Chlorosilylene, ClSiH, was prepared by 193 nm laser flash photolysis of 1-chloro-1-silacyclopent-3-ene in the gas phase. ClSiH was monitored in real time at 457.9 nm using a CW argon ion laser. The kinetics of reactions of ClSiH with C2H4, CH2 = CHCMe3, C2H2, Me2O, SO2, HCl, MeSiH3, Me2SiH2, Me3SiH, MeGeH3, MeGeH3 and precursor have been studied at ambient temperatures for the first time. Addition reactions of ClSiH and reactions with lone pair donors are faster than insertion reactions. Surprisingly ClSiH inserts faster into Si-H than Ge-H bonds. ClSiH is intermediate in reactivity between SiH2 and SiCI2. Relative reactivities of CISiH and SiH2 vary considerably. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new transient species has been produced and detected by the gas-phase, 193 nm laser flash photolysis of 1,3,4-trimethylgermacyclopent-3-ene, TMGCP. The species has strong visible absorptions in the wavelength region 450−520 nm (maximum at 485 nm) and is attributed to the germylene, MeGeH. Time-resolved kinetic studies have led to the first rate constants for its reactions with GeH4, Me2GeH2, C2H2, C2H4, C3H6, i-C4H8, TMGCP, MeOH, HCl, and SO2. The reactivity of MeGeH is compared to those of GeH2 and GeMe2. The Me-for-H substituent effect varies according to reaction type and is not constant from GeH2 to MeGeH to GeMe2.

Determining rat preferences for, and behaviour towards, environmental enrichment objects allows us to provide evidence-based information about how the caged environment may be enriched. In recent years there have been many studies investigating the preferences of laboratory rodents for a wide variety of environmental enrichment objects and materials. While these have provided important information regarding the animals' perception of the items, very few studies have attempted to systematically investigate the precise attributes that constitute a preferred object and the behaviour that these objects afford. We have designed a research program to systematically study rats' motivation to interact with enrichment objects. Here we present the results from two experiments which examined the time rats spent with objects that only differed in size. This showed that rats spent longer with large objects rather than small ones, even though objects were presented individually. We also investigated the rats' behaviour with the objects in an open field and found that rats spent longer climbing on top of the large object. This behaviour continued when the large objects were laid on their sides instead of placed upright in the arena, suggesting that the rats were not simply climbing on the objects to investigate the top of the arena and thus an escape route, but instead were genuinely motivated to climb. This suggests that rat welfare could be enhanced by the addition to their cages of objects that permit climbing. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The signal transduction pathways that mediate the cardioprotective effects of ischemic preconditioning remain unclear. Here we have determined the role of a novel kinase, protein kinase D (PKD), in mediating preconditioning in the rat heart. Isolated rat hearts (n=6/group) were subjected to either: (i) 36 min aerobic perfusion (control); (ii) 20 min aerobic perfusion plus 3 min no-flow ischemia, 3 min reperfusion, 5 min no-flow ischemia, 5 min reperfusion (ischemic preconditioning); (iii) 20 min aerobic perfusion plus 200 nmol/l phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate (PMA) given as a substitute for ischemic preconditioning. The left ventricle then was excised, homogenized and PKD immunoprecipitated from the homogenate. Activity of the purified kinase was determined following bincubation with [γ32P]-ATP±syntide-2, a substrate for PKD. Significant PKD autophosphorylation and syntide-2 phosphorylation occurred in PMA-treated hearts, but not in control or preconditioned hearts. Additional studies confirmed that recovery of LVDP was greater and initiation of ischemic contracture and time-to-peak contracture were less, in ischemic preconditioned hearts compared with controls (P<0.05). Our results suggest that the early events that mediate ischemic preconditioning in the rat heart occur via a PKD-independent mechanism.

The lithic record from the Solent River and its tributaries is re-examined in the light of recent interpretations about the changing demography of Britain during the Lower and early Middle Palaeolithic. Existing models of the terrace stratigraphies in the Solent and its tributary areas are reviewed and the corresponding archaeological record (specifically handaxes) for each terrace is assessed to provide models for the relative changes in human occupation through time. The Bournemouth area is studied in detail to examine the effects of quarrying and urbanisation on collection history and on the biases it introduces to the record. In addition, the effects of reworking of artefacts from higher into lower terraces are assessed, and shown to be a significant problem. Although there is very little absolute dating available for the Solent area, a cautious interpretation of the results from these analyses would suggest a pre-Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 12 date for the first appearance of humans, a peak in population between MIS 12 and 10, and a decline in population during MIS 9 and 8. Owing to poor contextual data and small sample sizes, it is not clear when Levallois technology was introduced. This record is compared and contrasted to that from the Thames Valley. It is suggested that changes in the palaeogeography of Britain, in particular land connections to the continent, might have contributed to differences in the archaeological records from the Solent and Thames regions.

