A new layered ammonium manganese(II) diphosphate, (NH4)(2)[Mn-3(P2O7)(2)(H2O)(2)], has been synthesised under solvothermal conditions at 433 K in ethylene glycol and the structure determined at 293 K using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data (M-r = 584.82, monoclinic, space group P2(1)/a, a = 9.4610( 8), b = 8.3565( 7), c = 9.477(1) Angstrom, beta = 99.908(9) degrees, V = 738.07 Angstrom(3), Z = 2, R = 0.0351 and R-w = 0.0411 for 1262 observed data (I > 3(sigma(I))). The structure consists of chains of cis- and trans-edge sharing MnO6 octahedra linked via P2O7 units to form layers of formula [Mn3P4O14(H2O)(2)](2-) in the ab plane. Ammonium ions lie between the manganese-diphosphate layers. A network of interlayer and ammonium-layer based hydrogen bonding holds the structure together. Magnetic measurements indicate Curie - Weiss behaviour above 30 K with mu(eff) = 5.74(1) mu(B) and theta = -23(1) K, consistent with the presence of high-spin Mn2+ ions and antiferromagnetic interactions. However, the magnetic data reveal a spontaneous magnetisation at 5 K, indicating a canting of Mn2+ moments in the antiferromagnetic ground state. On heating (NH4)(2)[Mn-3(P2O7)(2)(H2O)(2)] in water at 433 K under hydrothermal conditions, Mn-5(HPO4)(2)(PO4)(2).4H(2)O, synthetic hureaulite, is formed.

[Cu(2-acetylpyridine)(2)]ClO4 (1), characterised here, has a novel Cu'N202 core in the solid state. Variable-temperature H-1 NMR studies show that the two chelate rings open up in solution at room temperature and the keto oxygen atoms dangle freely. As the temperature is lowered, the 0 atoms tend to bind to the metal atom. The corresponding silver(I) complex, [Ag(2-acetylpyridine)2]ClO4 (4), characterised by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, has an (AgN2)-N-I core in the solid state as well as in solution. Thus, while 1 is fluxional, 4 is not. In cyclic voltammetry, complex 1 displays a quasireversible Cu-II/I couple with a half-wave potential of 0.40 V vs. SCE. Complex I is easily oxidised by air and H2O2 in methanol to give rise to a dinuclear copper(II) complex where the ligand framework is not simple acetylpyridine. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Two mononuclear complexes of manganese(II), [Mn(OCN)(2)(phen)(2)] 1 and [Mn(NCO)(2)(bpy)(2)] 2 [1,10-phenanthroline (phen); 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy)], have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray analysis, infra-red spectroscopy and magnetic studies. The coordination structure of complex 2 is already reported. The cyanate anions are pendent in both the complexes. In 1, cyanate anion links manganese(II) through O-atom, whereas in 2 it coordinates through N-atom. The mononuclear fragments of 1 are built up to a supramolecular lamellar 3D architecture by pi-pi interactions only. On the other hand, mononuclear fragments of 2 are assembled to a 2D supramolecular brick-wall architecture by C-H-... pi interactions.

The linear isomer of dodecylbenzene (DDB), 1-phenyldodecane, was aged at temperatures of 105 and 135 degrees C in air and the resultant products were analyzed using a range of analytical techniques. On ageing, the 1-phenyldodecane darkened, the acid number, dielectric loss and water content increased and significant oxidation peaks were detected in the infrared spectrum. When aged in the presence of copper, a characteristic peak at 680 nm was also detected by UV/visible spectroscopy but, compared with previous studies of a cable-grade DDB, the strength of this peak was much increased and no appreciable precipitate formation occurred. At the same time, very high values of dielectric loss were recorded. On ageing in the absence of copper, an unusually strong infrared carbonyl band was seen, which correlates well with the detection of dodecanophenone by gas chromatography / mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. It was therefore concluded that the ageing process proceeds via the initial production of aromatic ketones, which may then be further oxidized to carboxylic acids. In the presence of copper, these oxidation products are present in lower quantities, most of these oxidation products being combined with the copper present in the oil to give copper carboxylates. The behavior is described in terms of a complex autoxidation mechanism, in which copper acts as both an oxidizing and a reducing agent, depending on its oxidation state and, in particular, promotes elimination via the oxidation of intermediate alkyl radical species to carbocations.

The hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO3)(2).6H(2)O, disodium fumarate (fum) and 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpe)/1,3-bis(4-pyridyl) propane (bpp) in aqueous-methanol medium yield one 3-D and one 2-D metal-organic hybrid material, [Ni(fum)(bpe)] (1) and [Ni(fum)(bpp)(H2O)] (2), respectively. Complex 1 possesses a novel unprecedented structure, the first example of an "unusual mode" of a five-fold distorted interpenetrated network with metal-ligand linkages where the four six-membered windows in each adamantane-type cage are different. The structural characterization of complex 2 evidences a buckled sheet where nickel ions are in a distorted octahedral geometry, with two carboxylic groups, one acting as a bis-chelate, the other as a bis-monodentate ligand. The metal ion completes the coordination sphere through one water molecule and two bpp nitrogens in cis position. Variable-temperature magnetic measurements of complexes 1 and 2 reveal the existence of very weak antiferromagnetic intramolecular interactions and/or the presence of single-ion zero field splitting (D) of isolated Ni-II ions in both the compounds. Experimentally, both the J parameters are close, comparable and very small. Considering zero-field splitting of Ni-II, the calculated D values are in agreement with values reported in the literature for Ni-II ions. Complex 3, [{Co(phen)}(2)(fum)(2)] (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) is obtained by diffusing methanolic solution of 1,10-phenanthroline on an aqueous layer of disodium fumarate and Co(NO3)(2).6H(2)O. It consists of dimeric Co-II(phen) units, doubly bridged by carboxylate groups in a distorted syn-syn fashion. These fumarate anions act as bis-chelates to form corrugated sheets. The 2D layer has a (4,4) topology, with the nodes represented by the centres of the dimers. The magnetic data were fitted ignoring the very weak coupling through the fumarate pathway and using a dimer model.

Three mu(1.5)-dicyanamide bridged Mn(II) and Co(II) complexes having molecular formula [Mn(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (1), [Co(dca)(2) (H2O)(2)](n)center dot(hmt)(n) (2) and [Co(dca)(2)(bpds)](n) (3) [dca = dicyanamide; hmt = hexamethylenetetramine; bpds = 4,4'-bipyridyl disulfide] have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction study, low temperature (300-2 K) magnetic measurement and thermal behavior. The X-ray diffraction analysis of 1 and 2 reveals that they are isostructural, comprising of 1D coordination polymers [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) [M = Mn(II), Co(II) for 1 and 2. respectively] with uncoordinated hmt molecules located among the chains. The [M(dca)(2)(H2O)(2)](n) chains and the lattice hint molecules are connected through H-bonds resulting in a 3D supramolecular architecture. The octahedral N4O2 chromophore surrounding the metal ion forms via two trans located water oxygens and four nitrogens from four nitrile dca. Complex 3 is a 1D chain formed by two mu(1.5)-dca and one bridging bpds. The octahedral N-6 coordination sphere surrounding the cobalt ions comprises four nitrogens from dca and two from bpds. Low temperature magnetic study indicates small antiferromagnetic coupling for all the complexes. Best fit parameters for 1: J = -0.17 cm(-1), g = -2.03 with R = 6.1 x 10(-4), for 2, J = -0.50 cm(-1), and for 3, J = -0.95 cm(-1). (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three new carboxylato-bridged polymeric networks of Mn-II having molecular formula [Mn(ox)(dpyo)](n) (1), {[Mn-2(mal)(2)(bpee)(H2O)(2)]center dot 0.5(bpee)center dot 0.5(CH3OH)}n, (2) and {[Mn-3(btc)(2)(2,2'-bipy)(2)(H2O)(6)]center dot 4H(2)O}(n) (3) [dpyo, 4,4'-bipyridine N,N'dioxide; bpee, trans-1,2 bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene; 2,2'-bipy, 2,2'-bipyridine; ox = oxalate dianion; mal = malonate dianion; btc = 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate trianion] have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies and low temperature magnetic measurements. Structure determination of complex I reveals a covalent bonded 2D network containing bischelating oxalate and bridging dpyo; complex 2 is a covalent, bonded 3D polymeric architecture, formed by bridging malonate and bpee ligands, resulting in an open framework with channels filled by uncoordinated disordered bpee and methanol molecules. Whereas complex 3, comprising btc anions bound to three metal centers, is a 1D chain which further extends its dimensionality to 3D via pi-pi and H-bonding interactions. Low temperature magnetic measurements reveal the existence of weak antiferromagnetic interaction in all these complexes. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2006).

