Interference and communications among active network applications

This paper focuses on active networks applications and in particular on the possible interactions among these applications. Active networking is a very promising research field which has been developed recently, and which poses several interesting challenges to network designers. A number of proposals for e±cient active network architectures are already to be found in the literature. However, how two or more active network applications may interact has not being investigated so far. In this work, we consider a number of applications that have been designed to exploit the main features of active networks and we discuss what are the main benefits that these applications may derive from them. Then, we introduce some forms of interaction including interference and communications among applications, and identify the components of an active network architecture that are needed to support these forms of interaction. We conclude by presenting a brief example of an active network application exploiting the concept of interaction.

Forces information and media services in Operation Granby 1990-91

The paper looks at the setting up of media services for British Army forces engaged in Operation Granby, the British participation in Operation Desert Storm, the liberation of Kuwait from Iraqi occupation in 1991. In particular, the piece focuses on the creation of a force newspaper and radio station.There is far more involved in the organisation of modern war than simply battles themselves One aspect is the importance of creating and maintaining morale, which can be achieved in a number of ways, especially by keeping troops informed of their progress, purpose and mission as operations unfold. This was specifically recognised by commanders in the Gulf War, who ensured the smooth transmission of information by the provision of media services for forces personnel throughout the War. Here S J Anglim concentrates on the difficulties inherent in setting up and running the Gulf Forces newspaper, The Sandy Times, a Radio service and producing video reviews, all of which played their part in ensunng high morale. He concludes that there are lessons to be learnt and implemented for the success of any future conflicts.

Ontological modelling of content management and provision

Information provision to address the changing requirements can be best supported by content management. The Current information technology enables information to be stored and provided from various distributed sources. To identify and retrieve relevant information requires effective mechanisms for information discovery and assembly. This paper presents a method, which enables the design of such mechanisms, with a set of techniques for articulating and profiling users' requirements, formulating information provision specifications, realising management of information content in repositories, and facilitating response to the user's requirements dynamically during the process of knowledge construction. These functions are represented in an ontology which integrates the capability of the mechanisms. The ontological modelling in this paper has adopted semiotics principles with embedded norms to ensure coherent course of actions represented in these mechanisms. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Experimental comparison of the comprehensibility of a Z specification and its implementation in Java

Comprehensibility is often raised as a problem with formal notations, yet formal methods practitioners dispute this. In a survey, one interviewee said 'formal specifications are no more difficult to understand than code'. Measurement of comprehension is necessarily comparative and a useful comparison for a specification is against its implementation. Practitioners have an intuitive feel for the comprehension of code. A quantified comparison will transfer this feeling to formal specifications. We performed an experiment to compare the comprehension of a Z specification with that of its implementation in Java. Exposure to space radiation of high performance infrared multilayer filters and materials technology experiment

Infrared optical-multilayer filters and materials were exposed to the space environment of low Earth orbit on LDEF. This paper summarizes the effects of that environment on the physical and optical properties of the filters and materials flown.

Exposure to space radiation of high-performance infrared multilayer-filters and materials technology experiments

Infrared multilayer interference filters have been used extensively in satellite radiometers for about 15 years. Filters manufactured by the University of Reading have been used in Nimbus 5, 6, and 7, TIROS N, and the Pioneer Venus orbiter. The ability of the filters to withstand the space environment in these applications is critical; if degradation takes place, the effects would range from worsening of signal-to-noise performance to complete system failure. An experiment on the LDEF will enable the filters, for the first time, to be subjected to authoritative spectral measurements following space exposure to ascertain their suitability for spacecraft use and to permit an understanding of degradation mechanisms.
