This paper investigates whether bank integration measured by cross-border bank flows can capture the co-movements across housing markets in developed countries by using a spatial dynamic panel model. The transmission can occur through a global banking channel in which global banks intermediate wholesale funding to local banks. Changes in financial conditions are passed across borders through the banks’ balance-sheet exposure to credit, currency, maturity, and funding risks resulting in house price spillovers. While controlling for country-level and global factors, we find significant co-movement across housing markets of countries with proportionally high bank integration. Bank integration can better capture house price co-movements than other measures of economic integration. Once we account for bank exposure, other spatial linkages traditionally used to account for return co-movements across region – such as trade, foreign direct investment, portfolio investment, geographic proximity, etc. – become insignificant. Moreover, we find that the co-movement across housing markets decreases for countries with less developed mortgage markets characterized by fixed mortgage rate contracts, low limits of loan-to-value ratios and no mortgage equity withdrawal.

The co-adsorption of CO and O on the unreconstructed (1 x 1) phase of Ir {100} was examined by low energy electron diffraction (LEED) and temperature programmed desorption (TPD). When CO is adsorbed at 188 K onto the Ir{100} surface precovered with 0.5 ML O, a mixed c(4 x 2)-(2O + CO) overlayer is formed. All CO is oxidised upon heating and desorbs as CO2 in three distinct stages at 230 K, 330 K and 430 K in a 2:1:2 ratio. The excess oxygen left on the surface after all CO has reacted forms an overlayer with a LEED pattern with p(2 x 10) periodicity. This overlayer consists of stripes with a local p(2 x 1)-O arrangement of oxygen atoms separated by stripes of uncovered It. When CO is adsorbed at 300 K onto the surface precovered with 0.5 ML O an apparent (2 x 2) LEED pattern is observed. LEED IV analysis reveals that this pattern is a superposition of diffraction patterns from islands of c(2 x 2)-CO and p(2 x 1)-O structures on the surface. Heating this co-adsorbed overlayer leads to the desorption of CO, in two stages at 330 K and 430 K; the excess CO (0.1 ML) desorbs at 590 K. LEED IV structural analysis of the mixed c(4 x 2) O and CO overlayer shows that both the CO molecules and the O atoms occupy bridge sites. The O atoms show significant lateral displacements of 0.14 angstrom away from the CO molecules; the C-O bond is slightly expanded with respect to the gas phase (1.19 angstrom); the modifications of the Ir substrate with respect to the bulk-terminated surface are very small. Two cobalt complexes, [Co(L-Se)(phen)]center dot CH2Cl2 (1) and [Co(L-Se)(N,N-Me(2)en)(CH3COO-)] (2) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, magnetic measurements, i.r. studies etc. Single crystal X- ray studies reveal that in complex (1) cobalt atom is in +2 oxidation state with trigonal bipyramidal geometry, while in complex (2) it is in +3 oxidation state and surrounded octahedrally. The asymmetric unit of complex (2) contains two crystallographically independent discrete molecules. Complex (1) was found to be paramagnetic with mu(eff) = 2.19 BM indicating a low spin cobalt(II) d(7) system, whereas complex (2) is found to be diamagnetic with cobalt(III) in low spin d(6) state. The kinetic studies on the reduction of (2) by ascorbic acid in 80% MeCN-20% H2O (v/v) at 25 degrees C reveal that the reaction proceeds through the rapid formation of inner-sphere adduct, probably by replacing the loosely coordinated AcO- group, followed by electron transfer in a slow step and is supported by a large Q (formation constant) value.

Background: High rates of co-morbidity between Generalized Social Phobia (GSP) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) have been documented. The reason for this is unclear. Family studies are one means of clarifying the nature of co-morbidity between two disorders. Methods: Six models of co-morbidity between GSP and GAD were investigated in a family aggregation study of 403 first-degree relatives of non-clinical probands: 37 with GSP, 22 with GAD, 15 with co-morbid GSP/GAD, and 41 controls with no history of GSP or GAD. Psychiatric data were collected for probands and relatives. Mixed methods (direct and family history interviews) were utilised. Results: Primary contrasts (against controls) found an increased rate of pure GSP in the relatives of both GSP probands and co-morbid GSP/GAD probands, and found relatives of co-morbid GSP/GAD probands to have an increased rate of both pure GAD and comorbid GSP/GAD. Secondary contrasts found (i) increased GSP in the relatives of GSP only probands compared to the relatives of GAD only probands; and (ii) increased GAD in the relatives of co-morbid GSP/GAD probands compared to the relatives of GSP only probands. Limitations: The study did not directly interview all relatives, although the reliability of family history data was assessed. The study was based on an all-female proband sample. The implications of both these limitations are discussed. Conclusions: The results were most consistent with a co-morbidity model indicating independent familial transmission of GSP and GAD. This has clinical implications for the treatment of patients with both disorders. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All fights reserved.

