Critical micelle concentrations (cmc) of aqueous solutions of poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) were determined at several temperatures by surface tensiometry. Below the lower critical solution temperature (LCST), the low Delta(mic) H-0 determined can be assigned to the PMMA block being tightly coiled in the dispersed molecular state, so that the unfavorable interactions of hydrophobic entities with water are minimized. Above the LCST the cmc value was found to increase; an anomalous behavior that can be directly related to the micelle-globule transition of the hydrophilic block. Interestingly, above the LCST the surface tension of relatively concentrated solutions was found to depend weakly on temperature not following the usual strong decrease with temperature expected for aqueous solutions. The results of an experimental study into the oxidative degradation of proxies for atmospheric aerosol are presented. We demonstrate that the laser Raman tweezers method can be used successfully to obtain uptake coeffcients for gaseous oxidants on individual aqueous and organic droplets, whilst the size and composition of the droplets is simultaneously followed. A laser tweezers system was used to trap individual droplets containing an unsaturated organic compound in either an aqueous or organic ( alkane) solvent. The droplet was exposed to gas- phase ozone and the reaction kinetics and products followed using Raman spectroscopy. The reactions of three different organic compounds with ozone were studied: fumarate anions, benzoate anions and alpha pinene. The fumarate and benzoate anions in aqueous solution were used to represent components of humic- like substances, HULIS; a alpha- pinene in an alkane solvent was studied as a proxy for biogenic aerosol. The kinetic analysis shows that for these systems the diffusive transport and mass accommodation of ozone is relatively fast, and that liquid- phase di. ffusion and reaction are the rate determining steps. Uptake coe. ffcients, g, were found to be ( 1.1 +/- 0.7) x 10(-5), ( 1.5 +/- 0.7) x 10 (-5) and ( 3.0 - 7.5) x 10 (-3) for the reactions of ozone with the fumarate, benzoate and a- pinene containing droplets, respectively. Liquid- phase bimolecular rate coe. cients for reactions of dissolved ozone molecules with fumarate, benzoate and a- pinene were also obtained: k(fumarate) = ( 2.7 +/- 2) x 10 (5), k(benzoate) = ( 3.5 +/- 3) x 10 (5) and k(alpha-pinene) = ( 1-3) x 10(7) dm(3) mol (-1) s (- 1). The droplet size was found to remain stable over the course of the oxidation process for the HULIS- proxies and for the oxidation of a- pinene in pentadecane. The study of the alpha- pinene/ ozone system is the first using organic seed particles to show that the hygroscopicity of the particle does not increase dramatically over the course of the oxidation. No products were detected by Raman spectroscopy for the reaction of benzoate ions with ozone. One product peak, consistent with aqueous carbonate anions, was observed when following the oxidation of fumarate ions by ozone. Product peaks observed in the reaction of ozone with alpha- pinene suggest the formation of new species containing carbonyl groups.

Oxymyoglobin in aqueous extracts of fresh beef longissimus dorsi muscles was initially oxidised to metmyoglobin during heat treatments at temperatures in the range 50-70 degreesC. The metmyoglobin then underwent reduction to a red pigment that was shown spectrally to be identical to oxymyoglobin. The formation of oxymyoglobin involved a heat induced precipitate that when removed from the solution, allowed oxidation to metmyoglobin to occur. However, on re-addition of the precipitate further reduction to oxymyoglobin took place. Dialysis of the muscle extract prior to heating markedly inhibited the reduction but addition of NADH to the dialysate permitted further reduction. The precipitate plus NADH caused oxymyoglobin formation in the presence of metmyoglobin but neither the precipitate nor NADH alone induced this formation. It is concluded that the initial conversion of oxymyoglobin to metmyoglobin on heating fresh beef muscle extracts was reversible and that the reverse reaction depended on the presence of both NADH and a muscle protein.

