[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCOXH)(H2O)] and PMePh3[MoO(O-2)(2)(PyCO)] (PyCOXH = Pyridine-2-carboxaldoxime and PyCOH = Pyridine-2-carboxylic acid) have been synthesized. Both complexes have been characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods; in addition, the carboxylate complex has been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. The carboxylate complex is a more efficient catalyst than the oxime complex for epoxidation of olefins and shows excellent catalytic activity for the substrates: cyclooctene, cinnamyl alcohol, allyl alcohol and 1-hexene.

Two new cadmium (II) complexes [Cd(hmt)(dca)(2)] (n) (1) and [Cd-3(hmt)(2)(SeCN)(6)(H2O)(2)] (n) (2) (hmt=hexamethylenetetramine, dca=dicyanamide) have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray single-crystal analysis. The complex 1 is a 2D rectangular grid of octahedral cadmium (II) with CdN6 chromophore where cadmium centers are doubly bridged by dicyanamide and hmt along a-axis, which are interlinked by dicyanamide running along c-axis. Whereas, complex 2 is a 1D chain of octahedral cadmium (II) with a three-leg ladder topology running along a-axis. The Cd(II) centers are doubly bridged through SeCN (infinite rail) along a-axis and singly bridged by hmt (two-step rung) along c-axis, having cadmium centers with CdSe2N3O and CdSe2N4 chromophores. The adjacent chains through H-bonding between coordinated water and hmt, and (SeSe)-Se-... interaction are extended to 2D supramolecular architecture.

Two mononuclear complexes of manganese(II), [Mn(OCN)(2)(phen)(2)] 1 and [Mn(NCO)(2)(bpy)(2)] 2 [1,10-phenanthroline (phen); 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy)], have been synthesized and characterized by single crystal X-ray analysis, infra-red spectroscopy and magnetic studies. The coordination structure of complex 2 is already reported. The cyanate anions are pendent in both the complexes. In 1, cyanate anion links manganese(II) through O-atom, whereas in 2 it coordinates through N-atom. The mononuclear fragments of 1 are built up to a supramolecular lamellar 3D architecture by pi-pi interactions only. On the other hand, mononuclear fragments of 2 are assembled to a 2D supramolecular brick-wall architecture by C-H-... pi interactions.

Asymmetric synthesis of densely functionalized bicyclic frameworks for entry into bacillariolides I/III and ent-bacillariolide II is reported. The key features are ring-closing metathesis of a pair of diastereomerically related dienes obtained through a stereodivergent route from a R-(+)-glyceraldehyde derivative, transformation of a nonstereoselective cyclopentene ester enolate alkylation process to a completely stereoselective one through alkylation of a bulky ester enolate with a bulky electrophile, and a remote silyloxymethyl group directed epoxidation.

