The lowest allowed electronic transition of fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(bopy)(2)] (bopy = 4-benzoylpyridine) has a Re --> bopy MLCT character, as revealed by UV-vis and stationary resonance Raman spectroscopy. Accordingly, the lowest-lying, long-lived, excited state is Re --> bopy (MLCT)-M-3. Electronic depopulation of the Re(CO)(3) unit and population of a bopy pi* orbital upon excitation are evident by the upward shift of v(Cequivalent toO) vibrations and a downward shift of the ketone v(C=O) vibration, respectively, seen in picosecond time-resolved IR spectra. Moreover, reduction of a single bopy ligand in the (MLCT)-M-3 excited state is indicated by time-resolved visible and resonance Raman (TR3) spectra that show features typical of bopy(.-). In contrast, the lowest allowed electronic transition and lowest-lying excited state of a new complex fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been identified as Re --> bpy MLCT with no involvement of the bopy ligand, despite the fact that the first reduction of this complex is bopy-localized, as was proven spectroelectrochemically. This is a rare case in which the localizations of the lowest MLCT excitation and the first reduction are different. (MLCT)-M-3 excited states of both fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(bopy)(2)] and fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](+) are initially formed vibrationally hot. Their relaxation is manifested by picosecond dynamic shifts of v(Cequivalent toO) IR bands. The X-ray structure of fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](PF6CH3CN)-C-. has been determined.

The complex [(C(NH2)3)3ZrOH(CO3)3·H2O]2 (A) has been shown by means of a single crystal X-ray diffraction study to contain [C(NH2)3]+ cations and dimeric anions of formulation [(ZrOH(CO3)3)2]6−. The anion is centrosymmetric with each metal being bonded to two bridging OH groups and three chelating CO2−3 ions. The Zr atoms are thus eight coordinate with a dodecahedral environments. The ZrO distances formed by the bridgng OH groups are shorter than those formed through zirconiu carbonate interactions. The non-bonded Zr…Zr distance is 3.47(2) Å. An infrared spectroscopic investigation of A provides data which support the findings of the crystallographic study. Likewise the complex Na6(ZrOH(CO2O4)3)2·7H2O (B) contains the anion [(ZrOH(C2O4)3)2]6−. This anion is structurally related to the anion in A as each Zr atom has an eight-coordinate dodecahedral environment being bonded to two bridging OH groups and three chelating oxalate ligands, but has no imposed crysallographic symmetry. The Zr…Zr non-bonded distance is 3.50(1) Å. The OZrO bridge angles are 69.7(4)° and A and 67.4(3)° in B.

The addition of the atropisomeric racemic sulfur compound 4,4′-biphenanthrene-3,3′-dithiol (H2 biphes) to a dichloromethane solution of [{M(μ-OMe)(cod)}2] (M = Rh, Ir, cod = cycloocta-1,5-diene) afforded the dithiolate-bridged complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n] (n = 2 5 or n = 1 6) and [{Ir2(μ-biphes)(cod)2}n]·nCH2Cl27. When 1,1′-binaphthalene-2,2′-dithiol (H2 binas) reacted with [{Ir(μ-OMe)(cod)}2], complex [Ir2(μ-binas)(cod)2] 8 was obtained. Complexes 5 and 6 reacted with carbon monoxide to give the dinuclear tetracarbonyl complex [Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)4] 9. The reaction of 9 with PR3 provided the mixed-ligand complexes [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)2(PR3)2}2] · xCH2Cl2 (R = Ph, x = 2 10, C6H11, x = 1 11) and [{Rh2(μ-biphes)(CO)3(PR3)}2] · CH2Cl212 (R = OC6H4But-o). The crystal structure of 6 was determined by X-ray diffraction. Reaction of the dithioether ligand Me2biphes with [Rh(cod)2]ClO4 in CH2Cl2 solution afforded the cationic complex [Rh(cod)(Me2biphes)]ClO4 · CH2Cl213. Asymmetric hydroformylation of styrene was performed using the complexes described. The extent of aldehyde conversion ranges from 53 to 100%, with selectivities towards branched aldehydes in the range 51 to 96%. The enantioselectivities were quite low and did not exceed 20%.