Two cobalt complexes, [Co(L-Se)(phen)]center dot CH2Cl2 (1) and [Co(L-Se)(N,N-Me(2)en)(CH3COO-)] (2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic measurements, i.r. studies etc. Single crystal X- ray studies reveal that in complex (1) cobalt atom is in +2 oxidation state with trigonal bipyramidal geometry, while in complex (2) it is in +3 oxidation state and surrounded octahedrally. The asymmetric unit of complex (2) contains two crystallographically independent discrete molecules. Complex (1) was found to be paramagnetic with mu(eff) = 2.19 BM indicating a low spin cobalt(II) d(7) system, whereas complex (2) is found to be diamagnetic with cobalt(III) in low spin d(6) state. The kinetic studies on the reduction of (2) by ascorbic acid in 80% MeCN-20% H2O (v/v) at 25 degrees C reveal that the reaction proceeds through the rapid formation of inner-sphere adduct, probably by replacing the loosely coordinated AcO- group, followed by electron transfer in a slow step and is supported by a large Q (formation constant) value.

Three di-Schiff-base ligands, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine (H(2)Salpn), N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanedianiine (H(2)Salpen) and N,N'-bis(salicylidine)-ethylenediamine (H(2)Salen) react with Ni(SCN)(2). 4H(2)O in 2:3 molar ratios to form the complexes; mononuclear [Ni(HSalpn)(NCS)(H2O)]center dot H2O (1a), trinuclear [{Ni(Salpen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (2b) and trinuclear [{Ni(Salen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (3) respectively. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-VIS spectra, and room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structures of la and 2b have been confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis. In complex la, the Ni(II) atom is coordinated equatorially by the tetradentate, mononegative Schiff-base, HSalpn. Axial coordination of isothiocyanate group and a water molecule completes its octahedral geometry. The hydrogen atom attached to one of the oxygen atoms of the Schiff base is involved in a very strong hydrogen bond with a neighboring unit to form a centrosymmetric dimer. In 2b, two square planar [Ni(Salpen)] units act as bide mate oxygen donor ligands to a central Ni(II) which is also coordinated by two mutually cis N-bonded thiocyanate ligands to complete its distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 3 possesses a similar structure to that of 2b. A dehydrated form of la and a hydrated form of 2b have been obtained and characterized. The importance of electronic and steric factors in the variation of the structures is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Four trinuclear Cu(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](NO3)(2) (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2)center dot H2O (2), [(CuL3)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](I)(2) (3) and [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)][(CuI3)-I-1] (4), where HL1 (8-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one), HL2 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one] and HL3 [7-amino-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2- one] are the three tridentate Schiff bases, have been synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. All four complexes contain a partial cubane core, [(CuL)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](2+) in which the three [CuL] subunits are interconnected through two types of oxygen bridges afforded by the oxygen atoms of the ligands and the central OH- group. The copper(II) ions are in a distorted square-pyramidal environment. The equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen of the central OH- group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from the Schiff base. The oxygen atom of the Schiff base also coordinates to the axial position of Cu(II) of another subunit to form the cyclic trimer. Magnetic susceptibilities have been determined for these complexes over the temperature range of 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = -J(12)S(1)S(2) - J(13)S(1)S(3) - J(23)S(2)S(3) has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: J = - 54.98 cm(-1) g = 2.24 for 1; J = - 56.66 cm(-1), g = 2.19 for 2; J = -44.39 cm(-1), g = 2.16 for 3; J = - 89.92 cm(-1), g = 2.25 for 4. The EPR data at low temperature indicate that the phenomenon of spin frustration occurs for complexes 1-3. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Three copper(II) complexes, [CuL1], [CuL2] and [CuL3] where L-1, L-2 and L-3 are the tetradentate di-Schiff-base ligands prepared by the condensation of acetylacetone and appropriate diamines (e.g. 1,2-diaminoethane, 1,2-diaminopropane and 1,3-diaminopropane, respectively) in 2:1 ratios, have been prepared. These complexes act as host molecules and include a guest sodium ion by coordinating through the oxygen atoms to result in corresponding new trinuclear complexes, [(CuL1)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)][CuL1], [(CuL2)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)] (2) and [(CuL3)(2)Na(ClO4)(H2O)] (3) when crystallized from methanol solution containing sodium perchlorate. All three complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray crystallography. In all the complexes, the sodium cation has a six-coordinate distorted octahedral environment being bonded to four oxygen atoms from two Schiff-base complexes of Cu(II) in addition to a perchlorate anion and a water molecule. The copper atoms are four coordinate in a square planar environment being bonded to two oxygen atoms and two nitrogen atoms of the Schiff-base ligand. The variable temperature susceptibilities for complexes 1-3 were measured over the range 2-300 K. The isotropic Hamiltonian, H = g(1)beta HS1 + g(2)beta HS2 + J(12)S(1)S(2) + g(3)beta HS3 for complex 1 and H = g(1)beta HS1 + g2 beta HS2 +J(12)S(1)S(2) for complexes 2 and 3 has been used to interpret the magnetic data. The best fit parameters obtained are: g(1) = g(2) = 2.07(0), J = - 1.09(1) cm(-1) for complex 1, g(1) = g(2) = 2.06(0), J = -0.55(1) cm(-1) for complex 2 and g1 = g2 = 2.07(0).J = -0.80(1) cm(-1) for 3. Electrochemical studies displayed an irreversible Cu(II)/Cu(I) one-electron reduction process. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Three new linear trinuclear nickel(II) complexes, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OAc)(2)(H2O)(2)]center dot 4H(2)O (1) (OAc = acetate, CH3COO-), [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OBz)(2)] (2) (OBz=benzoate, PhCOO-) and [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OCn)(2)(CH3CN)(2)] (4) (OCn = cinnamate, PhCH=CHCOO-), H(2)salpen = tetradentate ligand, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanediamine have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The choice of solvent for growing single crystal was made by inspecting the morphology of the initially obtained solids with the help of SEM study. The magnetic properties of a closely related complex, [Ni-3(salpen)(2)(OPh)(2)(EtOH)] (3) (OPh = phenyl acetate, PhCH2COO-) whose structure and solution properties have been reported recently, has also been studied here. The structural analyses reveal that both phenoxo and carboxylate bridging are present in all the complexes and the three Ni(II) atoms remain in linear disposition. Although the Schiff base ligand and the syn-syn bridging bidentate mode of the carboxylate group remain the same in complexes 1-4, the change of alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylates brings about systematic variations between six- and five-coordination in the geometry of the terminal Ni(II) centres of the trinuclear units. The steric demand as well as hydrophobic nature of the alkyl/aryl group of the carboxylate is found to play a crucial role in the tuning of the geometry. Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complexes 1-4 are antiferromagnetically coupled (J = -3.2(1), -4.6(1). -3.2(1) and -2.8(1) cm(-1) in 1-4, respectively). Calculations of the zero-field splitting parameter indicate that the values of D for complexes 1-4 are in the high range (D = +9.1(2), +14.2(2), +9.8(2) and +8.6(1) cm(-1) for 1-4, respectively). The highest D value of +14.2(2) and +9.8(2) cm(-1) for complexes 2 and 3, respectively, are consistent with the pentacoordinated geometry of the two terminal nickel(II) ions in 2 and one terminal nickel(II) ion in 3. The chromium(II) antimony(III) sulphicle, [Cr((NH2CH2CH2)(3)N)]Sb4S7, was synthesised under solvothermal conditions from the reaction of Sb2S3. Cr and S dissolved in