We study boundary value problems for a linear evolution equation with spatial derivatives of arbitrary order, on the domain 0 < x < L, 0 < t < T, with L and T positive nite constants. We present a general method for identifying well-posed problems, as well as for constructing an explicit representation of the solution of such problems. This representation has explicit x and t dependence, and it consists of an integral in the k-complex plane and of a discrete sum. As illustrative examples we solve some two-point boundary value problems for the equations iqt + qxx = 0 and qt + qxxx = 0.

This paper represents the last technical contribution of Professor Patrick Parks before his untimely death in February 1995. The remaining authors of the paper, which was subsequently completed, wish to dedicate the article to Patrick. A frequency criterion for the stability of solutions of linear difference equations with periodic coefficients is established. The stability criterion is based on a consideration of the behaviour of a frequency hodograph with respect to the origin of coordinates in the complex plane. The formulation of this criterion does not depend on the order of the difference equation.

We present a Galerkin method with piecewise polynomial continuous elements for fully nonlinear elliptic equations. A key tool is the discretization proposed in Lakkis and Pryer, 2011, allowing us to work directly on the strong form of a linear PDE. An added benefit to making use of this discretization method is that a recovered (finite element) Hessian is a byproduct of the solution process. We build on the linear method and ultimately construct two different methodologies for the solution of second order fully nonlinear PDEs. Benchmark numerical results illustrate the convergence properties of the scheme for some test problems as well as the Monge–Amp`ere equation and the Pucci equation.

We study certain boundary value problems for the one-dimensional wave equation posed in a time-dependent domain. The approach we propose is based on a general transform method for solving boundary value problems for integrable nonlinear PDE in two variables, that has been applied extensively to the study of linear parabolic and elliptic equations. Here we analyse the wave equation as a simple illustrative example to discuss the particular features of this method in the context of linear hyperbolic PDEs, which have not been studied before in this framework.

We study the elliptic sine-Gordon equation in the quarter plane using a spectral transform approach. We determine the Riemann-Hilbert problem associated with well-posed boundary value problems in this domain and use it to derive a formal representation of the solution. Our analysis is based on a generalization of the usual inverse scattering transform recently introduced by Fokas for studying linear elliptic problems.

We consider in this paper the solvability of linear integral equations on the real line, in operator form (λ−K)φ=ψ, where and K is an integral operator. We impose conditions on the kernel, k, of K which ensure that K is bounded as an operator on . Let Xa denote the weighted space as |s|→∞}. Our first result is that if, additionally, |k(s,t)|⩽κ(s−t), with and κ(s)=O(|s|−b) as |s|→∞, for some b>1, then the spectrum of K is the same on Xa as on X, for 01. As an example where kernels of this latter form occur we discuss a boundary integral equation formulation of an impedance boundary value problem for the Helmholtz equation in a half-plane.

We propose a numerical method to approximate the solution of second order elliptic problems in nonvariational form. The method is of Galerkin type using conforming finite elements and applied directly to the nonvariational (nondivergence) form of a second order linear elliptic problem. The key tools are an appropriate concept of “finite element Hessian” and a Schur complement approach to solving the resulting linear algebra problem. The method is illustrated with computational experiments on three linear and one quasi-linear PDE, all in nonvariational form.

We use the elliptic reconstruction technique in combination with a duality approach to prove a posteriori error estimates for fully discrete backward Euler scheme for linear parabolic equations. As an application, we combine our result with the residual based estimators from the a posteriori estimation for elliptic problems to derive space-error indicators and thus a fully practical version of the estimators bounding the error in the $ \mathrm {L}_{\infty }(0,T;\mathrm {L}_2(\varOmega ))$ norm. These estimators, which are of optimal order, extend those introduced by Eriksson and Johnson in 1991 by taking into account the error induced by the mesh changes and allowing for a more flexible use of the elliptic estimators. For comparison with previous results we derive also an energy-based a posteriori estimate for the $ \mathrm {L}_{\infty }(0,T;\mathrm {L}_2(\varOmega ))$-error which simplifies a previous one given by Lakkis and Makridakis in 2006. We then compare both estimators (duality vs. energy) in practical situations and draw conclusions.

Many scientific and engineering applications involve inverting large matrices or solving systems of linear algebraic equations. Solving these problems with proven algorithms for direct methods can take very long to compute, as they depend on the size of the matrix. The computational complexity of the stochastic Monte Carlo methods depends only on the number of chains and the length of those chains. The computing power needed by inherently parallel Monte Carlo methods can be satisfied very efficiently by distributed computing technologies such as Grid computing. In this paper we show how a load balanced Monte Carlo method for computing the inverse of a dense matrix can be constructed, show how the method can be implemented on the Grid, and demonstrate how efficiently the method scales on multiple processors. In this paper we introduce a new algorithm, based on the successful work of Fathi and Alexandrov, on hybrid Monte Carlo algorithms for matrix inversion and solving systems of linear algebraic equations. This algorithm consists of two parts, approximate inversion by Monte Carlo and iterative refinement using a deterministic method. Here we present a parallel hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm, which uses Monte Carlo to generate an approximate inverse and that improves the accuracy of the inverse with an iterative refinement. The new algorithm is applied efficiently to sparse non-singular matrices. When we are solving a system of linear algebraic equations, Bx = b, the inverse matrix is used to compute the solution vector x = B(-1)b. We present results that show the efficiency of the parallel hybrid Monte Carlo algorithm in the case of sparse matrices.

In this paper we consider bilinear forms of matrix polynomials and show that these polynomials can be used to construct solutions for the problems of solving systems of linear algebraic equations, matrix inversion and finding extremal eigenvalues. An almost Optimal Monte Carlo (MAO) algorithm for computing bilinear forms of matrix polynomials is presented. Results for the computational costs of a balanced algorithm for computing the bilinear form of a matrix power is presented, i.e., an algorithm for which probability and systematic errors are of the same order, and this is compared with the computational cost for a corresponding deterministic method.

We study the heat, linear Schrodinger and linear KdV equations in the domain l(t) < x < ∞, 0 < t < T, with prescribed initial and boundary conditions and with l(t) a given differentiable function. For the first two equations, we show that the unknown Neumann or Dirichlet boundary value can be computed as the solution of a linear Volterra integral equation with an explicit weakly singular kernel. This integral equation can be derived from the formal Fourier integral representation of the solution. For the linear KdV equation we show that the two unknown boundary values can be computed as the solution of a system of linear Volterra integral equations with explicit weakly singular kernels. The derivation in this case makes crucial use of analyticity and certain invariance properties in the complex spectral plane. The above Volterra equations are shown to admit a unique solution.
