The ability of new hydrophobic tridentate ligands based on 2,6-bis(benziinidazol-2-yl)pyridine, 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine and 2,6-bis(benzothiazol-2-yl)pyridine to selectively extract americium(III) from europium(III) was measured. The most promising ligand-2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)-4-(2-decyl-1-tetradecyloxy)pyridine L-9 was found to give separation factors (SFAm/Eu) of up to 70 when used to extract cations from 0.02-0.10 M HNO3 into TPH in synergy with 2-bromodecanoic acid. Six structures of lanthanide complexes with 2,6-bis(benzoxazol-2-yl)pyridine L-6 were then determined to evaluate the types of species that are likely to be involved in the separation process. Three structural types were observed, namely [LnL(6)(NO3)(3)(H2O)2], 11-coordinate only for La, [LnL(6) (NO3)(3) (CH3CN)], 10-coordinate for Pr, Nd and Eu and [LnL(6) (NO3)(3)(H2O)], L 10-coordinate for Eu and Gd. Quantum Mechanics calculations were carried out on the tridentate ligands to elucidate the conformational preferences of the ligands in the free state and protonated and diprotonated forms and to assess the electronic properties of the ligands for comparison with other terdentate ligands used in lanthanide/actinide separation processes.

The extracting agent 2,6-bis(4,6-di-pivaloylamino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-pyridine (L-5) in n-octanol was found, in synergy with 2-bromodecanoic acid, to give D-Am/D-Eu separation factors (SFs) between 2.4 and 3.7 when used to extract the metal ions from 0.02-0.12 M HNO3. Slightly higher SFs (4-6) were obtained in the absence of the synergist when the ligand was used to extract Am(III) and Eu(III) from 0.98 M HNO3. In order to investigate the possible nature of the extracted species crystal structures of L-5 and the complex formed between Yb(III) with 2,6-bis(4,6-di-amino-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)-pyridine (L-4) were also determined. The structure of L-5 shows 3 methanol solvent molecules all of which form 2 or 3 hydrogen bonds with triazine nitrogen atoms, amide nitrogen or oxygen atoms, or pyridine nitrogen atoms. However, L-5 is relatively unstable in metal complexation reactions and loses amide groups to form the parent tetramine L-4. The crystal structure of Yb(L-4)(NO3)(3) shows ytterbium in a 9-coordinate environment being bonded to three donor atoms of the ligand and three bidentate nitrate ions. The solvent extraction properties of L-4 and L-5 are far inferior to those found for the 2,6-bis-(1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-pyridines (L-1) which have SF values of ca. 140 and theoretical calculations have been made to compare the electronic properties of the ligands. The electronic charge distribution in L-4 and L-5 is similar to that found in other terdentate ligands such as terpyridine which have equally poor extraction properties and suggests that the unique properties of L-1 evolve from the presence of two adjacent nitrogen atoms in the triazine rings.

Quantitative structure activity relationships (QSARs) have been developed to optimise the choice of nitrogen heterocyclic molecules that can be used to separate the minor actinides such as americium(III) from europium(III) in the aqueous PUREX raffinate of nuclear waste. Experimental data on distribution coefficients and separation factors (SFs) for 47 such ligands have been obtained and show SF values ranging from 0.61 to 100. The ligands were divided into a training set of 36 molecules to develop the QSAR and a test set of 11 molecules to validate the QSAR. Over 1500 molecular descriptors were calculated for each heterocycle and the Genetic Algorithm was used to select the most appropriate for use in multiple regression equations. Equations were developed fitting the separation factors to 6-8 molecular descriptors which gave r(2) values of >0.8 for the training set and values of >0.7 for the test set, thus showing good predictive quality. The descriptors used in the equations were primarily electronic and steric. These equations can be used to predict the separation factors of nitrogen heterocycles not yet synthesised and/or tested and hence obtain the most efficient ligands for lanthanide and actinide separation. Recently the BTBP-family of solvating ligands have been studied for their ability to separate trivalent actinides from lanthanides. Five of the BTBPs were evaluated for their ability to extract nickel(II) from aqueous nitrate media into cyclohexanone. It was shown by both solvent extraction and X-ray diffraction experiments that the BTBPs are capable of forming both 1: 1 and 1:2 complexes with nickel(II). When the BTBP concentration is low the nickel distribution ratio is governed by the formation of the nickel/BTBP complex while at higher BTBP concentrations the partitioning of the nickel complex between the two phases dictates the nickel distribution ratio.