In the title family, the ONO donor ligands are the acetylhydrazones of salicylaidehyde (H2L1) and 2-hydroxyacetophenone (H2L2) (general abbreviation, H2L). The reaction of bis(acetylacetonato)oxovanadium(IV) with a mixture of tridentate H2L and a bidentate NN donor [e.g., 2,2'-bipyridine(bpy) or 1,10-phenanthroline(phen), hereafter B] ligands in equimolar ratio afforded the tetravalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)]; complexes (1)-(4) whereas, if B is replaced by 8-hydroxyquinoline(Hhq) (which is a bidentate ON donor ligand), the above reaction mixture yielded the pentavalent complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)]; complexes (5) and (6). Aerial oxygen is most likely the oxidant (for the oxidation of V-IV -> V-V) in the synthesis of pentavalent complexes (5) and (6). [(VO)-O-IV(L)(B)] complexes are one electron paramagnetic and display axial EPR spectra, while the [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] complexes are diamagnetic. The X-ray structure of [(VO)-O-V(L-2)(hq)] (6) indicates that H2L2 ligand is bonded with the vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its phenolic-O, enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The general bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. The V-O (enolato) bond is longer than V-O (phenolato) bond by similar to 0.07 angstrom and is identical with V-O (carboxylate) bond. H-1 NMR spectrum of (6) in CDCl3 solution indicates that the binding nature in the solid state is also retained in solution. Complexes (1)(4) display two ligand-field transitions in the visible region near 820 and 480 nm in DMF solution and exhibit irreversible oxidation peak near +0.60 V versus SCE in DMSO solution, while complexes (5) and (6) exhibit only LMCT band near 535 nm and display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. The VO3+-VO2+ E-1/2 values shift considerably to more negative values when neutral NN donor is replaced by anionic ON donor species and it also provides better VO3+ binding via phenolato oxygen. For a given bidentate ligand, E-1/2 increases in the order: (L-2)(2-) < (L-1)(2-). (c) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Four tridentate dibasic ONO donor hydrazone ligands derived from the condensation of benzoylhydrazine with either 2-hydroxyacetophenone or its para substituted derivatives (H2L1-4, general abbreviation H2L) have been used as primary ligands and 8-hydroxyquinoline (Hhq, a bidentate monobasic ON donor species) has been used as auxiliary ligand. The reaction of [(VO)-O-IV(acac)21 with H2L in methanol followed by the addition of Hhq in equimolar ratio under aerobic condition afforded the mixed-ligand oxovanadium(V) complexes of the type [(VO)-O-V(L)(hq)] (1-4) in excellent yield. The X-ray structure of the compound [(VO)-O-V(L-4)(hq)] (4) indicates that the H2L4 ligand is bonded with vanadium meridionally in a tridentate dinegative fashion through its deprotonated phenolic-O, deprotonated enolic-O and imine-N atoms. The V-O bond length order is: oxo < phenolato < enolato. H-1 NMR spectra of 4 in CDCl3 solution indicates that it's solid-state structure is retained in solution. Complexes are diamagnetic and exhibit only ligand to metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition band near 530 nm in CH2Cl2 solution in addition to intra-ligand pi-pi* transition band near 335 rim and they display quasi-reversible one electron reduction peak near -0.10 V versus SCE in CH2Cl2 solution. lambda(max) (for LMCT transition) and the reduction peak potential (E-p(c)) values of the complexes are found to be linearly related with the Hammett (sigma) constants of the substituents in the aryloxy ring of the hydrazone ligands. lambda(max) and E-p(c) values show large dependence d lambda(max)/d sigma = 32.54 nm and dE(p)(c)/d sigma = 0.19 V, respectively, on the Hammett constant. New N-(3-aminopropyl) (L-1, L-2) and (2-cyanoethyl) (L-3, L-4) derivatives of a 14-membered tetraazamacrocycle containing pyridine have been synthesized. The protonation constants of L-1 and L-2 and the stability constants of their complexes with Ni2+, Cu2+, Zn2+ and Cd2+ metal ions were determined in aqueous solutions by potentiometry, at 298.2 K and ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in KNO3. Both compounds have high overall basicity due to the presence of the aminopropyl arms. Their copper(II) complexes exhibit very high stability constants, which sharply decrease for the complexes of the other studied metal ions, as usually happens with polyamine ligands. Mono- and dinuclear complexes are formed with L-2 as well as with L-1, but the latter exhibits mononuclear complexes with slightly higher K-ML values while the dinuclear complexes of L-2 are thermodynamically more stable. The presence of these species in solution was supported by UV-VIS-NIR and EPR spectroscopic data. The single crystal structures of [Cu(H2L2)(ClO4)](3+) and [(CoLCl)-Cl-3](+) revealed that the metal centres are surrounded by the four nitrogen atoms of the macrocycle and one monodentate ligand, adopting distorted square pyramidal geometries. In the [(CoLCl)-Cl-3](+) complex, the macrocycle adopts a folded arrangement with the nitrogen atom opposite to the pyridine at the axial position while in the [Cu(H2L2)(ClO4)](3+) complex, the macrocycle adopts a planar conformation with the three aminopropyl arms located at the same side of the macrocyclic plane.

