Combined picosecond transient absorption and time-resolved infrared studies were performed, aimed at characterising low-lying excited states of the cluster [Os-3(CO)(10)(s-cis-L)] (L= cyclohexa-1,3-diene, 1) and monitoring the formation of its photoproducts. Theoretical (DFT and TD-DFT) calculations on the closely related cluster with L=buta-1,3-diene (2') have revealed that the low-lying electronic transitions of these [Os-3(CO)(10)(s-cis-1,3-diene)] clusters have a predominant sigma(core)pi*(CO) character. From the lowest sigmapi* excited state, cluster 1 undergoes fast Os-Os(1,3-diene) bond cleavage (tau=3.3 ps) resulting in the formation of a coordinatively unsaturated primary photoproduct (1a) with a single CO bridge. A new insight into the structure of the transient has been obtained by DFT calculations. The cleaved Os-Os(1,3-diene) bond is bridged by the donor 1,3-diene ligand, compensating for the electron deficiency at the neighbouring Os centre. Because of the unequal distribution of the electron density in transient la, a second CO bridge is formed in 20 ps in the photoproduct [Os-3(CO)(8)(mu-CO)(2)- (cyclohexa-1,3-diene)] (1b). The latter compound, absorbing strongly around 630 nm, mainly regenerates the parent cluster with a lifetime of about 100 ns in hexane. Its structure, as suggested by the DFT calculations, again contains the 1,3-diene ligand coordinated in a bridging fashion. Photoproduct 1b can therefore be assigned as a high-energy coordination isomer of the parent cluster with all Os-Os bonds bridged.

Mineralised organic remains (including apple pips and cereal grains) collected during the ongoing excavations of Insula IX at the Roman town of Silchester, Hampshire have been analysed by a combination of SEM-EDX, powder XRD and IR spectroscopy. The experiments included mapping experiments using spatially resolved versions of each technique. IR and powder XRD mapping have been carried out utilising the synchrotron source at The Daresbury Laboratory oil stations 11.1 and 9.6. It is concluded that these samples are preserved by rapid mineralisation in the carbonate-substituted calcium phosphate mineral, dahllite. The rapid mineralisation leads to excellent preservation of the samples and a small crystal size. The value of IR spectroscopy in studying materials like this where the crystal size is small is demonstrated. A comparison is made between the excellent preservation seen in this context and the much poorer preservation of mineralised remains seen in Context 5276 or Cesspit 5251. Comments on the possible mechanism of mineralisation of these samples are made. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Asynchronous Optical Sampling (ASOPS) [1,2] and frequency comb spectrometry [3] based on dual Ti:saphire resonators operated in a master/slave mode have the potential to improve signal to noise ratio in THz transient and IR sperctrometry. The multimode Brownian oscillator time-domain response function described by state-space models is a mathematically robust framework that can be used to describe the dispersive phenomena governed by Lorentzian, Debye and Drude responses. In addition, the optical properties of an arbitrary medium can be expressed as a linear combination of simple multimode Brownian oscillator functions. The suitability of a range of signal processing schemes adopted from the Systems Identification and Control Theory community for further processing the recorded THz transients in the time or frequency domain will be outlined [4,5]. Since a femtosecond duration pulse is capable of persistent excitation of the medium within which it propagates, such approach is perfectly justifiable. Several de-noising routines based on system identification will be shown. Furthermore, specifically developed apodization structures will be discussed. These are necessary because due to dispersion issues, the time-domain background and sample interferograms are non-symmetrical [6-8]. These procedures can lead to a more precise estimation of the complex insertion loss function. The algorithms are applicable to femtosecond spectroscopies across the EM spectrum. Finally, a methodology for femtosecond pulse shaping using genetic algorithms aiming to map and control molecular relaxation processes will be mentioned.