The partitioning of minor trivalent actinides (An) from lanthanides (Ln) is one of the challenges in the chemical treatment of nuclear waste. The optimal ligand to carry out the separation of An(III) and Ln(III) using solvent extraction has to meet several important criteria: high selectivity towards the solute, chemical and radiolytic stability, stripping possibilities and recycling of the organic phase, high separation factors and good distribution ratio, to name just a few of them. A chronological line can be drawn along the development of each extraction ligand family and some milestones are emphasized in this overview. Further developments in organic synthesis of extracting ligands are expected.

Two new cadmium (II) complexes [Cd(hmt)(dca)(2)] (n) (1) and [Cd-3(hmt)(2)(SeCN)(6)(H2O)(2)] (n) (2) (hmt=hexamethylenetetramine, dca=dicyanamide) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The complex 1 is a 2D rectangular grid of octahedral cadmium (II) with CdN6 chromophore where cadmium centers are doubly bridged by dicyanamide and hmt along a-axis, which are interlinked by dicyanamide running along c-axis. Whereas, complex 2 is a 1D chain of octahedral cadmium (II) with a three-leg ladder topology running along a-axis. The Cd(II) centers are doubly bridged through SeCN (infinite rail) along a-axis and singly bridged by hmt (two-step rung) along c-axis, having cadmium centers with CdSe2N3O and CdSe2N4 chromophores. The adjacent chains through H-bonding between coordinated water and hmt, and (SeSe)-Se-... interaction are extended to 2D supramolecular architecture.

In the title family, the ONO donor ligands are the acetylhydrazones of salicylaidehyde (H2L1) and 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L2) (general abbreviation, H2L). The reaction of bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) with a mixture of tridentate H2L and a bidentate NN donor [e.g., 2,2'-bipyridine(bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline(phen), hereafter B] ligands in equimolar ratio afforded the tetravalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)]; complexes (1)-(4) whereas, if B is replaced by 8-hydroxyquinoline(Hhq) (which is a bidentate ON donor ligand), the above reaction mixture yielded the pentavalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)]; complexes (5) and (6). Aerial oxygen is most likely the oxidant (for the oxidation of V-IV -> V-V) in the synthesis of pentavalent complexes (5) and (6). [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)] complexes are one electron paramagnetic and display axial EPR spectra, while the [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes are diamagnetic. The X-ray structure of [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(hq)] (6) indicates that H2L2 ligand is bonded with the vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its phenolic-O, enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The general bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. The V-O (enolato) bond is longer than V-O (phenolato) bond by similar to 0.07 angstrom and is identical with V-O (carboxylate) bond. H-1 NMR spectrum of (6) in CDCl3 solution indicates that the binding nature in the solid state is also retained in solution. Complexes (1)(4) display two ligand-field transitions in the visible region near 820 