The diazirine functionalised fluorenone, 3-[3-(trifluoromethyl)diazirin-3-yl]phenyl-9-oxo-9H-fluorene-2-carboxyla te was synthesised to act as a model compound capable of modifying a wide variety of polymeric substrates. Photochemical activation of the diazirine moiety of the fluorenone derivative was utilised to afford highly reactive carbenes capable of insertion into or addition to a wide variety of functionalities. In this paper the photoinduced attachment of a fluorenone derivative to nylon 6,6 has been studied using UV-visible spectroscopic analysis. Incorporation of the fluorenone chromophore onto the backbone of nylon at different loading levels and after different coating cycles has been investigated and is detailed in this paper.

The AB, monomer, 3,5-bis(3-hydroxylprop-1-ynyl)benzoic acid 1, has been synthesized using a Sonogashira cross-coupling with a palladium catalyst system developed for use with deactivated aryl halides. Numerous condensation methods have then been assessed in the homopolymerization of the acid-diol monomer 1 to afford hyperbranched polyesters. However, as a result of the thermal instability of the monomer, direct thermal polymerizations could not be employed. Alternative approaches using carbodiimide-coupling reagents enabled the production of soluble polyesters possessing molecular weights and degrees of branching ranging from 2500 to 11,000 and 0.22 to 0.33, respectively. A novel diazirine functionalised aniline derivative, 3-(3-aminophenyl)-3-methyldiazirine 1, was prepared and employed as an AB(2)-type monomer in the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers; thus providing the first instance in which polyamines have been prepared via carbene insertion polymerisation. Photolysis of the monomer 1 in bulk and in solution resulted in the formation of hyperbranched poly(aryl amine)s with degrees of polymerisation (DP) varying from 9 to 26 as determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). In solution, an increase in the initial monomer concentration was generally found to result in a decrease in the molecular weight characteristics of the resulting poly(aryl amine) s. Subsequent thermal treatment of the poly(aryl amine) s caused a further increase in the DP values up to a maximum of 31. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic analysis revealed that the increase in molecular weight upon thermal treatment resulted from hydroamination of styrenic species formed in the initial photopolymerisation or activation of diazirine moieties.

Many different reagents and methodologies have been utilised for the modification of synthetic and biological macromolecular systems. In addition, an area of intense research at present is the construction of hybrid biosynthetic polymers, comprised of biologically active species immobilised or complexed with synthetic polymers. One of the most useful and widely applicable techniques available for functionalisation of macromolecular systems involves indiscriminate carbene insertion processes. The highly reactive and non-specific nature of carbenes has enabled a multitude of macromolecular structures to be functionalised without the need for specialised reagents or additives. The use of diazirines as stable carbene precursors has increased dramatically over the past twenty years and these reagents are fast becoming the most popular photophors for photoaffinity labelling and biological applications in which covalent modification of macromolecular structures is the basis to understanding structure-activity relationships. This review reports the synthesis and application of a diverse range of diazirines in macromolecular systems.

A novel supramolecular polymer system, in which the terminal pyrenyl groups of a polyamide intercalate into the chain-folds of a polyimide via electronically-complementary pi-pi stacking, shows both enhanced mechanical properties relative to those of its individual components and facile healing characteristics as a result of the thermoreversibility of non-covalent interactions.

Utilising supramolecular pi-pi stacking interactions to drive miscibility in two-component polymer blends offers a novel approach to producing materials with unique properties. We report in this paper the preparation of a supramolecular polymer network that exploits this principle. A low molecular weight polydiimide which contains multiple pi-electron-poor receptor sites along its backbone forms homogeneous films with a siloxane polymer that features pi-electron-rich pyrenyl end-groups. Compatibility results from a complexation process that involves chain-folding of the polydiimide to create an optimum binding site for the pi-electron-rich chain ends of the polysiloxane. These complementary pi-electron-rich and -poor receptors exhibit rapid and reversible complexation behaviour in solution, and healable characteristics in the solid state in response to temperature. A mechanism is proposed for this thermoreversible healing behaviour that involves disruption of the intermolecular pi-pi stacking cross-links as the temperature of the supramolecular film is increased. The low T-g siloxane component can then flow and as the temperature of the blend is decreased, pi-pi stacking interactions drive formation of a new network and so lead to good damage-recovery characteristics of the two-component blend.

A novel, pyrene-functionalised copolymer has been synthesised in a single step via imidisation of poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene) with 1-pyrenemethylamine, and its potential for the detection of volatile nitro aromatic compounds (NACs) evaluated. The new copolymer forms complexes in solution with NACs such as 2,5-dinitrobenzonitrile, as shown by H-1 NMR, UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Moreover, thin films of this copolymer, cast from THF solution, undergo almost instantaneous fluorescence quenching when exposed to the vapour of 2,5-dinitrobenzonitrile (a model for TNT) at ambient temperatures and pressures.

