Procesos de privatización del agua en América Latina: análisis y seguimiento de la interacción estratégica entre movimientos sociales versus multinacionales en Bolivia, Uruguay y México. Período 2000 – 2006

El presente escrito, constituye una aproximación a los procesos de privatización del agua en América Latina. Lo anterior, en el marco de la acción colectiva, específicamente de los movimientos sociales y su interacción estratégica con oponentes como las compañías multinacionales, las organizaciones financieras internacionales y el Estado. Tomando como referencia las luchas ocurridas en Bolivia, Uruguay y México, con especial énfasis en La Guerra del Agua en Cochabamba (Bolivia).

Raymond D. Adams, gigante de la neurología norteamericana

El profesor Raymond D. Adams (1911-2010) fue una de las figuras más prominentes de la neurología norteamericana en el siglo XX. Realizó sus estudios de medicina en la Universidad de Duke. Posteriormente, inició especialización en psiquiatría, pero optó por dedicarse al estudio de la patología del sistema nervioso y a la neurología en el Hospital de Boston durante 10 años. Luego fue contratado por el Hospital General de Massachusetts, donde dirigió del Departamento de Neurología por más de 25 años. Fue profesor emérito de neuropatología de la Universidad de Harvard y obtuvo distinciones de otras universidades y sociedades científicas en los Estados Unidos y en otros países. Contribuyó de manera decisiva a la consolidación de la neurología en Norteamérica creando una escuela de fama mundial. Describió varios síndromes, aportó al desarrollo de otras ramas de la neurociencia, publicó múltiples artículos científicos y, desde 1977, junto con el Dr. Maurice Victor, el libro Principios de neurología, que se ha convertido en un clásico en la materia, traducido a varios idiomas. Dirigió un Departamento en donde se ha formado un muy destacado grupo de neurólogos de varias nacionalidades que dan brillo a la neurología mundial.

Some Topics in Relation to José Celestino Mutis and Medicine

José Celestino Mutis showed different interest areas of study and worked in multiple knowledge fields: mathematics, mineralogy, astronomy, zoology and botanic, the one in which is best known. However, he was a medical doctor, whit profound an up to date knowledge. He studied at Sevilla University, and in the Royal College of Cadiz. He arrived to the “Nuevo Reino de Granada” as personal medical doctor of the the viceroy Pedro Messía de la Cerda and during 47 years, period of time he lived there, he always exercised his profession. We showed a special interest in the study of cinchona and the only work he published was El Arcano de la quina. He advised in public health many viceroys and he contributed in different fields but particularly in the prevention of smallpox by inoculation. He played a decisive role in the reopening of the medical school of the Colegio Mayor de Nuestra Señora del Rosario. Some of his achievements justifies the appellative “Father of the Medicine in Colombia”.

The avatars of housing in Latin American urban and regional research (1990-2012)

The review of the terms used as keywords in three journals (published in Mexico and Chile) and the Brazilian meetings of regional and urban research are used to analyze the trends in housing research. Their dynamics are interpreted in the light of the general changes identified for urban and regional  research, synthesized by other authors as the emergence of new research topics and agents of urban change (civil society, participation, environment, gender) and the process of globalization (in its facets  of productive restructuration, job flexibility, social exclusion) as a general framework of analysis. It is found that the central themes of research in housing relate primarily to government action in  housing. New concerns, such as citizen participation, the environment or gender are linked to these actions as normative elements to the evaluation of programs or policies, but not as autonomous fields of study of the housing.In addition to this central concern, a significant growth of academic  production and  ome indication of the internationalization of research are mentioned