and 480 nm in DMF solution and exhibit irreversible oxidation peak near +0.60 V versus SCE in DMSO solution, while complexes (5) and (6) exhibit only LMCT band near 535 nm and display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. The VO3+-VO2+ E-1/2 values shift considerably to more negative values when neutral NN donor is replaced by anionic ON donor species and it also provides better VO3+ binding via phenolato oxygen. For a given bidentate ligand, E-1/2 increases in the order: (L-2)(2-) < (L-1)(2-). (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The coordination chemistry of iso-butyramide based ligands such as: (C3H7CON)-C-i((C3H7)-C-i)(2), (C3H7CON)-C-i(C4H9)(2) and (C3H7CON)-C-i((C4H9)-C-i)(2) with [UO2(NO3)(2) center dot 6H(2)O], [UO2(OO)(2) center dot 2H(2)O] {where OO = C4H3SCOCHCCCF3 (TTA), C6H5COCHCOCF3 (BTA) and C6H5COCHCOC6H5 (DBM)), [Th(NO3)(4) center dot 6H(2)O] and [La(NO3)(3) center dot 6H(2)O] has been evaluated. Structures for the compounds [UO2(NO3)(2)CC3H7CON{(C4H9)-C-i}(2))(2)] and [UO2(C6H5COCHCOC6H5)(2)((C3H7CON)-C-i{(C3H7)-C-i)(2))] have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Preliminary separation studies from nitric acid medium using the amide (C3H7CON)-C-i((C4H9)-C-i)(2) with U(VI), Th(IV) and La(Ill) ions showed the selective precipitation of uranyl ion from the mixture. Thermal study of the compound [UO2(NO3)(2)((C3H7CON)-C-i((C4H9)-C-i)(2))(2)] in air revealed that the ligands can be destroyed completely on incineration. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two new metal-organic based polymeric complexes, [Cu-4(O2CCH2CO2)(4)(L)].7H(2)O (1) and [CO2(O2CCH2CO2)(2)(L)].2H(2)O (2) [L = hexamethylenetetramine (urotropine)], have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystal structure determination and magnetic studies. Complex 1 is a 1D coordination polymer comprising a carboxylato, bridged Cu-4 moiety linked by a tetradentate bridging urotropine. Complex 2 is a 3D coordination polymer made of pseudo-two-dimensional layers of Co(II) ions linked by malonate anions in syn-anticonformation which are bridged by bidentate urotropine in trans fashion, Complex 1 crystallizes in the orthothombic system, space group Pmmn, with a = 14,80(2) Angstrom, b = 14.54(2) Angstrom, c = 7.325(10) Angstrom, beta = 90degrees, and Z = 4. Complex 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, space group Imm2, a = 7.584(11) Angstrom, b = 15.80(2) Angstrom, c = 6.939(13) Angstrom, beta = 90.10degrees(1), and Z = 4. Variable temperature (300-2 K) magnetic behavior reveals the existence of ferro- and antiferromagnetic interactions in 1 and only antiferromagnetic interactions in 2. The best fitted parameters for complex 1 are J = 13.5 cm(-1), J = -18.1 cm(-1), and g = 2.14 considering only intra-Cu-4 interactions through carboxylate and urotropine pathways. In case of complex 2, the fit of the magnetic data considering intralayer interaction through carboxylate pathway as well as interlayer interaction via urotropine pathway gave no satisfactory result at this moment using any model known due to considerable orbital contribution of Co(II) ions to the magnetic moment and its complicated structure. Assuming isolated Co(II) ions (without any coupling, J = 0) the shape of the chi(M)T curve fits well with experimental data except at very low temperatures.