The synthesis of a series of poly(aromatic amide) dendrimers up to the second generation is described herein. The AB, building block used throughout the synthesis of the dendrimers was the allyl ester of 3,5-diaminocinnamic acid, which has been synthesized from 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid in good yield with use of a four-step procedure. Dendron synthesis was achieved via a convergent approach with use of a sequence of deprotection/coupling steps. Two commercially available alcohols, L-menthol and citronellol, were coupled to the AB(2) monomer by using an alkyl diacid spacer and two core units; 1,7-diaminoheptane and tris(2-aminoethyl)amine have been used to produce the final dendrimers. Characterization was carried out by NMR and IR spectroscopies, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, GPC, and DSC. The novel monomer and dendritic derivatives exhibited a strong fluorescence emission in the visible region (lambda approximate to 500 nm) of the spectrum and a weak emission in the near-infrared (lambda approximate to 850 nm) upon excitation in the near-UV region. The fluorescence emission characteristics were found to be solvent and dendrimer generation dependent.

A series of half-sandwich bis(phosphine) ruthenium acetylide complexes [Ru(C CAr)(L-2)Cp'] (Ar = phenyl, p-tolyl, 1-naphthyl, 9-anthryl; L2 = (PPh3)(2), Cp' = Cp; L-2 = dppe; Cp' = Cp*) have been examined using electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical methods. One-electron oxidation of these complexes gave the corresponding radical cations [Ru(C CAr)(L2)Cp'](+). Those cations based on Ru(dppe)Cp*, or which feature a para-tolyl acetylide substituent, are more chemically robust than examples featuring the Ru(PPh3)(2)Cp moiety, permitting good quality UV-Vis-NIR and IR spectroscopic data to be obtained using spectroelectrochemical methods. On the basis of TD DFT calculations, the low energy (NIR) absorption bands in the experimental electronic spectra for most of these radical cations are assigned to transitions between the beta-HOSO and beta-LUSO, both of which have appreciable metal d and ethynyl pi character. However, the large contribution from the anthryl moiety to the frontier orbitals of [Ru(C CC14H9)(L2)CP'](+) suggests compounds containing this moiety should be described as metal-stabilised anthryl radical cations.

Bonding, photochemical and electrochemical properties of the clusters [Ru-3(CO)(8)(mu-CO)(2)(alpha-diimine)] (alpha-diimine=2,2'-bipyridine (1), 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine (2) and 2,2'-bipyrimidine (3)) are strongly influenced by the presence of bridging carbonyl ligands. Irradiation at 471 nm initially results in the population of a sigma(Ru-3)pi*(alpha-diimine) excited state. From this state, fast decay takes place to the optically hardly directly accessible pi(Ru/mu-CO) pi*(alpha-diimine) lowest excited state. These assignments agree with theoretical (TD-DFT) results, resonance Raman and picosecond time-resolved infrared spectra. The involvement of the bridging carbonyl ligands in the electron transfer increases the energetic barrier for the formation of open-structure photoproducts such as biradicals and zwitterions. Zwitterions were therefore only obtained in strongly coordinating media such as pyridine at 250 K. The bridging carbonyl ligands also stabilize the radical anions produced upon one-electron reduction of the clusters [Ru-3(CO)(8)(mu-CO)(2)(alpha-diimine)] and observed with cyclic voltammetry, EPR and IR spectroelectrochemistry (for alpha-diimine=2,2'-bipyrimidine). In contrast, open-triangle intermediates formed along the reduction path to [Ru(CO)(2)(alpha-diimine)](n) and [Ru-2(CO)(8)](2-) are more reactive than their triosmium analogues.

