Using monthly mean data, daily data, and theoretical arguments, relationships between surface pressure variations associated with the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), tropopause height, and the strength of the stratospheric vortex are established. An increase in the NAO index leads to a stronger stratospheric vortex, about 4 days later, as a result of increased equatorward refraction of upward-propagating Rossby waves. At tropopause level the effects of the enhanced NAO index and stratospheric polar vortex are opposite, resulting in a lower tropopause over Iceland and a higher tropopause over the Arctic. The raising of the Arctic tropopause leads to a stretching and spinup of the tropospheric column and is therefore associated with a lowering of the surface pressure near the North Pole. For monthly mean data it is found that a standard deviation increase in the NAO index is associated with a 10% increase in the strength of the stratospheric vortex, as measured by potential vorticity at 500 K. A simple theoretical model predicts that this is associated with about 300-m elevation of the Arctic tropopause, as is observed, and a 5-hPa lowering of the surface pressure at the North Pole. The effects of the spinup of the tropospheric column may project on the NAO pattern so that the stratosphere acts as an integrator of the NAO index.

Soluble factors such as ADP and thromboxane (TX) A(2) that are secreted or released by platelets at sites of tissue injury, mediate autocrine and paracrine regulation of platelet function, resulting in rapid localised thrombus formation. The suppression of platelet function, particularly through targeting such secondary regulatory mechanisms, that serve to 'fine-tune' the platelet response, has proven effective in the prevention of inappropriate platelet activation that results in thrombosis. The most commonly used anti-platelet approaches (ADP receptor antagonism or inhibition of TXA(2) synthesis), however, lack efficacy in many patients, suggesting the existence of additional uncharacterised mechanisms for the regulation of platelet function. Recent data, which form a focus of this review, have identified peripheral tachykinin peptide family members, such as substance P and the newly identified endokinins, as physiologically important positive feedback regulators of platelet function. The actions of tachykinins that are released from platelets during activation are mediated by the neurokinin-1 receptor. Initial analysis of the role of this receptor in platelet thrombus formation, and thrombosis in the mouse, indicate this to be a promising new target for the development of anti-thrombotic drugs. Accurately measured peptide masses can be used for large-scale protein identification from bacterial whole-cell digests as an alternative to tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) provided mass measurement errors of a few parts-per-million (ppm) are obtained. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance (FTICR) mass spectrometry (MS) routinely achieves such mass accuracy either with internal calibration or by regulating the charge in the analyzer cell. We have developed a novel and automated method for internal calibration of liquid chromatography (LC)/FTICR data from whole-cell digests using peptides in the sample identified by concurrent MS/MS together with ambient polydimethyl-cyclosiloxanes as internal calibrants in the mass spectra. The method reduced mass measurement error from 4.3 +/- 3.7 ppm to 0.3 +/- 2.3 ppm in an E. coli LC/FTICR dataset of 1000 MS and MS/MS spectra and is applicable to all analyses of complex protein digests by FTICRMS. Conducts a study into how contrast could be established when using colours frequently used in everyday environments, and how different adjacent colours had to be in terms of chromaticity, saturation and/or hue in order for a difference to be discerned between them by fully sighted people and most visually impaired people. Location within a building where contrast would have the greatest benefits is considered. Relates the philosophy behind design procedures and decisions to meet the objectives.

In designing modern office buildings, building spaces are frequently zoned by introducing internal partitioning, which may have a significant influence on the room air environment. This internal partitioning was studied by means of model test, numerical simulation, and statistical analysis as the final stage. In this paper, the results produced from the statistical analysis are summarized and presented.

The internal partitioning, which is frequently introduced in open-space planning due to its flexibility, was tested to study its effects on the room air quality as well as ventilation performance. For the study, physical tests using a small model room and numerical modeling using CFD computation were utilized to evaluate different test conditions employing mixing ventilation from the ceiling. The partition parameters, such as its location, height, and the gap underneath, as well as contaminant source location were tested under isothermal conditions. This paper summarizes the results from the study.

This article reports on part of a larger study of the impact of strategy training in listening on learners of French, aged 16 to 17. One aim of the project was to investigate whether such training might have a positive effect on the self-efficacy of learners, by helping them see the relationship between the strategies they employed and what they achieved. One group of learners, as well as receiving strategy training, also received detailed feedback on their listening strategy use and on the reflective diaries they were asked to keep, in order to draw their attention to the relationship between strategies and learning outcomes. Another group received strategy training without feedback or reflective diaries, while a comparison group received neither strategy training nor feedback. As a result of the training, there was some evidence that students who had received feedback had made the biggest gains in certain aspects of self-efficacy for listening; although their gains as compared to the non-feedback group were not as great as had been anticipated. Reasons for this are discussed. The article concludes by suggesting changes in how teachers approach listening comprehension that may improve learners' view of themselves as listeners.

A numerical mesoscale model is used to make a high-resolution simulation of the marine boundary layer in the Persian Gulf, during conditions of offshore flow from Saudi Arabia. A marine internal boundary layer (MIBL) and a sea-breeze circulation (SBC) are found to co-exist. The sea breeze develops in the mid-afternoon, at which time its front is displaced several tens of kilometres offshore. Between the coast and the sea-breeze system, the MIBL that occurs is consistent with a picture described in the existing literature. However, the MIBL is perturbed by the SBC, the boundary layer deepening significantly seaward of the sea-breeze front. Our analysis suggests that this strong, localized deepening is not a direct consequence of frontal uplift, but rather that the immediate cause is the retardation of the prevailing, low-level offshore wind by the SBC. The simulated boundary-layer development can be accounted for by using a simple 1D Lagrangian model of growth driven by the surface heat flux. This model is obtained as a straightforward modification of an established MIBL analytic growth model.

This paper presents an application study into the use of a bi-directional link with the human nervous system by means of an implant, positioned through neurosurgery. Various applications are described including the interaction of neural signals with an articulated hand, a group of cooperative autonomous robots and to control the movement of a mobile platform. The microelectrode array implant itself is described in detail. Consideration is given to a wider range of possible robot mechanisms, which could interact with the human nervous system through the same technique.

A series of scale model measurements of transverse electromagnetic mode tapered slot antennas are presented. They show that the beam launched by this type of antenna is astigmatic. It is shown how an off-axis spherical mirror can be used to correct this astigmatism to allow efficient coupling to quasi-optical systems. A millimetre wave antenna and mirror combination is described and, with the aid of solid state noise diodes, the coupling of the launched beam to a quasi-optical spectrometer is shown to be in good agreement with that predicted by the scale model measurements.