Molybdenum(II) complexes [MOX(CO)(2)(eta(3)-allyl)(CH3CN)(2)] (X = Cl or Br) were encapsulated in an aluminium-pillared natural clay or a porous clay heterostructure and allowed to react with bidentate diimine ligands. All the materials obtained were characterised by several solid-state techniques. Powder XRD, and Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR were used to investigate the integrity of the pillared clay during the modification treatments. C-13 CP MAS NMR, FTIR, elemental analyses and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption showed that the immobilisation of the precursor complexes was successful as well as the in situ ligand-substitution reaction. The new complex [MoBr(CO)(2)(eta(3)-allyl)(2-aminodipyridyl)] was characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and spectroscopic techniques, and NMR studies were used to investigate its fluxional behaviour in solution. The prepared materials are active for the oxidation of cis-cyclooctene using tert-butyl hydroperoxide as oxidant, though the activity of the isolated complexes is higher. Reaction of 1-(2'-pyridylazo)-2 -naphthol (Hpan) with [Ru(dmso)(4)Cl-2] (dmso=dimethylsulfoxide), [Ru(trpy)Cl-3] (trpy=2,2',2 ''-terpyridine), [Ru(bpy)Cl-3] (bpy=2,2'-bipyridine) and [Ru(PPh3)(3)Cl-2] in refluxing ethanol in the presence of a base (NEt3) affords, respectively, the [Ru(pan)(2)], [Ru(trpy)(pan)](+) (isolated as perchlorate salt), [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] and [Ru(PPh3)(2)(pan)Cl] complexes. Structures of these four complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. in each of these complexes, the pan ligand is coordinated to the metal center as a monoanionic tridentate N,N,O-donor. Reaction of the [Ru(bpy)(pan)Cl] complex with pyridine (py) and 4-picoline (pic) in the presence of silver ion has yielded the [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)](+) and [Ru(bpy)(pan)(pic)](+) complexes (isolated as perchlorate salts), respectively. All the complexes are diamagnetic (low-spin d(6), S = 0) and show characteristic H-1 NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. Cyclic voltammetry on all the complexes shows a Ru(II)-Ru(III) oxidation on the positive side of SCE. Except in the [Ru(pan)(2)] complex, a second oxidative response has been observed in the other five complexes. Reductions of the coordinated ligands have also been observed on the negative side of SCE. The [Ru(trpy)(pan)]ClO4, [Ru(bpy)(pan)(py)]ClO4 and [Ru(bpy) (pan)(pic)]ClO4 complexes have been observed to bind to DNA, but they have not been able to cleave super-coiled DNA on UV irradiation. Three new polynuclear copper(II) complexes of 2-picolinic acid (Hpic), {[Cu-2(pic)(3)(H2O)]ClO4}(n) (1), {[Cu-2(pic)(3)(H2O)]BF4}(n) (2), and [Cu-2(pic)3(H2O)(2)(NO3)](n) (3), have been synthesized by reaction of the "metalloligand" [Cu-(pic)(2)] with the corresponding copper(II) salts. The compounds are characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and variable-temperature magnetic measurements. Compounds 1 and 2 are isomorphous and crystallize in the triclinic system with space group P (1) over bar, while 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic system with space group P2(1)/n. The structural analyses reveal that complexes 1 and 2 are constructed by "fish backbone" chains through syn-anti (equatorial-equatorial) carboxylate bridges, which are linked to one another by syn-anti (equatorial-axial) carboxylate bridges, giving rise to a rectangular grid-like two-dimensional net. Complex 3 is formed by alternating chains of syn-anti carboxylate-bridged copper(II) atoms, which are linked together by strong H bonds involving coordinated nitrate ions and water molecules and uncoordinated oxygen atoms from carboxylate groups. The different coordination ability of the anions along with their involvement in the H-bonding network seems to be responsible for the difference in the final polymeric structures. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurement shows the presence of weak ferromagnetic coupling for all three complexes that have been fitted with a fish backbone model developed for 1 and 2 (J = 1.74 and 0.99 cm(-1); J' = 0.19 and 0.25 cm(-1), respectively) and an alternating chain model for 3 (J = 1.19 cm(-1) and J' = 1.19 cm(-1)).

