Highly strained macrocyclic ether-ketones obtained by nickel-catalyzed cyclization of linear precursor oligomers undergo ring-opening polyinerization via ether exchange in the presence of nucleophilic initiators such as fluoride or phenoxide anions. Strain enthapies of these macrocycles, from DSC analyses of their exothermic ring-opening polymerization are in the range 50-90 kJ mol(-1). Melt-phase polymerization generally affords slightly cross-linked materials, but solution-phase polymerization at high macrocycle concentrations gives fully soluble, high molar mass polymers with inherent viscosities of up to 1.78 dL g(-1). Sequence-analysis of the resulting polymers by C-13 NMR shows that alternating or random monomer sequences may be obtained, depending on whether one or both aromatic rings adjacent to the ether linkages are activated toward nucleophilic attack.

Polymerizable macrocyclic biarylene-ether-ketones and biarylene-ether-sulfones are accessible from linear, bis(chloro)-terminated oligomers via nickel-catalyzed, intramolecular coupling under pseudo-high-dilution conditions. Single-crystal X-ray analyses of the resulting cyclo-oligomers reveal extremely distorted and highly strained geometries, with 4,4 '-biphenylene units showing deviations of up to 70 degrees from linearity.

Spontaneous ring-opening polymerization of macrocyclic aromatic thioether ketones [-1,4-SC6H4CO-C6H4-](n) (n = 3 and 4), in which the thioether linkages are para to the ketone, occurs during rapid, transient heating to 480degreesC, to afford a soluble, semi-crystalline poly(thioether ketone) of high molar mass (eta(inh) > 1.0 dL . g(-1)). Corresponding macrocyclic ether ketone, and a macrocyclic thioether ether ketone in which the thioether linkage is para to the ether rather than to the ketone, show no evidence of polymerization under analogous conditions.

The selective catalytic oxidation of alcohols over a mixture of copper(l) chloride and a number of linear 'linker-less' or 'branched' poly(ethylene glycol)-supported nitroxyl radicals of the 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) family as a catalyst system has been investigated in the presence of molecular oxygen in a batch reactor. It is found that the activity profile of the polymer-supported nitroxyl radicals is in good agreement with that of low-molecular weight nitroxyl catalysts, for example, allylic and benzylic alcohols are oxidised faster than aliphatic alcohols. The oxidations can be tuned to be highly selective such that aldehydes are the only oxidation products observed in the oxidation of primary alcohols and the oxidations of secondary alcohols yield the corresponding ketones. A strong structural effect of the polymeric nitroxyl species on catalytic activity that is dependent upon their spatial orientation of the nitroxyl radicals is particularly noted. The new soluble macromolecular catalysts can be recovered readily from the reaction mixture by solvent precipitation and filtration. In addition, the recycled catalysts demonstrate a similar selectivity with only a small decrease in activity compared to the fresh catalyst even after five repetitive cycles. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Nitroxyl radicals such as 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) are highly selective oxidation catalysts for the conversion of primary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes. In this study, direct tethering of TEMPO units onto linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has afforded macromolecular catalysts that exhibit solubility in both aqueous and organic solvents. Recovery of the dissolved polymer-supported catalyst has been carried out by precipitation with a suitable solvent such as diethyl ether. The high catalyst activities and selectivities associated traditionally with nitroxyl-mediated oxidations of alcohols are retained by the series of "linker-less" linear PEG-TEMPO catalysts in which the TEMPO moiety is coupled directly to the PEG support. Although the selectivity remains unaltered, upon recycling of the linker-less polymer-supported catalysts, extended reaction times are required to maintain high yields of the desired carbonyl compounds. Alternatively, attachment of two nitroxyl radicals onto each functionalized PEG chain terminus via a 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid linker affords branched polymer-supported catalysts. In stark contrast to the linker-less catalysts, these branched nitroxyls exhibit catalytic activities up to five times greater than 4-methoxy-TEMPO alone under similar conditions. In addition, minimal decrease in catalytic activity is observed upon recycling of these branched macromolecular catalysts via solvent-induced precipitation. The high catalytic activities and preservation of activity upon recycling of these branched systems is attributed to enhanced regeneration of the nitroxyl species as a result of intramolecular syn-proportionation.