A combination of photoelectron spectroscopy, temperature programmed desorption and low energy electron diffraction structure determinations have been applied to study the p(2 x 2) structures of pure hydrogen and co-adsorbed hydrogen and CO on Ni {111}. In agreement with earlier work atomic hydrogen is found to adsorb on fcc and hcp sites in the pure layer with H-Ni bond lengths of 1.74Angstrom. The substrate interlayer distances, d(12) = 2.05Angstrom and d(23) = 2.06Angstrom, are expanded with respect to clean Ni {111} with buckling of 0.04Angstrom in the first layer. In the co-adsorbed phase Co occupies hcp sites and only the hydrogen atoms on fcc sites remain on the surface. d(12) is even further expanded to 2.08Angstrom with buckling in the first and second layer of 0.06 and 0.02Angstrom, respectively. The C-O, C-Ni, and H-Ni bond lengths are within the range of values also found for the pure adsorbates.

Treatment of the labile cluster [Os3(CO)11(MeCN)] with PH3 affords the substituted product [Os3(CO)11(PH3)](1) in high yield. Subsequent reaction of (1) with Na2CO3 in MeOH, followed by acidification, gives the hydrido phosphido cluster [Os3(µ-H)(CO)10(µ-PH2)](2). When (2) is heated to 45–60 °C in the presence of [Os3(CO)11(MeCN)] a hexanuclear complex with the formulation [Os6(µ-H)2(CO)21(µ3-PH)](3) is obtained. If this reaction is repeated using [Os3(CO)10(MeCN)2] instead of [Os3(CO)11(MeCN)], an acetonitrile-containing product, [Os6(µ-H)2(CO)20(MeCN)(µ3-PH)](4), is obtained. An X-ray analysis of (4) shows that two Os3 triangular units are linked by a µ3-phosphinidene ligand, which symmetrically bridges an Os–Os edge of one triangle and is terminally co-ordinated to one Os atom of the second triangle. When (3) is treated with a weak base, such as [N(PPh3)2]Cl or [PPh3Me] Br, deprotonation to the corresponding cluster monoanion [Os6(µ-H)(CO)21(µ3-PH)]–(5) occurs. Treatment of (5) with a weak acid regenerates (3) in quantitative yield. Thermolysis of (3) leads to a closing up of the metal framework, affording the cluster [Os6(µ-H)(CO)18(µ6-P)], which readily deprotonates to give the anion [Os6(CO)18(µ6-P)]–(7) in the presence of [N(PPh3)2] Cl or [PPh3Me]Br. The same anion (7) may also be obtained by direct thermolysis of (5). An X-ray analysis of the [PPh3Me]+ salt of (7) confirms that the phosphorus occupies an interstitial site in a trigonal-prismatic hexaosmium framework, and co-ordinates to all six metal atoms with an average Os–P distance of 2.31 (1)Å. Proton and 31P n.m.r. data on all the new clusters are presented, and the position of the phosphorus resonance in the 31P n.m.r. spectrum is related to the changes in the environment of the phosphorus atom.

The political response to the complex package of environmental problems which threaten the future of our planet has been to introduce a new agenda of environmental action based on the principles of sustainability and subsidiarity. This has been crystallised in world agreements signed at the Earth Summit in Rio. One of these, Agenda 21, calls for the governments and communities of the world to prepare action plans for their areas which can build consensus between the various stakeholder groups and feed the principles of sustainable development back into their policies and day-to-day practices. This paper explores the experience of Local Agenda 21 type processes at three levels in the South East of England: the regional, county (sub-regional) and local level. In particular it undertakes a critical appraisal of the success of these participatory and consensus-building exercises in developing an integrated and co-ordinated approach to environmental action planning. It concludes that, although much useful work has been done in raising awareness and modifying policy and practice, there are significant cultural and institutional barriers which are hindering progress.