Conjugate addition of lithium dibenzylamide to tert-butyl (+/-)-3-methylcyclopentene-1-carboxylate occurs with high levels of stereocontrol, with preferential addition of lithium dibenzylamide to the face of the cyclic alpha,beta-unsaturated acceptor anti- to the 3-methyl substituent. High levels of enantiorecognition are observed between tert-butyl (+/-)-3-methylcyclopentene-1-carboxylate and an excess of lithium (+/-)-N-benzyl-N-alpha-methylbenzylamide (10 eq.) (E > 140) in their mutual kinetic resolution, while the kinetic resolution of tert-butyl (+/-)-3-methylcyclopentene-1-carboxylate with lithium (S)-N-benzyl-N-alpha-methylbenzylamide proceeds to give, at 51% conversion, tert-butyl (1R, 2S, 3R,alphaS)-3-methyl-2-N-benzyl-N-alpha-methylbenzylaminocyclopentane-1-c arboxylate consistent with E > 130, and in 39% yield and 99 +/- 0.5% de after purification. Subsequent deprotection by hydrogenolysis and ester hydrolysis gives (1R, 2S, 3R)-3-methylcispentacin in > 98% de and 98 +/- 1% ee. Selective epimerisation of tert-butyl (1R, 2S, 3R, alphaS)-3-methyl-2-N- benzyl-N-alpha-methylbenzylaminocyclopentane-1-carboxylate by treatment with (KOBu)-Bu-t in (BuOH)-Bu-t gives tert-butyl (1S, 2S, 3R, alphaS)-3-methyl-2-N-benzyl-N-alpha-methylbenzylaminocyclopentane-1-carb oxylate in quantitative yield and in > 98% de, with subsequent deprotection by hydrogenolysis and ester hydrolysis giving (1S, 2S, 3R)-3-methyltranspentacin hydrochloride in > 98% de and 97 +/- 1% ee.

Yellow (CuCN)(2)[(CuCN)(2)(mu-4,4'-bpy)], formed in the hydrothermal reaction of CuCN with 4,4'-bipyridine at 453 K, contains two types of infinite CuCN chains. One set of CuCN chains is linked by 4,4'-bpy ligands to form almost flat sheets of composition [(CuCN)(2)(mu-4,4'-bpy)]. Holes in these sheets are aligned to allow pairs of approximately linear, infinite -(CuCN)- chains to thread through them. The closest interatomic approach between copper atoms in the threading chains and host sheets (similar to2.74 Angstrom) does not appear to represent a significant covalent bond as it leads to only a small distortion of the -(CuCN)- chains from linearity The relationship of this material to the previously determined structures of the host [(CuCN)(2)(mu-4,4'-bpy)] sheets and (CuCN)(3)[(CuCN)(2)(mu-4,4'-bPY)](2), in which these sheets are threaded by single -(CuCN)- chains, is discussed.

It has been established that 6-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2'-bipyridines (R,hemi-BTPs) have properties which are intermediate between those of the terpyridines and the bis(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)pyridines (BTPs). However, they resemble the terpyridines much more closely than the BTPs. It has been shown that Et, hemi-BTP when dissolved in TPH-a dodecane-like solvent-is a selective reagent for the separation of americium(III) from europium(III). Solution NMR in acetonitrile largely confirmed the crystallographic results. There was no evidence for a 1 : 3 complex cation, or for significant differences between metal(III)-N distances for the pyridine and 1,2,4-triazine rings. Intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a crucial role in the formation of metal coordination spheres, which explains the differences between the terpyridyl, R,hemi-BTPs and the BTPs. Protonation of the R,hemi-BTPs facilitates a conformational change which is necessary for complexation.

