Three new mononuclear complexes of nitrogen-sulfur donor sets, formulated as (Fe-II(L)Cl-2] (1), [Co-II(L)Cl-2] (2) and [Ni-II(L)Cl-2] (3) where L = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane, were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All the complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The solid state structures of complexes I and 3 have been established by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural analysis evidences isomorphous crystals with the metal ion in a distorted octahedral geometry that comprises NSSN ligand donors with trans located pyridine rings and chlorides in cis positions. In dimethylformamide solution, the complexes were found to exhibit Fe-II/Fe-III, co(II)/co(III) and Ni-II/Ni-III quasi-reversible redox couples in cyclic voltammograms with E-1/2 values (versus Ag/AgCl at 298 K) of +0.295, +0.795 and +0.745 V for 1, 2 and 3, respectively. The lowest allowed electronic transition of fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(bopy)(2)] (bopy = 4-benzoylpyridine) has a Re --> bopy MLCT character, as revealed by UV-vis and stationary resonance Raman spectroscopy. Accordingly, the lowest-lying, long-lived, excited state is Re --> bopy (MLCT)-M-3. Electronic depopulation of the Re(CO)(3) unit and population of a bopy pi* orbital upon excitation are evident by the upward shift of v(Cequivalent toO) vibrations and a downward shift of the ketone v(C=O) vibration, respectively, seen in picosecond time-resolved IR spectra. Moreover, reduction of a single bopy ligand in the (MLCT)-M-3 excited state is indicated by time-resolved visible and resonance Raman (TR3) spectra that show features typical of bopy(.-). In contrast, the lowest allowed electronic transition and lowest-lying excited state of a new complex fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](+) (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) have been identified as Re --> bpy MLCT with no involvement of the bopy ligand, despite the fact that the first reduction of this complex is bopy-localized, as was proven spectroelectrochemically. This is a rare case in which the localizations of the lowest MLCT excitation and the first reduction are different. (MLCT)-M-3 excited states of both fac-[Re(Cl)(CO)(3)(bopy)(2)] and fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](+) are initially formed vibrationally hot. Their relaxation is manifested by picosecond dynamic shifts of v(Cequivalent toO) IR bands. The X-ray structure of fac-[Re(bopy)(CO)(3)(bpy)](PF6CH3CN)-C-. has been determined.

Phenylphosphinic acid (HPhPO2H) is oxidized to phenylphosphonic acid (PhPO3H2) at room temperature using a solution of [Cu2(μ-O2CCH3)4(H2O)2] in pyridine. The phenylphosphonic acid was recovered as the monomeric copper(II) complex [Cu(PhPO3H)2(C5H5N)4]·H2O (1a), and the reaction thought to proceed via a copper(I) intermediate. Recrystallization of 1a from methanol gave [Cu(PhPO3H)2(C5H5N)4]·2CH3OH (1b). The unsolvated complex [Cu(PhPO3H)2(C5H5N)4] (1c) was prepared by refluxing polymeric [Cu(PhPO3)(H2O)] (2) in pyridine. The X-ray crystal structures of 1b and 1c show that in each of these monomeric complexes the copper(II) ion is ligated by four equatorial pyridine molecules and two axial monoanionic phenylphosphonate groups. A cyclic voltammetric study of 1a revealed a quasi-reversible Cu2+/Cu+ couple with E1/2 = +228 mV (vs Ag/AgCl).

An efficient method of combining neutron diffraction data over an extended Q range with detailed atomistic models is presented. A quantitative and qualitative mapping of the organization of the chain conformation in both glass and liquid phase has been performed. The proposed structural refinement method is based on the exploitation of the intrachain features of the diffraction pattern by the use of internal coordinates for bond lengths, valence angles and torsion rotations. Models are built stochastically by assignment of these internal coordinates from probability distributions with limited variable parameters. Variation of these parameters is used in the construction of models that minimize the differences between the observed and calculated structure factors. A series of neutron scattering data of 1,4-polybutadiene at the region 20320 K is presented. Analysis of the experimental data yield bond lengths for C-C and C=C of 1.54 and 1.35 Å respectively. Valence angles of the backbone were found to be at 112 and 122.8 for the CCC and CC=C respectively. Three torsion angles corresponding to the double bond and the adjacent R and β bonds were found to occupy cis and trans, s(, trans and g( and trans states, respectively. We compare our results with theoretical predictions, computer simulations, RIS models, and previously reported experimental results.

Large-scale ocean transports of heat and freshwater have not been well monitored, and yet the regional budgets of these quantities are important to understanding the role of the oceans in climate and climate change. In contrast, atmospheric heat and freshwater transports are commonly assessed from atmospheric reanalysis products, despite the presence of non-conserving data assimilation based on the wealth of distributed atmospheric observations as constraints. The ability to carry out ocean reanalyses globally at eddy-permitting resolutions of 1/4 ° or better, along with new global ocean observation programs, now makes a similar approach viable for the ocean. In this paper we examine the budgets and transports within a global high resolution ocean model constrained by ocean data assimilation, and compare them with independent oceanic and atmospheric estimates.
