1,1′-Diacetylferrocene reacts with neat hydrate over a period of 72 h at 20°C to give the dihydrazone [H2NN(Me)CC5H4FeC5H4C(Me)NNH2] (6) in almost quantitative yield. Either prolonging the reaction time or reacting 6 with fresh hydrazine causes the iron to be stripped from the metallocene and bis(hydrazine)bis(hydrazinecarboxylato-N′,O) iron(II), [Fe(N2H4)2(OOCNHNH2)2] (11), crystallizes. In the presence of Ba2+ or Mo2+ ions two molecules of complex 6 react to give the cyclic diazine [N(Me)CC5H4FeC5H4C (Me)N]2 (7) in high yield. Hydrazine is liberated in this reaction. Complexes 6 and 11 have been characterized crystallographically. The cyclic voltammograms of complexes 6 and 7 contain essentially non-reversible oxidation peaks.

A 1H NMR study of monosubstituted η-cyclopentadienyl-rhodium(I) complexes of type LLRh(C5H4X) and -iridium(I) complexes of type L2Ir(C5H4X) (L = ethene, LL = 1,3- or 1,5-diolefin; X = C(C6H5)3, CHO, or COOCH3) has been carried out. For complexes of both metals in which the neutral ligand is ethene or a non-conjugated diolefin the NMR spectra of the cyclopentadienyl protons are unusual in that H(2), H(5) resonate to high field either at room temperature or below. The corresponding NMR spectra for the cyclopentadienyl ring protons of complexes where the neutral ligand is a conjugated diene are, with one exception, normal. A single crystal X-ray structural analysis of (η4-2,4-dimethylpenta-1,4-diene)(η5-formylcyclopentadienyl)rhodium(I) (which exhibits an abnormal 1H NMR spectrum) reveals substantial localisation of electron density in the C(3)C(4) Cp ring bond (1.283(33) Å) which may be consistent with a contribution from an ‘allyl-ene’ rotamer to the ring—metal bonding scheme. An extended Hückel calculation with self consistent charge iteration was performed on this complex. The results predict a greater Mulliken overlap population for the C(3)C(4) bond in the cyclopentadienyl ring and show that the localisation is dependent on both the Cp ring substituent and the nature of the diolefin. The mass spectral fragmentation patterns of some representative diene complexes of iridium(I) and rhodium(I) are presented.

The reaction of 2-chloro-3-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (3) with the anion of ethyl cyanoacetate led to a mixture of two epimeric fused-ring cyclopropane compounds, characterised as exo- and endo-1-cyano-1 -ethoxycarbonyl-1a-methyl-1a,7a-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[b]naphthalene-2,7-dione (8) and (9). Various hydrolysis products of these were prepared and an X-ray crystallographic analysis was carried out on one of them, 1-carbamoyl-1 -carboxy-1a-methyl-1a,7a-dihydro-1H-cyclopropa[b]-naphthalene-2,7-dione (17). The reaction of 2-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone (1) with ethyl diazoacetate gave a fused pyrazoline derivative, 3-ethoxycarbonyl-4-hydroxy-9a-methyl-1,9a-dihydro-benz[f]indazol-9-one (22), while reaction of 2-methyl-3-nitro-1,4-naphthoquinone (5) with diazomethane led to a fused Δ2-isoxazoline N-oxide, 3a-methyl-3,3a-dihydroisoxazolo[3,4-b]naphthalene-4,9-dione 1-oxide (26).

Two novel, monomeric heteroleptic tin(II) derivatives, [Sn{2-[(Me3Si)2C]C5H4N}R] [R = C6H2Pri3-2,4,6 1 or CH(PPh2)2 2], have been prepared, characterised by multinuclear NMR spectroscopies and their molecular structures determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both compounds were prepared from the corresponding heteroleptic tin(II) chloro-analogue, [Sn{2-[(Me3Si)2C]C5H4N}Cl], and thus demonstrate the utility of this compound as a precursor to further examples of heteroleptic tin(II) derivatives: such compounds are often unstable with respect to ligand redistribution. In each case, the central tin(II) is three-co-ordinate. Crystals of trimeric [{Sn(C6H2Pri3-2,4,6)2}3] 3 were found to undergo a solid state phase transition, which may be ascribed to ordering of the ligand isopropyl groups. At 220 K the unit cell is orthorhombic, space group Pna21, compared with monoclinic, space group P21/c, for the same crystals at 298 K, in which there is an effective tripling of the now b (originally c) axis. This result illustrates the extreme crowding generated by this bulky aryl ligand.

The compounds trans-[PtBr{C(C10H15)CH2}(PEt3)2](1)(C10H15= adamant-1-yl), trans-[MBr{C(C10H7)CMe2}(PEt3)2][M = Pd (2) or Pt (3); C10H7= naphth-1-yl], and trans-[MBr{C(Ph)CMe2}(PEt3)2][M = Pd (4) or Pt (5)] have been prepared from Grignard [for (2) and (3)] or lithium reagents [for (1), (4), and (5)] and appropriate dichlorobis(phosphine)metal derivatives. Full single-crystal X-ray data are reported for (1) and (3), and reveal unusually long PtC(sp2) bonds. Insertion reactions into these MC bonds occur with MeNC [for (1), (3), and (5)], and with CO [for (1) and (3)]; the latter, the first reported insertion into a PtC(sp2) bond, occurs under mild conditions as expected for the abnormally long MC bonds.

The reaction of 4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one with cyanoacetamide is not confined to a 1 : 1 reaction [which results in formation of 3-cyano-6-methyl-4-phenylpyridin-2(1H)-one]. The reaction of 2 mole equivalents of 4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one with one of cyanoacetamide also takes place, the products being 1-cyano-6-hydroxy-6-methyl-4-methylene-8,9-diphenyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one and 3-cyano-6-methyl-3-(3-oxo-1-phenylbutyl)-4-phenyl-3,4-dihydropyridin-2(1H)-one. The latter compound cyclises in acid medium to form 6-acetyl-4-cyano-1-methyl-5,8-diphenyl-2-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-3-one. X-Ray crystal structures of the 3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one and the 3-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-2-one derivatives are described.

The recent solar minimum was the longest and deepest of the space age, with the lowest average sunspot numbers for nearly a century. The Sun appears to be exiting a grand solar maximum (GSM) of activity which has persisted throughout the space age, and is headed into a significantly quieter period. Indeed, initial observations of solar cycle 24 (SC24) continue to show a relatively low heliospheric magnetic field strength and sunspot number (R), despite the average latitude of sunspots and the inclination of the heliospheric current sheet showing the rise to solar maximum is well underway. We extrapolate the available SC24 observations forward in time by assuming R will continue to follow a similar form to previous cycles, despite the end of the GSM, and predict a very weak cycle 24, with R peaking at ∼6575 around the middle/end of 2012. Similarly, we estimate the heliospheric magnetic field strength will peak around 6nT. We estimate that average galactic cosmic ray fluxes above 1GV rigidity will be ∼10% higher in SC24 than SC23 and that the probability of a large SEP event during this cycle is 0.8, compared to 0.5 for SC23. Comparison of the SC24 R estimates with previous ends of GSMs inferred from 9300 years of cosmogenic isotope data places the current evolution of the Sun and heliosphere in the lowest 5% of cases, suggesting Maunder Minimum conditions are likely within the next 40 years.