Four trinuclear Cu(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](NO3)(2) (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2)center dot H2O (2), [(CuL3)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2) (3) and [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)][(CuI3)-I-1] (4), where HL1 (8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one), HL2 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one] and HL3 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2- one] are the three tridentate Schiff bases, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. All four complexes contain a partial cubane core, [(CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](2+) in which the three [CuL] subunits are interconnected through two types of oxygen bridges afforded by the oxygen atoms of the ligands and the central OH- group. The copper(II) ions are in a distorted square-pyramidal environment. The equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen of the central OH- group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from the Schiff base. The oxygen atom of the Schiff base also coordinates to the axial position of Cu(II) of another subunit to form the cyclic trimer. Magnetic susceptibilities have been determined for these complexes over the temperature range of 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = -J(12)S(1)S(2) - J(13)S(1)S(3) - J(23)S(2)S(3) has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: J = - 54.98 cm(-1) g = 2.24 for 1; J = - 56.66 cm(-1), g = 2.19 for 2; J = -44.39 cm(-1), g = 2.16 for 3; J = - 89.92 cm(-1), g = 2.25 for 4. The EPR data at low temperature indicate that the phenomenon of spin frustration occurs for complexes 1-3. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A linear trinuclear Ni-Schiff base complex [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(PhCH2COO)(2)(EtOH)] has been synthesized by combining Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O, phenyl acetic acid (C6H5CH2COOH), and the Schiff base ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine (H(2)salpen). This complex is self-assembled through hydrogen bonding and C-H-g interaction in the solid state to generate a sheet-like architecture, while in organic solvent (CH2Cl2), it forms vesicles with a mean diameter of 290 nm and fused vesicles, depending upon the concentration of the solution. These vesicles act as an excellent carrier of dye molecules in CH2Cl2. The morphology of the complex has been determined by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy experiments, and the encapsulation of dye has been examined by confocal microscopic image and electronic absorption spectra.

Four new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](CIO4)(2) (2), [(CuL3)(3)-(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(4)center dot H2O (3), and [(CuL4)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (4), where HL1 = 8-amino-4,7,7-trimethyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL3 = 7(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL4 = 4-methyl-7-(methylamino)-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, have been derived from the four tridentate Schiff bases (HL1, HL2, HL3, and HL4) and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. For all compounds, the cationic part is trinuclear with a CU3OH core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The copper atoms are five-coordinate with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry; the equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen atom of the central OH group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from one ligand whereas an oxygen atom of a second ligand occupies the axial position. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2+S2S3+S1S3) yielding as best-fit parameters: J = -66.7 and g = 2.19 for 1, J = -36.6 and g = 2.20 for 2, J = -24.5 and g = 2.20 for 3, and J = -14.9 and g = 2.05 for 4. EPR spectra at low temperature show the existence of spin frustration in complexes 3 and 4, but it has not been possible to carry out calculations of the antisymmetric exchange parameter, G, from magnetic data. In frozen methanolic solution, at 4 K, hyperfine splitting in all complexes and spin frustration in complex 4 seem to be confirmed. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. In this article we present for the first time accurate density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent (TD) DFT data for a series of electronically unsaturated five-coordinate complexes [Mn(CO)(3)(L-2)](-), where L-2 stands for a chelating strong pi-donor ligand represented by catecholate, dithiolate, amidothiolate, reduced alpha-diimine (1,4-dialkyl-1,4-diazabutadiene (R-DAB), 2,2'-bipyridine) and reduced 2,2'-biphosphinine types. The single-crystal X-ray structure of the unusual compound [Na(BPY)][Mn(CO)(3)(BPY)]center dot Et2O and the electronic absorption spectrum of the anion [Mn(CO)(3)(BPY)](-) are new in the literature. The nature of the bidentate ligand determines the bonding in the complexes, which varies between two limiting forms: from completely pi-delocalized diamagnetic {(CO)(3)Mn-L-2}(-) for L-2 = alpha-diimine or biphosphinine, to largely valence-trapped {(CO)(3)Mn-1-L-2(2-)}(-) for L-2(2-) = catecholate, where the formal oxidation states of Mn and L-2 can be assigned. The variable degree of the pi-delocalization in the Mn(L-2) chelate ring is indicated by experimental resonance Raman spectra of [Mn(CO)(3)(L-2)](-) (L-2=3,5-di-tBu-catecholate and iPr-DAB), where accurate assignments of the diagnostically important Raman bands have been aided by vibrational analysis. The L-2 = catecholate type of complexes is known to react with Lewis bases (CO substitution, formation of six-coordinate adducts) while the strongly pi-delocalized complexes are inert. The five-coordinate complexes adopt usually a distorted square pyramidal geometry in the solid state, even though transitions to a trigonal bipyramid are also not rare. The experimental structural data and the corresponding DFT-computed values of bond lengths and angles are in a very good agreement. TD-DFT calculations of electronic absorption spectra of the studied Mn complexes and the strongly pi-delocalized reference compound [Fe(CO)(3)(Me-DAB)] have reproduced qualitatively well the experimental spectra. Analyses of the computed electronic transitions in the visible spectroscopic region show that the lowest-energy absorption band always contains a dominant (in some cases almost exclusive) contribution from a pi(HOMO) -> pi*(LUMO) transition within the MnL2 metallacycle. The character of this optical excitation depends strongly on the composition of the frontier orbitals, varying from a partial L-2 -> Mn charge transfer (LMCT) through a fully delocalized pi(MnL2) -> pi*(MnL2) situation to a mixed (CO)Mn -> L-2 charge transfer (LLCT/MLCT). The latter character is most apparent in the case of the reference complex [Fe(CO)(3)(Me-DAB)]. The higher-lying, usually strongly mixed electronic transitions in the visible absorption region originate in the three lower-lying occupied orbitals, HOMO - 1 to HOMO - 3, with significant metal-d contributions. Assignment of these optical excitations to electronic transitions of a specific type is difficult. A partial LLCT/MLCT character is encountered most frequently. The electronic absorption spectra become more complex when the chelating ligand L-2, such as 2,2'-bipyridine, features two or more closely spaced low-lying empty pi* orbitals.

