Several cis-dioxomolybdenum complexes of two tridentate ONS chelating ligands H2L1 and H2L2 ( obtained by condensation of S-benzyl and S-methyl dithiocarbazates with 2-hydroxyacetophenone) have been prepared and characterized. Complexes 1 and 2 are found to be of the form MoO2 (CH3OH)L-1.CH3OH and MoO2L, respectively, (where L2-=dianion of H2L1 and H2L2). The sixth coordination site of the complexes acts as a binding site for various neutral monodentate Lewis bases, B, forming complexes 3 - 10 of the type MoO2LB (where B=gamma-picoline, imidazole, thiophene, THF). The complexes were characterized by elemental analyses, various spectroscopic techniques, ( UV-Vis, IR and H-1 NMR), measurement of magnetic susceptibility at room temperature, molar conductivity in solution and by cyclic voltammetry. Two of the complexes MoO2(CH3OH)L-1.CH3OH (1) and MoO2L1(imz) (5) were structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Oxo abstruction reactions of 1 and 5 led to formation of oxomolybdenum(IV) complex of the MoOL type.

Solvent influences on the crystallization of polymorph and hydrate forms of the nootropic drug piracetam (2-oxo-pyrrolidineacetamide) were investigated from water, methanol, 2-propanol, isobutanol, and nitromethane. Crystal growth profiles of piracetam polymorphs were constructed using time-resolved diffraction snapshots collected for each solvent system. Measurements were performed by in situ energy dispersive X-ray diffraction recorded in Station 16.4 at the synchrotron radiation source (SRS) at Daresbury Laboratory, CCLRC UK. Crystallizations from methanol, 2-propanol, isobutanol, and nitromethane progressed in a similar fashion with the initial formation of form I which then converted relatively quickly to form II with form III being generated upon further cooling. However, considerable differences were observed for the polymorphs lifetime and both the rate and temperature of conversion using the different solvents. The thermodynamically unstable form I was kinetically favored in isobutanol and nitromethane where traces of this polymorph were observed below 10 degrees C. In contrast, the transformation of form II and subsequent growth of form III were inhibited in 2-propanol and nitromethane solutions. Aqueous solutions produced hydrate forms of piracetam which are different from the reported monohydrate; this crystallization evolved through successive generation of transient structures which transformed upon exchange of intramolecular water between the liquid and crystalline phases. Fractionation of a MeOH/CH2Cl2 (1/1) extract of the aerial parts of Senecio erechtitoides led to the isolation of six compounds including the hitherto unknown N-phenethylamide derivative named N-(p-hydroxyphenethyl)pentacosanamide (1), and a kauranoid derivative named derivative named ent-7-oxo-16 alpha,17-dihydroxykauran-19-oic acid (2), as well as four known compounds, ent-Kaur-16-en-19-oic acid (3), ent-7 beta-hydroxykaur-16-en-19-oic acid (4), ent-7-oxokaur-16-en-19-oic acid (5), steppogenin 4′-O-beta-d-glucoside (6). Their structures and relative configurations were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods, chemical reactions, and comparison with previously known analogs. All isolates were evaluated for their antimicrobial activity and only diterpenoids were found to possess a potent inhibitor effect against the range of microorganism.

The reaction of 4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one with cyanoacetamide is not confined to a 1 : 1 reaction [which results in formation of 3-cyano-6-methyl-4-phenylpyridin-2(1H)-one]. The reaction of 2 mole equivalents of 4-phenylbut-3-en-2-one with one of cyanoacetamide also takes place, the products being 1-cyano-6-hydroxy-6-methyl-4-methylene-8,9-diphenyl-3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one and 3-cyano-6-methyl-3-(3-oxo-1-phenylbutyl)-4-phenyl-3,4-dihydropyridin-2(1H)-one. The latter compound cyclises in acid medium to form 6-acetyl-4-cyano-1-methyl-5,8-diphenyl-2-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-3-one. X-Ray crystal structures of the 3-azabicyclo[3.3.1]nonan-2-one and the 3-azabicyclo[2.2.2]octan-2-one derivatives are described.