A new macroporous stationary phase bearing 'tweezer' receptors that exhibit specificity for cholesterol has been constructed from rigid multifunctional vinylic monomers derived from 3,5-dibromobenzoic acid, propargyl alcohol and cholesterol. The synthesis of the novel tweezer monomer that contains two cholesterol receptor arms using palladium mediated Sonogashira methodologies and carbonate couplings is reported. The subsequent co-polymerisation of this tweezer monomer with a range of cross-linking agents via a 'pseudo' molecular imprinting approach afforded a diverse set of macroporous materials. The selectivity and efficacy of these materials for cholesterol binding was assessed using a chromatographic screening process. The optimum macroporous stationary phase material composition was subsequently used to construct monolithic solid phase extraction columns for use in the selective extraction of cholesterol from multi-component mixtures of structurally related steroids.

Novel non-toxic poly(ethylene glycol)-supported 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) moieties are demonstrated to give an excellent interfacial catalysis for the selective oxidation of alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl species in biphasic media and investigation for the recovery of these new macromolecular catalysts via precipitation with diethyl ether after catalysis has also been briefly studied.

Nitroxyl radicals such as 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) are highly selective oxidation catalysts for the conversion of primary alcohols into the corresponding aldehydes. In this study, direct tethering of TEMPO units onto linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has afforded macromolecular catalysts that exhibit solubility in both aqueous and organic solvents. Recovery of the dissolved polymer-supported catalyst has been carried out by precipitation with a suitable solvent such as diethyl ether. The high catalyst activities and selectivities associated traditionally with nitroxyl-mediated oxidations of alcohols are retained by the series of "linker-less" linear PEG-TEMPO catalysts in which the TEMPO moiety is coupled directly to the PEG support. Although the selectivity remains unaltered, upon recycling of the linker-less polymer-supported catalysts, extended reaction times are required to maintain high yields of the desired carbonyl compounds. Alternatively, attachment of two nitroxyl radicals onto each functionalized PEG chain terminus via a 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid linker affords branched polymer-supported catalysts. In stark contrast to the linker-less catalysts, these branched nitroxyls exhibit catalytic activities up to five times greater than 4-methoxy-TEMPO alone under similar conditions. In addition, minimal decrease in catalytic activity is observed upon recycling of these branched macromolecular catalysts via solvent-induced precipitation. The high catalytic activities and preservation of activity upon recycling of these branched systems is attributed to enhanced regeneration of the nitroxyl species as a result of intramolecular syn-proportionation.

A high pressure mediated (3+2) cycloaddition polymerization strategy has been employed to afford linear poly(isoxazolidine) architectures. Under these high pressure conditions this cycloaddition process was found to afford primarily endoheterocycles which when translated to the polymerization should ultimately affect the tacticity and resultant properties of the polymer. The stereoselectivity occurred as a result of a lower volume of activation for the endo-transition state and the application of a 'type-I' regime (HOMODipole-LUMODipolarophile) cycloaddition process that features secondary orbital interactions within the extended molecular orbitals. A variety of linker segments were employed in an attempt to affect the physical properties of the polymeric cycloadducts such as T-g and solubility in order to tailor these materials for use in coating applications. Cycloaddition reactions have been employed in polymer synthesis since the mid-nineteen sixties. This critical review will highlight recent notable advances in this field. For example, [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions have been utilized in numerous polymerizations to enable the construction of strained polymer systems such as poly(2-azetidinone)s that can, in turn, afford polyfunctional beta-amino acid derived polymers. Polymers have also been synthesized successfully via (3 + 2) cycloaddition methods utilizing both thermal and high-pressure conditions. 'Click chemistry'-a process involving the reaction of azides with olefins, has also been adopted to generate linear and hyperbranched polymer architectures in a very efficient manner. [4 + 2] Cycloadditions have also been utilized under thermal and high-pressure conditions to produce rigid polymers such as polyimides and polyphenylenes. These cycloaddition polymerization methods afford polymers with potential for use in high performance polymers applications such as high temperature resistant coatings and polymeric organic light emitting diodes.

Novel 'tweezer-type' complexes that exploit the interactions between pi-electron-rich pyrenyl groups and pi-electron deficient diimide units have been designed and synthesised. The component molecules leading to complex formation were accessed readily from commercially available starting materials through short and efficient syntheses. Analysis of the resulting complexes, using the visible charge-transfer band, revealed association constants that increased sequentially from 130 to 11,000 M-1 as increasing numbers of pi-pi-stacking interactions were introduced into the systems. Computational modelling was used to analyse the structures of these complexes, revealing low-energy chain-folded conformations for both components, which readily allow close, multiple pi-pi-stacking and hydrogen bonding to be achieved. In this paper, we give details of our initial studies of these complexes and outline how their behaviour could provide a basis for designing self-healing polymer blends for use in adaptive coating systems. A series of fourteen novel pyrrole monomers substituted at the 3-position with aliphatic and aromatic crown-ether moieties have been synthesised in good yield and characterised extensively. Several of these compounds were electropolymerised successfully in acetonitrile, using both potentiostatic and galvanostatic modes and the electrochemical properties of those systems were studied via cyclic voltammetry in aqueous and organic media. Novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives revealed reversible redox couples in LiClO4/CH3CN (0.1 M). The morphology of these novel crown-ether substituted polypyrrole derivatives was characterised by scanning electron microscopy. These polymers exhibited an open porous structure and half the charge was required when compared to polypyrrole to afford films of equal thickness. The mass change during polymerisation was followed by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance measurement, and the rate of polymer growth was found to be nonlinear when compared to polypyrrole.