tris(2-aminoethyl)amine (tren) at 438 K. The products were characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. elemental analysis, SQUID magnetometry and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The compound crystallises in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 7.9756(7), b = 10.5191(9), c = 25.880(2) angstrom and beta = 90.864(5)degrees. Alternating SbS33- trigonal pyramids and Sb36 semi-cubes generate Sb4S72- chains which are directly bonded to Cr(tren pendant units. The effective magnetic moment of 4.94(6)mu(B) shows a negligible orbital contribution, in agreement with expectations for Cr(II):d(4) in a (5)A ground state. The measured band gap of 2.14(3) eV is consistent with a correlation between optical band gap and framework density that is established from analysis of a wide range of antimony sulphides. Four new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (1), [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](CIO4)(2) (2), [(CuL3)(3)-(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(4)center dot H2O (3), and [(CuL4)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2)center dot H2O (4), where HL1 = 8-amino-4,7,7-trimethyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL2 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one, HL3 = 7(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, and HL4 = 4-methyl-7-(methylamino)-5-azahept-3-en-2-one, have been derived from the four tridentate Schiff bases (HL1, HL2, HL3, and HL4) and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. For all compounds, the cationic part is trinuclear with a CU3OH core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The copper atoms are five-coordinate with a distorted square-pyramidal geometry; the equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen atom of the central OH group together with three atoms (N, N, O) from one ligand whereas an oxygen atom of a second ligand occupies the axial position. Magnetic measurements have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2+S2S3+S1S3) yielding as best-fit parameters: J = -66.7 and g = 2.19 for 1, J = -36.6 and g = 2.20 for 2, J = -24.5 and g = 2.20 for 3, and J = -14.9 and g = 2.05 for 4. EPR spectra at low temperature show the existence of spin frustration in complexes 3 and 4, but it has not been possible to carry out calculations of the antisymmetric exchange parameter, G, from magnetic data. In frozen methanolic solution, at 4 K, hyperfine splitting in all complexes and spin frustration in complex 4 seem to be confirmed. ((c) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The synthesis, characterisation, X-ray single crystal structures and magnetic properties of three new basal-apical mu(2)-1,1-azide-bridged complexes [(CuLN3)-N-1](2) (1), [(CuLN3)-N-2](2) (2) and [(CuLN3)-N-3](2) (3) with very similar tridentate Schiff-base blocking ligands {HL1 = N-[2-(ethylamino) ethyl] salicylaldimine; HL2 = 7-(ethylamino)-4-methyl-5-azahept-3-en-2-one; HL3 = 7-amino-4-methyl-5-azaoct-3-en-2-one} have been reported [complex 1: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.390(2), b = 7.512(2), c = 19.822(6) Angstrom, beta = 91.45(5)degrees; complex 2: monoclinic, P2(1)/c, a = 8.070(9), b = 9.787(12), c = 15.743(17) A, beta = 98.467(10)degrees; complex 3: monoclinic, P2(1)/n, a = 5.884(7), b = 16.147(18), c = 11.901(12) Angstrom, beta = 90.050(10)degrees]. The structures consist of neutral dinuclear entities resulting from the pairing of two mononuclear units through end-on azide bridges connecting an equatorial position of one copper centre to an axial position of the other, The copper ions adopt a (4+1) square-based geometry in all the complexes. In complex 2, there is no inter-dimer hydrogen-bonding. However, complexes 1 and 3 form two different supramolecular structures in which the dinuclear entities are linked by H-bonds giving one-dimensional systems. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic-susceptibility measurements and magnetisation measurements at 2 K reveal that all three complexes have antiferromagnetic coupling. Magneto-structural correlations have been made taking into consideration both the azido bridging ligands and the existence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. ((C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
