Review of A-level Chemistry content 2010

This document is a review of the content of the A-level Chemistry specifications from the main UK exam boards (Scottish highers not included - sorry!). These A-level specifications commenced teaching in September 2008. Students entering university in 2010 will have studied the new A-levels, and this document is intended to help academics to identify what students will have covered. The document also contains a summary of discussions which took place between teachers and academics at our annual Post-16 teachers' day in June 2010 regarding the nature of the 2010 intake and their capabilities in chemistry. Review of A-level Chemistry content 2015

ITEM DESCRIPTION After producing reviews of A-level Chemistry content in 2007 and 2010, we have updated the document to reflect the changes which have been introduced for first teaching in September 2015. We will be working with our network of teachers locally to monitor the impacts of the changes on teaching and the student experience with a view to releasing an updated version in the summer of 2017. This will aim to provide insights for university staff regarding the experiences of incoming students who will have been in the first cohort to have studied the new specifications. We are grateful to the Royal Society of Chemistry for support for the final stages of compiling this report. If you spot any errors or omissions, please don't hesitate to contact us.

The UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education

The UK Professional Standards Framework (UK PSF) for teaching and supporting learning, launched in February 2006, is a flexible framework which uses a descriptor-based approach to professional standards. There are three standard descriptors each of which is applicable to a number of staff roles and to different career stages of those engaged in teaching and supporting learning. The standard descriptors are underpinned by areas of professional activity, core knowledge and professional values. The framework provides a reference point for institutions and individuals as well as supporting ongoing development within any one standard descriptor.

Linking teaching and research in disciplines and departments

This paper supports the effective links between teaching and discipline-based research in disciplinary communities and in academic departments. It is authored by Alan Jenkins, Mick Healey and Roger Zetter.

The UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and supporting learning in higher education

This is a part of a collection of materials developed by the HEAcademy Subject Centre for Languages, linguistics and area studies. The materials provide reflective activities designed to engage teachers with some of the key issues in working with international students and practical ideas for ways in which these can be addressed. They will be of particular interest to new staff or anyone new to working with international students.

ECS Teaching Handbook

This handbook, nominally chapter 3 of the ECS staff handbook, describes ECS educational policy and procedures, as defined and agreed by the school via its various boards and committees. There are sections covering our educational aims and strategy, processes and structures, teaching and learning, pastoral and administrative arrangements, and a glossary. The material here supplements that in the University's quality handbook. (This is the working document which will become our 2009/10 handbook next academic year.)
