The potential of the τ-ω model for retrieving the volumetric moisture content of bare and vegetated soil from dual polarisation passive microwave data acquired at single and multiple angles is tested. Measurement error and several additional sources of uncertainty will affect the theoretical retrieval accuracy. These include uncertainty in the soil temperature, the vegetation structure and consequently its microwave singlescattering albedo, and uncertainty in soil microwave emissivity based on its roughness. To test the effects of these uncertainties for simple homogeneous scenes, we attempt to retrieve soil moisture from a number of simulated microwave brightness temperature datasets generated using the τ-ω model. The uncertainties for each influence are estimated and applied to curves generated for typical scenarios, and an inverse model used to retrieve the soil moisture content, vegetation optical depth and soil temperature. The effect of each influence on the theoretical soil moisture retrieval limit is explored, the likelihood of each sensor configuration meeting user requirements is assessed, and the most effective means of improving moisture retrieval indicated.

A life cycle of the Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) was constructed, based on 21 years of outgoing long-wave radiation data. Regression maps of NCEP–NCAR reanalysis data for the northern winter show statistically significant upper-tropospheric equatorial wave patterns linked to the tropical convection anomalies, and extratropical wave patterns over the North Pacific, North America, the Atlantic, the Southern Ocean and South America. To assess the cause of the circulation anomalies, a global primitive-equation model was initialized with the observed three-dimensional (3D) winter climatological mean flow and forced with a time-dependent heat source derived from the observed MJO anomalies. A model MJO cycle was constructed from the global response to the heating, and both the tropical and extratropical circulation anomalies generally matched the observations well. The equatorial wave patterns are established in a few days, while it takes approximately two weeks for the extratropical patterns to appear. The model response is robust and insensitive to realistic changes in damping and basic state. The model tropical anomalies are consistent with a forced equatorial Rossby–Kelvin wave response to the tropical MJO heating, although it is shifted westward by approximately 20° longitude relative to observations. This may be due to a lack of damping processes (cumulus friction) in the regions of convective heating. Once this shift is accounted for, the extratropical response is consistent with theories of Rossby wave forcing and dispersion on the climatological flow, and the pattern correlation between the observed and modelled extratropical flow is up to 0.85. The observed tropical and extratropical wave patterns account for a significant fraction of the intraseasonal circulation variance, and this reproducibility as a response to tropical MJO convection has implications for global medium-range weather prediction. Using the Met Office large-eddy model (LEM) we simulate a mixed-phase altocumulus cloud that was observed from Chilbolton in southern England by a 94 GHz Doppler radar, a 905 nm lidar, a dual-wavelength microwave radiometer and also by four radiosondes. It is important to test and evaluate such simulations with observations, since there are significant differences between results from different cloud-resolving models for ice clouds. Simulating the Doppler radar and lidar data within the LEM allows us to compare observed and modelled quantities directly, and allows us to explore the relationships between observed and unobserved variables. For general-circulation models, which currently tend to give poor representations of mixed-phase clouds, the case shows the importance of using: (i) separate prognostic ice and liquid water, (ii) a vertical resolution that captures the thin layers of liquid water, and (iii) an accurate representation the subgrid vertical velocities that allow liquid water to form. It is shown that large-scale ascents and descents are significant for this case, and so the horizontally averaged LEM profiles are relaxed towards observed profiles to account for these. The LEM simulation then gives a reasonable. cloud, with an ice-water path approximately two thirds of that observed, with liquid water at the cloud top, as observed. However, the liquid-water cells that form in the updraughts at cloud top in the LEM have liquid-water paths (LWPs) up to half those observed, and there are too few cells, giving a mean LWP five to ten times smaller than observed. In reality, ice nucleation and fallout may deplete ice-nuclei concentrations at the cloud top, allowing more liquid water to form there, but this process is not represented in the model. Decreasing the heterogeneous nucleation rate in the LEM increased the LWP, which supports this hypothesis. The LEM captures the increase in the standard deviation in Doppler velocities (and so vertical winds) with height, but values are 1.5 to 4 times smaller than observed (although values are larger in an unforced model run, this only increases the modelled LWP by a factor of approximately two). The LEM data show that, for values larger than approximately 12 cm s(-1), the standard deviation in Doppler velocities provides an almost unbiased estimate of the standard deviation in vertical winds, but provides an overestimate for smaller values. Time-smoothing the observed Doppler velocities and modelled mass-squared-weighted fallspeeds shows that observed fallspeeds are approximately two-thirds of the modelled values. Decreasing the modelled fallspeeds to those observed increases the modelled IWC, giving an IWP 1.6 times that observed.

Snow properties have been retrieved from satellite data for many decades. While snow extent is generally felt to be obtained reliably from visible-band data, there is less confidence in the measurements of snow mass or water equivalent derived from passive microwave instruments. This paper briefly reviews historical passive microwave instruments and products, and compares the large-scale patterns from these sources to those of general circulation models and leading reanalysis products. Differences are seen to be large between the datasets, particularly over Siberia. A better understanding of the errors in both the model-based and measurement-based datasets is required to exploit both fully. Techniques to apply to the satellite measurements for improved large-scale snow data are suggested.