Two vanadium(V) complexes, [VO(L-1)]acac)] (1) and [VO(L-2)(acac)] (2), where H2L1 = N,N-bis(2-hydroxy-3-5-di-tert-butyl-benzyl)propylamine and H2L2 = 2,2'-selenobis(4,6-di-tert-butylphenol), have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, V-51 NMR, both in the solid and in solution, and cyclic voltammetric studies. Single crystal X-ray studies reveal that in complex 1 the vanadium atom is octahedrally coordinated with an O5N donor environment, where the oxygen atom of the V-V=O moiety and the N atom of the ONO ligand occupy the axial sites while two oxygen atoms (O1 and O2) from the bisphenolate ligand and two oxygen atoms (O3 and O4) from the acac ligand occupy the equatorial plane. A similar bonding pattern has also been encountered for 2 with the exception that a Se atom instead of N is involved in weak bonding to the metal center. Both complexes showed reversible cyclic voltammeric responses and E-1/2 appears at -0.18 and 0.10 V versus NHE for complexes 1 and 2, respectively. The kinetics of oxidation of ascorbic acid by complex 1 were carried out in 50% MeCN-50% HO (v/v) at 25 degrees C. The high formation constant value, Q = 63 +/- 7 M-1, reveals that the reaction proceeds through the rapid formation of a H-bonded intermediate. The low k(2)Q(2)/k(1)Q(1) ratio (13.4) for 1 points out that there is extensive H-bonding between the oxygen atom of the V-V=O group and the OH group of ascorbic acid. The reaction between [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)(NCMe)(2)Br] (1) and the ferrocenylamidobenzimidazole ligands FcCO(NH(2)benzim) (L1) and (FcCO)(2)(NHbenzim) (L2) led to a binuclear (2) and a trinuclear (3) Mo-Fe complex, respectively. The single-crystal X-ray structure of [Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)(L2)Br] [L2 = {[(eta(5)-C5H5)Fe(eta(5)-C5H4CO)](2)(2-NH-benzimidazol-yl)}] shows that L2 is coordinated to the endo Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2) group in a kappa(2)-N,O-bidentate chelating fashion whereas the Mo-II centre displays a pseudooctahedral environment with Br occupying an equatorial position. Complex 2 was formulated as [MO(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)(L1)Br] on the basis of a combination of spectroscopic data, elemental analysis, conductivity and DFT calculations. L1 acts as a kappa(2)-N,N-bidentate ligand. In both L1 and L2, the HOMOs are mainly localised on iron while the C=O bond(s) contribute to the LUMO(s) and the next highest energy orbitals are Fe-allyl antibonding orbitals. When the ligands bind to Mo(eta(3)-C3H5)(CO)(2)Br, the greatest difference is that Mo becomes the strongest contributor to the HOMO. Electrochemical studies show that, in complex 2, no electronic interaction exists between the two ferrocenyl ligands and that the first electron has been removed from the Mo-II-centred HOMO. Two cobalt complexes, [Co(L-Se)(phen)]center dot CH2Cl2 (1) and [Co(L-Se)(N,N-Me(2)en)(CH3COO-)] (2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic measurements, i.r. studies etc. Single crystal X- ray studies reveal that in complex (1) cobalt atom is in +2 oxidation state with trigonal bipyramidal geometry, while in complex (2) it is in +3 oxidation state and surrounded octahedrally. The asymmetric unit of complex (2) contains two crystallographically independent discrete molecules. Complex (1) was found to be paramagnetic with mu(eff) = 2.19 BM indicating a low spin cobalt(II) d(7) system, whereas complex (2) is found to be diamagnetic with cobalt(III) in low spin d(6) state. The kinetic studies on the reduction of (2) by ascorbic acid in 80% MeCN-20% H2O (v/v) at 25 degrees C reveal that the reaction proceeds through the rapid formation of inner-sphere adduct, probably by replacing the loosely coordinated AcO- group, followed by electron transfer in a slow step and is supported by a large Q (formation constant) value.