Regular consumption of green tea polyphenols (GTP) is thought to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but has also been associated with liver toxicity. The present trial aimed to assess the safety and potential CVD health beneficial effects of daily GTP consumption. We conducted a placebo-controlled parallel study to evaluate the chronic effects of GTP on liver function and CVD risk biomarkers in healthy men. Volunteers (treatment: n = 17, BMI 26.7 +/- 3.3 kg/m(2), age 41 +/- 9 y; placebo, n = 16, BMI 25.4 +/- 3.3 kg/m(2), age 40 +/- 10 y) consumed for 3 wk 6 capsules per day (2 before each principal meal) containing green tea extracts (equivalent to 714 mg/d GTP) or placebo. At the beginning and end of the intervention period, we collected blood samples from fasting subjects and measured vascular tone using Laser Doppler lontophoresis. Biomarkers of liver function and CVD risk (including blood pressure, plasma lipids, and asymmetric dimethylarginine) were unaffected by GTP consumption. After treatment, the ratio of total:HDL cholesterol was significantly reduced in participants taking GTP capsules compared with baseline. Endothelial-dependent and -independent vascular reactivity did not significantly differ between treatments. In conclusion, the present data suggests that the daily consumption of high doses of GTP by healthy men for 3 wk is safe but without effects on CVD risk biomarkers other than the total:HDL cholesterol ratio. The phase separation behaviour in aqueous mixtures of poly(methyl vinyl ether) and hydroxypropylcellulose has been studied by cloud points method and viscometric measurements. The miscibility of these blends in solid state has been assessed by infrared spectroscopy; methanol vapours sorption experiments and scanning electron microscopy. The values of Gibbs energy of mixing of the polymers and their blends with methanol as well as between each other were calculated. It was found that in solid state the polymers can interact with methanol very well but the polymer-polymer interactions are unfavourable. Although in aqueous solutions the polymers exhibit some intermolecular interactions their solid blends are not completely miscible. (C) 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The interactions between hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) and poly(acrylic acid) (PAA) as well as poly(methacrylic acid) (PMMA) resulting in formation of hydrophobic interpolymer complexes (IPC) via hydrogen bonding have been studied in aqueous solutions in acidic medium. The formation of IPC of two different compositions (2:1 and 4:1) has been detected for complexes of PAA and HPMC. The critical pH values for complexation of HPMC with PAA and PMAA were determined by the turbidimetric method. It was found that PAA shows the lower complexation ability compared to PMAA due to the more hydrophobic nature of the latter polyacid. The temperature-induced phase separation in HPMC-PAA solution mixtures depends greatly on the components ratio and PAA molecular weight. The complexation ability of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose with respect to poly(acrylic acid) was found to be similar to the complexation ability of methylcellulose, lower than that of hydroxypropylcellulose and higher than that of hydroxyethylcellulose. The introduction of ionic single-tailed surfactants to aqueous solutions of EO18BO10 [EO = poly(ethylene oxide), BO = poly(1,2-butylene oxide), subscripts denote the number of repeating units] leads to the formation of vesicles, as probed by laser scanning confocal microscopy. Dynamic light scattering showed that the dimensions of these aggregates at early stages of development do not depend on the sign of the surfactant head group charge. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) analysis indicated the coexistence of smaller micelles of different sizes and varying polymer content in solution. In strong contrast to the dramatic increase of size of dispersed particles induced by surfactants in dilute solution, the d-spacing of corresponding mesophases reduces monotonically upon increasing surfactant loading. This effect points to the suppression of vesicles as a consequence of increasing ionic strength in concentrated solutions. Maximum enhancements of storage modulus and thermal stability of hybrid gels take place at different compositions, indicating a delicate balance between the number and size of polymer-poor aggregates (population increases with surfactant loading) and the number and size of polymer−surfactant complexes (number and size decrease in high surfactant concentrations).

A radionuclide source term model has been developed which simulates the biogeochemical evolution of the Drigg low level waste (LLW) disposal site. The DRINK (DRIgg Near field Kinetic) model provides data regarding radionuclide concentrations in groundwater over a period of 100,000 years, which are used as input to assessment calculations for a groundwater pathway. The DRINK model also provides input to human intrusion and gaseous assessment calculations through simulation of the solid radionuclide inventory. These calculations are being used to support the Drigg post closure safety case. The DRINK model considers the coupled interaction of the effects of fluid flow, microbiology, corrosion, chemical reaction, sorption and radioactive decay. It represents the first direct use of a mechanistic reaction-transport model in risk assessment calculations.

An aqueous solution of a poly(ethylene glycol)-polycaprolactone-poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG-PCL-PEG) with a composition of EG13CL23EG13 undergoes multiple transitions, from sol-to-gel (hard gel)-to-sol-to-gel (soft gel)-to-sol, in the concentration range 20.0∼35.0 wt.-%. Through dynamic mechanical analysis, UV-vis spectrophotometry, small angle X-ray scattering, differential scanning calorimetry, microcalorimetry and 13C NMR spectroscopy, the mechanism of these transitions was investigated. The hard gel and soft gel are distinguished by the crystalline and amorphous state of the PCL. The extent of PEG dehydration and the molecular motion of each block also played a critical role in the multiple transitions. This paper suggests a new mechanism for these multiple transitions driven by temperature changes.

In the present paper, we studied the preparation of biomimetic triblock copolymer (ABA) membranes in aqueous solution and their deposition into solid supports. The self-assembly structures of the ABA in aqueous solution was investigated by using optical microscopy, dynamic light scattering, electron microscopy (EM) and SAXS. Spherical and tubular polymersomes were found at the highest concentrations investigated. The mechanism of deposition on solid supports (mica and glass) was elucidated by using atomic force microscopy (AFM). The deposition results in the formation of a uniform defect-free membrane at suitable polymer concentrations.

The heterogeneous solid catalyst, mercaptopropylsilica (MPS), has been prepared by a modified procedure in water and its structure confirmed by solid state carbon-13 CP-MAS NMR spectrum. This catalyst has been efficiently utilized for the synthesis of a wide variety of tri-, tetrasubstituted imidazoles and their bis-analogues at room temperature. The protocol was further explored for the synthesis of the drug trifenagrel.

MD simulation studies showing the influence of porosity and carbon surface oxidation on phenol adsorption from aqueous solutions on carbons are reported. Based on a realistic model of activated carbon, three carbon structures with gradually changed microporosity were created. Next, a different number of surface oxygen groups was introduced. The pores with diameters around 0.6 nm are optimal for phenol adsorption and after the introduction of surface oxygen functionalities, adsorption of phenol decreases (in accordance with experimental data) for all studied models. This decrease is caused by a pore blocking effect due to the saturation of surface oxygen groups by highly hydrogen-bounded water molecules.

We report the results of first systematic studies of organic adsorption from aqueous solutions onto relatively long single walled carbon nanotubes (four tubes, in initial and oxidised forms). Using molecular dynamics simulations (GROMACS package) we discuss the behaviour of tube-water as well as tube-adsorbate systems, for three different adsorbates (benzene, phenol and paracetamol).
