Reactivities of pyridylthioazophenols (1) with zinc(II) salts have been studied and the complexes isolated in pure form and characterized. Pyridylthioazophenols react with zinc( II)acetate in MeOH/EtOH at room temperature to give a series of pyridylsulfinylazophenols (2)but no zinc( II) complex. The sulfoxides (2) have been characterized by IR and NMR. One of the pyridylsulfinylazophenols (2a) has been subjected to single-crystal X-ray analysis in order to confirm details of its structure. A series of dimeric zinc( II) complexes of tetradentate NSNO pyridylthioazophenolates has been isolated through reaction of zinc nitrate in MeOH followed by in situ reaction with azide ion, which acts as a mu-(1,1) bridge. All complexes have been characterized spectroscopically. The detailed structure of one of the dinuclear zinc( II) complexes has been established by a single-crystal X-ray structure determination. In complex 3a two octahedrally coordinated zinc( II) ions are bridged by two end-on azide ions. No reactions of pyridylthioazophenols with zinc chloride in refluxing EtOH have been observed.

Two sets of nickel(11) complexes of a series of tetradentate NSNO ligands were synthesized and isolated in their pure form. All these complexes, formulated as [Ni(L)Cl](2) and [Ni(L)(N-3)](2) [HL = pyridylthioazophenols], were characterized using physicochemical and spectroscopic tools. The solid-state structures of two complexes (1a and 2a) were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the nickel ion of the complexes is octahedral and the complexes are dimeric in nature. In 1, two Ni(II) ions are bridged by two Cl- anions while in 2 they are bridged by two azide ions in a mu-1,1-bridging fashion. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two polymeric azido bridged complexes [Ni2L2(N-3)(3)](n)(ClO4). (1) and [Cu(bpdS)(2)(N-3)],(ClO4),(H2O)(2.5n) (2) [L = Schiff base, obtained from the condensation of pyridine-2-aldehyde with N,N,2,2-tetramethyl-1,3-propanediamine; bpds = 4,4'-bipyridyl disulfide] have been synthesized and their crystal structures have been determined. Complex 1, C26H42ClN15Ni2O4, crystallizes in a triclinic system, space group P1 with a 8.089(13), b = 9.392(14), c = 12.267(18) angstrom, a = 107.28(l), b 95.95(1), gamma = 96.92(1)degrees and Z = 2; complex 2, C20H21ClCuN7O6.5S4, crystallizes in an orthorhombic system, space group Pnna with a = 10.839(14), b = 13.208(17), c = 19.75(2) angstrom and Z = 4. The crystal structure of I consists of 1D polymers of nickel(L) units, alternatively connected by single and double bridging mu-(1,3-N-3) ligand with isolated perchlorate anions. Variable temperature magnetic susceptibility data of the complex have been measured and the fitting,of magnetic data was carried out applying the Borris-Almenar formula for such types of alternating one-dimensional S = 1 systems, based on the Hamiltonian H = -J Sigma(S2iS2i-1 + aS(2i)S(2i+1)). The best-fit parameters obtained are J = -106.7 +/- 2 cm(-1); a = 0.82 +/- 0.02; g = 2.21 +/- 0.02. Complex 2 is a 2D network of 4,4 topology with the nodes occupied by the Cu-II ions, and the edges formed by single azide and double bpds connectors. The perchlorate anions are located between pairs of bpds. The magnetic data have been fitted considering the complex as a pseudo-one-dimensional system, with all copper((II)) atoms linked by [mu(1,3-azido) bridging ligands at axial positions (long Cu...N-3 distances) since the coupling through long bpds is almost nil. The best-fit parameters obtained with this model are J = -1.21 +/- 0.2 cm(-1), g 2.14 +/- 0.02. (c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2005).

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]center dot 2H(2)O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the Nil, as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)(2)center dot 4H(2)O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2 center dot 2H(2)O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N-3)](2) (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and Cu(NO3)(2)center dot 3H(2)O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O or Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O to yield [Ni(hap)(2)] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, Ni-II possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around Cu-II in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around Cu-II is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the Cu-II atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone. The axial site is coordinated by a water molecule. Complex 7 is a square-planar complex with the Ni atom bonded to four oxygen atoms from two hap moieties. The mononuclear units of 2 and dinuclear units of 3 are linked by strong hydrogen bonds to form a one-dimensional network. The mononuclear units of 5 and 6 are joined together to form a dimer by very strong hydrogen bonds through the coordinated water molecule. These dimers are further involved in hydrogen bonding with the respective counteranions to form 2-D net-like open frameworks. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).