[(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] reacts with an equimolar amount of benzoyl hydrazones of 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L1), 2-hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone (H2L2) and 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L4) in methanol to afford the penta-coordinated mixed-ligand methoxy bonded oxidovanadium(V) complexes [(VO)-O-V(L-1)-(OCHA(3))](1). [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)](2), and [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(OCH3)](4), respectively, whereas, the similar reaction with the benzoyl hydrazone of 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone (H2L3) producing only the hexa-coordinated dimethoxy-bridged dimeric complex [(VO)-O-V(L-3)(OCH3)](2) (3A). Similar type of hexa-coordinated dimeric analogue of 1 i.e., [(VO)-O-V(L-1)(OCH3)](2) (1A) was obtained from the reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)(2)] with the equimolar amount of H2L1 in presence of half equivalent 4,4'-bipyridine in methanol while the decomposition of [(VO)-O-IV(L-2)(bipy)] complex in methanol afforded the dimeric analogue of 2 i.e., [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)](2) (2A). All these dimeric complexes 1A-3A react with an excess amount of imidazole in methanol producing the respective monomeric complex. The X-ray structural analysis of 1-3 and their dimeric analogues 1A-3A indicates that the geometry around the vanadium center in the monomeric form is distorted square-pyramidal while that of their respective dimeric forms is distorted octahedral, where the ligands are bonded to vanadium meridionally in their fully deprotonated enol forms. Due to the formation of bridge, the V-O(methoxy) bond in the dimeric complexes is lengthened to such an extent that it becomes equal in length with the V-O(phenolate) bond in 3A and even longer in 1A and 2A, which is unprecedented. The H-1 NMR spectra of the complexes 1A-3A in CDCl3 solution, indicates that these dimeric complexes are converted appreciably into their respective monomeric form. Complexes are electro-active displaying one quasi-reversible reduction peak near +0.25 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. The E-1/2 values of the complexes show linear relationship with the Hammett parameter (sigma) of the substituents. All these VO3+-complexes are converted to the corresponding complexes with V2O34+ motif simply on refluxing them in acetone and to the complexes with VO2+ motif on reaction with 2 KOH in methanol. [VIVO(acac)(2)] reacts with an equimolar amount of benzoyl hydrazone of 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L1) or 5-chloro-2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L2) in the presence of excess pyridine (py) in methanol to produce the quaternary [(VO)-O-V(L-1)(OCH3)(py)] (1) and [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(OCH3)(py)] (2) complexes, respectively, while under similar condition, the benzoyl hydrazones of 2-hydroxy-5-methylacetophenone (H2L3) and 2-hydroxy-5-methoxyacetophenone (H2L4) afforded only the methoxy bridged dimeric [(VO)-O-V(L-3/L-4)(OCH3)](2) complexes. The X-ray structural analysis of 1 and 2 indicates that the geometry around the metal is distorted octahedral where the three equatorial positions are occupied by the phenolate-O, enolate-O and the imine-N of the fully deprotonated hydrazone ligand in its enolic form and the fourth one by a methoxide-O atom. An oxo-O and a pyridine-N atom occupy two axial positions. Quaternary complexes exhibit one quasi-reversible one-electron reduction peak near 0.25 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 and they decompose appreciably to the corresponding methoxy bridged dimeric complex in CDCl3 solution as indicated by their H-1 NMR spectra. These quaternary VO3+ complexes are converted to the corresponding V2O34+-complexes simply on refluxing them in acetone and to the VO2+-complexes on reaction with KOH in methanol. An equimolar amount of 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq) converts these quaternary complexes to the ternary [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes in CHCl3. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Three di-Schiff-base ligands, N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-propanediamine (H(2)Salpn), N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,3-pentanedianiine (H(2)Salpen) and N,N'-bis(salicylidine)-ethylenediamine (H(2)Salen) react with Ni(SCN)(2). 4H(2)O in 2:3 molar ratios to form the complexes; mononuclear [Ni(HSalpn)(NCS)(H2O)]center dot H2O (1a), trinuclear [{Ni(Salpen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (2b) and trinuclear [{Ni(Salen)}(2)Ni(NCS)(2)] (3) respectively. All the complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses, IR and UV-VIS spectra, and room temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. The structures of la and 2b have been confirmed by X-ray single crystal analysis. In complex la, the Ni(II) atom is coordinated equatorially by the tetradentate, mononegative Schiff-base, HSalpn. Axial coordination of isothiocyanate group and a water molecule completes its octahedral geometry. The hydrogen atom attached to one of the oxygen atoms of the Schiff base is involved in a very strong hydrogen bond with a neighboring unit to form a centrosymmetric dimer. In 2b, two square planar [Ni(Salpen)] units act as bide mate oxygen donor ligands to a central Ni(II) which is also coordinated by two mutually cis N-bonded thiocyanate ligands to complete its distorted octahedral geometry. Complex 3 possesses a similar structure to that of 2b. A dehydrated form of la and a hydrated form of 2b have been obtained and characterized. The importance of electronic and steric factors in the variation of the structures is discussed. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