Two N-methylphosphonic acid derivatives of a 14-membered tetraazamacrocycle containing pyridine have been synthesized, H4L1 and H6L2. The protonation constants of these compounds and the stability constants of complexes of both ligands with Ni2+, Cu2+ and Zn2+ were determined by potentiometric methods at 298 K and ionic strength 0.10 mol dm(-3) in NMe4NO3. The high overall basicity of both compounds is ascribed to the presence of the phosphonate arms. H-1 and P-31 NMR spectroscopic titrations were performed to elucidate the sequence of protonation, which were complemented by conformational analysis studies. The complexes of these ligands have stability constants of the order of or higher than those formed with ligands having the same macrocyclic backbone but acetate arms. At pH = 7 the highest pM values were found for solutions containing the compound with three acetate groups, followed immediately by those of H6L2, however, as expected, the increasing pH favours the complexes of ligands containing phosphonate groups. The single-crystal structure of Na-2[Cu(HL1)]NO3.8H(2)O has shown that the coordination geometry around the copper atom is a distorted square pyramid. Three nitrogen atoms of the macrocyclic backbone and one oxygen atom from one methylphosphonate arm define the basal plane, and the apical coordination is accomplished via the nitrogen atom trans to the pyridine ring of the macrocycle. To achieve this geometric arrangement, the macrocycle adopts a folded conformation. This structure seems consistent with Uv-vis-NIR spectroscopy for the Ni2+ and the Cu2+ complexes and with the EPR for the latter.

A series of water-soluble synthetic dipeptides (1-3) with an N-terminally located beta-alanine residue, beta-alanyl-L-valine (1), beta-alanyl-L-isoleucine (2), and beta-alanyl-L-phenylalanine (3, form hydrogen-bonded supramolecular double helices with a pitch length of 1 nm, whereas the C-terminally positioned beta-alanine containing dipeptide (4), L-phenylalanyl-beta-alanine, does not form a supramolecular double helical structure. beta-Ala-Xaa (Xaa = Val/Ile/Phe) can be regarded as a new motif for the formation of supramolecular double helical structures in the solid state.

Two dipeptides containing an N-terminally positioned omega-amino acid residue (beta-alanine/delta-amino valeric acid) self-assembles to form nanotubes in the solid state as well as in aqueous solution. In spite of having hollow nanotubular structures in the solid state and in solution, their self-assembling nature in these two states are different and this leads to the formation of different internal diameters of these nanotubes in solution and in solid state structure. These nanotubes are stable proteolytically, thermally, and over a wide range of pH values (1-13). The role of water molecules in nanotube formation has been investigated in the solid state. These nanotubes can be considered as a new class of dipeptide nanotubes as they are consisting of N-terminally located protease resistant omega-amino acid residues and C-terminally positioned alpha-amino acid residues. These dipeptides can form an interesting class of short peptidic structure that can give rise to stable nanotubular structure upon self-assembly and these nanotubes can be explored in future for potential nanotechnological applications.

Helical nanofibers are successfully constructed from suitable self-assembling pseudopeptide-based molecular building blocks. The handedness of these nanofibers can be reversed by using mirror-imaged pseudopeptide-based building blocks. Straight nanofibers are also constructed by modulating the molecular and supramolecular structures by the proper choice of the stereochemical nature of the molecular scaffolds. This study demonstrates that molecular structure and chirality are not the only determining factors for tuning the morphology and chirality of nanostructures; the nature of the supramolecular structures formed from the corresponding molecular scaffolds also plays a key role in dictating the shape and chirality of nanostructures. Helical nanofibers are suitable templates for fabricating dipeptide-capped gold nanoparticles, indicating a possible use of these nanofibers in the construction of arrays of gold nanoparticles.

Reaction of 1,3-diaryltriazenes (abbreviated in general as HL-R, where R stands for the para-substituent in the aryl fragment and H stands for the dissociable hydrogen atom, R = OCH3, CH3, H, Cl, NO2) with [Rh(PPh3)(2)(CO)Cl] in ethanol in the presence of NEt3 produces a series of tris-diaryltriazenide complexes of rhodium of type [Rh(L-R)(3)], where the triazenes are coordinated to rhodium as monoanionic, bidentate N,N-donors. Structure of the [Rh(L-OCH3)(3)] complex has been determined by X-ray crystallography. The complexes are diamagnetic, and show characteristic H-1 NMR signals and intense MLCT transitions in the visible region. They also fluoresce in the visible region under ambient condition while excited at around 400 nm. Cyclic voltammetry on these complexes shows a Rh(III)-Rh(IV) oxidation (within 0.84-1.67 V vs SCE), followed by an oxidation of the coordinated tri- and azene ligand (except the R = NO2 complex). An irreversible reduction of the coordinated triazene is also observed for all the complexes below -1.03 V vs SCE.
