degrees]. The structures consist of neutral dinuclear entities resulting from the pairing of two mononuclear units through end-on azide bridges connecting an equatorial position of one copper centre to an axial position of the other, The copper ions adopt a (4+1) square-based geometry in all the complexes. In complex 2, there is no inter-dimer hydrogen-bonding. However, complexes 1 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic-susceptibility measurements and magnetisation measurements at 2 K reveal that all three complexes have antiferromagnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The factors affecting the copper-catalyzed rearrangement of ammonium ylids derived from tetrahydropyriclines and diazoesters; have been examined, and the first examples of high-yielding metal-catalyzed [2,3]-sigmatropic rearrangements of a wide range of such ylids are reported. The nature of the alpha-substituent in the diazo component of the reaction has a dramatic effect upon the yields of the reaction, with electron-withdrawing substituents enhancing the yield of the reaction.

The reaction of the redox-active ligand, Hpyramol (4-methyl-2-N-(2-pyridylmethyl)aminophenol) with K2PtCl4 yields monofunctional square-planar [Pt(pyrimol)Cl], PtL-Cl, which was structurally characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and NMR spectroscopy. This compound unexpectedly cleaves supercoiled double-stranded DNA stoichiometrically and oxidatively, in a non-specific manner without any external reductant added, under physiological conditions. Spectro-electrochemical investigations of PtL-Cl were carried out in comparison with the analogue CuL-Cl as a reference compound. The results support a phenolate oxidation, generating a phenoxyl radical responsible for the ligand-based DNA cleavage property of the title compounds. Time-dependent in vitro cytotoxicity assays were performed with both PtL-Cl and CuL-Cl in various cancer cell lines. The compound CuL-Cl overcomes cisplatin-resistance in ovarian carcinoma and mouse leukaemia cell lines, with additional activity in some other cells. The platinum analogue, PtL-Cl also inhibits cell-proliferation selectively. Additionally, cellular-uptake studies performed for both compounds in ovarian carcinoma cell lines showed that significant amounts of Pt and Cu were accumulated in the A2780 and A2780R cancer cells. The conformational and structural changes induced by PtL-Cl and CuL-Cl on calf thymus DNA and phi X174 supercoiled phage DNA at ambient conditions were followed by electrophoretic mobility assay and circular dichroism spectroscopy. The compounds induce extensive DNA degradation and unwinding, along with formation of a monoadduct at the DNA minor groove. Thus, hybrid effects of metal-centre variation, multiple DNA-binding modes and ligand-based redox activity towards cancer cell-growth inhibition have been demonstrated. Finally, reactions of PtL-Cl with DNA model bases (9-Ethylguanine and 5'-GMP) followed by NMR and MS showed slow binding at Guanine-N7 and for the double stranded self complimentary oligonucleotide d(GTCGAC)(2) in the minor groove.

Three new copper(II) complexes [(CuLN3)-N-1](2) (1), [(CuLN3)-N-2] (2) and [(CuLN3)-N-3] (3) with three very similar tridentate Schiff base ligands [HL1=6-diethylamino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-3-en1- one, HL2= 6-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-3-en-1-one and HL3= 6-amino-3-methyl1- phenyl-4-azasept-3-en-1-one] have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1 half of the molecules are basal-apical, end-on azido bridged dimers and the remaining half are square-planar monomers whereas all the molecules in complexes 2 and 3 are monomers with square-planar geometry around Cu(II). A competition between the coordinate bond and H-bond seems to be responsible for the difference in structure of the complexes.

The blue coloured complex [Cu(HL)(H2O)(ClO4)]ClO.H2O.MeOH (1.H2O.MeOH) has been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-methylpyridyl)(3,5-dimethyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)amine (HL) in methanol. The same reaction, when carried out in the presence of sodium azide, afforded a dark-blue complex of formula [Cu-2(HL)(2)(mu-1,1-N-3)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2). The crystal and molecular structures of the complexes have been solved. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data in the range of 2-300 K for 2 reveal the existence of an antiferromagnetic interaction through an end-on azido linker. Temperature-dependent susceptibility studies for 2 were fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression, which led to the parameters J = -3.2 cm(-1), g = 2.12 and R = 2.14 x 10(-4). Two mononuclear and one dinuclear copper(II) complexes, containing neutral tetradentate NSSN type ligands, of formulation [Cu-II(L-1)Cl]ClO4 (1), [Cu-II(L-2)Cl]ClO4 (2) and [Cu-2(II)(L-3)(2)Cl-2](ClO4)(2) (3) were synthesized and isolated in pure form [where L-1 = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane, L-2 = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane and L-3 = 1,4-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)butane]. All these green colored copper(II) complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The dinuclear copper(II) complex 3 changed to a colorless dinuclear copper(I) species of formula [Cu-2(1)(L-3)(2)](ClO4)(2),0.5H(2)O (4) in dimethylformamide even in the presence of air at ambient temperature, while complexes I and 2 showed no change under similar conditions. The solid-state structures of complexes 1, 2 and 4 were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the copper in complexes 1 and 2 is trigonal bipyramidal whereas the coordination environment about the copper(I) in dinuclear complex 4 is distorted tetrahedral. Two new hexa-coordinated mononuclear copper(II) complexes of two ligands L-1 and L-2 containing NSSN donor sets formulated as [Cu(L)(H2O)(2)](NO3)(2) [1a, L = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane (L-1), 1b L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridyl-methylthio)propane (L-2)] were synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods. In 1a the single crystal X-ray crystallography analysis showed a distorted octahedral geometry about copper(II) ion. The crystal packing evidences pairs of complexes arranged about a center of symmetry and connected through a H-bond occurring between aquo ligands and nitrate anions. On reaction with chloride and pseudohalides (N-3(-) and SCN-), in acetonitrile at ambient temperature. complexes 1 changed to monocationic penta-coordinated mononuclear copper(H) species formulated as [Cu(L)(Cl)]NO3 (2), [Cu(L)(N-3)]NO3 (3). and [Cu(L)(SCN)]NO3 (4). These copper(II) complexes have been isolated in pure form from the reaction mixtures and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic tools. The solid-state structure of 2a, established by X-ray crystallography, shows a trigonal bipyramidal geometry about the metal ion with a trigonality index (tau) of 0.561. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. Using the 1:2 condensate (L) of diethylenetriamine and benzaldehyde as the main ligand, binuclear copper(l) complexes [Cu2L2(4,4'-bipyridine)](CIO4)(2).0.5H(2)O (1a) and [Cu2L2(1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane)](CIO4)(2) (1b) are synthesised. The two metal ions in la are bridged by 4,4'-bipyridine and those in 1b by 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane, From the X-ray crystal structure of la, each metal ion is found to be bound to three N atoms of L and one of the two N atoms of the bridging ligand in a distorted tetrahedral fashion. The Cu(I)-N bond lengths in la lie in the range of 1.998(5)-2.229(6) Angstrom. Electrochemical studies in dichloromethane (DCM) show that the (Cu2N8)-N-I moieties in la and 1b are composed of two essentially non-interacting (CuN4)-N-I cores with Cu-II/I potential of 0.44 V vs. SCE. While la displays metal induced quenching of the inherent emission of 4,4'-bipyridine in DCM solution, 1b exhibits two weak emission bands in DCM solution at 425 and 477 nm (total quantum yield = 3.59 x 10(-5)) originating from MLCT excited states. With the help of Extended Huckel calculations it is established that the higher energy emission in 1b is from Cu(I) --> bridging-ligand charge transfer excited state and the lower energy one in 1b from Cu(I) --> L charge transfer excited state.