Anion directed, template syntheses of two dinuclear copper(II) complexes of mono-condensed Schiff base ligand Hdipn (4-[(3-aminopentylimino)-methyl]-benzene-1,3-diol) involving 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde and 1,3-diaminopentane were realized in the presence of bridging azide and acetate anions. Both complexes, [Cu-2(dipn)(2)(N-3)(2)] (1) and [Cu-2(dip(n))(2)(OAc)(2)] (2) have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. The two mononuclear units are joined together by basal-apical, double end-on azido bridges in complex 1 and by basal-apical, double mono-atomic acetate oxygen-bridges in 2. Both complexes form rectangular grid-like supramolecular structures via H-bonds connecting the azide or acetate anion and the p-hydroxy group of 2,4- dihydroxybenzaldehyde. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal that complex 1 has antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -2.10 cm (1)) through the azide bridge while 2 has intra-dimer ferromagnetic coupling through the acetate bridge and inter-dimer antiferromagnetic coupling through H-bonds (J = 2.85 cm (1), J' = -1.08 cm (1)). Three new basal-apical, mu(2)-1,1-azide bridged complexes, [CuL1(N-3)](2) (1), [CuL2(N-3)](2) (2) and [CuL3(N-3)]2 (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff base blocking ligands [L-1=N-(3-aminopropyl) salicylaldimine, L-2=7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one and L-3=8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one) have been synthesised and their molecular structures determined by X-ray crystallography. In complex 1, there is no inter-dimer H-bonding. However, complexes 2 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by strong H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable-temperature (300-2 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements and magnetization measurements at 2 K reveal that complexes 1 and 2 have antiferromagnetic coupling while 3 has ferromagnetic coupling which is also confirmed by EPR spectra at 4-300 K. Magnetostructural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds in complexes 2 and 3.

The blue coloured complex [Cu(HL)(H2O)(ClO4)]ClO.H2O.MeOH (1.H2O.MeOH) has been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2).6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-methylpyridyl)(3,5-dimethyl-2-hydroxybenzyl)amine (HL) in methanol. The same reaction, when carried out in the presence of sodium azide, afforded a dark-blue complex of formula [Cu-2(HL)(2)(mu-1,1-N-3)(2)](ClO4)(2) (2). The crystal and molecular structures of the complexes have been solved. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility data in the range of 2-300 K for 2 reveal the existence of an antiferromagnetic interaction through an end-on azido linker. Temperature-dependent susceptibility studies for 2 were fitted using the Bleaney-Bowers expression, which led to the parameters J = -3.2 cm(-1), g = 2.12 and R = 2.14 x 10(-4). Three kinds of copper(II) azide complexes have been synthesised in excellent yields by reacting Cu(ClO4)(2) . 6H(2)O with N,N-bis(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (L-1); N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-dimethylethylenediamine (L-2); and N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N',N'-diethylethylenediamine (L-3), respectively, in the presence of slight excess of sodium azide. They are the monomeric Cu(L-1)(N-3)(ClO4) (1), the end-to-end diazido-bridged Cu-2(L-2)(2)(mu-1,3-N-3)(2)(ClO4)(2) (2) and the single azido-bridged (mu-1,3-) 1D chain [Cu(L-3)(mu-1,3-N-3)](n)(ClO4)(n) (3). The crystal and molecular structures of these complexes have been solved. The variable temperature magnetic moments of type 2 and type 3 complexes were studied. Crude cell-free extracts from Lactobacillus reuteri grown on cellobiose, maltose, lactose and raffinose were assayed for glycosidic activities. When raffinose was used as the carbon source, alpha-galactosidase was produced, showing the highest yield at the beginning of the stationary growth phase. A 64 kDa enzyme was purified by ultra- and gel filtration, and characterized for its hydrolytic and synthetic activity. Highest hydrolytic activity was found at pH 5.0 at 50 degreesC (K-M 0.55 mM, V-max 0.80 mumol min(-1) mg(-1) of protein). The crude cell-free extract was further used in glycosyl transfer reactions to synthesize oligosaccharides from melibiose and raffinose. At a substrate concentration of 23% (w/v) oligosaccharide mixtures were formed with main products being a trisaccharide at 26% (w/w) yield from melibiose after 8 h and a tetrasaccharide at 18% (w/w) yield from raffinose after 7 h. Methylation analysis revealed the trisaccharide to be 6' alpha-galactosyl melibiose and the tetrasaccharide to be stachyose. In both cases synthesis ceased when hydrolysis of the substrate reached 50%.