Laser flash photolysis studies of silylene, SiH2, generated by the 193 nm laser flash photolysis phenylsilane, PhSiH3, have been carried out to obtain rate constants for its bimolecular reaction with PhSiH3 itself, in the gas phase. The reaction was studied in SF6 (mostly at 10 Torr total pressure) over the temperature range 298-595 K. The rate constants (also found to be pressure independent) gave the following Arrhenius equation: log(k/cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)) = (-9.92 +/- 0.04) + (3.31 +/- 0.27) kJ mol(-1)/RT ln 10 Similar investigations of the reaction of silylene with benzene, C6H6, (295-410 K) gave data suggestive of the fact that SiH2 might be reacting with photochemical products of C6H6 as well as with C6H6 itself. However, in the latter system, apparent rate constants were sufficiently low to indicate that in the reaction of SiH2 with PhSiH3 addition to the aromatic ring was unlikely to be in excess of 3% of the total. Quantum chemical calculations of the energy surface for SiH2 + C6H6 indicate that 7-silanorcaradiene and 7-silacycloheptatriene are possible products but that PhSiH3 formation is unlikely. RRKM calculations suggest that 7-silanorcaradiene should be the initial product but that it cannot be collisionally stabilized under experimental conditions

In this paper, the Prony's method is applied to the time-domain waveform data modelling in the presence of noise. The following three problems encountered in this work are studied:(1)determination of the order of waveform;(2)de-termination of numbers of multiple roots;(3)determination of the residues. The methods of solving these problems are given and simulated on the computer. Finally,an output pulse of model PG-10N signal generator and the distorted waveform obtained by transmitting the pulse above mentioned through a piece of coaxial cable are modelled, and satisfactory results are obtained. So the effectiveness of Prony's method in waveform data modelling in the presence of noise is confirmed.

This paper investigates the effect of time offset errors on the partial parallel interference canceller (PIC) and compares the performance of it against that of the standard PIC. The BER performances of the standard and partial interference cancellers are simulated in a near far environment with varying time offset errors. These simulations indicate that whilst timing errors significantly affect the performance of both these schemes, they do not diminish the gains that are realised by the partial PIC over that of the standard PIC.

We show that an analysis of the mean and variance of discrete wavelet coefficients of coaveraged time-domain interferograms can be used as a specification for determining when to stop coaveraging. We also show that, if a prediction model built in the wavelet domain is used to determine the composition of unknown samples, a stopping criterion for the coaveraging process can be developed with respect to the uncertainty tolerated in the prediction.

This paper concerns the switching on of two-dimensional time-harmonic scalar waves. We first review the switch-on problem for a point source in free space, then proceed to analyse the analogous problem for the diffraction of a plane wave by a half-line (the ‘Sommerfeld problem’), determining in both cases the conditions under which the field is well-approximated by the solution of the corresponding frequency domain problem. In both cases the rate of convergence to the frequency domain solution is found to be dependent on the strength of the singularity on the leading wavefront. In the case of plane wave diffraction at grazing incidence the frequency domain solution is immediately attained along the shadow boundary after the arrival of the leading wavefront. The case of non-grazing incidence is also considered.

In response to increasing atmospheric con- centrations of greenhouse gases, the rate of time- dependent climate change is determined jointly by the strength of climate feedbacks and the eciency of pro- cesses which remove heat from the surface into the deep ocean. This work examines the vertical heat transport processes in the ocean of the HADCM2 atmosphere± ocean general circulation model (AOGCM) in experi- ments with CO2 held constant (control) and increasing at 1% per year (anomaly). The control experiment shows that global average heat exchanges between the upper and lower ocean are dominated by the Southern Ocean, where heat is pumped downwards by the wind- driven circulation and diuses upwards along sloping isopycnals. This is the reverse of the low-latitude balance used in upwelling±diusion ocean models, the global average upward diusive transport being against the temperature gradient. In the anomaly experiment, weakened convection at high latitudes leads to reduced diffusive and convective heat loss from the deep ocean, and hence to net heat uptake, since the advective heat input is less aected. Reduction of deep water produc- tion at high latitudes results in reduced upwelling of cold water at low latitudes, giving a further contribution to net heat uptake. On the global average, high-latitude processes thus have a controlling in¯uence. The impor- tant role of diusion highlights the need to ensure that the schemes employed in AOGCMs give an accurate representation of the relevant sub-grid-scale processes.

Amyloid fibrils resulting from uncontrolled peptide aggregation are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. Their polymorphism depends on a number of factors including pH, ionic strength, electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, hydrogen bonding, aromatic stacking interactions, and chirality. Understanding the mechanism of amyloid fibril formation can improve strategies towards the prevention of fibrillation processes and enable a wide range of potential applications in nanotemplating and nanotechnology.

Various methods of assessment have been applied to the One Dimensional Time to Explosion (ODTX) apparatus and experiments with the aim of allowing an estimate of the comparative violence of the explosion event to be made. Non-mechanical methods used were a simple visual inspection, measuring the increase in the void volume of the anvils following an explosion and measuring the velocity of the sound produced by the explosion over 1 metre. Mechanical methods used included monitoring piezo-electric devices inserted in the frame of the machine and measuring the rotational velocity of a rotating bar placed on the top of the anvils after it had been displaced by the shock wave. This last method, which resembles original Hopkinson Bar experiments, seemed the easiest to apply and analyse, giving relative rankings of violence and the possibility of the calculation of a “detonation” pressure.

A One-Dimensional Time to Explosion (ODTX) apparatus has been used to study the times to explosion of a number of compositions based on RDX and HMX over a range of contact temperatures. The times to explosion at any given temperature tend to increase from RDX to HMX and with the proportion of HMX in the composition. Thermal ignition theory has been applied to time to explosion data to calculate kinetic parameters. The apparent activation energy for all of the compositions lay between 127 kJ mol−1 and 146 kJ mol−1. There were big differences in the pre-exponential factor and this controlled the time to explosion rather than the activation energy for the process.