The self-assembly in aqueous solution of hybrid block copolymers consisting of amphiphilic β-strand peptide sequences flanked by one or two PEG chains was investigated by means of circular dichroism spectroscopy, small-angle X-ray scattering, and transmission electron microscopy. In comparison with the native peptide sequence, it was found that the peptide secondary structure was stabilized against pH variation in the di-and tri-block copolymers with PEG. Small-angle X-ray scattering indicated the presence of fibrillar structures, the dimensions of which are comparable to the estimated width of a β-strand (with terminal PEG chains in the case of the copolymers). Transmission electron microscopy on selectively stained and dried specimens shows directly the presence of fibrils. It is proposed that these fibrils result from the hierarchical self-assembly of peptide β-strands into helical tapes, which then stack into fibrils.

The interactions of bovine serum albumin (BSA) with three ethylene oxide/butylene oxide (E/B) copolymers having different block lengths and varying molecular architectures is examined in this study in aqueous solutions. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) indicates the absence of BSA-polymer binding in micellar systems of copolymers with lengthy hydrophilic blocks. On the contrary, stable protein-polyrner aggregates were observed in the case of E18B10 block copolymer. Results from DLS and SAXS suggest the dissociation of E/B copolymer micelles in the presence of protein and the absorption of polymer chains to BSA surface. At high protein loadings, bound BSA adopts a more compact conformation in solution. The secondary structure of the protein remains essentially unaffected even at high polymer concentrations. Raman spectroscopy was used to give insight to the configurations of the bound molecules in concentrated solutions. In the vicinity of the critical gel concentration of E18B10 introduction of BSA can dramatically modify the phase diagram, inducing a gel-sol-gel transition. The overall picture of the interaction diagram of the E18B10-BSA reflects the shrinkage of the suspended particles due to destabilization of micelles induced by BSA and the gelator nature of the globular protein. SAXS and rheology were used to further characterize the structure and flow behavior of the polymer-protein hybrid gels and sols.

A new class of water-soluble, amphiphilic star block copolymers with a large number of arms was prepared by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) and poly( ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA). As the macroinitiator for the ATRP, a 2-bromoisobutyric acid functionalized fourth-generation hyperbranched polyester (Boltorn H40) was used, which allowed the preparation of star polymers that contained on average 20 diblock copolymer arms. The synthetic concept was validated by AFM experiments, which allowed direct visualization of single molecules of the multiarm star block copolymers. DSC and SAXS experiments on bulk samples suggested a microphase-separated structure, in agreement with the core-shell architecture of the polymers. SAXS experiments on aqueous solutions indicated that the star block copolymers can be regarded as unimolecular micelles composed of a PBMA core and a diffuse PPEGMA corona. The ability of the polymers to encapsulate and release hydrophobic guests was evaluated using H-1 NMR spectroscopy. In dilute aqueous solution, these polymers act as unimolecular containers that can be loaded with up to 27 wt % hydrophobic guest molecules.