A genomic library of Bifidobacterium bifidum (NCIMB 41171) DNA was constructed in Escherichia coli RA11r (melA(-)B(+)) and one alpha-galactosidase encoding gene was isolated. Conceptual translation combined with insertional mutagenesis analysis indicated an open reading frame (ORF) of 759 amino acid (aa) residues encoding an alpha-galactosidase (named as MelA) of 82.8 kDa. Partial purification and characterisation showed that the enzyme had an apparent native molecular mass of a parts per thousand 243 kDa and a subunit size of a parts per thousand 85 kDa. The enzyme belongs to glycosyl hydrolases 36 family with high aa sequence similarities (a parts per thousand 73%) to other known alpha-galactosidases of bifidobacterial origin. Under optimum pH conditions for activity (pH 6.0) and high melibiose concentration (40% w/v), the enzyme was able to form oligosaccharides with degree of polymerisation (DP) a parts per thousand yen3 at higher concentration than DP = 2, with a total yield of 20.5% (w/w).

Strains from anal swabs and chronic otitis externa in dogs were shown to be phylogenetically related to the Enterococcus faecium species group. They shared a number of phenotypic characteristics with these species, but they could be easily differentiated by biochemical reactions. In addition, the canine strains were unusual in their nearly complete failure to grow on sodium azide-containing enterococci-selective media and in their Voges-Proskauer reactions (usually negative). By using 16S rRNA sequencing and DNA-DNA hybridization of representative strains, as well as tDNA interspacer gene PCR and SDS-PAGE of whole-cell proteins, the group of canine strains was shown to constitute a novel enterococcal species. The name Enterococcus canis sp. nov. is proposed for this species, with LMG 12316(T) (= CCUG 46666(T)) as the type strain. Concurrently, the taxonomic situation and nomenclatural position of Enterococcus porcinus were investigated. As no phenotypic or genotypic differences were found between this species and Enterococcus villorum, the name E. porcinus is considered to be a junior synonym of E. villorum.

A strategy is presented that exploits the ability of synthetic polymers of different nature to disturb the strong selfassembly capabilities of amyloid based β-sheet forming peptides. Following a convergent approach, the peptides of interest were synthesized via solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) and the polymers via reversible addition−fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, followed by a copper(I) catalyzed azide− alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) to generate the desired peptide− polymer conjugates. This study focuses on a modified version of the core sequence of the β-amyloid peptide (Aβ), Aβ(16−20) (KLVFF). The influence of attaching short poly(Nisopropylacrylamide) and poly(hydroxyethylacrylate) to the peptide sequences on the self-assembly properties of the hybrid materials were studied via infrared spectroscopy, TEM, circular dichroism and SAXS. The findings indicate that attaching these polymers disturbs the strong self-assembly properties of the biomolecules to a certain degree and permits to influence the aggregation of the peptides based on their β-sheets forming abilities. This study presents an innovative route toward targeted and controlled assembly of amyloid-like fibers to drive the formation of polymeric nanomaterials.

Bis(o-hydroxyacetophenone)nickel(II) dihydrate, on reaction with 1,3-pentanediamine, yields a bis-chelate complex [NiL2]·2H2O (1) of mono-condensed tridentate Schiff baseligand HL {2-[1-(3-aminopentylimino)ethyl]phenol}. The Schiff base has been freed from the complex by precipitating the NiII as a dimethylglyoximato complex. HL reacts smoothly with Ni(SCN)2·4H2O furnishing the complex [NiL(NCS)] (2) and with CuCl2·2H2O in the presence of NaN3 or NH4SCN producing [CuL(N3)]2 (3) or [CuL(NCS)] (4). On the other hand, upon reaction with Cu(ClO4)2·6H2O and Cu(NO3)2·3H2O, the Schiff base undergoes hydrolysis to yield ternary complexes [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]ClO4 (5) and [Cu(hap)(pn)(H2O)]NO3 (6), respectively (Hhap = o-hydroxyacetophenone and pn = 1,3-pentanediamine). The ligand HL undergoes hydrolysis also on reaction with Ni(ClO4)2·6H2O or Ni(NO3)2·6H2O to yield [Ni(hap)2] (7). The structures of the complexes 2, 3, 5, 6, and 7 have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray analysis. In complex 2, NiII possesses square-planar geometry, being coordinated by the tridentate mono-negative Schiff base, L and the isothiocyanate group. The coordination environment around CuII in complex 3 is very similar to that in complex 2 but here two units are joined together by end-on, axial-equatorial azide bridges to result in a dimer in which the geometry around CuII is square pyramidal. In both 5 and 6, the CuII atoms display the square-pyramidal environment; the equatorial sites being coordinated by the two amine groups of 1,3-pentanediamine and two oxygen atoms of o-hydroxyacetophenone.