In the search for a versatile building block that allows the preparation of heteroditopic tpy-pincer bridging ligands, the synthon 14'-[C6H3(CH2Br)(2)-3,5]-2,2':6',2 ''-terpyridine was synthesized. Facile introduction of diphenylphosphanyl groups in this synthon gave the ligand 14'-[C6H3(CH2PPh2)2-3,5]-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine) ([tpyPC(H)Pj). The asymmetric mononuclear complex [Fe(tpy){tpyPC(H)P}](PF6)(2), prepared by selective coordination of [Fe(tpy)Cl-3] to the tpy moiety of [tpyPC(H)P], was used for the synthesis of the heterodimetallic complex [Fe(tpy)(tpyPCP)Ru(tpy)](PFC,)3, which applies the "complex as ligand" approach. Coordination of the ruthenium centre at the PC(H)P-pincer moiety of [Fe(tpy){tpyPC(H)P}](PF6)(2) has been achieved by applying a transcyclometallation procedure. The ground-state electronic properties of both complexes, investigated by cyclic and square-wave voltammetries and UV/Vis spectroscopy, are discussed and compared with those of [Fe(tPY)(2)](PF6)(2) and [Ru(PCP)(tpy)]Cl, which represent the mononuclear components of the heterodinuclear species. An in situ UV/Vis spectroelectrochemical study was performed in order to localize the oxidation and reduction steps and to gain information about the Fe-II-Ru-II communication in the heterodimetallic system [Fe(tpy)(tpyPCP)Ru(tpy)](PF6)(3) mediated by the bridging ligand [tpyPCP]. Both the voltammetric and spectroelectrochemical results point to only very limited electronic interaction between the metal centres in the ground state.

The syntheses and spectroscopic characterization of two 1,2,4-triazole-based oxovanadium(V) complexes are reported: 1(-)[VO(2)L1](-) and 2 [(VOL2)(2)(OMe)(2)] (where H(2)L1 = 3-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-5-(pyridin-2"-yl)-H-1-1,2,4-triazole, H3L2 = bis-3,5-(2'-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole). The ligand environment (N,N,O vs O,N,O) is found to have a profound influence on the properties and reactivity of the complexes formed. The presence of the triazolato ligand allows for pH tuning of the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties, as well as the interaction and stability of the complexes in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The vanadium(IV) oxidation states were generated electrochemically and characterized by UV-vis and EPR spectroscopies, For 2, under acidic conditions, rapid exchange of the methoxide ligands with solvent [in particular, in the vanadium(IV) redox state] was observed.
