Matlab self study tutorial - Graphing

These resources are designed to support students in gaining more confidence with using Matlab. The PDFs provide guidance and information; Objectives: Introduce basic syntax and data preparation for graphing with Matlab by providing some data, examples of code and some background documents. Outcomes: -how to write an m file script -the importance of syntax -how to load files -how to produce simple graphs -where to get help and further examples There are also some data files to provide example data for students to work with in producing Matlab resources.

Laser Health and Safety Interactive Video

This short video is designed to make you think about the safety aspects of working with lasers within laser laboratories. Postgraduates and research fellows work with many different types of lasers in a variety of different experimental conditions. These lasers are often more powerful than those used as an undergraduate and require additional safety practices. The video was demonstrated to the EUNIS 2008 conference Aarhus, Denmark, and was a finalist in the Dorup E-Learning Award.

Team Working and Profiling Handout

Exercise and Handout for use in conjunction with Lecture on team working and profiling. Refers to Belbin model of team development. If you have missed the class, you should work through the activity, ideally find some other students to work with. Using Reference Manager

This is a handout to describe how to use Reference Manager v12. It is focused on the BioMedical area and covers linking to PubMed, Web of Knowledge, other biblographic providers (OVID and EBSCO) and searching for book information. The notes include how to use Word 2003 and Word 2007/2010 . You must be running v12.0.3 or later for Reference Manager to work with Word 2010.

Seminar: Symbol Management systems to support democracy in development of an online Symbol Dictionary

Abstract This seminar will introduce an initial year of research exploring participation in the development of a bilingual symbol dictionary. Symbols can be a communication and literacy ‘lifeline’ for those unable to communicate through speech or writing. We will discuss how an online system has been built to overcome language, cultural and literacy skill issues for a country where 86% are expatriates but the target clients are Arabic born individuals with speech and language impairments. The symbols in use at present are inappropriate and yet there is no democratic way of providing a ‘user voice’ for making choices, let alone easy mechanisms for adapting and sharing newly developed symbols across the nation or extended Arabic world. This project aims to change this situation. Having sourced a series of symbols that could be adapted to suit user’s needs, the team needed to encourage those users, their carers and therapists to vote on whether the symbols would be appropriate and work with those already in use. The first prototype was developed and piloted during the WAISfest in 2013. The second phase needs further voting on the most suitably adapted symbols for use when communicating with others. There is a requirement to have mechanisms for evaluating the outcome of the votes, where symbols fail to represent accurate meanings, have inappropriate colours, representations and actions etc. There also remains the need to collect both quantitative and qualitative data. Not easy in a climate of acceptance of the expert view, a culture where to be critical can be a problem and time is not of the essence.

WAIS Fest 2015 - Wrap up

WAISfest is an opportunity to explore an area of research that isn't part of your day-to-day job, for 3 days. It's kinda like your Google 20% time. At the kick off session, a set of themes will be presented, and you get to choose which group to work with. Then for a few working days, you get to work on this challenge, before presenting what you've achieved at the end.