The atmospheric composition of the central North Atlantic region has been sampled using the FAAM BAe146 instrumented aircraft during the Intercontinental Transport of Ozone and Precursors (ITOP) campaign, part of the wider International Consortium for Atmospheric Research on Transport and Transformation (ICARTT). This paper presents an overview of the ITOP campaign. Between late July and early August 2004, twelve flights comprising 72 hours of measurement were made in a region from approximately 20 to 40°W and 33 to 47°N centered on Faial Island, Azores, ranging in altitude from 50 to 9000 m. The vertical profiles of O3 and CO are consistent with previous observations made in this region during 1997 and our knowledge of the seasonal cycles within the region. A cluster analysis technique is used to partition the data set into air mass types with distinct chemical signatures. Six clusters provide a suitable balance between cluster generality and specificity. The clusters are labeled as biomass burning, low level outflow, upper level outflow, moist lower troposphere, marine and upper troposphere. During this summer, boreal forest fire emissions from Alaska and northern Canada were found to provide a major perturbation of tropospheric composition in CO, PAN, organic compounds and aerosol. Anthropogenic influenced air from the continental boundary layer of the USA was clearly observed running above the marine boundary layer right across the mid-Atlantic, retaining high pollution levels in VOCs and sulfate aerosol. Upper level outflow events were found to have far lower sulfate aerosol, resulting from washout on ascent, but much higher PAN associated with the colder temperatures. Lagrangian links with flights of other aircraft over the USA and Europe show that such signatures are maintained many days downwind of emission regions. Some other features of the data set are highlighted, including the strong perturbations to many VOCs and OVOCs in this remote region.

