The Transparency Agenda of the 2010/1 UK Coalition government promises to revolutionise government, public services and public engagement, by ‘holding politicians and public bodies to account, reducing the deficit and delivering better value for money in public spending, and realising significant economic benefits by enabling businesses and non-profit organisations to build innovative applications and websites using public data’, to quote the then Prime Minister. This is an ambitious programme with laudable aims, yet it naturally has limits.

System Design: Introduction to Group Work

In this course you will learn a number of different ways in which to describe a system, at both a high level (using SSM) and a low level (using UML). The main coursework for the course is to work in groups and use these techniques on a case study of your collective choosing. In this session we put the students into groups, run a brainstorming activity on potential businesses, and outline some of the group activities that will be required over the course.

Data Science, Microsoft and You

In this session we'll explore how Microsoft uses data science and machine learning across it's entire business, from Windows and Office, to Skype and XBox. We'll look at how companies across the world use Microsoft technology for empowering their businesses in many different industries. And we'll look at data science technologies you can use yourselves, such as Azure Machine Learning and Power BI. Finally we'll discuss job opportunities for data scientists and tips on how you can be successful!
