The synthesis and extraction of americium(III) and europium(III) from aqueous nitric acid solutions by the new BTBP ligands 6,6’-bis(5,5,7,7- tetramethyl-5,7-dihydrofuro[3,4-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2’-bipyridine (Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP), and 6,6’-bis(5,5,7,7-tetramethyl-5,7-dihydrothieno[3,4-e]-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)- 2,2’-bipyridine (Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP) is described. The affinity for Am(III) and the selectivity for Am(III) over Eu(III) of Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP were generally higher than for Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP. For both ligands, the extraction of Am(III) and Eu(III) from 3 M HNO3 into 3 mM organic solutions varied with the diluent used. The highest distribution ratios and separation factors observed were in cyclohexanone and 2-methylcyclohexanone, respectively. For Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP, there is a strong correlation between the distribution ratio for Am(III) and the permittivity of the diluent used. With 1-octanol as the diluent, low distribution ratios (D(Am) < 1) were observed for Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP although this ligand extracts Am(III) selectively (SFAm/Eu = 16-46 from 1-4 M HNO3). For Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP, Am(III) is extracted as the disolvate. The distribution ratios for Am(III), and the separation factors for Am(III) over Eu(III) are both significantly higher for CyMe4-BTBP than they are for Cy5-O-Me4-BTBP and Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP in cyclohexanone. Changing the diluent from cyclohexanone to 2-methylcyclohexanone leads to a decrease in D(Am) but an increase in SFAm/Eu for Cy5-S-Me4-BTBP.

The importance of aerosol emissions for near term climate projections is investigated by analysing simulations with the HadGEM2-ES model under two different emissions scenarios: RCP2.6 and RCP4.5. It is shown that the near term warming projected under RCP2.6 is greater than under RCP4.5, even though the greenhouse gas forcing is lower. Rapid and substantial reductions in sulphate aerosol emissions due to a reduction of coal burning in RCP2.6 lead to a reduction in the negative shortwave forcing due to aerosol direct and indirect effects. Indirect effects play an important role over the northern hemisphere oceans, especially the subtropical northeastern Pacific where an anomaly of 5-10\,Wm$^{-2}$ develops. The pattern of surface temperature change is consistent with the expected response to this surface radiation anomaly, whilst also exhibiting features that reflect redistribution of energy, and feedbacks, within the climate system. These results demonstrate the importance of aerosol emissions as a key source of uncertainty in near term projections of global and regional climate.

Six-week-old lambs were inoculated orally with 10(9) cfu of an antibiotic-resistance marked four-strain mixture of enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli (EHEC) O157:H7 to investigate faecal excretion and intestinal colonisation. In the first experiment, three E. coli O157:H7 isolates were not detected in the faeces of any lambs beyond day 8 post inoculation (pi), or from any of the tissues derived from inoculated animals. One strain, 140065 Nal(r), was isolated from the caecum and colon of one lamb on day 9 pi, from the rectum of another on day 22 pi and persisted in the faeces for up to 28 days pi. All animals remained clinically normal throughout the study period and histological evidence of adhesion of E. coli O157:H7 to the intestinal mucosa was not found. In a separate experiment, four 6-week-old lambs were inoculated orally with 10(9) efu of E. coli O157:H7 strain 140065 Nal(r) alone. Faecal samples were positive for this strain until the end of the experiment (day 19 pi). This strain was also recovered from the gastrointestinal tract of lambs on days 6, 18 and 19 pi, but was not isolated at day 17 pi. When sampled separately, rectum and terminal colon contents contained higher numbers of the inoculated strain than the intestinal tissue at these sites. Animals inoculated with O157:117 strain 140065 Nal(r) alone produced soft faeces from day 5 pi onwards. Although attaching and effacing lesions were observed in the caecum, proximal colon and rectum in one animal on day 18 pi, the adherent bacteria did not stain with antiserum raised against the O157 antigen.

The recommendation to reduce saturated fatty acid (SFA) consumption to ≤10% of total energy (%TE) is a key public health target aimed at lowering cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Replacement of SFA with unsaturated fats may provide greater benefit than replacement with carbohydrates, yet the optimal type of fat is unclear. The aim was to develop a flexible food-exchange model to investigate the effects of substituting SFAs with monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) or n-6 (ω-6) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) on CVD risk factors. In this parallel study, UK adults aged 21-60 y with moderate CVD risk (50% greater than the population mean) were identified using a risk assessment tool (n = 195; 56% females). Three 16-wk isoenergetic diets of specific fatty acid (FA) composition (%TE SFA:%TE MUFA:%TE n-6 PUFA) were designed using spreads, oils, dairy products, and snacks as follows: 1) SFA-rich diet (17:11:4; n = 65); 2) MUFA-rich diet (9:19:4; n = 64); and 3) n-6 PUFA-rich diet (9:13:10; n = 66). Each diet provided 36%TE total fat. Dietary targets were broadly met for all intervention groups, reaching 17.6 ± 0.4%TE SFA, 18.5 ± 0.3%TE MUFA, and 10.4 ± 0.3%TE n-6 PUFA in the respective diets, with significant overall diet effects for the changes in SFA, MUFA, and n-6 PUFA between groups (P < 0.001). There were no differences in the changes of total fat, protein, carbohydrate, and alcohol intake or anthropometric measures between groups. Plasma phospholipid FA composition showed changes from baseline in the proportions of total SFA, MUFA, and n-6 PUFA for each diet group, with significant overall diet effects for total SFA and MUFA between groups (P < 0.001). In conclusion, successful implementation of the food-exchange model broadly achieved the dietary target intakes for the exchange of SFA with MUFA or n-6 PUFA with minimal disruption to the overall diet in a free-living population.