The mechanism of the Heck reaction has been studied with regard to transition metal catalysis of the addition of propene and the formation of unsaturated polymers. The reactivity of nickel and palladium complexes with five different bidentate ligands with O,N donor atoms has been investigated by computational methods involving density functional theory. Hence, it is possible to understand the electronic and steric factors affecting the reaction and their relative importance in determining the products formed in regard of their control of the regiochemistry of the products. Our results show that whether the initial addition of propene is trans to O or to N of the bidentate ligand is of crucial importance to the subsequent reactions. Thus when the propene is trans to 0, 1,2-insertion is favoured, but when the propene is trans to N, then 2,1-insertion is favoured. This difference in the preferred insertion pathway can be related to the charge distribution engendered in the propene moiety when the complex is formed. Indeed charge effects are important for catalytic activity but also for regioselectivity. Steric effects are shown to be of lesser importance even when t-butyl is introduced into the bidentate ligand as a substituent. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The structures of intermediates formed in propylene polymerisation using neutral salicyladiminato palladium(II) and nickel(II) complexes as catalysts have been investigated using density functional theory. Calculations show that all low energy intermediates contain agostic interactions either between the metal and a hydrogen from the added propylene forming four- or five-membered chelate rings, or, when a phenyl ring is present, between the metal and an aromatic C-C bond. The agostic interactions with the metal are concomitant with changes in ligand dimensions and electronic properties. In particular when a metal to hydrogen bond is formed, there is a lengthening of the C-H bond. Significant differences are found for the agostic interactions with palladium and nickel in that for Pd there is a clear preference for specific intermediates but for Ni there are several different structures with similar energies which are likely to lead to a greater variety of products on further polymerisation. Propylene polymerization using salicyladiminato metal catalalysts has been studied using density functional theory at the B3LYP/LANL2DZ level. In particular, the effects on the reaction mechanisms of changing the metal from Pd(II) to Ni(II) have been investigated. While the reaction mechanisms involving the salicyladiminato Ni(II) catalyst have been found to be similar to those established previously for the salicyladiminato Pd(II) catalyst, the nickel catalyst was found to differentiate the trans-O intermediate from the trans-.N intermediate with an energy difference of 46.63 U mol(-1) significantly more than the palladium catalyst for which the energy difference was calculated as 35.82 kJ mol(-1). The energy difference between the trans-O configuration and the trans-N configuration is decreased significantly when combining a molecule of propylene with the catalyst. For the Ni catalyst, the trans-O isomer is more stable than the trans-N isomer to a greater extent than for Pd, so that the insertion of propylene from 20 is relatively less favoured for Ni than for Pd. It is predicted that the mechanism of isomerization from 20 to 2N through a rotational transition state TS2O2N is more appropriate for the Ni catalyst system. The palladium system shows a larger preference for pi-coordination than its nickel counterpart, although the latter possesses a lower reaction barrier. It was found that the occupation of the trans-O position in the asymmetric salicyladiminato catalyst is also more favored by the alkene as it is by the alkyl so that insertion of the alkene may always start from a particular configuration so that specific products are obtained. The morphology in the solid state of a series of triblock copolymers comprising a poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) midblock and symmetric poly(gamma-benzyl-L-glutamate) (PBLG) end blocks has been studied using X-ray scattering and microscopy techniques. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) on samples selectively stained with uranyl acetate provided clear assignment of morphologies for as-cast and annealed samples. The thickness of both PEG and PBLG domains was in good agreement with calculations based on the conformations of the respective chains, allowing for the crystal or amorphous state of PEG and the a-helical or P-sheet structure of the PBLG. Atomic force microscopy provided complementary information on surface morphology for several samples that was in good agreement with the structure observed by TEM. A morphology diagram was constructed. Cylindrical structures were observed for ordered samples with low f(PBLG), whereas at higher f(PLBG) there was evidence for broken lamellar and "hockey puck" nanostructures. Regular lamellae were observed for intermediate compositions.

Three triblock copolymers of ethylene oxide and phenyl glycidyl ether, type E(m)G(n)E(m), where G = OCH2-CH(CH2OC6H5) and E = OCH2CH2, were synthesized and characterized by gel-permeation chromatography, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and NMR spectroscopy. Their association properties in aqueous solution were investigated by surface tensiometry and light scattering, yielding values of the critical micelle concentration (cmc), the hydrodynamic radius, and the association number. Gel boundaries in concentrated micellar solution were investigated by tube inversion, and for one copolymer, the temperature and frequency dependence of the dynamic moduli served to confirm and extend the phase diagram and to highlight gel properties. Small-angle X-ray scattering was used to investigate gel structure. The overall aim of the work was to define a block copolymer micellar system with better solubilization capacity for poorly soluble aromatic drugs than had been achieved so far by use of block copoly(oxyalkylene)s. Judged by the solubilization of griseofulvin in aqueous solutions of the E(m)G(n)E(m) copolymers, this aim was achieved.