Several new coordinatively unsaturated iron(II) complexes of the types [Fe(EN-iPr)X2] (E = P, S, Se; X = Cl, Br) and [Fe(ON-iPr)2X]X containing bidentate EN ligands based on N-(2-pyridinyl)aminophosphines as well as oxo, thio, and seleno derivatives thereof were prepared and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Mössbauer spectroscopy and magnetization studies confirmed their high-spin nature with magnetic moments very close to 4.9 μB, reflecting the expected four unpaired d-electrons in all these compounds. Stable low-spin carbonyl complexes of the types [Fe(PN-iPr)2(CO)X]X (X = Cl, Br) and cis-CO,cis-Br-[Fe(PN-iPr)(CO)2X2] (X = Br) were obtained by reacting cis-Fe(CO)4X2 with the stronger PN donor ligands, but not with the weaker EN donor ligands (E = O, S, Se). Furthermore, the reactivity of [Fe(PN-iPr)X2] toward CO was investigated by IR spectroscopy. Whereas at room temperature no reaction took place, at −50 °C [Fe(PN-iPr)X2] added readily CO to form, depending on the nature of X, the mono- and dicarbonyl complexes [Fe(PN-iPr)(X)2(CO)] (X = Cl) and [Fe(PN-iPr)(CO)2X2] (X = Cl, Br), respectively. In the case of X = Br, two isomeric dicarbonyl complexes, namely, cis-CO,trans-Br-[Fe(PN-iPr)(CO)2Br2] (major species) and cis-CO,cis-Br-[Fe(PN-iPr)(CO)2Br2] (minor species), are formed. The addition of CO to [Fe(PN-iPr)X2] was investigated in detail by means of DFT/B3LYP calculations. This study strongly supports the experimental findings that at low temperature two isomeric low-spin dicarbonyl complexes are formed. For kinetic reasons cis,trans-[Fe(PN-iPr)(CO)2Br2] releases CO at elevated temperature, re-forming [Fe(PN-iPr)Br2], while the corresponding cis,cis isomer is stable under these conditions.

Three new Mn(III) complexes [MnL1(OOCH)(OH2)] (1), [MnL2(OH2)(2)][Mn2L22(NO2)(3)] (2) and [Mn2L21(NO2)(2)] (3) (where H2L1 = H(2)Me(2)Salen = 2,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazaocta-2,6-diene and H2L2 = H(2)Salpn = 1,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazahepta-1,6-diene) have been synthesized. X-ray crystal structure analysis reveals that 1 is a mononuclear species whereas 2 contains a mononuclear cationic and a dinuclear nitrite bridged (mu-1 kappa O:2 kappa O') anionic unit. Complex 3 is a phenoxido bridged dimer containing terminally coordinated nitrite. Complexes 1-3 show excellent catecholase-like activity with 3,5-di-tert-butylcatechol (3,5-DTBC) as the substrate. Kinetic measurements suggest that the rate of catechol oxidation follows saturation kinetics with respect to the substrate and first order kinetics with respect to the catalyst. Formation of bis(mu-oxo)dimanganese(III,III) as an intermediate during the course of reaction is identified from ESI-MS spectra. The characteristic six line EPR spectra of complex 2 in the presence of 3,5-DTBC supports the formation of manganese(II)-semiquinonate as an intermediate species during the catalytic oxidation of 3,5-DTBC.

Treatment of of (R,R)-N,N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine(H(2)L(1)) in methanol with aqueous NH(4)VO(3) solution in perchloric acid medium affords the mononuclear oxovanadium(V) complex [VOL(1)(MeOH)]-ClO(4) (1) as deep blue solid while the treatment of same solution of (R,R)-N,N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine(H(2)L(1)) with aqueous solution of VOSO(4) leads to the formation of di-(mu-oxo) bridged vanadium(V) complex [VO(2)L(2)](2) (2) as green solid where HL(2) = (R,R)-N-salicylidene cyclohexane 1,2-diamine. The ligand HL(2) is generated in situ by the hydrolysis of one of the imine bonds of HL(1) ligand during the course of formation of complex [VO(2)L(2)](2) (2). Both the compounds have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction as well as spectroscopic methods. Compounds 1 and 2 are to act as catalyst for the catalytic bromide oxidation and C-H bond oxidation in presence of hydrogen peroxide. The representative substrates 2,4-dimethoxy benzoic acid and para-hydroxy benzoic acids are brominated in presence of H(2)O(2) and KBr in acid medium using the above compounds as catalyst. The complexes are also used as catalyst for C-H bond activation of the representative hydrocarbons toluene, ethylbenzene and cyclohexane where hydrogen peroxide acts as terminal oxidant. The yield percentage and turnover number are also quite good for the above catalytic reaction. The oxidized products of hydrocarbons have been characterized by GC Analysis while the brominated products have been characterized by (1)H NMR spectroscopic studies.

On stirring an equimolar mixture of 4-oxo-4H-chromene-3-carbaldehyde, ninhydrin and cyclohexyl isocyanide in CH(2)Cl(2)-MeOH (7: 1) at room temperature produces 3-cyclohexylimino-1-(2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)-1,3-dihydro-9H-furo[3,4-b]chromen-9-one which on hydrolysis produces 1-(2-hydroxy-1,3-dioxo-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-2-yl)-1H-furo[3,4-b]chromene-3,9-dione. The structure of the latter compound was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction

A series of 3-oxo-C12-HSL, tetramic acid and tetronic acid analogues was synthesized to gain insights into the structural requirements for quorum sensing inhibition in Staphylococcus aureus. Compounds active against agr were non-competitive inhibitors of the auto-inducing peptide (AIP)-activated AgrC receptor, by altering the activation efficacy of the cognate AIP-1. They appeared to act as negative allosteric modulators and are exemplified by 3-tetradecanoyltetronic acid 17 which reduced nasal cell colonization and arthritis in a murine infection model.