A series of bimetallic ruthenium complexes [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}2(μ-C≡CArC≡C)] featuring diethynylaromatic bridging ligands (Ar = 1,4-phenylene, 1,4-naphthylene, 9,10-anthrylene) have been prepared and some representative molecular structures determined. A combination of UV–vis–NIR and IR spectroelectrochemical methods and density functional theory (DFT) have been used to demonstrate that one-electron oxidation of compounds [{Ru(dppe)Cp*}2(μ-C≡CArC≡C)](HC≡CArC≡CH = 1,4-diethynylbenzene; 1,4-diethynyl-2,5-dimethoxybenzene; 1,4-diethynylnaphthalene; 9,10-diethynylanthracene) yields solutions containing radical cations that exhibit characteristics of both oxidation of the diethynylaromatic portion of the bridge, and a mixed-valence state. The simultaneous population of bridge-oxidized and mixed-valence states is likely related to a number of factors, including orientation of the plane of the aromatic portion of the bridging ligand with respect to the metal d-orbitals of appropriate π-symmetry.

The redox properties and reactivity of [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(α-diimine)(NCS)] (α-diimine = bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl)-acenaphthenequinonediimine (2,6-xylyl-BIAN) and 2,2′-bipyridine (bpy)) were studied using cyclic voltammetry and IR/UV–Vis spectroelectrochemistry. [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(2,6-xylyl-BIAN)(NCS)] was shown by X-ray crystallography to have an asymmetric (B-type) conformation. The extended aromatic system of the strong π-acceptor 2,6-xylyl-BIAN ligand stabilises the primary 1e−-reduced radical anion, [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(2,6-xylyl-BIAN•−)(NCS)]−, that can be reduced further to give the solvento anion [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(2,6-xylyl-BIAN)(THF)]−. The initial reduction of [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)(NCS)] in THF at ambient temperature results in the formation of [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)]2 by reaction of the remaining parent complex with [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)]− produced by dissociation of NCS− from [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy•−)(NCS)]−. Further reduction of the dimer [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)]2 restores [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)]−. In PrCN at 183 K, [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(2,6-xylyl-BIAN•−)(NCS)]− converts slowly to 2e−-reduced [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(2,6-xylyl-BIAN)(PrCN)]− and free NCS−. At room temperature, the reduction path in PrCN involves mainly the dimer [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)]2; however, the detailed course of the reduction within the spectroelectrochemical cell is complicated and involves a mixture of several unassigned products. Finally, it has been shown that the five-coordinate anion [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)]− promotes in THF reduction of CO2 to CO and formate via the formation of the intermediate [Mo(CO)2(η3-allyl)(bpy)(O2CH)] and its subsequent reduction.

Photosensitized oxidation of guanine is an important route to DNA damage. Ruthenium polypyridyls are very useful photosensitizers as their reactivity and DNA-binding properties are readily tunable. Here we show a strong difference in the reactivity of the two enantiomers of [Ru(TAP)2(dppz)]2+, by using time-resolved visible and IR spectroscopy. This reveals that the photosensitized one-electron oxidation of guanine in three oligonucleotide sequences proceeds with similar rates and yields for bound delta-[Ru(TAP)2(dppz)]2+, whereas those for the lambda enantiomer are very sensitive to base sequence. It is proposed that these differences are due to preferences of each enantiomer for different binding sites in the duplex.

This work describes syntheses and electrochemical, spectroscopic, and bonding properties in a new series of dinuclear ruthenium(II) complexes bridged by polyaromatic (biphenyl, fluorene, phenanthrene, and pyrene) alkynyl ligands. Longitudinal expansion of the π-conjugated polyaromatic core of the bridging ligands caused a reduced potential difference between the anodic steps and reinforced their bridge-localized nature, as evidenced by UV/vis/near-IR and IR spectroelectrochemical data combined with DFT and TDDFT calculations. Importantly, the intricate multiple IR ν(CC) absorption bands for the singly oxidized states imply a thermal population of a range of conformers (rotamers) with distinct electronic character. This behavior was demonstrated with more accurate DFT calculations of selected nontruncated 1e− oxidized complexes in three different conformations. The combined experimental and theoretical data reveal that thermally populated rotamers featuring various mutual orientations of the ligated metal termini and the bridging diethynyl polyaromatic moieties have a significant impact on the electronic absorption and ν(CC) wavenumbers of the singly oxidized systems.