A soil (sandy loam) column leaching study aimed to determine the extent of mobility and co-mobility of Cu, Ni, Zn and dissolved organic matter (DOM) released from a surface-application (equivalent to 50 t ds ha(-1)) of anaerobically-digested sewage sludge. Leaching of DOM through It the soil column was found to be almost un-retarded. Decidedly similar behaviour was exhibited by Ni suggesting that it migrated as organic complexes. Whilst Cu was also found to be leached, significant retardation was evident. However, the importance of DOM in promoting the mobility of both Cu and Ni was evidenced by their lack of mobility when added to the soil column as inorganic forms. The presence of DOM did not prevent Zn from becoming completely adsorbed by the soil solid phase. In relation to WHO drinking water guidelines, only Ni concentrations showed potential environmental significance. due to the relatively poor retention of Ni by the sludge solid phase. Mineral and geochemical investigations were carried out on soil samples and fresh rock (trachytes) from two selected soil profiles (TM profile on leptic aluandic soils and TL profile on thapto aluandic-ferralsols) from Mount Bambouto to better understand geochemical processes and mineral paragenesis involved in the development of soils in this environment. In TM profile, the hydrated halloysites and goethite occur in the weathered saprolite boulders of BC horizon while dehydrated halloysite, gibbsite and goethite dominate the soils matrices of BC and A horizons. In TL profile, the dehydrated halloysites and goethite are the most abundant secondary minerals in the weathered saprolites of C and BC horizons while gibbsite, hematite and kaolinite occur in the soil matrices of BC, B and A horizons. The highest gibbsite content is in the platy nodules of B horizon. In both soil profiles, organo-metal complexes (most likely of AI and Fe) are present in the surface A horizon. Geochemically, between the fresh rock and the weathered saprolites in both soils, SiO2, K2O, CaO, Na2O and MgO contents decrease strongly while Fe2O3 and Al2O3 tend to accumulate. The molar ratio of SiO2/Al2O3 (Ki) and the sum of Ca, Mg, K and Na ions (TRB) also decreases abruptly between fresh rocks and the weathered saprolites, but increases significantly at the soil surface. The TM profile shows intense Al enrichment whereas the TL profile highlights enrichment in both AI and Fe as the weathering progresses upwards. Both soil profiles are enriched in Ni, Cu, Ba and Co and depleted in U, Th, Ta, Hf, Y, Sr, Pb, Zr and Zn relative to fresh rock. They also show a relatively low fractionation of the rare earth elements (REE: La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb and Lu), except for Ce which tends to be enriched in soils compared to CI chondrite. All these results give evidence of intense hydrolysis at soil deep in Mount Bambouto resulting in the formation of halloysite which progressively transforms into gibbsite and/or dehydrated halloysite. At the soil surface, the prominent pedogenetic process refers to andosolization with formation of organo-metal complexes. In TL profile, the presence of kaolinite in soil matrices BC and B horizons is consistent with ferralitization at soil deep. In conclusion, soil forming processes in Mount Bambouto are strongly influenced by local climate: (i) in the upper mountain (>2000 m), the fresh, misty and humid climate favors andosolization; whereas (ii) in the middle lands (1700-2000 m) with a relatively dry climate, both andosolization at the soil surface and ferralitization at soil deep act together. Two linear, trinuclear mixed-valence complexes, [Co-II{(mu-L-1)(mu-OAc)Co-III (OAc)}(2)] (1) and [Co-II(mu-L-2) (mu-OAc)Co-III(OAc)}(2)] (2) and two mononuclear Con' complexes [Co-III{L-3)(OAc)] (3), and [Co-III {L-4}(OAc)] (4) were prepared and the molecular structures of 1, 2 and 4 elucidated on the basis of X-ray crystallography [OAc = Acetate ion, H2L1 = H(2)Salen 1,6-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,5-diazahexa-1,5-diene, H2L2 H2Me2-Salen = 2,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazaocta-2,6-diene, H2L3 = H(2)Salpn = 1,7-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)-2,6-diazahepta1,6-diene, H2L4 = H(2)Me(2)Salpn = 2,8-bis(2-hydroxyphenyl)3,7-diazanona-2,7-dienel. In complexes I and 2, the acetate groups show both monodentate and bridging bidentate coordination modes, whereas chelating bidentate acetate is present in 4. The terminal (CoN2O4)-N-III centres in 1 and 2 exhibit uniform facial arrangements of both non-bridged N2O and bridging O-3 donor sets and the Co-II centre is coordinated to six (four phenoxo and two acetato) oxygen atoms of the bridging ligands. The effective magnetic moment at room temperature corresponds to the presence of high-spin Coll in both 1 and 2. The complexes 1 and 2 are thus Co-III(S = 0)Co-II(S = 3/2)-Co-II(S = 0) trimers. Complexes 3 and 4 are monomeric and diamagnetic containing low-spin Co-III(S = 0) with chelating tetradentate Schiff base and bidentate acetate. Calculations based on DFT rationalise the formation of trinuclear or monomiclear complexes. (C) Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, 69451 Weinheim, Germany, 2008).
Synergetic effects of the Cu/Pt{110} surface alloy: enhanced reactivity of water and carbon monoxide
Resumo:
We have used synchrotron-based high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in combination with ab initio density functional theory calculations to investigate the characteristics of water and CO adsorption on the bimetallic Cu/Pt{110}-(2 x 1) surface at a Cu coverage near 0.5 ML. Cu fills the troughs of the reconstructed clean surface forming nanowires, which are stable up to 830 K. Their presence dramatically influences the adsorption of water and CO. Water adsorption changes from intact to partially dissociated while the desorption temperature of CO on this surface increases by up to 27 K with respect to the clean Pt{110} surface. Ab initio calculations and experimental valence band spectra reveal that the Cu 3d-band is narrowed and shifted upward with respect to bulk Cu surfaces. This and electron donation to surface Pt atoms cause the increase in the bond strength between CO and the Pt surface atoms. The pathway for water dissociation occurs via Cu surface atoms. The heat of adsorption of water bonding to Cu surface atoms was calculated to be 0.82 eV, which is significantly higher than on the clean Pt{110} surface; the activation energy for partial dissociation is 0.53 eV (not corrected for zero point energy).

Background Little is known about the relative effects of exposure to postnatal depression and parental conflict on the social functioning of school-aged children. This is, in part, because of a lack of specificity in the measurement of child and parental behaviour and a reliance on children's reports of their hypothetical responses to conflict in play. Methods In the course of a prospective longitudinal study of children of postnatally depressed and well women, 5-year-old children were videotaped at home with a friend in a naturalistic dressing-up play setting. As well as examining possible associations between the occurrence of postnatal depression and the quality of the children's interactions, we investigated the influence of parental conflict and co-operation, and the continuity of maternal depression. The quality of the current mother-child relationship was considered as a possible mediating factor. Results Exposure to postnatal depression was associated with increased likelihood, among boys, of displaying physical aggression in play with their friend. However, parental conflict mediated the effects of postnatal depression on active aggression during play, and was also associated with displays of autonomy and intense conflict. While there were no gender effects in terms of the degree or intensity of aggressive behaviours, girls were more likely to express aggression verbally using denigration and gloating whereas boys were more likely to display physical aggression via interpersonal and object struggles. Conclusions The study provided evidence for the specificity of effects, with strong links between parental and child peer conflict. These effects appear to arise from direct exposure to parental conflict, rather than indirectly, through mother-child interactions.