The microwave spectra of CHD2CN and CHD2NC have been measured from 18 to 40 GHz; about 20 type A and 30 type C transitions have been observed for each molecule. These have been fitted to a Hamiltonian using 3 rotational constants, and 5 quartic and 4 sextic distortion constants, in the IrS reduction of Watson [in “Vibrational spectra and structure” Vol. 6 (1977)]; the standard error of the fit is 26 kHz. For methyl cyanide the 5 quartic distortion constants have been used to further refine the recent harmonic force field of Duncan et al. [J. Mol. Spectrosc. 69, 123 (1978)], but the changes are small. Finally, for both molecules, the harmonic force field has been used to determine zero point average moments of inertia Iz from the ground state rotational constants for many isotopic species, and these have been used to determine an rz structure. The results are compared with rs structure calculations.

The J + 1 ← J transitions (J = 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6) in the microwave spectrum of SiH3NCO have been assigned for the vibrational ground state and for the vibrational states v10 = 1, 2, and 3. The results for v10 = 0 confirm earlier work. The vibration-rotation constants show a remarkable variation with v10 and l10. To a large extent the anomalous behavior of these constants has been explained in terms of a strongly anharmonic potential function for the ν10 vibrational mode.

The microwave spectra of 2-aminopyridine-NH2, -ND2, and of both of the two possible -NHD molecules have been observed and assigned in the 0+ vibrational state of the amino group inversion vibration; the assignment for three of the molecules in the 0− state is also made. From intensity measurements the 0+-0− splitting is estimated to be 135 ± 25 cm−1 for the -NH2 molecule and 95 ± 30 cm−1 for the -ND2 molecule. The rotational constants are interpreted in terms of a structure in which the amino group is bent about 32° out of the molecular plane, the c coordinates of the two amino H atoms being 0.21 and 0.28 Å. Stark effect measurements give a dipole moment of about 0.9 D which is almost entirely in the b axis, and which changes quite significantly between the 0+ and 0− states.

The microwave spectra of oxetane (trimethylene oxide) and its three symmetrically deuterated isotopic species have been observed on a Hewlett-Packard microwave spectrometer from 26.5 to 40 GHz. For the parent species, the β-d2 and the αα′-d4 species, about 300 lines have been assigned for each molecule, and for the d6 species more than 600 lines have been assigned. The assignments range from v = 0 to v = 5 in the puckering vibration; although they are mostly Q transitions, either 3 or 4 R transitions have been observed for each vibrational state. The spectra have been interpreted using an effective rotational hamiltonian for each vibrational state, including five quartic distortion constants according to Watson's formulation, and a variable number of sextic distortion constants; in general, the lines are fitted to about ± 10 kHz. The distortion constants show an anomalous zig-zag dependence on the puckering vibrational quantum number, similar to that first observed for the rotational constants by Gwinn and coworkers. This is interpreted according to a simple modification of the standard theory of centrifugal distortion, involving the double minimum potential function in the puckering coordinate.

The J = 2−1 microwave spectrum of six isotopic species of HSiF3 has been observed and assigned in excited states of five of the six fundamental vibrations. The assignment is based on relative intensities, double resonance experiments, and trial anharmonic force constant calculations. Analysis of the spectra leads to experimental values for five of the constants, all three l-doubling constants qt, one Fermi resonance constant φ233, and one zeta constant. The harmonic force field has been refined to all the available data on vibration wavenumbers, centrifugal distortion constants, and zeta constants. The cubic anharmonic force field has been refined to the data on and qt constants, using two models: a valence force model with two cubic force constants for SiH and SiF stretching, and a more sophisticated model. With the help of these calculations, the following equilibrium structure has been determined: re(SiH) = 1.4468(±5) Å, re(SiF) = 1.5624(±1) Å, HSiF = 110.64(±3)°,

Attempts to observe ΔK = ±1 transitions in the rotational spectrum of CF3CCH and CF3H in the first excited state of a degenerate vibration, by direct absorption in the Y band and K band regions of the microwave spectrum, have not been successful. In the course of this work the J = 3-2 and 4-3 rotational spectrum of CF3CCH has been observed with higher sensitivity than previously, and from the positions of the vibrational satellites several new rB values have been determined.

The microwave spectrum for thietan-2,2,4,4-d4 is analysed in six of its lowest puckering states and up to J = 25. The close lying pairs of states of vp = 0/1, 2/3 and 4/5 are treated with a vibration-rotation hamiltonian which includes an off-diagonal coupling term in vp. Additional corrections to this coupling term in higher powers of the angular momentum operator are derived and their importance for improving the fit of calculated to observed data is tested. The variation of the centrifugal distortion constants with vp follows the model of Creswell and Mills (1974, J. molec. Spectrosc., 52, 392). A value is determined for the derivative with respect to the puckering coordinate of the ac-component of the inverse moment of inertia tensor.

The microwave spectrum of 1-pyrazoline has been observed from 18 to 40 GHz in the six lowest states of the ring-puckering vibration. It is an a-type spectrum of a near oblate asymmetric top. Each vibrational state has been fitted to a separate effective Hamiltonian, and the vibrational dependence of both the rotational constants and the quartic centrifugal distortion constants has been observed and analyzed. The v = 0 and 1 states have also been analyzed using a coupled Hamiltonian; this gives consistent results, with an improved fit to the high J data. The preferred choice of Durig et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 52, 6096 (1970)] for the ring-puckering potential is confirmed as essentially correct, but the A and B inertial axes are shown to be interchanged from those assumed by Durig et al. in their analysis of the mid-infrared spectrum.