Discrepancies between recent global earth albedo anomaly data obtained from the climate models, space and ground observations call for a new and better earth reflectance measurement technique. The SALEX (Space Ashen Light Explorer) instrument is a space-based visible and IR instrument for precise estimation of the global earth albedo by measuring the ashen light reflected off the shadowy side of the Moon from the low earth orbit. The instrument consists of a conventional 2-mirror telescope, a pair of a 3-mirror visible imager and an IR bolometer. The performance of this unique multi-channel optical system is sensitive to the stray light contamination due to the complex optical train incorporating several reflecting and refracting elements, associated mounts and the payload mechanical enclosure. This could be further aggravated by the very bright and extended observation target (i.e. the Moon). In this paper, we report the details of extensive stray light analysis including ghosts and cross-talks, leading to the optimum set of stray light precautions for the highest signal-to-noise ratio attainable.

A range of linear polyurethanes featuring aliphatic, aromatic and ether residues have been prepared by co-polymerisation of novel 'masked' isocyanate A(2)-type monomers and diols. The reactive isocyanate monomers were generated in situ via the triphenylphosphine mediated decomposition of the heterocyclic disulfide, 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-dione. Two different synthetic approaches were examined and assessed for the construction of the novel A(2)-type monomers, which involved either coupling two 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones together through a spacer group or construction of 1,2,4-dithiazolidine-3,5-diones directly from diamines. The resulting polyurethanes were purified via solvent extraction and analysed using GPC, NMR and IR spectroscopic analyses. Molecular weight data were obtained and compared from both GPC and H-1 NMR (via end-group analysis) spectroscopic analysis. The thermal properties of the polyurethanes were determined using DSC and their solubility in common aprotic organic solvents was also assessed and related to their structural composition. Background: Previous data support the benefits of reducing dietary saturated fatty acids (SFAs) on insulin resistance (IR) and other metabolic risk factors. However, whether the IR status of those suffering from metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects this response is not established. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to determine whether the degree of IR influences the effect of substituting high-saturated fatty acid (HSFA) diets by isoenergetic alterations in the quality and quantity of dietary fat on MetS risk factors. DESIGN: In this single-blind, parallel, controlled, dietary intervention study, MetS subjects (n = 472) from 8 European countries classified by different IR levels according to homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) were randomly assigned to 4 diets: an HSFA diet; a high-monounsaturated fatty acid (HMUFA) diet; a low-fat, high-complex carbohydrate (LFHCC) diet supplemented with long-chain n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (1.2 g/d); or an LFHCC diet supplemented with placebo for 12 wk (control). Anthropometric, lipid, inflammatory, and IR markers were determined. RESULTS: Insulin-resistant MetS subjects with the highest HOMA-IR improved IR, with reduced insulin and HOMA-IR concentrations after consumption of the HMUFA and LFHCC n-3 diets (P < 0.05). In contrast, subjects with lower HOMA-IR showed reduced body mass index and waist circumference after consumption of the LFHCC control and LFHCC n-3 diets and increased HDL cholesterol concentrations after consumption of the HMUFA and HSFA diets (P < 0.05). MetS subjects with a low to medium HOMA-IR exhibited reduced blood pressure, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol levels after the LFHCC n-3 diet and increased apolipoprotein A-I concentrations after consumption of the HMUFA and HSFA diets (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Insulin-resistant MetS subjects with more metabolic complications responded differently to dietary fat modification, being more susceptible to a health effect from the substitution of SFAs in the HMUFA and LFHCC n-3 diets. Conversely, MetS subjects without IR may be more sensitive to the detrimental effects of HSFA intake. The metabolic phenotype of subjects clearly determines response to the quantity and quality of dietary fat on MetS risk factors, which suggests that targeted and personalized dietary therapies may be of value for its different metabolic features.
